Optimization of surgical
devices disinfection
Hygiene is of primary importance for patient health. An optimal disinfection of surgical
devices is therefore essential. However, it was so far almost impossible to detect, control
and eliminate bacterial biofilms from these devices.
REALCO has developed an enzymatic cocktail called CLEAR MD which eradicates the
biofilm and releases bacteria that got trapped inside the organic matrix. Disinfection
efficiency is significantly improved compared to more «classical» detergents.
Treating the biofilms, the product allows in-depth cleaning (biofilms, proteins, organic
soils). The solution guarantees hygiene and the definitive decontamination of the devices.
The R&D department at REALCO collaborates with several universities (UCL, ULB, ULG) and
research centers (CELABOR, INRIA) with the objective to speed up the transfer of technology
and knowledge, therefore increasing the potential of research inside the department.

Detecting drowsiness
Drowsiness detection represents a major challenge for health and safety. Indeed,
drowsiness is at the source of 20 to 30% of traffic and transportation accidents as well as
other industrial accidents. In addition, from 6 to 11% of the population suffers from an
excessive daytime sleepiness, especially due to sleep and awake disruptions.
The technology developed at Phasya automatically measures in real time the state of
drowsiness/awakeness of a patient.
The innovation is a pair of glasses connected to a computer. A cam is integrated into
the glasses and takes pictures of the eye. A software program analyzes the pictures and
determines the state of drowsiness/awakeness of the person. The software can also analyze
images taken by other systems.
The technology has extensive applications : road safety, air safety, research, occupational
care health services, medical diagnosis, ...
As a first step, the technology meant for research centers, but it will soon be adapted for
use in other markets.

Automated platform for
biological analyzes
Initially developed by Biosensys, the automated platform has been optimized by WOW
technology in particular to measure the concentration of antibiotic in blood samples.
This lab is an opened system, meaning that it can be configured in order to execute a
large variety of biological analyses using different protocols. It is characterized by a system
that can accurately manipulate samples and reagents in a flexible manner, while providing
reliable results.
Great care has been taken regarding liquid handling : control of the samples and reagents
temperature from 0°C to 50°C, highly accurate automated pipetting, mixing system for
reagents. Results are read straightforwardly on the same apparel with a colorimeter that
measures the amount of light being absorbed by the sample.
A bar-code based system is integrated as well in the platform in order to avoid any
misidentification in the results.

3D for surgery
3D-Side is specialized in 3D technologies with application to the surgery of hard biological
tissues (bones).
Using 3D technologies, 3D-Side prepares and plans complex surgeries such as tumour
removal, in collaboration with the surgeons. Using measurement instruments, 3D-Side
guides the surgeon case-by-case, bringing engineering accuracy inside the operating
room.
Before entering the operating room, the surgeon sends medical images through a
secured internet connection. Thanks to a dedicated interface, the surgeon can visualize
how the surgery will take place in three dimensions (position of the tumour, shape of
the implant, correction of the clinical fracture, ...). Once the presurgery work has been
validated, the surgeon receives a sterile and biocompatible replica of the bones. He also
receives custom-made instruments that will guide his gestures inside the operating room,
reproducing the presurgery simulation as accurately as possible. At the moment, 3D-Side’s
main applications are ablation of tumours, head implants and the treatment of fractures.

Immediate medical
diagnosis
A « point-of-care » (POC) medical test is a test that is processed and analyzed close to the
patient. A classical example is the detection of antibodies in blood exposed to Tetanos.
A clinical decision can then be taken immediately. ZenTech has developed Zreader, a
device that aims at processing such tests using a very simple graphical user interface. Not
only can Zreader be used by people who were not trained on diagnosis techniques but it
also brings optimal traceability.
No need to turn to doctors or analysts : the sample to analyze is placed in Zreader.
Equipped with a cam, a LED pad and an integrated software application, Zreader captures
and analyzes the sample pictures thanks to algorithms. A clinical result is then delivered.
In the future, the product will evolve to adapt to the market of connected devices in
medicine (wifi, ...).

A mobile wifi generator
It is not always easy for the tourism and cultural operators to give tourists access to their
numerical data.
That is the case for web sites, videos, audio guides, visitor’s guides or other maps processed
by operators installed in non-modern buildings : old buildings with thick walls, wifi
connections that can be hardly shared, expensive 3G visitors from abroad, lack of electrical
networks, ...
eQode has developed the concept of WiEasyBox, a mobile and self-contained box being
capable of operating off an integrated battery. It includes a web server, giving users the
ability to share files (PDF, presentations, pictures, ...) and multimedia material (videos,
soundtracks, ...). eQode builds its own wifi network that can be captured by tablets and
smartphones.
IOL Strategic Design participated in the design of the box.

Luxury products
authentification
According to some studies, counterfeiting today accounts for more than 600 billion
dollars every year and develops mainly where brands show considerable growth in some
countries and over internet. Clearly enough, counterfeiting still has a bright future.
This is why Selinko intended to offer the most secured solution against fraud and
counterfeiting, in combination with traceability services and direct marketing.
Selinko offers a solution that identifies the product. The solution makes use of NFC (shortrange radio frequency communication system), a standard technology that has been
validated for more than 20 years in the banking sector. Each chip holds an encrypted
certificate that may be read securely from an NFC smartphone once the dedicated app is
loaded.
The company built its good reputation since 2013 and signed with the Bordeaux estate
«Le Pina», labelled as the «world’s most expensive wine». Selinko lately raised over EUR 1
million to sustain its business development abroad.

A smart measuring box
In the industry, predictive maintenance makes use of different measurement techniques
to assess equipment behaviour and detect early-warning signs of failure.
Vibratory analysis is the most general methodology. Vibrations are captured thanks to
different devices : accelerometers, laser vibrometers, ... Data is collected using portable or
fixed devices that usually transmit data through wire connections.
The innovation ? The new smart measuring box Vamoss® 200 proposed by M. Haumann
can perfectly replace most of these devices.
The box is compatible with the two standard methods for vibration analysis. It integrates
its own power supply unit (with a battery life of 5 years) and transmits data via wireless
communications over an exceptional distance of 300 meters in an industrial environment.
The analysis of collected data (displayed in a graphic chart) and the impressive number
of parameters that can be tuned using Vamoss® 200 (including the frequency of
measurements) can be controlled remotely using an intuitive and easy to use secured web
platform.

Connected time-clock
Since 2014, according to the Belgian law, people working on construction sites (with a
budget over EUR 800,000) have had to be identified and registered as soon as they access
the site. To help companies meeting this constraint, the ONSS gives access to its databases
through an online system called «Checkinatwork». However, sites are most often not
equipped with a time clock and that’s where the innovation is : connected time clocks that
are compatible with the «Checkinatwork» service.
This system gives sub-contracters the ability to register their staff thanks to a dedicated
access. The enrolment process is secured and automated as all data is embedded in the
« construbadge » delivered by the building federation. Most of the coding is no longer
required and staff can focus on the treatment of exceptions.

A gift that speaks
Wish to add a video message to a gift or a sample product ? Can you imagine the impact ?
Tell your family and friends how much you love them, adding a video with your little family
wishing a happy birthday to their grandfather. Perception is totally different !
Presenting a new product to your customer by sparing him unnecessary talks, thanks to
a video that explains how it works and what it does increases its potential significantly.
Wrapsodi created this unique concept by merging QR code or NFC chips with the objects
you would like to share.
Thus, Wrapsodi is a funny and original video communication service. Being connected to
the system, your products will show videos recorded by your customers for their friends.
Add this «connected» dimension to your brand, and your product will be back again in all
the conversations.

Immersive 3D visits
Oculus Rift is the last generation of 3D glasses. With an extended field of vision of 110°, it
offers a much deeper immersion. It is based on this technology that the Sidéma company
decided to innovate by offering a 3D highly immersive virtual visits service in real time.
Concretely, the company decided to develop its own software solution : Arvi3D.
The system can be used as a way to sell or show, but also for entertainment and educational
purposes. For example, a museum or an art gallery, wishing to inform its visitors in an
interactive and innovative manner can integrate Arvi3D in its educational and animation
concepts.
An other example is a construction company that can give a client the possibility to take
a virtual tour of a building in which he/she would not only be part of it but could also
interact with it by modifying, among other possibilities, the colors of the walls.
Beyond 3D glasses, Arvi3D also offers, for example, the possibility for its user to view a
building on a tablet or a web page in an interactive way.

«Paper based» multisensory communication
Let’s imagine a 2mm thick brochure praising the virtues of your company, and including
a ultra fine video screen embedded in a magazine. Let’s imagine the same brochure
including this time a 7 inches screen and a wifi connection equipped with a light sensor
that detects movement and suggest a new video each time you turn over a new page of
your brochure. Let’s imagine you can even add a fragrance diffuser to these videos.
It is a real emotional connection that will be established between your company and your
prospect. Emotions which will help the reader to better understand the innovation and
most importantly to remember it.
To do so, the innovation builders combine both manufacturing (printing, metal furniture,
wood, plexiglass) and reproduction sound/image techniques.

Renting out parking
spaces to individuals
Did you know that studies show that in certain areas, over 30% of the traffic is caused by
drivers trying to park ? In Paris, around 30,000 drivers are looking for a parking space at
any given time.
Let’s imagine you are looking for a parking space just outside a concert hall. What about
parking in a free driveway ?
MyflexyPark is a unique web service in Belgium. It connects owners of private parking
spaces and private drivers looking for parking spaces that are close enough to their final
destination (work, leisure activity, ...).
The objective of this initiative is to provide another solution to the mobility and parking
problems in cities. By optimizing private parking spaces and providing a sharing/renting
solution system, MyflexyPark hopes that the concept of collaborative economy will
develop. Favour trade between individuals could indeed bring about positive changes in

Second-hand software
programs
Selling second hand software programs is legal since 2009 with the publication of the
Directive on computer programs, and it was confirmed on July 3rd, 2012 with a decision of
the European Court of Justice..
The innovation presented is a computing platform called NearlyNewSoftware. It gives
individuals and European companies the ability to re-sell unused software licenses and
buy new licenses at reduced costs.
All software brands can be re-sold; licenses are validated before they are proposed online. The vendor decides about the selling price. A concept that is very similar to eBay for
software packages where companies have the certainty that they will buy a legal product
and simultaneously make substantial benefits by selling unused licenses.
An interesting service as, for instance, a license for the product Autocad4 costs EUR 5,589
per user. The service offers average discounts of 40% for these products.

An «all-in-one»
measurement tool
This is the Swiss army knife of the measurement tools. Companies working in sectors where
measurements are important had been waiting for such an innovation. Requirements
change depending on customer requests and very often it may be needed to measure
voltage first, then temperature and later on pressure.
Before POLYLOG®, companies needed to buy instruments one after the other. Now with
POLYLOG®, industrials can buy miniaturized measurement blocks in identical sizes,
equipped with the ad-hoc mechanics/electronics and the objective to acquire, save and
transmit up to 8 different measures via plug and play.
Each block can measure one or several parameters and can be combined to another blocks
in order to add a measure or increase the number of channels desired.

Natural candied fruits
with saffron from Cotchia
The candied fruits are guaranteed dye-free and exclude artificial flavouring, preservatives
and gelatine. Made of fruit pulp, organic apple juice, sugar and pectin, the fruits are
combined with saffron in an innovative way.
Three flavours are available : raspberries, pears and blood orange.
Why the saffron from Cotchia ? « Firstly because it is a Walloon product (the plantation
is located in Wasseiges). Secondly because saffron from Cotchia is of exceptional quality.
When two Walloon artisans associate their products, it results in a nice gustatory surprise»,

A food container

What if you could add a liquid to an edible container, whether it is liquid chocolate or
another ? Without any risk of leakage.
So far, only one praline brand (containing liquor) succeeded in this objective. But the
success was related to the liquor itself, taking benefit from a crystallization phenomenon.
Michel Willems and the master chocolatier Pascal Bedeur invented a new process patented
by the company N.N.T. Sprl. The process consists in the « production of an added sugarfree food container».
The process gives the creators the ability to coat any liquid within an added sugar-free
edible container. It even works with water, raspberry-gin cocktails or any other alcohol.
The duo has started developing pralines filled with various alcohols, ranging from whisky
to vodka, fruit purée, unflavoured yoghurt or stevia (banana, strawberries, raspberries,
mint, wild fruits, ...) and also pralines coating different kinds of teas, coffee with cognac
or mocha coffee ... with sugar or sugar-free. In short, brand new ideas and decorations for
pastries and the agri-food sector.

A natural blue beverage
First natural blue beverage, b blue®contains spiruline, a micro-seaweed with a high
nutritional value. A real miracle as 60 to 70% of its weight is made of proteins. But unlike
spiruline capsules that do not taste very good, b blue® is much tastier. First because it is
made of cold-pressed spiruline (patented process), which improves taste, but also because
it is natural. It is also made of minerals coming from the ocean ecosystem, which are much
better digested.
In addition, b blue® contains an important phycocyanin dosage, more important than the
dosage found naturally in spiruline. Not only does it gives this blue colour to the product
but also it also acts as a powerful antioxydant which eliminates heavy metals from the
body and protects thet liver.
According to the creators, the combination of these extracts would also increase
performance, endurance and the load-carrying capacity to effort. It would also enhance
internal energy production, reinforce the natural defences, slow down cellular aging due
to oxydative stress and still would allow for recovering after a physical or mental effort.

Feeling better the
morning after the party ?
That happens to many of us : following a party, we usually suffer from a «hangover» when
waking up, involving naps, diet and painkillers.
As a result of two and a half years of research and a patent, a pharmaceutical company
from Liège has developed a natural formula that sustains the liver function.
The ingredients include 20 active substances, of which 5 are plant extracts. One can find
lemon juice concentrate, nettle, linden as well as milk thistle, a plant that is well known for
its benefits on the liver. Greeks were using it and Pliny the elder advised to drink a mixture
made of the juice from the plant with additional honey to «eliminate the excess of bile».
Packaged in two doses of 15 ml each, the formula must be drunk before and after the socalled «excess».
As the name says Be4after© must be drunk in the beginning and the end of the party to
prevent the impact of a slightly excessive alcohol consumption.

Insects spread
When they decided to re-introduce insects into our diet, Damien Huysmans and Anne De
Decker knew that they would hit a huge cultural barrier.
That is why in their idea to offer affordable insects-based products to a large public, they
contacted one of the ambassadors of the Walloon gastronomy : the two Michelin-stars
studded Chef Sang Hoon Degeimbre. Together, they developed a preliminary range of
everyday products, where insects are included as non-visible ingredients.
A smart way to start eating insects. Without fear, in a progressive manner. Products are
available in bio shops around the country.
What about the offer ? Two «spreads» of tomato-dark beetle and carrot-dark beetle (for
sandwiches, appetizers or cold meal) and two spreads with dark chocolate and milk (for
breakfast and snacks).
A concept that recently attracted large retail outlets. A well known Belgian brand decided
to sell the spreads under its own brand name. Another European premiere for The Green

Among the 121,000 photovoltaic systems identified in Wallonia, about one out of three
can no longer benefit from the services delivered by their initial fitter in case a problem

Why is that ? Because of the recent bankruptcies of a large number of fitting companies.
And on top of this, a vast majority of clients does not even know except when their
installation fails. And who says no more fitter, says no more guarantee !
ATI Industry, in collaboration with Ethias and the solar market leader, ABB – POWER ONE,

In-house air quality
monitoring
Air quality undoubtedly degrades in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas without necessarily
bringing attention to the occupants.
Carbon dioxide, as a product of breathing, progressively accumulates. Above critical
CO² rates, signs of drowsiness, mental fatigue and difficulty concentrating can appear.
Sometimes headaches are also observed.
Climi monitors as other devices do, measure three essential parameters linked to in-house
air quality : the carbon dioxide rate (CO²), relative humidity and ambient temperature.
However, thanks to its visual (colour LEDs) and audible alarms, Climi monitor inform the
occupants as soon as it becomes mandatory to renew the air and additionally helps them
find the best way to proceed without wasting energy.
Electronic monitoring of in-house air quality is an efficient and inexpensive solution
recommended for private housings and public facilities : offices, meeting rooms, nurseries,

Vertical axis wind turbine
The vertical axis wind turbine developed by Fairwind positions itself as the most powerful
machine inside its market segment, with powers ranging from 10kW to 50kW.
What sets it apart from competitors is its unique speed reduction gear designed by Fairwind
engineers. Indeed, it is well-known that the gear, usually located between the rotor and
the alternator, may be a cause of trouble. The Fairwind technology is not only more robust
in time, but it also minimizes maintenance still meeting the standards (IEC61400).
Fairwind designs (R&D), manufactured in its factory at Fleurus, sells and installs ready-torun wind turbines. These are simple (fewer pieces, less maintenance) and eco-designed

Water sanitation
Willing to provide clean water in a simple and intuitive manner for water sports, public
swimming pools, wellness centers, drinking water systems or industrial sites ? It is now
feasible thanks to Hygienewater.
Hygienewater has developed a solution that uses ordinary salt (NaCl) and, thanks to
a suitable electrochemical treatment, produces all the necessary elements for water
sanitation without excess. Hygienewater guarantees similar efficiency to the chlorinebased treatments avoiding their disadvantages (precautionary principles, storage in a
suitable environment, ...).
The solution is an in-situ mini sanitation unit that treats water using electrolysis and sends
a sanitation solution in the water circuit using a dispenser pump. The process is automated
and water quality is monitored continuously.
Hygienewater gives its users the ability to access clean water anytime using a reliable,

3D pen
At first sight, the Lix Pen looks like any other pen. However, it integrates 3D-printing
technology and gives the ability to create 3D real objects. Developed by the Akkro Media
company, the Lix Pen is the smallest 3D pen worldwide.
Instead of drawing in 2 dimensions on a sheet, the Lix Pen ink takes the form of plastic
stems that are heated and solidify after cooling down. Inside the 16.5 cm long pen stands
an ABS or PLA wire that can be heated at a temperature ranging from 160°C to 230°C in
just a minute. The electrical resistance located inside the pen is powered via a USB cable.
The user can thus create a 3D object within a few minutes time.
Dedicated to academics, architects, designers, artists or even kids, the Lix Pen does not
hide its ambition to become a true new means of communication.
It should be noted that in 2014, 8,000 units were pre-sold thanks to a crowdfunding
campaign on Kickstarter. This allowed the company to raise funding of $1.2 million.

A flowable backfill
Fluidoroc® is a trench backfill manufactured with recycled mineral dust and a quick-setting
tying product. On contrary to a traditional backfill that requires smooth drum compaction
(e.g. stabilized sand), this flowable material perfectly fills all the cavities of a trench. It coats
sand, protects the cables and ducts at the basement and facilitates a quick final coating.
As there’s no shrinkage, repairing the roads will not undergo settling in the future and will
avoid the development of the well-known «pot-holes».
On contrary to a stabilized material, Fluidoroc® can be excavated again, without using any
heavy mechanical material. A simple spade can do the job.
Fluidoroc® can easily be carried on with mixing trucks, produces less annoyance (no noise,
no vibration due to compaction, no dust) occupies a smaller space and limits the time
needed for repair.
Tests on the material have been done in collaboration with the Centre de recherches routières,

Fire-proof insulation
panels
Protection against material flammability is increasingly important especially because of
the constraints given both by the legislation and the insurances. Time to evacuate people
outside a building on fire is very often excessive with regards to the velocity of the
flames. In addition, polyurethane (PU) or polystyrene panels, largely used as insulation
material in the construction sector, are often very flammable.
To improve the situation, Geogrind has developed a coating, based on the geopolymers
technology, that improves fire resistance as soon as it covers these panels.
Normalised tests (SBI test) demonstrate that the PU panel, when covered with a few
millimeters thick layer of geopolymer passed from class C (flammable material) to class B
(low flammability material). In addition the layer does not impact the thermal conductivity
coefficient of the panel.

A hybrid wood-concrete
constructive system
It is naturally comfortable to live in a wooden frame house. Wood is a natural and energyefficient material. However, some structural problems can appear : lack of rigidity and
inertia as well as a poor soundproofing between the different levels.
The Ecocasa system resolves these weaknesses. This hybrid concept brings both the
advantages of a wooden frame house and of a traditional house thanks to the « level
coupling system © ». Built with insulated concrete, the floor brings rigidity and inertia to
your house and guarantees a better acoustic comfort between the levels.
The solution offered by Ecocasa improves both quality and efficiency, and meets the
constraints of the respective constructive standards (thermal, acoustic, fire, ...).
This hybrid system today answers most of the demands from the construction sector, both
at the level of individual houses and of the apartment buildings.

A wood-made passive
modular home
Environmental benefits, new standards and the evolution of the cost of energy tend to
foster the development of sustainable constructions. However, additional costs linked to a
better insulation of the housings, combined with the evolution of the land purchase prices
and a more restrictive access to the sub-prime market make access to ownership more and
more difficult.
Naturhome just launched the concept of NCube houses to target people aged 30-35 as
they do not always have the financial capacity to build a wood-made house. Same quality
standards, same comfort but from 20% to 25% less expensive thanks to three tricks:
modules are pre-built which limits the interventions of sub-contractors, self-supporting
modules are standardised and, more importantly, costs linked to the sale are limited.
The client build his/her home virtually, room after room, detail after detail thanks to an
innovative on-line software program. At the end of the process, the final cost of the project
is known.

A slightly reinforced
structure
Carports, pergolas, suspended terraces, smoker shelters, awnings ... these are modern
trends in the construction sector. Often enough, they are less expensive and do not require
a planning permit. As an example, just compare a carport with a garage.
However, these shelters are often relatively weak and offer little resistance to extreme
meteorological conditions. This is why Eric Piette has developed the «G» structure that
reinforces these equipments.
All pieces are immersed in a high temperature high quality bath of zinc. This technique
offers a better protection and an excellent aesthetic appearance.
The pieces are assembled by bolting, the gutters are invisible and part of the structure.
Water is discharged through a column of the structure.

Mud bricks at a glance
Products “Terres d’Hautrage” are products based on natural clays for the eco-building
sector (coating, mortar and compressed mud bricks).
Built with local natural materials - clay is extracted from the company quarring - the
products do contain neither any binding agent nor any artificial stabiliser : nothing else
than clay and sand in addition to an orginal particle size distribution and an important
pressure (500 tons) when molded.
Nothing else than a mud brick ? Not really.
The concept «Argily» is innovative as it offers architects an almost infinite variety of shapes
: more than 500 different formats available ! In addition, the brick offers many advantages
for the comfort and health of users : very important thermal inertia, hypoallergenic
environment, large capability for hydro-regulation, smalll thermal effusivity, damping of
electro-magnetic waves and on top an environmentally-friendly material.

A smart plug for gasoline
tanks
Spytank is a company based in Mons and specialized in gasoline management and safety
products. The company has developed a range of smart plugs for gasoline tanks thanks to
an exclusive highly accurate sensor.
These universal plugs collect «on-line» all the data related to their manipulation (opening,
closure, filling, ...). A true revolution for the road transportation and civil engineering
sectors as they now can protect themselves against theft and hijacking of gasoline.
In addition to its unrivaled accuracy, the sensor is efficient whatever environmental
conditions are (climate, geographical location, ...). The probe and the processing algorithms
can validate anytime the effective consumption of the vehicle and the filling up to the
minute.

Industrial 3D printing
General 3D printing starts to become known. For a few hundreds of euros, everyone
can buy his/her own 3D printer. But as soon as it comes with industrial 3D printing
(additive manufacturing), it becomes less available. Equipments cost several hundreds
of thousands of euros, which is not affordable to all PMEs.
ADDIPARTS innovative services target this market.
What is the objective ? Provide companies with advices and professional 3D printing
services, in particular the rapid prototyping of complex pieces of single part to small
batch production (working prototypes, tooling, templates, production parts or spare
parts) made of high performance industrial thermoplastic materials.
These solutions reduce costs, risks and delays related to R&D, and speed up the availability
of new products on the market.

An ultra-fast spreader
Greencargo is an innovative agricultural machinery that manages three tasks in one,
spreading manures and composts at a speed of 15 km/h with an unrivaled accuracy and
efficiency. Greencargo uses a drone to identify soils production, map them, identify the
zones to amend and compute the optimal dosage (neither too high nor too low).
Greencargo is equipped with a GPS and, based on the mapping, will spread at places that
have been identified. The user will also have the certainty that the area has received the
adequate dosage. That will largely facilitate the task, as the traces of manure cannot always
be seen by the eye .
The technological solutions brought by Greencargo add cost efficiency at a perfect
timing.
