St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church St. Ignatius of Antioch 500 E. Depot St. Antioch, IL 60002 847-395-0652 www.ignatiusantioch.com Monthly Newsletter June 2015 CHARACTERISTS Many of you know that I am a big fan of dogs. I have owned many dogs. Currently our family has Labrador Retrievers. We love our Labs! If you visit the website of the American Kennel Club you find the following: The Labrador Retriever is a strongly built, medium-sized, short-coupled, dog possessing a sound, athletic, well-balanced conformation that enables it to function as a retrieving gun dog; the substance and soundness to hunt waterfowl or upland game for long hours under difficult conditions; the character and quality to win in the show ring; and the temperament to be a family companion. Physical features and mental characteristics should denote a dog bred to perform as an efficient Retriever of game with a stable temperament suitable for a variety of pursuits beyond the hunting environment. The most distinguishing characteristics of the Labrador Retriever are its short, dense, weather resistant coat; an "otter" tail; a clean-cut head with broad back skull and moderate stop; powerful jaws; and its "kind," friendly eyes, expressing character, intelligence and good temperament. Basically, the Labrador is a high-spirited, family centered and very active breed of dog. I think these same characteristics are found in the community of Saint Ignatius. We are high-spirited, work long hours under difficult conditions (think rummage sale), and we have a superb temperament. We are friendly, intelligent with expressive character and we love to be together as a family. On June 27 and 28 you have the opportunity to observe some Labradors in action. Our church has commitment to being “bird technicians” for a Hunting Retriever Club Hunt Test sponsored by a group called WISILL HRC. What is a “bird technician” you ask. Come to church on Monday, June 8 at 6:00 p.m. or Saturday, June 13 at 9:00 a.m. or Sunday, June 21 at 11:30 a.m. to find out. Our commitment to this venture is a fundraiser for our 100th Anniversary celebration on July 11. Participating in this event on June 27 and 28 will give you the chance to see the beautiful characteristics of a Labrador Retriever. It will also give you a glimpse into the spirit of St. Ignatius. See you in Church, Fr. Tim ST IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH Vestry Notes News from the Warden of the East! This month, your vestry met to consider many different topics, here is a quick synopsis of decisions made. Our kitchen will soon be a certi@ied commercial kitchen. We are working to obtain a Food Plan Review and Permit, which will grant us paperwork proving we have a commercial kitchen. This is important because a few groups pay to use our kitchen to prepare food for sale. It’s a win-‐win for all—we gain a little revenue, they gain a wonderful kitchen, and people have healthy food for purchase. Along the lines of housekeeping, the vestry approved the purchase of a new vacuum cleaner, that can actually clean our space for us. We will also purchase a 10 X 16 shed for Nick Brown to build as part of his Eagle Scout project. Nick will organize a St. Ignatius fundraiser to recoup those costs. The vestry voted to move forward with the planning for Nadia Bolz-‐Weber, a Lutheran pastor, author, and all-‐around “rock-‐star theologian”, to speak at St. Ignatius in the summer of 2016. See Linda Mizwicki if you’re interested in joining the planning committee. Friends, please remember that the minutes from all vestry meetings are posted on the bulletin board in the social hall, should you desire a more detailed account of our discussions. Linda Mizwicki, Warden Come on a Pilgrimage with Vacation Bible School! Parents, children, and young at heart, Mark you calendars for July 27-31, 9:00 am -1:00 pm Join our children and V.B.S. staff for a medieval pilgrimage to sacred places in Rome, Spain, England, Scotland, and Ireland. We will explore the medieval world through street fairs, guilds, crafts, songs, and games. We will listen to Bible stories, learn memory verses, and hear sagas of saints. As always, volunteers are welcome and donations are encouraged. See Linda Mizwicki for speci@ic information. This year, VBS has a special need. Because most of our volunteers also work in God’s Will Resale, we need people to cover their shifts. Without this help, we won’t be able to have a vigorous, fun, and educational Vacation Bible School. Please check your calendar for July 27-‐31, and listen for requests for times. The children of St. Ignatius and the larger community will thank you! VBS this year is sponsored by the Julieann Kriens Memorial Foundation. Julieanne was a passionate Sunday School and VBS teacher. Her family would like to sponsor our VBS program this year in loving memory of Julianne and her passion for God and children. This will help both causes. Thank you. ST IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH Nadia Bolz-Weber at St. Ignatius They say the church is dying, and it makes me angry. I can’t quite get on board with the death march. Perhaps I am sitting happily on the deck, listening to the band play Nearer My God to Thee, as the ship sinks under me. Perhaps I am utterly oblivious to the death throes all around me. The truth is, I love the church, the holy catholic church generally, and St. Ignatius of Antioch speci@ically. If the church is on its last legs, at least St. Ignatius is raging against the dying of the light. We are a brave, forward thinking congregation who does not admit defeat. This month, our vestry carefully considered a bold proposition, discussed it openly and respectfully, and voted their consciences. Now, my friends, I have strong opinions on a few subjects. Ask me about the Bear’s chances to win the next Super Bowl, and I’ve got nothing to say. Ask me about popular theologians, or the direction St. Ignatius should take in Christian Formation, and you might get an earful. One of the things I value about this community is that when I speak freely about my opinions, I meet conversation, consideration, and respectful discussion. Just because I feel strongly about something does NOT mean I am right. I depend on my friends to speak just as passionately about their views. This vestry does a good job of that, and we still truly love each other at the end of the day. At our last meeting, we considered a decision close to my heart, hosting Nadia Bolz-‐Weber for a speaking engagement in 2016. If you took a grace-‐@iled, passionate faith in Jesus and a commitment to loving all (the LGBTQ community, people struggling with mental illness or addiction, hipsters and suburban soccer moms), wrapped it up in brilliant, sardonic, sarcastic wit, sprinkle liberally with swear words, and cover with tattoos, you get the theological genius of Nadia Bolz-‐Weber. Nadia is one of the foremost voices in contemporary Christianity, and one of my personal super-‐heroes. People who haven’t yet heard of her may not understand this, but Nadia is the theological equivalent of a bona-‐@ide rock star. I know people who drive two hours one way and paid $50, along with 400 other people, to see speak her on a snowy Saturday in January 2015. Every event she books sells up to 400 tickets. I have no doubts that this event will be a raging success for this church. We have a clear idea of our costs and I have every con@idence that this event will NOT cost the church money. To ensure this, the vestry is watching our progress on this very closely, and expecting a very clear plan. Anyone with questions or concerns is welcome to the research we have gathered. We need enthusiastic, energized, and creative people to work on this, so if the idea of an inspiring speaker inspires you, please join the committee. Just to whet your appetite, here is a little slice of Nadia. From her website bio: Nadia Bolz-Weber is the founding pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, Colorado. She is author of Salvation on the Small Screen? 24 Hours of Christian Television (Seabury 2008) and the New York Times best selling theological memoir, Pastrix: the Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint (Jericho, 2013). Her writings can be found in the Christian Century, The Lutheran Magazine and Patheos.com. Nadia has been featured in The Washington Post, Bitch Magazine, NPR’s Morning Edition, More Magazine, The Daily Beast and on CNN. Nadia is not only a famous name, but she is the real deal, full of the gospel and alive with passion for Christ. Here is an excerpt from her book, Pastrix on the nature of grace. “God’s grace is not defined as God being forgiving to us even though we sin. Grace is when God is a source of wholeness, which makes up for my failings. My failings hurt me and others and even the planet, and God’s grace to me is that my brokenness is not the final word. My selfishness is not the end-all… instead, it’s that God makes beautiful things out of even my own s***. Grace isn’t about God creating humans as flawed beings and then acting all hurt when we inevitably fail and then stepping in like the hero to grant us grace—like saying, “Oh, it’s OK, I’ll be a good guy and forgive you.” It’s God saying, “I love the world too much to let your sin define you and be the final word. I am a God who makes all things new.” (Bolz-Weber, 2013, p. 50) Bolz-Weber, N. (2013). Pastrix: The cranky, beautiful faith of a sinner and saint. New York: Jericho Books. ST IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH Outreach Outreach - As we talk about Open Arms and Sharing Center and the need to continue and improve our outreach ministry I am always actively looking for additional outreach opportunities. However we have some wonderful ones already in place such as the following. There are bins in the vestibule for on going donations. Take a minute, check it out and donate! Terra Cycle Bin A Safe Place Open Arms Bin The beard is Gone but not for Long! On May 29, Kathy & Ernie Kraak participated in a Relay for Life event. Ernie challenged Kathy to raise $1,000 and he would shave his beard off. After announcing that in church, Mike Culat challenged them to raise another $1,000 and then Ernie would wear a Bear’s jersey to church for two weeks. Kathy took both challenges seriously and raised over $2,300. Her team raised not quite $5,000 and the event has raised over $81,000. Thank you to all donated to this cause. As Ernie says, it’s only a beard and in the words of the great St. Vince, the Pack (jersey and beard) will be back. CRAFTERS & VENDORS WANTED ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL Saturday, October 3, 2015 9 :00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Crafters and Vendors – $50 a space Application Deadline: June 15th ($25 late fee for applications received after deadline) Spread the word share this with everyone! The Festival is huge…. 100th Anniversary The invitations are in the mail, excitement is in the air, a wonderful mass with beautiful music and choral pieces, and the Bishop will preside over the blessing of the Confirmands. Luncheon to follow at the VFW. Such wonderful times at St. Ignatius. If you have some time on Friday July 10 please let me know as more hands will help get the church and the VFW set up. Bonnie Adriansen 847-612-6986. God's Will Resale Shop The huge sale was just that. It reminded us of a mini rummage sale. People waiting for the doors to open each day and the parking lot full most of the time. We grossed over $6,000 in the four days and certainly cleaned us out. However never fear for the lack of donations as more has filled the empty spaces. Our wish is for more volunteers. Maybe one of them is YOU or a friend you know. Please share the information on God's Will Resale Shop. Another wish is to have a dedicated handy man help one day a week. There is always things to fix, things to move around, helping in all areas. Yes that maybe be you or know someone that would love to help! Bonnie Adriansen 847-612-6986. Newsletter Challenge The months of June, July and August are the three months of the challenge for you to bring in a new Newsletter Advertiser. When the deal is made you will have a chance to win a wonderful gift card. The Newsletter information and application is in the Social Hall. Take one or more. Bonnie Adriansen, 847-612-6986.
