How to Use This Book
Transitions 2008-2009 is just as much a resource guide as it is a
textbook. It includes advice, information, and strategies designed to
make your academic career and extracurricular or personal interests
more productive and enjoyable. Your University 101 instructor(s)
will direct your attention to several sections of this textbook to
facilitate your progress in defining and reaching your personal and
academic goals.
Each chapter has been written with you in mind! They each contain
information specific to the University of South Carolina-Columbia,
including the history, campus involvement opportunities, program
and services provided for students, and important information
you should know as a student. However, the chapters also contain
information and advice applicable to your extra-curricular life as a
student. We hope that you thoughtfully take note of these lessons
and then selectively act upon them. Essential chapter segments were
written by experts across the campus to provide for you the most
up-to-date, accurate information. These experts are key resource
faculty and staff working at the University who are here to help
and support you.
At the beginning of each chapter, you will find a letter written to
you by a South Carolina University 101 Peer Leader or Graduate
Leader. In these letters, students offer their perspectives, expertise, and advice on the topics discussed in the chapter. You also will
discover, throughout the book, many more Peer Leaders’ words of
advice, tips, and cautions.
At the end of each chapter, you additionally will find important
contact information to enable you to connect with valuable resources mentioned throughout the chapter. This allows you to jump
immediately to the end of a chapter if you are looking for a specific
office location, web site, or phone number. We also include a helpful
calendar of events and a campus map at the back of the book.
Transitions only will be helpful to you if you use it. Use it not only
as your instructor directs, but also as a personal resource, reference,
and handbook. If you do so, we know this student success book will
serve you well! Above all, Transitions 2008-2009 is intended especially
for you to be “Your Book!”
