People are throwing tomatoes at one another. It looks like a
fight, but everyone is laughing. What is going on?
You can see this exciting scene during La Tomatina, a tomato
fight festival in Buñol, Spain. This festival is held every year on
the last Wednesday of August. Back in the 1940s, some friends
got in a fight on the streets. They took fruit from a nearby food
stand and threw it at one another. Passers-by joined in their fight.
Everyone had so much fun that it became a yearly festival.
On the morning of the festival, people begin to gather at the
town’s main plaza. At 11 o’clock, tons of tomatoes arrive and are
poured out onto the crowd. Tomatoes start flying everywhere and
soon everything is covered in red tomato juice. People shout and
have great fun. Two hours later, the fight ends and everyone helps
to clean up. In a few hours, the streets are clean again... until next
year!
