This summer is flying by! Thank
you for your faithfulness in standing with us. Summer is always a
difficult time financially for any
ministry, and that is especially
true for 3ABN. We have additional expense in covering camp
meetings and bringing you the
live programming from ASI,
James W. Gilley which this year is in Orlando,
Florida. In addition, income that
3ABN President
comes through the mail is usually
down from the rest of the year.

can see how it can be stressful!
This month we celebrate 3ABN
Latino’s Tenth Anniversary, and I
never tire of hearing John Dinzey
tell of how he presented the idea
to Danny Shelton, and how after
listening for a minute, Danny
said, “Let’s do it!” This was a total
faith venture, since 3ABN was
over a million dollars behind in
income at that time!
John says, “Most people would
say, ‘Lets wait until things are better,’ but instead, Danny said, ‘Let’s
do it!’ I was surprised and thrilled
with the faith Danny displayed.”
John and Idalia have logged
hundreds of thousands of miles
around the United States and
Latin America, preaching the
gospel and promoting 3ABN
to cable companies in Mexico,
South and Central America, and
the Caribbean. Evangelist Eddie
Canales, who spoke on 3ABN
Latino recently, shared some of
the many stories that have come
to his attention, including the couple in Boise, Idaho, who recently
joined the church because of
watching his prophecy seminar.

have received the three angels’
messages of Revelation 14 by

Beyon 3ABN Latino
Celebrates 10 Years!

T
his year marks ten years
since 3ABN Latino began
proclaiming the three
angels’ messages of Revelation 14
to over 300 million people on every
inhabited continent of the world
who speak Spanish and Portuguese!
We sat down with the general manager, John Dinzey, and asked him to
look back over those years.
3ABN World: John, the Lord
planted the idea of a Spanish language network in your mind many
years ago. Did you have any idea
how big His plans were?
John Dinzey: Absolutely not.
God has far surpassed anything I
could have imagined. I had no idea it
would grow so fast, reach so far, and
be so exciting. Here in the United
States we have to plan our strategy,
target an area, get the churches

and members on board, motivate
them to write and call their cable
companies asking for 3ABN Latino,
and then wait for their executives
to evaluate whether it’s in their best
interest to add us to their lineup.
I remember the deep sigh I
breathed when I realized how much
work that would be, but the Lord
had everything worked out. He
knew the pastors and lay people
He’d impress to come forward out
of nowhere. I have no idea how
they found the time to visit cable
companies—without any prompting
from us. They just did it—and now
some of them are just as persistent in
asking us for the equipment needed
to put 3ABN Latino on those cable
systems. Since we have a limited
budget for this, many of them have
purchased equipment themselves!
World: Some readers may not
know the 3ABN Latino story. Can
you give us the highlights?
Dinzey: Sure. When I arrived
at 3ABN in 1989, I knew it was an
English language network. So I was
surprised to find we were airing an
hour-and-a-half of Spanish programs seven days a week. However,
about six months later, Spanish
programming was cut to five days.
Then in 1992 we started renting
Channel 21 in San Juan, Puerto
Rico. That was the first channel
to broadcast 3ABN outside the
continental United States. It was
also a time when we began filing
many new applications to build
television stations.
In 1993, when we purchased
Channel 21, Danny had great
hopes of having a studio there to
produce Spanish programming
to be broadcast locally. I was sent
to work on this, and while I was
there, Spanish programming was
cut on the network to only three
days! I was told
that this was because 90
percent of 3ABN’s viewers were
changing channels or shutting off
their TVs when we aired Spanish
programs!
A question popped into my
mind, I wonder if we’re going to
need a Spanish channel? (I believe
God put that question there!)
World: So what happened?
Dinzey: Well, 3ABN broadcast
several Net evangelistic series in
cooperation with the Seventh-day
Adventist Church in the mid- to late
90s. These programs were simultaneously translated into Spanish, and
they created great excitement among
the Hispanic community. Suddenly
they were asking for more! In 1999
the North American Division of
the church invited us to produce a
Spanish evangelistic series in Florida
with Pastor Alejandro Bullón called
La Red ’99. I was convinced. We are
going to need a Spanish channel!

During 3ABN’s Day of Prayer
in 2000, Danny asked us to come
see him if the Lord put a burden
on our hearts for some type of
ministry. “Maybe we can pray
together and see what the Lord
would have us do,” he said. I felt
my heart stir strongly, and I took it
as a personal invitation. I got busy
doing research. How many people
speak Spanish in the United States?
How many speak it worldwide?
I wondered. Soon I discovered
there were over 400 million people
who spoke Spanish as their first
language!
I invited several others to help
me put together a presentation for
Danny, but just before we talked to
him, I was suddenly afraid. We’ve
just been told that 3ABN’s contributions are far below normal for
this time of year, I thought. Maybe
this isn’t the right time to ask!
Returning to my office, I got on
my knees, and prayed, “Lord, You
know this has been on my mind
for almost ten years now. I see the
need, but I don’t know if it is Your
will for this to happen right now.
If it is, then please impress Danny
to do this. And if not, Lord, please
give me peace about it.”
Suddenly I felt completely

calm. As I presented the first few
facts, Danny suddenly spoke up.
“John, through working with
the Russian people, I’ve learned
that English programs translated
into another language don’t have
nearly the impact as programs
recorded in their native language,”
he said.
Wow. That was my next presentation point! I thought. He took the
words out of my mouth!
Then, he cut to the chase. “So
where are we going with this?”
“Well, I believe we need a Spanish network,” I stammered.
He looked straight at me and
said, “Then let’s do it!”
I wondered if I’d heard correctly, so I asked, “Does this mean
we can tell others about this?”
“Sure,” he replied. “Just go to
Moses Primo (3ABN’s director
of broadcasting and engineering)
and see what we’ll need as far
as satellite bandwidth. See how
soon we can get started.” Then he
added, “And please pray, because
we’re still about $1 million behind
in donations.”
I left that meeting stunned!

wasn’t afraid to take on
another challenge! I remember
thinking, This man still believes!
The announcement about the
new network was made during
a live broadcast in Puerto Rico
in 2001, and the next two years
were filled with much preparation,
program production, and prayer
before we launched in August
2003. Praise the Lord!
World: What has the Lord
accomplished over those years?
Dinzey: Well, we have a presence in nearly all the Latin American countries, except for Paraguay
and Uruguay—and we’re working
on those! In Cuba, where it’s illegal
to air our programs, we’ve set up
a DVD duplication program to
help the Adventist churches get
our programs to the people. We’ve
produced multiple evangelism
events in Colombia, Mexico, and
Puerto Rico. We’ve also worked
with our friends in Mexico and
Puerto Rico, producing programs
in their studios.
World: Did you ever dream of
doing this type of ministry work?
Dinzey: Actually, when I was a
young boy living in the Dominican
Republic, the Lord impressed me
with a thought I’ve pursued ever
since: John, I have
something special I want
you to do for Me.
When 3ABN Latino launched,
I asked, Is this what You had in
mind for me, Lord? And as far as
I’m concerned it is—at least until
I hear otherwise!
Next year we’re planning an
evangelistic series with Pastors
Robert Costa and Mark Finley
in Bucaramanga, Colombia; two
series with Pastor Andrés Portes
in Mexico City and Rome; and one
in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
I’m so grateful for the support
of our leaders, and 3ABN’s board
of directors. Our president, Pastor
Jim Gilley, has the same vision
and courage to step out in faith as
our founder, Danny Shelton. I’m
blessed to work with a staff that’s
absolutely committed to spreading
the gospel. And I’m blessed by the
faithful support of my wife Idalia,
who’s so encouraging in everything
we attempt to do for the Lord.
Nothing compares to the joy
of seeing lives transformed by the
power of the Holy Spirit! There’s
nothing in this world I would
rather do!

ave you noticed how many secular doctors are writing books about eating healthier and recommending a plant-based diet these days? Suddenly beans
and lentils are catching the interest of a lot of people—but
who is causing that interest?
The Seventh-day Adventist Church was given a health
message to impart to the world—and the world is finally
interested! Consider what Ellen White wrote in 1900: “The
gospel of health has able advocates, but their work has been
made very hard because so many … have failed to give the
question of health reform its proper attention. They have not
recognized it in its relation to the work of the message as the
right arm of the body. While very little respect has been shown
to this department by many of the people and by some of the
ministers, the Lord has shown His regard for it by giving it
abundant prosperity. When properly conducted, the health
work is an entering wedge, making a way for other truths to
reach the heart. When the third angel’s message [see Revelation 14:6–12] is received in its fullness, health reform will
be given its place … in the work of the church, in the home,
at the table, and in all the household arrangements. Then the
right arm will serve and protect the body.” (Testimonies for
the Church, Volume 6, p. 327.)
With great simplicity this dear lady stated that the health
message is the entering wedge or the “toe in the door,” if
you will. If we clear our arteries, our thinking will become

clearer—making us far more receptive to God’s spiritual
message.
Currently, 3ABN Radio airs 13 health programs, covering
everything from home remedies to emotional and mental
well-being. The health message is being spread through
each of our radio affiliates around the world. I receive calls
and e-mails every day from listeners asking about recipes,
or wanting to order a copy of a program that addresses some
disease they’re struggling with. Recently, one e-mail stood out
because of its simplicity and honesty. There were no words in
the body of the e-mail, just this subject line request: “I love
your health programs and am interested in learning more.”
Isn’t that what the world is asking?
Have You Heard His Voice?
If God has impressed you to explore the idea of building a
radio station in your area, please don’t ignore His voice. There’s
important work to be done, and the Holy Spirit is calling God’s
people to this work.
“But I don’t know anything about building or running a
radio station!” you say.
Well, if that’s the case, you’re in excellent company! It’s
exactly what the produce manager, the steel mill worker, the
dentist, the cardiologist, the lawyer, the in-home caregiver, the
retired insurance salesman, the school bus driver, and most of
the others thought—who are now operating a radio station!
God isn’t looking for the qualified; He’s looking for the willing!
Noah’s Ark
Remember the lessons from Noah’s Ark: Don’t miss the boat. Plan ahead—it wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark. Stay fit. When you’re 60 years old, someone may ask you
to do something very big. Don’t listen to critics—just get on with what needs to
get done. Remember: the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic
by professionals. No matter the storm, when God is with you there’s always a
rainbow waiting!

Awesome?
Wouldn’t It Be

Something came
to mind that I’d
never considered.
It was almost
overwhelming.
I wonder if we
can find enough
different aspects
of Jesus Christ’s
Second Coming for
a whole series?
t was mid-October 2012, and I was thinking and
praying about a topic for our annual 3ABN Latino
Camp Meeting event. Each year we tape between 16
and 18 hours on a given topic, featuring anywhere from
eight to twelve speakers, and the Lord always blesses
us with excellent and inspiring messages to air during
the last weekend in May.
For about four years, we focused on the Ten Commandments. Then we moved on to the major doctrines
of the Bible in the Pillars of Our Faith series. Since our
topic for 2012 had centered on the major prophecies of
the Old Testament, it was natural to think we should
focus on the prophecies of the New Testament in 2013.
I’d talked to a few 3ABN staff members about possible
topics, and a few ideas surfaced; in particular, the Heavenly
Sanctuary and Christ’s ministry as our High Priest seemed
to top our lists. However, even though these topics and several others were great, we felt there was something else we
should focus on.
That Can’t Be!
I remember talking to a pastor who called from Florida
several years ago. “So what are you going to do this year for
the Ten Commandments Weekend?” he’d asked.
“Well, we’re considering not having it this year,” I answered.
He was shocked. “What? You’re not doing it? Why, that
can’t be! You have to do it! We look

That conversation put me in a dilemma, and really made
me think. I remembered hearing and reading many touching
comments, including this one: “My family and I were greatly
blessed by your programming this past weekend. After listening to so many speakers and so many Scripture texts about
the Ten Commandments, it made so much sense. I never
realized how wonderful the Ten Commandments are, until
this past weekend. After watching this series my family and
I have decided to be baptized.”
Wouldn’t It Be Awesome
My dilemma continued until the day 3ABN Latino’s production manager, Jorge Jaque, and I were exchanging ideas,
and something came to mind that I’d never considered. It was
almost overwhelming. I wonder if we can find enough different
aspects of Jesus Christ’s Second Coming for a whole series?
When I shared that thought with Jorge, his enthusiasm
was instantaneous!
“Wait! Wow! What a topic!” he exclaimed. “Johnny, that
would be awesome if we could do it on the Second Coming!”
I believe the Lord blessed us with that idea, but his excitement was what helped convince me it should be our theme.
By God’s grace, we taped the series in the Garland Spanish
Seventh-day Adventist Church, near Dallas, Texas, and aired
them on 3ABN Latino.
I was immensely blessed by each presentation, and I trust
our viewers and listeners were, too. Our prayer is that their lives
will be transformed, and that they will all be inspired to prepare
for the soon return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

M
arco Clark’s life was changing forever. His parents had met
with his school guidance counselor, and now they sat him
down for a family talk. Prior to this, he thought he’d been
doing fine. He was a popular and athletic eleven-year-old, but now he
was labeled a “functional illiterate.” He didn’t know what that meant,
but he knew it was something bad. Looking into his parents’ eyes, he
saw their disappointment, and it turned his little world upside down!
School was especially challenging to Marco. It took him five years to
graduate from high school, and his teachers thought that he was “slow.”
Marco didn’t have difficulty with words, or their definitions. He had a
comprehension problem, and it wasn’t until college that he finally found
out he had a learning disability. A college professor identified the fact that
Marco had a reading problem, and that discovery changed his life!
In his heart, he had always felt that if he could read better,
he could really be a scholar—and so it was. Marco went on to

i boys and girls! When we lived at Camp AuSable in
Michigan, we had a camp pet named Sam the Ram. He was
very big, and when we tied a rope around his neck he’d follow
us around. As long as he wore the rope, Sam was gentle and
would let us pet him. But when the rope was off, he turned
into a mean ram! He’d back up and then run forward as fast as he could
with his head bent down—right into the first person he saw! After Sam
knocked them down, he’d back up and try to keep hitting them to keep
them from getting up! One day Sam escaped his pen and wandered up by
the dining room where we were having worship. He saw his refection in
the glass doors, and before anyone could catch him, Sam came crashing
right through the glass doors! Everyone jumped up in fear—until we
managed to get the rope around his neck again. Like Sam the Ram, as
long as we’re following Jesus and keeping His Commandments, we’re
good and kind to others. But when we take our eyes off Jesus and try
to go our own way, we become selfish, mean, and get into all kinds of
trouble! We need to ask Jesus to keep His rope of protection around us.
Remember Jesus loves you—and I do, too!

fter speaking in New Port Richie, Florida, 3ABN president,
Pastor Jim Gilley, saw a familiar couple coming his way. Pastor
Gary and Juanita Grimes were old friends, and they introduced
him to Connie Korcsmaros.
“We’re always thrilled when we get a chance to meet someone who
has found more truth by watching 3ABN,” he says, “and Connie was
certainly one of these. This lady is on fire for the Lord, and I know you’ll
be blessed by her testimony!”
Difficult Beginning
Little Connie was adopted when
she was two, but says her home was
a terrible place to grow up. “I was
the only child, and they renamed
me Vicky,” she says. “My father was
a drunk and would pass out on the
couch all the time. However, my
mother would take me to church
with her on Sundays, and I learned
about Jesus. I’ve always loved Him,
and I’ve always said my prayers
every night. But by the time I was
15, life had become unbearable,
and I told my father I was going to
run away.”
Connie’s determination to overcome her difficult circumstances
no doubt served her well. She’s
been married for 23 years and has
raised two wonderful daughters.
But before her adoptive mother
passed away, she handed Connie
her birth certificate.
“I knew I’d been adopted, so I just
put it in my purse. Then later, in my
forties, I decided to look up my birth
mother. That’s when I discovered
my name was Connie Francis, and
I liked it so much, I changed it back.
“When I found my dad and discovered I had brothers and sisters,
I just freaked out!” she exclaims.
“Today I talk to my mom at least
three times a week, and stay in touch
with my dad by e-mail, too.”
Connie’s been on a quest for
truth all her life. “I learned about
Jesus, but I was never taught any
truths,” she says. “My husband and I
began visiting an Episcopal Church,
but then we stopped attending. I
tried finding fulfillment in drinking
and dancing, and even school, but
nothing was satisfying. One day a
neighbor told my husband about
a church and we began attending.
However, I felt like I needed more.”
Cancer?
Then came the day that changed
Connie’s life. “It was June of 2011,
and a week or so after a routine
mammogram I received a call from
my doctor’s office telling me that my
results were abnormal, and that I’d
need more tests.
“I was scared, so after that call, I
started talking and praying to God
a lot more! That’s when my daughter offered me one of her Christian
music CDs. I was finally ready to
listen, and the words really touched
me. I got closer to Jesus, and I’d look
up at the sky and just sing to Him
on my way to and from work!
“Finally, the doctor called me in
to show me the abnormalities, and it
was very scary. He told me I’d need
a biopsy at the end of the month,
so I kept listening to my Christian
CDs while I waited.
“A few of the pastors would say, ‘Happy
Sabbath,’ and I thought, I wonder why
they’re saying that...?”
“Then the miracle happened. At
the end of that month, the doctor
said, ‘I can’t biopsy what I cannot
see!’ I believe God allowed that cancer scare to get my attention—and
it worked! I thanked God I didn’t
have breast cancer, and I continued
to grow closer to Him. I threw out
all my rock and pop CDs, rock
star autographs, and magazines.
Then I deleted those songs from
my iPod and replaced them with
Christian music. I stopped skipping
church, and started recording two
TV sermons each weekend to watch
during the week. People at work
began seeing a difference in
me, and I explained to them
that I was following Jesus.”
Another Station
“Then, at the beginning of 2012,
I began recording a couple of other
TV stations, and one of them
was 3ABN,” Connie continues. “I
noticed a few of the pastors would
say, ‘Happy Sabbath,’ and I thought,
I wonder why they’re saying that, since
they’re not Jewish?
“I thought the Sabbath was a
Jewish tradition, but one day, after
watching Pastor Doug Batchelor,
I saw a commercial that said, ‘For
thousands of years, man has worshiped God on the seventh day of the
week. But now millions worship on
the first day. Who changed it? And
does it matter? Go to SabbathTruth.
com and find out.’
“I wrote down the web address,
and began researching the Sabbath
Connie visited the
website SabbathTruth.com and discovered that the
Sabbath begins and
ends at sundown.
on my own by googling, ‘What day
is the Sabbath? Saturday or Sunday?’
(I would have saved myself a lot of
time if I’d just gone to the website!)
“I began honoring the Sabbath
on Sunday, and when I explained it
to my mom, she did, too. We began
resting from house and yard work,
avoided buying, selling, or doing our
own pleasure that day. I also told my
husband I’d be grocery shopping on
Saturday, not Sunday.
“Then I researched the Sabbath
some more, and suddenly realized I had the wrong day!” Connie
exclaims. “The Sabbath was Saturday, not Sunday! So I called my mom
and told her ‘We’ve been honoring
the wrong day!’ Her husband then
said he already knew this, and she
said, ‘Then why didn’t you tell me?’
“I was so happy to find this out—
but I still didn’t have it right, because
I was honoring the Sabbath from
midnight to midnight!”
Even More Truth
Connie says she finally visited
the SabbathTruth.com website in
June 2012. “I should have done it in
the first place!” she says. “So I called
my mom again and said, “We’re still
not right! The Sabbath begins on
Friday at sunset, and ends at sunset
on Saturday!”
“ ‘Then I’ll start keeping it from
sunset to sunset!’ she told me.”
Connie’s decisions came with
some challenges. “I requested a
meeting with my senior pastor,
but he was out of town, so I spoke
with another pastor at the church.
I e-mailed him on what the church
taught about the Sabbath, and he
replied that Christians are no longer under the Law. So I asked him
if he believed we now have nine
commandments, instead of ten, and
at that point he invited me to come
see him the next Sunday. I brought
some Scripture texts, but discovered
he didn’t believe we are under any of
the Ten Commandments; that Jesus
had nailed them all to the cross.
“When I tried to explain from
Scripture that we are to keep God’s
commandments, and that Jesus
nailed the ceremonial laws to the
cross, he wouldn’t listen, and got
annoyed with me. So I told him I’d
still keep Sabbath holy, and he said,
‘That’s fine. We have a Saturday
service.’ ”
Connie decided to look for
churches in her city that kept the
Sabbath, and she found the New
Port Richie Seventh-day Adventist
Church. The next Sabbath, she was
there.
“Eventually my husband and I
met with the senior pastor [of our
former church], and when I mentioned the Seventh-day Adventists,
he said, ‘Do you know they are a
cult?’ I didn’t expect that from him,
and I couldn’t defend any of his
accusations, since I’d only attended
a few services. Finally he asked if
I thought Sunday keepers were all
going to hell, and I said, ‘No!’ Then
he said, ‘The church you’re going to
thinks that!’ to which I replied, ‘I’ve
never been taught that.’”
Her pastor went on to say that
God only meant for us to get spiritual
rest, and that any day was fine. “My
day is Friday,” he offered.
On her way home, Connie called
her new Adventist friends, Pastor
Gary Grimes and his wife Juanita,
and they were immensely reassuring.
Soon she decided to be re-bap
tized and asked Pastor Grimes if he
would be willing to baptize her.
“We began to study with her,
and soon realized that Connie
knew the Bible teachings as well as
we did, because she’d been studying with 3ABN!” Pastor Grimes
exclaims. “She is especially wellversed in the Sabbath, and is such
a blessing to us!”
“I googled,‘What day is the Sabbath?
Saturday or Sunday?’”
After her baptism on November
17, 2012, Connie says she felt compelled to work in prison ministry. “I
watched 3ABN’s Free Indeed series,
and I feel that God is calling me to
minister in a women’s prison. And
while I’m waiting for clearance, I’m
ministering through the mail.
“He’s also laid a burden on my
heart to e-mail pastors of Sunday
churches, asking them about the
Sabbath and sending them some
Bible texts to consider. I just plant the
seeds—the rest is up to God.
“My passion for the Lord is over
the top, and I’ve learned so much
truth watching 3ABN. I became a
vegetarian years ago when I watched
the movie Babe, but since I became
an Adventist, I stopped drinking,
too! Our awesome Father in Heaven
is using 3ABN to spread His truths,
and He’s certainly blessed my life.
There’s nothing I’d rather do than be
a witness to others of the new truths

ur workers have amazing stories of how the Lord brought them
here, and recently we asked Adam Dean, one of our talented
graphic artists, to share his with us.
“I’ve always enjoyed drawing,” he
begins, “and my parents did a lot to
nurture that. But even though I was
raised a Seventh-day Adventist, I
lost interest in spiritual things when
I began college.
“While interviewing for my first
job, I discovered that two of the
owners of the graphic design studio were Adventists, so I told them
I was one, too—even though I
hadn’t been to church in a while!
Through their influence, and that
of the Adventist-owned TV station
in town, I began attending sporadically again.”
“ Then a few years later, I
interviewed for a job at Walmart
headquarters. There I learned the
department staff had to work two
Saturdays a month, but was happy
when they agreed to let me work on
Sundays, instead.”
Life in the Balance
Adam had suffered with Crohn’s,
an inflammatory bowel disease
that often requires multiple surgeries and brings great pain and
discomfort. And now, just days
after accepting his new job, he woke
up from a hospital test and heard
his doctors discussing emergency
surgery to remove a large mass!
Thankfully, they found it was not
cancerous, but he remained hospitalized for several weeks.
“Laying in Intensive Care, I wondered whether I’d even survive,” he
says. “Then a friend visited me and
asked, ‘Adam, if you don’t make it,
are you at peace with the Lord?’ I
was heavily sedated, but her question cut like a lightning bolt through
the drugs. This was the turning
point of my life—I didn’t deny any
of God’s truths, I just didn’t have a
personal relationship with Jesus!
“I began attending church again,
and although I’d refused to work
on Sabbath, I still wasn’t keeping it holy—and the Lord had me
under growing conviction. When
I read Isaiah 58:13–14, where God
promises to bless us for keeping
His day holy, I was finally convicted
that knowing the doctrines wasn’t
enough. I needed to know Him!
A few weeks later I began looking forward to going home after
church—instead of to the movies!
My pastor made me a greeter, and
then a deacon. Next I began min
istering door-to-door, and even
joined a jail ministry.”
Big Changes
After seven years, Adam was
a fully vested employee, enjoying
company benefits and a nice home.
“I was given wonderful opportunities and received excellent training,”
he says, “but they began restructuring the Marketing Department,
offering severance to those who
might want to leave. I thought, This
may be my chance to work for a ministry! and began seeking God’s will.
“Eventually our department was
displaced, and I was grateful for the
severance package. Then I heard of a
graphic designer position at 3ABN.
After interviewing, I decided to stay
for the weekend, and as I drove to
church, I prayed, Lord, it would be
nice if someone invited me home for
lunch. As soon as I walked in the
door, Ann and Owen Troy greeted
me—and did just that! That was
my sign!
“There’s a hallway at Walmart
headquarters covered with awards
for the millionth gadget sold,” Adam
says. “But instead of selling things,
God allows me to touch thousands
of people for eternity here at 3ABN.
He’s been with me all the way, and
although I’ve had to walk by faith,
He’s made it clear—He wants me
here!”

Back
he major cause of backache is weakness of the muscles that keep
it in proper alignment. Overweight is the most predisposing
factor, since the muscles aren’t strong enough to carry the weight
of the excess body fat. This body fat can infiltrate between the muscle
fibers, further reducing their strength.
Women are more likely than men to have backaches, but men in
sedentary occupations, or who strain their back through heavy use,
should be careful to avoid improper lifting.
Other Causes
Since emotional tension is a
common cause of backaches, sufferers should immediately search
for tension-producing factors in
their living situation or at work.
Simple overeating results in
heavy chemicals in the blood,
decreasing its ability to enter the
capillaries of the muscles that support the joints. This reduction of
oxygen and nourishment causes an

increase in tension and allows toxic
products to build up, irritating the
nerves that signal the brain that
something is wrong. Many will
find their backaches disappear after
fasting or adopting a diet of fruit
and whole grain bread for about
two days—eating only at regular
mealtimes and avoiding late evening foods.
The upper back, shoulders, and
neck can be the source of much
pain, but usually these are positional, or due to some previous
injury. To correct this, the muscles need to be strengthened and
posture needs to be corrected. It
is especially important to maintain a comfortable position at work.
In addition, constitutional factors such
as constipation, menstruation, pregnancy,
pelvic tumors, and hypoglycemia may all
produce backaches.

can be the source of much pain, but

Simple Remedies
Simple outdoor exercise strengthens the
muscles, tightens the ligaments, and realigns
the structures of the lower back. Walking,
gardening, and housekeeping activities can
provide significant relief.
For acute back strain, an eight-minute ice
massage over the painful area and six inches
of surrounding tissues can frequently cure
the problem if applied during the first 72
hours. You may use ice cubes or a simple
6-ounce block of ice made by freezing water
in a Styrofoam cup, peeling away the edges
as needed.
After 72 hours, apply hot towels for three
minutes, followed by ice-cold towels for 30
seconds, repeating the changes four to five
times. These treatments increase the circulation to the back, reduce the pain, and tend to
increase the healing of inflamed tissues.
Try these simple
stretching exercises:
Stand with heels four inches from the wall
and press back to it. Tilt the pelvis and tuck
buttocks under, flattening the lower back
curve. Contract the abdomen and buttock
muscles, hold for 30 seconds, relax for five
seconds, and repeat.
Stand facing a wall, toes on a line two feet
out. Place hands on wall at a level a little
lower than the shoulders. Lean into wall
while keeping heels on the floor, hold for ten
seconds. Push up for three seconds. Repeat
three times. Repeat daily for 30 days.
Sit in chair, hugging one knee to chest.
Raise other leg level to chair seat, keeping
knee straight and toes pointed up. Hold for
a few seconds, then alternate.
While lying on floor face down, raise arms,
legs, head, and shoulders off floor above
the back so the entire body is supported on
the abdomen and hold for several seconds.
Build up time to two minutes.
Lie on floor on back. Arch back and support body weight on heels and shoulders,
keeping head off floor. Maintain position
for several seconds, building up gradually
to two minutes.

utrition doesn’t come any
easier, quicker—or tastier!
This cross-cultural favorite is quick and handy for lunch or
dinner. The vitamin-packed leafy
greens and the wholesome, hearty
goodness of the potatoes combine
with any number of additional
entrées to give your family and
friends a filling and satisfying eating experience. Best of all, it won’t
tie you to the kitchen for long! And
here’s a bonus: This dish will be
a welcome menu addition for all
you calorie counters and weight
watchers!
This dish lends itself to any
number of seasoning combinations, so get creative and try different things. You’ll be well rewarded
for short time it takes to create—
and consume!
ingredients
1 pound small potatoes
1 pound spinach
1 Wash and peel potatoes. Leave them whole, or if you only have
large ones, cut them in pieces.
½ cup pine nuts
2 Wash and chop spinach.
3 cloves garlic, divided
and chopped fine
3 Sauté spinach in a pan with 3 Tbsp of olive oil. Cover pan and
reduce heat to cook slowly.
7 Tbsp olive oil, divided
4 When half cooked, add a clove of finely chopped garlic, pine
nuts, and part of the salt. Sauté until spinach is tender.
1 teaspoon dried herbs
(dill, basil, oregano)
parsley to taste
salt to taste
5 Finely chop remaining cloves of garlic and parsley, and mix in
herbs. Set aside.
6 Heat remaining oil in another frying pan and add potatoes and
remaining salt.
7 Fry potatoes over low heat and cover, stirring occasionally.
8 When potatoes begin to brown, add garlic, parsley, and herb
mixture. Fry until potatoes are completely browned.
9 Serve hot, placing the potatoes around the spinach.

rowing up in a troubled home wasn’t easy, especially when I had to see Mom and Dad in continual
disagreements.
I was twelve the first time I ran away from home. It was
late at night, and I found myself running like crazy, desperately trying to leave the pain I felt behind me. Mom and
Dad had begun arguing in front of me. I cried and begged
them to stop fighting, but it went on until I couldn’t stand
it anymore.
I still remember that moment. All I wanted was to feel
safe and secure, but where could I go? Forty-five minutes
later I was at my best friend’s house. She had no idea what
had happened to me, or why was I crying. But she opened
the doors to her home, and opened her arms to me, offering
me comfort and compassion.
Many times I’ve tried to run
away without realizing it. Not too
long ago, after speaking to God as
I struggled to find some answers
to some pressing questions, He
opened up my memory as if it
were a movie, showing me that
first time—and all the other times
I’d run away. How many times I’d
Hold On To Me
As I looked back on that scene,
suddenly God impressed me with
a thought. You’re running away,
and doing the same thing your dad
did when he didn’t want to face his
problems. But you can change this
pattern if you decide. Just stay and
hold on to Me!
I wasn’t expecting that thought!
It was late at night, and I found myself

gave me his blessing. Then he left.
That day my mom, my little
brother Carlos, my sister Carolina,
my husband, and my mother-inlaw were all at my house. After
my father left, some of us began to
cry. The man I admired so much
had decided to leave my mother
and siblings for good because he
couldn’t fix his marriage.
Lord help me, I begged silently. I
need you. Please give me the strength
I need to not only accept my faults,
but also hold on to You, and never
let You go! And if I ever decide to
run away, may I run toward You
and Your open arms, where I can
be safe and secure!
Isaiah 30:19 (NIV) says, “How
gracious He will be when you cry
for help! As soon as He hears, He
will answer you.”
Are you trying to run away from
your problems? Today’s the day to
stop and face them. Don’t do it with
your own strength. Confront them
with God by your side! The Lord
will always receive us with open
arms!

HONORING

M
y wife and I visited our
daughter in Manhattan,
Kansas, when our grandson was five years old. While we
were there, I decided to build a
chain-link fence around the backyard, and after the posts were in
place, I began unrolling and stretching the fence.
At that point, my grandson,
Joshua, came out. Sorting out some
tools he liked, he took them to the
driveway and proceeded to play
with them diligently. At the end of
each day, when I put away my tools,
I had to look rather carefully to find
the ones he’d scattered around. But
I didn’t mind.
Finally, after the third day, I was
finished with the fence, and decided
to invite my wife and daughter to
see it (and, of course, approve it). As
they made a few comments, Joshua
announced proudly, “My grandpa
and I built that fence. I helped him
the whole time!”

prayer requests leave me feeling
rather overwhelmed. Each call is
by someone with a specific spiritual, physical, or financial need.
The caller and I stand together; as
prayer partners we petition divine
intervention.
One caller told me that her
daughter was just admitted to
Intensive Care with a kidney infection. Others have said, “I’m a poor
woman on welfare, and my children
are completely out of control,” or
“My friend just got out of prison.
Please pray he will find honest
friends and a good job.”
Honoring Their Faith
Seeking divine help is a time for
faith! James 5:15 says, “The prayer
of faith will save the sick, and the
Lord will raise him up. And if he
has committed sins, he will be
forgiven.”
When a Roman military officer
suggested that if Jesus would say
the word, his servant would be
healed, He replied, “Go your way;
and as you have believed, so let it

be done for you.” Matthew 8:13.
Jesus also made an encouraging
statement when He healed a paralytic man who had been carried on
a portable bed by four of his friends
to where Jesus was. But alas, the
home was too crowded, and they
couldn’t reach Him. So they carried
the crippled man up to the roof, and
removing part of it, lowered their
friend down to the Master!
Mark 2:5 says, “When Jesus saw
their faith, He said to the paralytic,
‘Son, your sins are forgiven you.’ ”
The inspired account recognizes the
faith of the paralytic’s four friends.
On the basis of their faith, Jesus
called him “son,” then announced
that his sins were forgiven!
The caller and I stand together; as prayer
partners, we petition divine intervention.
Jesus first recognized the faith of
the four friends who transported
the paralytic, and on that note, He
announced His own divinity by
forgiving sins and healing the man.
We have every reason to unite
our collective faith with our callers,
trusting God to act according to His
divine judgment.
Eyes of the Ancients

Blessed
Based on Genesis 30 and 31

Jacob quickly acquires a sizeable
flock! Laban now begins claiming
the speckled and spotted ones by
turns, but Jacob still prospers.
Finally, the Angel of God comes
to Jacob in a dream and explains
how recessive genes of off-color
characteristics are transmitted
through pure-color parents (lest he
boast of his cleverness). Only supernatural intervention has brought
about his prosperity.
Still Fearful

T
hrough a dream at Bethel,
God promises Jacob an
inheritance, prosperity, and
to bless all nations through him. He
also promises to bring him back to
Canaan after his exile in Syria with
his uncle, Laban.
Jacob’s labored 14 years to accumulate bride money for his wives,
Leah and Rachel. These dowries
are normally given to the women
at marriage in case their husband
dies, divorces, or abandons them.
However, Laban hasn’t fulfilled his
duty to his daughters—and he’s not
arranged to pay Jacob, either!
Reminding Laban that his
contract has ended, he asks to be

released. But God’s blessing on Jacob
has greatly enriched Laban, so he
asks him to stay and name his price.
Overconfidence and Greed
In a rash of self-confidence, Jacob
proposes an odd deal to keep all
the speckled and spotted sheep
and goats, and all the brown lambs.
Laban thinks this foolish, since the
goats were usually of solid color,
and the sheep generally white. He
quickly agrees, separates, and sends
the speckled and spotted ones away
to keep them from interbreeding.
Starting with only solid-color
animals, Jacob follows an ancient
superstition that offspring markings
can be affected by what mothers see
during the prenatal period. Taking
tree branches, he strips off some
bark to expose the white wood
and sets them before the mating
God now tells Jacob to return
home, and his wives agree, complaining that their father has sold
them, treated them as strangers, and
has spent their dowries. Still fearful,
Jacob puts his wives on camels and
steals away with his family and
flocks while Laban shears sheep.
Three days later, Laban discovers
this and is furious, but God warns
him in a dream to neither speak
good nor bad to Jacob. Overtaking
them, Laban accuses him of taking
away his daughters like captives, of
not allowing him to kiss his family, and of stealing his household
gods (typically small nude female
figures worshiped for protection
and fertility).
Not realizing that Rachel’s hidden the gods in the camel saddle
she’s sitting on, Jacob allows Laban
to search the tents, adding that
whoever stole them should be put
to death!
Laban searches Jacob’s tent,
then those of his wives and maids.
(Bedouin wives still have separate
tents today—to help keep the
peace!) Children of any age are
obliged to stand in the presence
of a parent, but Rachel refuses,
claiming she’s menstruating. This
excuse works, and Laban comes
up empty-handed.
God’s blessing on Jacob
has greatly enriched
Laban, so he asks him to
stay and name his price.
Now Jacob’s gorge rises! He
rails over the ill-treatment he’s
endured for 20 years, while never
taking advantage of his uncle,
enduring both heat and cold with
the flocks, and having his wages
changed ten times!
Put in his place, Laban prop os es a for mal covenant to
resolve their problem—a written
document, signed, sealed, and
concluded with a sacrifice and
communal meal. A stone pillar
and heap of stones will now serve
as a territorial marker to keep
them permanently apart. It will be
called Mizpah—a stern warning
that God will watch this boundary
