Centennial Mass and Reception
The parish celebrated its 100th anniversary on
November 3 with a celebration mass at noon
followed by a lunch reception in the hall. This
event was the culmination of a year-long
acknowledgement of the parish’s 100th
anniversary through a series of special events.
The November 3 celebration was a large
undertaking involving several ministries and a
large volunteer crew. The centennial mass was
concelebrated by Bishop McGrath, former
pastors Msgr. Joseph Milani and Fr. Robert
Hayes, current pastor Fr. Gregory Kimm, and former
and present parochial vicars. A combined choir
included members from multiple masses and was led
by Dan Morris. Lothar Bandermann played the organ.
There was a Knights of Columbus honor guard.
Chuck Haas provided Centennial holy cards (right).

New Centennial Gazebo in Rectory Rose Garden
Visitors from Cupertino’s sister city, Copertino, Italy
A striking gazebo was constructed in the rose garden in front of
the rectory. The gazebo project was initiated by volunteer rose
garden caretaker, Ron Palma. For several years, Ron has taken
on responsibility for the labor intensive tending of the rose
garden. The health of the roses and beauty of the blooms reflect
on his doting care, along with two helpers, Dick Schumacher
and Marilyn Throm.
Ron proposed
dressing up the rose
garden for the parish
centennial with the
addition of a gazebo.
He also wanted to
remove the palm
tree that created a
mess with inedible
dates and shaded the
sun-loving roses.
He proposed the
idea to Father Greg
who approved it.
Ron shopped for
gazebos and settled
on an Amish
Gazebo kit. With
help from Hernando
During the parish Feast Day celebration on September 22, we
were honored to host visitors from Cupertino’s sister city
Copertino, Italy. They were the guests of honor at the Feast Day
mass and reception. They returned the following Tuesday,
September 24, for a farewell ceremony hosted by our school.
This included an all-school assembly in the hall where children
sang the Italian and American national anthems, and presented a
puppet show on the life of St. Joseph of Copertino. The visitors
were Councilman Mauro Valentino, Sabino Forina, Azzura
Martina, Diletta Forina (daughter of Azzura and Sabino),
Federica Masella and Carlo Montefrancesco.
Apostolic Blessing from Pope Francis
Gomez, he built a foundation for the structure and then
assembled the gazebo. The foundation is a one foot pit filled
with 6” of crushed granite and topped with 12 foundation
blocks.
Ron embellished the plain
kit elements with turned
posts, decorated side
panels and a cross on the
roof. A handmade sign
was made by a sign
company Ron found at a
craft fair. The light fixture
from Restoration
Hardware contains an
Edison light bulb. A small table with two chairs invites one to
relax and enjoy the garden.
The project lasted from April to September, with Ron putting in
about 250 hours of work. Mike Ereno assisted with the roof.

Opening Introduction to Centennial Mass
By Fr. Greg Kimm
It’s taken 100 years of hard work, sacrifice, prayer, and faith but
here we are: Happy 100th birthday! Our parish was established
on November 4, 1913.
school. (Sr. Ignatius, RSHM, former principal, was also
present and introduced at the end of mass). Thank you to the
Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary.
Welcome to all of our special guests. We are so pleased that
Bishop McGrath is with us for our celebration. I’m going to take
some time now to introduce some of our other special guests.
And now for our former parochial vicars. Unfortunately, many
could not attend. Those here today:
First, you probably heard the bell ringing 100 times to
commemorate 100 years of St. Joseph of Cupertino Parish, and
some of you had the opportunity to ring it. This is the bell from
the original St. Joseph of Cupertino Church; like that church, the
bell dates to the year 1907, when we were still a mission of Santa
Clara University and not yet a parish. Here’s what happened to
the bell. Through the generosity of Mr. Vito Chiala, a parishioner
and local farmer, the old church was demolished in 1953 to make
room for the present church. At that time, Father Ryan, the
pastor, arranged with Mr. Chiala to store various parts of the old
church—pews, windows, etc.—in the Chiala barn. Over time,
some of these items were donated to other churches in the area.
Eventually, with the consent of Fr. Ryan, some parts of the old
church, such as the side doors, the entire sacristy, and the bell
were incorporated into the Chiala hardware store here in
Cupertino; some of you remember this store, named Bell
Hardware. Today, we are honored to have Vito’s sons and
daughters with us: George, Rick, Fran, Johnny, Rosemarie, and
Bill. Continuing the family tradition of generosity, they and the
other members of their family, now residents of Morgan Hill,
have returned the bell to St. Joseph of Cupertino in time for our
centennial celebration. We are very, very grateful to Mr. Vito
Chiala and to his family for preserving and protecting the bell for
the last 60 years and we want you to know that you will always
have a home here as well as in Morgan Hill.
• Fr. Larry Hendel
• Fr. Enzie Lagattuta
• Fr. Peter Luc Phan
• Fr. Chady Segovia
• Fr. Vincent Pineda
• And we must recognize our dear friend, Fr. Paul Soukup from
Santa Clara University, who helped us with masses and
confessions for many years and will always be part of our
parish family. He also represents a long line of Jesuit priests
who served here before we became a parish.
We are blessed that both of the living former pastors are with us:
• Msgr. Joseph Milani
• Fr. Robert Hayes
In the Easter edition of the Flyer, Fr. Greg’s Centennial mass
introduction will continue, with the introduction of long-time
parishioners who have been in the parish between 61 to 89 years.
Marianists Recall Their History at the Centennial of
St. Joseph of Cupertino Parish
All former staff people that we could remember and find were
invited to this celebration. We welcome back all of those were
able to join us today. Please stand as I mention your name:
• Caroline Thomas, former liturgy director
• Tracy Sevigny, former director of catechetical ministry
• Sr. Rosalie Pizzo, former pastoral associate
• Sr. Karen Pozniak, former pastoral associate, lives in Vermont
and could not make it to our celebration but she sent this note:
[Read]
• Sr. Joanne Logan, former pastoral associate. Sr. Joanne is here
also representing the Holy Family Sisters, who gave religious
instruction in the parish for 50 years, from 1926 to 1976.
That’s a lot of children who learned the Catholic faith from
these dedicated women over the years. Thank you to the
Sisters of the Holy Family.
• The Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary came to staff our
new school in 1956 and served here until 1984. We are thrilled
that two of the last sisters who were part of our school staff
came all the way up from Los Angeles to celebrate with us: Sr.
Mary Leah Plante and Sr. Mildred Inks. Sr. Mildred was
actually the last Religious of the Sacred Heart principal of our
The Marianists served in San Jose from 1898 to 1935 at the
Jesuit Parish of St. Joseph conducting the boy’s grade school and
including a high school later. In the summers, the Brothers made
their annual retreat at the Jesuits' Villa Maria, located in the
present city of Cupertino, not far from the present location of the
Marianist community.
The Marianists came full circle when, on this November 3, they
celebrated the 100th anniversary of St. Joseph of Cupertino Parish
which started as a mission at the same Villa Maria.
San Jose Bishop Patrick McGrath presided with Father Gregory
Kimm as main celebrant. Brothers David Betz and William Bolts
attended the Mass and gala reception. Both are involved in parish
ministries: David in the parish music ministry and Bill in adult
faith formation and other activities.
