Dear Membership,
We’re into May already, and we have really enjoyed some beautiful weather lately. This is a wonderful time of year in
Japan, before the June rains and July heat! I hope everyone
is enjoying the spring weather, and is able to take some time
to relax outdoors. May also marks the end of our YOSC social
year, which means it’s time to start planning the next one!

We had an amazing month in April! We kicked off last month
with the glamorous Thrift Shop Fashion Show held with our
sister organization, the YESC. Much to our surprise, the
attendees of a Far East Journalism Conference used the opportunity to interview and film of a few of the members. It
was a great show, and some bonus experience for those journalism students! Thank you to Andi Adams and her staff for
all their hard work making the fashion show a success, and
also to all of the models who participated!
Our other major April function was our Annual Scholarship
Dinner and award presentations. All our members should be
proud of their volunteer work throughout the year, as it
culminated in awarding $19,000 in scholarships to both high
school seniors and to spouses completing degrees! Those
funds were made possible by members volunteering at the
Thrift Shop, helping organize and run the Asian Bazaars, and
donating time and resources. The YOSC could not have done
this without your support, so thanks to everyone for your
kindness!
Speaking of the Asian Bazaar, our spring bazaar was just
last weekend on May 2 and 3. There were 52 awesome vendors and
lots of shoppers! Thank you to all of you that volunteered, donated food, or came out and browsed. We had a great weekend
overall, and as soon as the numbers are finalized we will be able
to announce the results.

Defense or any of its

governmental status.
Since the beginning of the YOSC fiscal year budget on October 1,
2014, we have been able to give almost $48,000 back to the Yokota
community! That is an outstanding number, and we’re not done
yet! The Governing Board approved two welfare requests in
April. The first request was for the Music and Movement Program
at the Library. We were able to give $500 to help with supplies
for the program, which benefits Yokota’s young children...

...The second request was for the Eighth Grade Dance to help offset the cost of their
DJ. We provided $150 towards their end of year dance, their last class social function before they head off to high school.
For our May event we are having a Fiesta night on May 14! There will be salsa dancing
lessons, delicious foods, and of course the great company of our membership. The
election for the Executive Board members for the 2015-2016 year will also take place
at this event, so please come out and participate!
Since this is the May Yokosan, this will be my final letter of the year and I would
just like to say what an honor and humbling experience it has been to serve as the
YOSC President these last few months. I would like to thank Jessica Bull for all her
hard work and dedication--Jessica, we wish you all the best! I would also like to
thank the entire YOSC Governing Board for all the time, energy and sacrifices they
have made for the organization. Most of all, I’d like to thank all members for making
our YOSC programs possible and uplifting our Yokota community. I truly appreciate all
of you and your selfless support in improving the lives of others. You are what makes
the YOSC great! God bless.
Warm regards,

EXECUTIVE BOARD NOMINEES
From the Nominating Committee, for the 2015-2016 YOSC Board
President:
1. Marisa Martin
My name is Marisa Martin. I have been an Air Force spouse for 12 years, 6 of those living at
Yokota Air Base. Before having my three wonderful children, Haley, William, and Rose, I taught
2nd and 3rd grade in Texas and South Carolina. I have been an active spouse in 5th AF, and
maintained leadership roles in the 374th OSS, and the 459th AS. My hobbies include, entertaining, decorating, and exploring new places in Tokyo for unique, affordable antiques.
2. Katie Hodgkins
Katie Hodgkins was elected as the YOSC First Vice-President for the 2014-2015 year and has been
serving as the President since January. Katie has been volunteering with the YOSC for nearly
three years since she arrived at Yokota in the summer of 2012. Katie was part of the Spring
2013 Bazaar Committee and has served on every Bazaar Committee since then in different capacities. Katie has also been part of the YOSC Board as the Scholarship Chair and helped support
all YOSC functions and events as the First Vice-President. Katie was also the YOSC Chair of
the Spouses’ Night Out Committee, a first-ever event for all Yokota spouses. In 2014 alone,
Katie donated over 500 hours to support the YOSC and YOSC-sponsored activities.
“I really love this organization, all the good work it does for the base community, and our
amazing spouses who put it all together year after year. It’s really special to see our members working together to run the Thrift Shop and put on huge events like the Asian Bazaars, all
of which raise funds for our wonderful scholarship and welfare programs. It’s very humbling to
be a part of. If elected as President for the 2015-2016 YOSC year, I would like to continue
building our membership, develop more team-building and fun events, further strengthen ties
with our sister organization the YESC, and conduct more community assistance and outreach efforts. Our members have a ton of great ideas in all these areas, and I look forward to working
with our dedicated and talented spouses to make things happen!”
Katie lived in many states as a child but claims Herndon, Virginia as her home. Katie received
her bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine from Waynesburg College, Pennsylvania and her master’s
degree in Sports Administration from Fort Hays State University, Kansas. Katie met her husband
Andy while working at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas; Andy is a full-time civil
service employee and an officer in the Air Force Reserve. Katie and Andy have a three-year old
son, Nolan, who only moves at one speed (full-on sprint) and already knows more Japanese words
then they do.

First Vice President: Ann Farrara
I was born and raised in Central Illinois then attended a University in Edwardsville, near St. Louis. I absolutely love all St. Louis sports teams. My husband and I have been stationed at Laughlin
AFB, Texas and Beale AFB, California leading to our assignment to Yokota AB, Japan. My Bachelor's
degree is in Nursing, however, my full time job at the moment is being a mother and volunteering. I
love philanthropy, sports, music, and socializing. Through college I volunteered over 2,000 hours
while working full time and being a full time student. I went on a mission trip to Africa volunteering as a nurse which opened my eyes to an entirely new side of health care needs and true poverty. Through organizations and employment I have a vast amount of experience in varying roles of
leadership, management, and support. I look forward to becoming more active in YOSC.
My husband, Mike, and I have been married four years. We have a two year old girl, Adriana, and a
five year old Australian Shepherd, Joker. Mike and I met in college through ROTC at SIUE. Adriana
is my perfect little spitfire who keeps my life entertaining. Our dream is to adopt a second child
and provide a family to someone who may not have had one otherwise or sponsor a college student in
the future.

was Incirlik AB, Turkey for two years. Jane has been at Yokota since July 2014, and is enjoying the
Japanese culture and traveling around the country.
Secretary: Lindsay Clinton
Lindsay Clinton joins the YOSC Executive Board for a third year as the Secretary. She gained previous OSC experience as the Publicity Chair and Corresponding Secretary while stationed at Little
Rock Air Force Base. Lindsay has been at Yokota AB for 2.5 years and has enjoyed volunteering as a

SSgt Gilchrist and Capt Sloane are the legal office tax representatives for Yokota
AB. Every year the Yokota Legal Office stands up a tax office for our local military
community. In 2014, we filed 779 returns, saving our community over $198,000 in preparation fees and bringing over $1.4 million back to our people in refunds. In order to
make the 2015 Tax Season successful, we need volunteers to help with the returns.
For
those who are interested, please feel free to contact [email protected], or
Capt Sloane at [email protected], or you may call at DSN 225-8069.
LIBRARY
The library is always accepting donations of appropriate material.
While they are unable to request financial donations, they remain in need of any financial support that can be given. Donations received allowed them to have a successful
summer reading program this year and they would like to continue offering such programs
to the community.
