Fundraising and
Supporter news
Over the past few months there has been a tremendous amount of
activity by supporters up and down the country
• A Big Walk
Sean and Cheryl Scott-Davidson organised a
sponsored walk in December followed by a
party. Around 30 people took part, walking
across the Forth Road Bridge, and many of
the men involved also grew moustaches.
Between these efforts they raised more
than £7000. We thank Scott and Cheryl
for raising this staggering amount and all
those who generously gave their time and
effort to be a part of this. This event has
helped raise awareness of prostate cancer
and disease and it is great to see so many
people getting involved!
and 14 minutes! In addition to running the
Loch Ness Marathon both John and Billy have
also kindly given up their time to volunteer
for Prostate Scotland, assisting us in our
information and awareness work at the 50+
Show in Glasgow. Thanks go to John Fulham
and Billy Mathieson for their support.
Gordon Gibb started 2014 by running the BUPA
Great Run in Edinburgh on the 11th of January.
We would like to give a big thank you to all
our runners who all do so much for us, giving
time and a lot of effort to support us in such a
physically demanding way.
• The Long Way Up
• Running
Tony Reid (pictured) raised more than £900 by
running the Blackrock ‘5’ Race on the 21st June
last year. The race is a demanding 5K run along
the beach near Kinghorn in Fife.
On 26th August 2013 Colin Watson, David
Rayson, Duncan Wilson, Lenny Allen, Mark
Gardiner and David Walden set out to cycle
from Land’s End to John O’Groats in memory of
their colleague Ian Kerr who had sadly passed
away. The team of staff from HMP Dumfries
sped their way through England and Scotland
and made the trip in 10 days, raising the mighty
sum of £5121. Congratulations go to the Blazing
Saddles Team for their cycling prowess and
sincere thanks for choosing Prostate Scotland
as their beneficiary charity.
• Burns Supper
Somewhat further north, Sidney Ratter
completed the Rousay Lap in Orkney on
the 31st August last year in aid of us.
We had several runners in the Great Scottish Run
on October 6th 2013. A big thank you to all our
runners including: Pamela Leggate, Morag Krievs,
Catherine Stewart, Lorraine Murphy, Carole
McGowan, Kelly Browne, Shannon Brown and
Anne Johnston who made up the Dumbarton
Road Surgery team and also to Steven Diffin.
Finally, well done to our runner who made it onto
the STV coverage of the finish line!
In September Billy Mathieson ran the Loch
Ness marathon and raised over £900 in aid of
Prostate Scotland. John Fulham also ran in aid
of us, reaching the finish in a fantastic 3 hours
Coatbridge Rotary Club raised £1000 through
their annual Burns Supper in 2013. The donation
was presented at the Club meeting and dinner in
June, at which Adam Gaines, Director of Prostate
Scotland, gave a presentation on prostate
cancer and disease. We would like to thank the
members and committee of the Rotary Club for
their wonderful donation and for their support
in our work to raise awareness. Particular thanks
go to Janet and John McGill and the Club
President, George Lindsay.
• Comrie Cancer Research Club
Comrie Cancer Research and Relief Club have
very kindly given £3000 from the proceeds of
their sales. This is their third donation in a year;
their continued generosity has been fantastic.
This is a significant help towards our research
work into future services and treatment needs
of men with prostate cancer.
• Football Crazy
Thanks go to James Baty and Craig Rudd who
held a charity football match at the Threave
Rovers Ground at Castle Douglas on the 25th
August. They had a super day and raised £1800
between them and James chose to donate
£900 to Prostate Scotland in memory of his
grandfather Bob Crosbie who sadly passed away
earlier in the year. Prostate Scotland extends its
condolences to the family on their loss.
In early October a testimonial football match
was held in Whitburn in honour of Charlie
Dyet. Charlie has long been involved with
grassroots football in Whitburn as both a
player and a coach and many of his past
players and teammates turned out in support.
In November a mini auction and raffle was also
held in his honour. Together over £1000 was
raised! We thank Charlie and wish him the best
in his treatment. Additional thanks go to John
Murphy for the support he has given in helping
with these events.
• Singing in Harmony
The Rolling Hills Barbershop Chorus in
Edinburgh has traditionally raised money
for a charity of its choice at its Christmas
performances. For Christmas 2013 the Chorus
chose to donate the money they raised to
Prostate Scotland. Several members of the
Chorus have direct and indirect experience of
prostate illnesses.
The Chorus undertook numerous singing
events in December 2013 in locations as varied
as Valvona & Crolla, Tesco, Krispy Kreme
Donuts and Dobbies Garden Centres. A total of
£625 was raised by the Chorus at these events
on behalf of Prostate Scotland to help raise
awareness and to contribute to the funding of
treatment facilities for men in Scotland.
The Chorus selected Prostate Scotland as
their annual partner charity for 2014 following
the talk about
prostate cancer
by Adam Gaines
in January 2014.
Prostate Scotland is a charity registered in Scotland (SC037494) with its registered office at Princes Exchange, 1 Earl Grey Street, Edinburgh EH3 9EE.

annual dinner in early October. We would like
to thank members of the Branch and their
Chairman Kevin Hamilton for their generosity
and for so kindly nominating Prostate
Scotland as their 2013 nominated charity.
• Happy Birthday!
Several supporters have very generously
recently held birthday parties in aid of us, or
asked for donations to us in lieu of presents
- together raising well over £2000. Thank
you and our best wishes for a very happy
birthday go to Ernest Lamond (pictured),
Kenneth MacKay, and Denny Mackenzie!

and raffle evening last Autumn at the St
Columba Club in Barrhead in aid of us. Over
the course of the evening more than £1600
was raised.
• Snow Ball
The Snowball
in Dundee this
year was held in
aid of Prostate

£8,000 for the charities. Thanks go to Ali
McCallum, Jill Orr, Marilyn Johnstone, Kate
Nicol, Rhona Hay and Tracy Smillie for their
amazing fundraising and organisational skills,
making it a really special evening.

Debz Willis, Tom O’Malley, Sarah Logie and
Kim Robertson (or Team Stag) began their
new year with a splash in the Forth. The
team raised £425 (121% of their original

• Calendar Gents
A special calendar was
created featuring photos
of 12 friends who have
known each other for
over thirty years, reprising
a calendar that they had
done 30 years before.
Copies of the calendar were sold to raise
funds in aid of Prostate Scotland, raising the
princely sum of £1,200. Special thanks to all
involved in the wonderful project including
the 12 gents, Robyn Glynne Percy who
produced the calendar, Deirdre Kornyold
–Strickland, who directed it and last but not
least Drew Parnell who took the photos.
• The Arizona Lang Drap
pair travelled from Scotland and while
parachuting from the plane managed to get
the above snap! Thank you Andrew and
Kirsty for raising such a great amount of
money and increasing awareness in such an
eye catching way! Thanks also go to Alan
Milne, who has provided untiring support
and inspiration in their cause.
• The Big Quiz
March saw the fourth Big Quiz in Galashiels,
organised by Lucy
McAneny and
Lucille Paterson,
with a huge
turnout of over
200 people. Once
again the event was an enormous success
with quiz rounds, paper aeroplane designing
and flying, raffle, auction and a prize for the
best team name. The most amazing amount
of over £4,000 was raised. The Big Quiz
is organised in memory of Duncan ‘Dunc’
Paterson, former SRU Chief and manager
of the Scottish rugby team and a great
supporter of Prostate Scotland.
• Walking between the Bridges
Tom Davidson, the Provincial Grand Master
of the Lanarkshire Middle Ward completed
an amazing long distance walk in early May
2014 to raise both funds and awareness of
the work of Prostate Scotland in providing
information and support for men with
Prostate Cancer and other prostate problems
throughout Scotland. The walk was from
South Queensferry and after crossing the
Forth Road Bridge the route followed the
Fife Coastal Path all the way around Fife to
the Tay Road Bridge and into Dundee. The
complete route was about 135 kilometres or 85
miles in total and took five days to complete.
Progress of the walk can be viewed online
at www.facebook.com/TomDavidsonTrek.
Tom has also set up a JustGiving page where
people can donate www.justgiving.com/
TomDavidsonTrek At the time of going to
press Tom had raised over £3,000.
