I’m sorry to have to remind you, but it’s almost that time of year again:
vacations are winding down. Schools are starting back up this month. And
our church programming will soon be in top gear. You know all of this
already.
But did you know that the next few weeks are also the most common time
for people to search for a new church home? As any professional mover can
affirm, July is the peak of moving season. And after folks have had a few
weeks to settle into their new home, they are ready to visit a few of their
neighborhood churches. Are we ready to receive them? I would like to
prayerfully offer a few suggestions on how we might welcome our new
neighbors into our church:
1) Be early to worship- If you arrive five minutes after the start of the
service, you will have lost valuable time to speak with visitors. Church
visitors almost always arrive early because walking into an unfamiliar
church is stressful enough even without being late.
2) Keep your eyes open for new people and be willing to make the first
move- I know this is scary. It’s scary for me too. But there is literally no
downside to starting a conversation with a new person. You might even get
to know someone who has been worshipping in the other side of the
sanctuary for years!
3) Be hospitable- Help someone find a Sunday School classroom, restroom,
handicap accessible entrance, etc. This building is a bit confusing. If you see
someone looking lost, they are probably new to our church. While we’re on
hospitality, I’ll go ahead and stomp on some toes. No seat in this church
belongs to you or your family. This whole church belongs to God! Should
you find someone sitting in “your seat,” simply smile, say “I’m so glad
you’re with us today,” and ask if you can sit next to them. If I find out that
you have said to a visitor, “You’re in my seat,” I WILL HUNT YOU
DOWN!!! If you need a particular seat, try tip #1. You will be much more
likely to find “your seat” open, and now you will even have a new friend to
sit with in worship, and everybody wins.
Grace and peace to you in Jesus,
Pastor Stephen Dunn

“AWAY DAY” Tuesday ~ AUGUST 2 ~ 10:00AM
At our last gathering, the Away Day Group visited the
Simply Natural Creamery and enjoyed their delicious ice
cream. Everyone had a fun time, except maybe one who
had a flat tire. The guys in our group came to her aid
and got her on the way.
Our next meeting will be August 2 at 10:00am. We
will view a movie, The Grace Card, “…a solid, sincere affirmation of faith and forgiveness.” (Steve Pearsall. St.
Petersburg Times).
The movie is about a police officer who loses his son in an accident which makes him bitter and angry with God and
everyone else. Can he and his partner get pass their differences and join forces to help one another? Every day, we have
the opportunity to rebuild relationships and heal deep wounds by extending and receiving God's grace, and never
underestimate the power of God's love. We will also be discussing actives for the coming months. Join us for a great
movie; bring your favorite snack to share, and a friend.
FARMVILLE CANCER CARE GATHERING - August 2 AT 6:30PM
Patient & Caregivers Support Groups at 7:15pm
Our next gathering will be August 2 at 6:30pm. Again we will share stories and memories, ring our bell and give
someone a Blanket of Hope. Following the gathering at 7:15pm you may attend the patient & caregiver support
groups. This is for any one affected by cancer, patient, caregiver and family. This is open to any one that would like
to attend.
AGAPE CHRISTMAS BOXES FOR ARMENIA
It is time once again to begin filling Christmas boxes for Armenia. For several years, the NC
Conference has adopted Project AGAPE Christmas boxes as a conference-wide mission
project. Please join us in 2016, as we fill plastic gift boxes with expressions of Christ’s love to
send to the children of Armenia.
Project Agape began in 1993 as a collaborate effort of the NC & Western NC Conferences and the Armenian Apostolic
Church to provide religious humanitarian assistance. As in past years, we request you follow the Agape Christmas
Packing List. (on the information desk) You do not need to include every item on the list and are free to add other ageappropriate items. You can make your gift box personal by adding a note/card, a picture of you/family or a picture
of a group in the church. You are also asked to include a $5 (check or cash) to help cover the cost of shipping. (See the
instruction sheet for more details.) Please bring your filled boxes to the church on or before Sunday, October 2.
Drop off date at the center in Goldsboro is October 17. If you have questions, please contact Rev. Bill Haddock,
Conference Mission Interpreter at 910-262-3831 or [email protected].
STOP HUNGER NOW! ~ October 9th ~ 2pm
Stop Hunger Now gets food and life-saving aid to the world’s most vulnerable people, and works to end
global hunger in our lifetime. FUMC plans to package 10,152 meals on the afternoon of October
9th. Each meal costs $0.29. Presently we need to raise an additional $1,494.08 to cover the costs of
the meals. Please plan to attend this fun event to help package meals and please consider donating to
this worthy cause! See Nan for more information.
WEDNESAY NIGHT FEFLLOWSHIP MEALS – Sept. 7 – 6:00pm
Bring on Fall! It's almost time for our fellowship meals to begin; the first one will be on
September 7 @ 6:00. We are needing some more groups or individuals who would like to
cook/serve/clean up on Wednesday nights. It would be a great opportunity if there is a mission
project that is close to your heart and need to raise some money. If you are not in a group (Women, Men, Youth, New
Beginning SS Class) you can still sign up to help. I will be making a schedule in the next couple of weeks!
"So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the
household of faith". Galatians 6:10.

FUMC’S Mid-Year Financial
Update
The UMMen’s Supper meeting,
Monday, August 8 at 7:00pm
All men are invited. Come join us
for good food and great fellowship.
Our mid-year financial statement
ending June 30th reveals that we
are short meeting our financial
obligations at this time. A variety of reasons can explain
the shortfall; however, we are still short. We really do
understand that times are challenging, and ask you to
continue praying about our church’s financial situation
and strive to fulfill your commitment to the Lord and help
as much as possible. We thank you for your
commitment to our Lord and His Church at FUMC and
would also ask that you be in prayer for a successful
upcoming Stewardship Campaign …God bless! - Finance
Committee.
YOUTH NEWS
What a great summer we have had at
MYF! Lots of fun outdoor activities,
which include water balloon dodge ball,
kickball with the Baptist Church, and a
trip to the water park. We will be attending "Worship
Under the Son" at Friendship Church on July 31st thru
August 4th. We will be having a pool party for all rising
6th thru 12th graders at the home of the Benfield's on
August 14th. Following that, on August 29th at 6, we will
have our Parent/Youth meeting to discuss our plans for
the upcoming fall. I hope everyone has had a wonderful
summer!
HELP OUR CHURCH
GROW!!
Electronic Giving is a
convenient, consistent way to
help our church grow.
Consider scheduling a recurring electronic contribution
today. It’s easy! You will no longer need to write out
checks and prepare envelopes every week. Even when
travel, illness or other circumstances prevent you from
attending services, your electronic contributions will
continue to be received on an uninterrupted basis.
Get started today! Ask for an authorization form in the
church office. Or visit our church website.
COMMUNITY MEN’S
STUDY GROUP
CONTINUES!
Please make the time to
come and bring a friend.
Bring your Bible. I look forward to seeing all of you
Tuesday night at 7:00 at Farmville United Methodist
Church, in the Church Parlor. God Bless, Todd
1st ANNUAL FAITH AND FAMILY
DAY AT DOWDY-FICKLEN
STATIUM
Our goal is to have guests experience the love of Christ
through us and to have them desire to return for worship
again. We need your help! We would like to compile a
list of members from both services, who would be willing
to make contact with guest after they visit us. We hope
to match guest with FUMC member of similar interest,
ages, same age children, and other common links.
The FUMC members would figuratively “adopt” the
guest, informing them of any programs and opportunities
offered by our church, such as Sunday School, choir,
UMM, UMW, Youth, etc. We will also need someone to
look out for first time guests at each service. We have
welcoming bags for them to take home. The bags have
information about our church and its many activities. in
the near future, we are planning to make a smaller bag
for children. If you have any suggestions as to what we
could put in the children’s bags, please let us know.
Maybe the kids in the Sunday school classes can draw a
picture, or write a note inviting them to Sunday School
and church.
If you would be willing to help our church in this very
important ministry or have any questions or suggestions,
please call the church office. There are copies of
suggested guidelines on the information desk. We hope
you will prayerfully consider how you can help all who
enter FUMC experience God’s love. Please contact the
church office if you are interested.
All church members, congregations,
youth group as well as their family and friends, Saturday,
September 3rd at 6:00pm. ECU vs. Western Carolina.

FUMC Men’s
“NEED A HAND?” Project.
Do you need a hand doing simple
repairs around your home? Putting
batteries in smoke detectors, or your toilet leaks, an
outlet is broken, or your window is cracked and needs to
be replaced? If you need a hand, call me at 520-8227547 or send me an email [email protected] and I
will contact a skilled worker to assess and assist. The
help is free, we only ask you pay for the parts. This is
not for emergencies.
We are looking for volunteers to help do the repairs; you
don’t have to be male. Anyone is welcome to help us
help each other. Call or email me. PEACE! Robert
