~Reading Camp: July 14-18, 2014~
Theme: "Amazing Animals"
Excitement builds as we move closer to the date of our 6th Annual Summer Reading Camp for 2nd-4th graders who lag behind their
grade level in reading. We, who enjoy reading so much, hope to build more enthusiastic readers among the campers as we give
them a fun week of diverse enrichment experiences, traditional camp activities, and intense reading skill building.
The 2014 Reading Camp committee has lined up a wonderful week of “Amazing Animals” trips and activities for Reading Camp.
The 26 campers will be visiting Project Hope, Four Rivers Sport Horse Center, the Nature Center at LBL, Noble Park for fishing,
and on Friday we will be “amazed” by “Animal Tales” animals from Mayfield!
One of the most appreciated aspects of camp is always the gift bag that goes home with each camper on Friday afternoon. Most of
our campers come from families with very limited financial resources, so we believe it is important to help them be as prepared as
possible for a successful beginning to the school year. In addition to 3-5 new books and any crafts or creative writing produced
during the week, each camper receives all the school supplies needed for his or her grade. Each school has its own list of supplies,
so shopping for these supplies and then sorting them into the bags is quite a task. It is also one of the largest expenses of Reading
Camp.
If you would like to share in the “amazement,” sign-up to volunteer on the sign-up sheet in Fletcher Hall,
or read below to see how you can help in other ways!
Thank you!
Reading Camp Committee
Do you want to help with Reading Camp but you are not be able to volunteer that week?
Donate toward the school supply bags!
$50 will cover one camper’s supplies and books. We will have 26 campers.
If you can furnish money for one bag of supplies and books, that would be wonderful.
If you can do more, we will be grateful.
If you can give enough for part of a bag, that too will be much appreciated.
Make your check out to Grace Episcopal Church and mark it for Reading Camp Supplies.
Drop your donation by the church office, mail it to Grace Church,
or put it in the offering plate on Sundays between now and July 14.
Our Food Coordinator, Sid Hancock, is also asking for donations of cookies!
Please bring your donations and drop them off in the kitchen.
PLEASE NOTE: One of the children is ALLERGIC TO PEANUTS, so please look for cookies that are Peanut Free.
You can also make a monetary donation for snacks! Make your check to Grace Church and mark it for “Reading
Camp Snacks” on the memo line. Drop your donation by the church office, mail it to Grace Church, or
Put it in the offering plate on Sundays between now and July 14.

A Note from Meghan: Maternity Leave
As I'm sure many of you already know, I am out on maternity leave…
a few weeks earlier than expected. Kenna Rose Holland was born on
May 23rd - rather than her July 4th due date! Because Kenna had to
spend some time in the NICU at Baptist, I delayed the start date of
my maternity leave. I spent the first week after the birth in the hospital,
recovering from my cesarean and from HELLP Syndrome. I decided
to use some vacation time, but I tried to do some work from the
hospital. I wrote a couple of sermons and collaborated with Libby, as
it was her last days in the office. The next week I was released and
Kenna was still in the NICU. I decided to go back to work. Grace was
closer to the hospital than home, plus it would give me a chance to
wrap up all the loose ends I had intended to wrap up before I started
maternity leave. The week Kenna spent in the hospital was busy for
both of us. She was being weaned off the incubator and the feeding
tube and gradually gaining weight. Tyler and I were working and
running back and forth to the hospital! On Saturday, June 7th, Kenna
came home. And on Sunday, June 8th, she had her first babysitter! I
had committed to celebrating Pentecost at St. Peter's. Don't worry she was only without a parent for about 45 minutes and Tyler's mother
LOVED having the time with her. Pentecost Sunday was my official
last day of work and maternity leave began that Monday. Since then,
I've been enjoying motherhood! Tyler and I are so thankful for all the
love, support, and FOOD that the Grace Church community has
provided! While Kenna's arrival was unexpected, we couldn't be
happier!

Acolyte News .....old, new, and special
For Kids and Parents/Grandparents to read...
Old-- there is a summer guessing contest in the vesting
room. Check it out!
New--RECRUITMENT TIME
Children aged 9 and older are invited to join our acolyte
program, however, we are flexible on the age in some
cases. We need YOU! Every spring we lose some
folks when they graduate. Acolytes are trained to assist
the clergy at the altar. You might call it "doing by
serving," or "serving by doing." If you are interested,
please see me after church any Sunday in July. You
may sit with me and watch what the acolytes do and
decide whether being an acolyte is right for you. I'll
be sitting in the choir pews, or you can find me in the
vesting room after church. You must be baptized to be
an acolyte. Children under the age of 9 may sign up
on the acolyte board to help put out the floor torches
at the end of the service.
Special news: Ribbon Sunday is August 24. New
acolytes and returning acolytes will all receive ribbons
that correspond to their years of service. There will be
a Vergers’ Breakfast in our honor at 8:30 AM,
everyone will wear a robe in church, and we will take
a group picture We are really hoping that our Assistant
Rector, Meghan Holland, will be there to lead us! She
was an acolyte and this is a very meaningful service
for her too.

Former Grace Member Inducted into NCAA Hall of
Fame!
On June 18th, Susan Bradley (Cox) was inducted into the NCAA Hall of
Fame after having participated in over 40 triathalons world wide, winning
many of them. She was a graduate of Tilghman Hich School and the
University of Kentucky, where she later served as a swimming coach.
Here at Grace Church, Susan sang in an eight-voice girls choir. She and Judy
Bray were confimed in their chior vestments in 1949 by Bishop Clingman.
The NCAA ceremony was held in Louisville, KY.

Note from the Libby & Jim:
Summer Supply Clergy Scheduled
We have booked the entire summer with a combination of
“supply” clergy, along with a couple of Sundays being led
by Mother Meg or Deacon Richard.
Visiting us this summer will be Pastor Karen Husby (St.
Matthew Lutheran), Rev. Bill Brosend (Sewanee Faculty),
Rev. Mark Linder (our rector search consultant), and Rev.
Heather Blewett (Christ Church, Bowling Green). What an
exciting opportunity to hear a variety of preaching voices
this summer! Please be present as often as you can!
The Wades send greetings from their new home:
1110 Fairview St., Lee, MA 01238 (e-mail & cell
phone numbers have not changed).
–We are updating the church directory. If you have any
changes to make to your information, please email them to
the church office, or write them on a slip of paper and drop
them in the bowl on Kimberly’s desk.
–While the church office hours will not be changing for the
summer, please be aware that the office staff may leave at
4 PM on particularly quiet days. Please call ahead to make
sure that we are here or to let us know you are coming, so
that we do not leave early.
–In an effort to be more energy conscience, during the week
we will not be turning on lights in the church (obvious
exceptions will be church services and meetings), Fletcher
Hall, or other un-used areas. If you turn on lights, please
remember to turn them out.
Since the dining table inside is covered with stuff we're
unpacking, this screen porch is where we most often eat and relax.
It's cool and the view is wonderful; however, we haven't had much
time to just sit. While I thought we had given away, thrown away,
and already moved quite a few things, there are still a great many
boxes left. Of course, it's fun fitting our furniture and belongings
into this new environment. We are looking forward to a long
weekend in New Jersey with our granddaughter and the whole
family will gather here for Fourth of July. We certainly miss
Grace Church and Paducah and lift up the congregation in prayer
each day.
Libby+
–A friendly reminder from the bookkeeper: Just because we
might go on a summer vacation, the work of our church does
not. Please try to keep your stewardship pledges current
through the summer months.

Garden Help Needed!
Do you like to work outside? Do you like painting and re-finishing furniture?
Our Sexton, Blaine, is asking for a couple of volunteers to help scrub down
and paint/stain the wood garden benches in the Memorial Garden, and any
others we might have. If you would be willing to help with this project,
contact the church office of talk to Blaine on Sunday!
Also, if you like gardening, Blaine could probably use extra hands around
the grounds for weeding and tidying the garden beds! Talk to Blaine about
times to help!
Altar flowers are a wonderful way to memorialize
the passing of a loved one, to remember a special
event, anniversary or birthday, or to simply
express thanksgivings for the many blessings of
life.
To donate flowers, fill out a form located on Trish
Hines’ desk or in the box outside the Acolyte
Room and sign your name on the Flower Chart
next to your chosen date. Cost of each flower

Faith In Film
Season 7!
Maiden Alley Cinema presents
“Unbreakable”
on July 14 @ 6:30 PM
(Hosted by 1st Presbyterian & Etcetera Coffeehouse )
David Dunn's marriage is crumbling, and he's thinking of moving to New York. Then
when he's coming home from a job interview, his train derails and he is the only
survivor. More than that, he doesn't have a scratch on him. David is contacted by Elijah
Price, who runs a comic book art gallery and suffers from a genetic condition that makes
his bones very easy to break. Elijah has been a comic book fan all his life, and has
developed a theory that they are what remains of an ancient system of storytelling, and
the superheroes they are about are based on real people. Elijah believes David may be
one of these people. He has hardly ever been injured or sick, and he has tremendous
strength, plus an uncanny ability to tell if someone is about to or has done something
bad. David doesn't know what to think about the theory, or Elijah himself. However,
events soon conspire to convince him he may be a superhero after all.
Rated PG-13 for mature thematic elements including some disturbing violent
content, and for a crude sexual reference
