Notes from Leslie...
May was busy as usual with Mother’s Day, field trips for school
children, graduation celebrations, state sports tournament activities,
final days of school (happy students & teachers!) and the Memorial Day
holiday…whew, made me tired just writing all of that down! Now we look
forward to all that summer has to offer and I would guess it won’t slow down
much for most people.
The May showing of “The Jungle Book” was attended by 101
members. Disney did not disappoint us with their creativity and excellence
in presenting Rudyard Kipling’s classic in a new digitally enhanced format.

It was truly a spectacular movie. Lisa Anderson made a “guest” appearance

to help out at the afternoon movie as Becky had another work commitment.

There were no $Moneybags$ winners again in May, so the prizes will be $30 each for morning and afternoon at our next
movie day on Wednesday, June 8th. Movies are shown at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Blair 3 Theatres. Please join us!
We had a great time on the Fiesta San Antonio trip, even after sitting through the 5 hour (yes-5-really!) Battle
of the Flowers Parade under a warm Texas sun! Needless to say,
the ice cream shop behind our bleachers was extremely busy. We
lucked out with the weather AGAIN! Our bus driver and tour escort,
Paul and Elaine DeJong (husband & wife team), took very good care
of us along the way. It’s hard to summarize 9 days of activities, but
this Texas experience was very enjoyable. Our San Antonio hotel,
located on the River Walk, was an older art deco style (former bank)
building with beautiful stained glass windows, a grand two story
open lobby and spectacular views from the rooftop pool area. We
visited the San Jose Mission and church which is the best known
of the Texas missions, founded in 1720, in addition to the famous
Alamo with its beautiful gardens. Another popular stop included a
factory tour of SAS (San Antonio Shoes) that resulted in storing a
large number of shoe boxes on the motor coach! Fort Worth was
a very welcoming place with a true Texas feel, including the daily
cattle drive, a tour of the livestock exchange building and Billy Bob’s
Fiesta San Antonio Travelers
world famous honkeytonk (with an indoor rodeo arena). Visiting the
Oklahoma memorial on the way home was a very humbling experience. They have a remarkable outdoor memorial that
provides a sense of peace for those stopping by to pay their respects. The trip provided an opportunity to meet new
people, renew old friendships among members and create some lasting memories!
Our evening of entertainment by “Under The Streetlamp” at the Holland Center was spectacular! There was
a lot of clapping and toe tapping going on in the audience as this very talented quartet performed a variety of favorite
melodies from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. As was mentioned during their show, this was a time when you could listen to your
favorite songs and actually understand the lyrics! Such a true statement when compared to some of the music we hear
today. It was a delightful evening for all of us.
A group of 28 will be visiting the Pawnee City area for our “Amish Lifestyle And More” one-day trip on Wednesday,
June 15th. We’ll tell you more about our day in a future newsletter!
We now have 25 people signed up for the October “Let Freedom Ring” tour that will take us to Boston, Cape
Cod, New York City and Philadelphia. Additional space(s) may still be available on this tour so please call me as soon as
possible at 402-533-0103 if you would like me to check on this.
NEW ONE-DAY EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: I just recently purchased 36 tickets to a November 15th evening
performance of Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” at the Orpheum Theatre. I have not worked out all of the details with
regard to pricing, so watch a future newsletter for that information. If you want to make a reservation, please give me a
call and I will add your name to the list. This should be a great kick off to the holiday season!
June is the month that we set aside that special day of celebration just for the men…Happy Father’s Day to each
and every one of you that shares this wonderful honor!
