Today’s Gospel of the Good Samaritan
can be looked at in many ways. It provides
us with a challenge because it is so well
known. Let me suggest that it is a Gospel
about freedom, a person free enough ‘to be
moved with compassion,’ free enough to
respond to a person in need.
We know the story so well, three people
pass by the person on the side of the road
and one responds with mercy. In a way, the priest and the Levite responded correctly as they were observing the requirements of the law. Why? If one were to have contact with a
person beaten and half dead, they would become ritually unclean. They would be unable to serve in the Temple. But the
Samaritan comes by and sees something the first two do not,
he sees a person in dire need. “He approached the victim,
poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them.
Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to the inn,
and cared for him.” The point of the story? Who was the
neighbor to the robbers’ victim? “The one who treated him
with mercy, Go and do likewise.” The priest and Levite
missed something which the Samaritan saw, namely, there was
a person in need on the side of the road, a person needing help.
I suggested earlier that this was a Gospel about freedom. The
Samaritan was free enough to respond to this person on the
side of the road in the most appropriate way, with mercy/
compassion. The priest and Levite were not free, they were
bound to a literal understanding of the law. At the beginning
of this Gospel, Jesus points this out. What is required to inherit
eternal life? What is the law really about? Jesus affirms the
answer of the scholar of the law, love of God and neighbor.
This answer is at the heart of the Jewish law and the Christian
law. As Jesus says, “do this and you will live.”
How free are we to do something for the needy person on the
side of the road? What are we bound to that makes us less
free? We might think about this. Jesus also teaches us who the
neighbor is, the nice person, and more challengingly, the person on the side of the road.
Summer Blessings, Fr. Sheridan

Speaking of Liturgy
Liturgical Law
We are careful to pay attention to liturgical
laws, but we must be equally careful that our liturgies
unfold as prayer and worship, as making present the
paschal mystery, as celebrations of God’s word and

WORD: Holy Listening
Each week we gather to relax and listen to a short passage from scripture, reflect on God’s word, respond in
prayer, and rest in God’s presence. The scripture passages are taken from the Sunday Gospel to support our
journey. This ancient but simple process allows God’s
word to touch us in our daily lives and transform our
hearts.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL can use some Volunteers!
We have been active for years in assisting at 'St. Stans’, Saint Stanislaus Kostka, the dome-shaped
imposing structure at Kennedy & Division street in Chicago. There is an old-fashioned ‘soup kitchen’ staffed by Volunteers from
Parishes all over our Archdiocese, who tirelessly serve food to the destitute & needy in our society.
Our SVDP Wilmette Conference sends two Volunteers every Friday in this Christian effort to indeed ‘serve the poor
and the needy’, and additional Volunteers would be helpful. Make no mistake: this is ‘glamorous work’!!
Helping prepare feeding utensils starting at 10:30 AM, then either washing dishes, sweeping the floors, cleaning up,
etc. after the one hour feeding, which starts at Noon. We normally are finished around 1:30 PM
Anyone interested in helping in this worthwhile effort in serving the truly needy in our society, please call the Parish
Office and leave word on our SVDP ‘hot line’ and we will return a call shortly with additional details.
Catholic Charities Advocacy Message
State Budget Update
July 1, 2016
As everyone is likely aware at this point, yesterday the Illinois General Assembly passed a stopgap 18
month budget, and the Governor signed it. The bill provides funding for FY16 and for half of FY17.
These actions offer short-term relief to Human Services providers, and other areas of the State, but we face a
much tougher challenge in January. Catholic Charities still asks that you advocate for a full budget, and a
return to safety and the stability of the Human Services structure in Illinois.
The good news:
· Human Services providers will start seeing payment on the contracts they hold for FY16, and can expect
payment on the services they provide in the first half of FY17.
A Twelve Step Program for Those Seeking Emotional Health

Important information regarding communion visits and pastoral care of the sick for the homebound and hospitalized. Please
read carefully.
Your spiritual needs are very important to the staff at St. Francis.
To insure that you received the desired spiritual care if you are
hospitalized or homebound with illness, please assist us by providing us with the following.
Hospital:
If you would like anointing prior to a scheduled surgery,
please call the parish office to schedule an anointing with a priest.
You may also receive anointing at the hospital when there is an
emergency.
When you are admitted to the hospital it is critical that
you or a loved one identifies your religious affiliation, your parish
name and your desire for pastoral care and communion visits.
The patient may also call the Ministry of Care line to request communion at the hospital. A minister of care will make
sure the hospital is informed of this request.
Homebound:
Trained ministers of Care are available to bring communion to our parish sick and homebound. Ministers also visit local
assisted living and nursing care homes. To schedule a visit, please
call the Ministry of Care line at: 847 256-2273 press 0 and a Minister of Care will return your call.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is dedicated to helping the
poor and others who have come upon difficult times. As Vincentians, we serve those in need through one-on-one counseling, as
well as providing financial and other help to those who have fallen
on hard times. If you or someone you know wishes to meet with
us, please contact the parish office at 847-256-4250 and ask for
extension 44 and leave a short message. We will respond as soon
as possible. All inquiries will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
