Danny Fuller, Kauai, winner HIC Pro
The final day of the HIC Pro had an exciting finish
that saw a long overdue win for Kauai’s Danny Fuller.
This was the first win for him at Sunset in 15 years. Fuller,
32, was the only backsider in the all Hawaiian final and
his precise attack on the tricky sometimes closing out
Sunset battle ground earned him the victory and a spot in
the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Fuller won
$15,000.00 for his efforts and was very emotional at the
awards. “My Mom has sacrificed so much for me along
the way, so to dedicate this win to her means so much,”
Fuller said. Fuller has only surfed in the three events of
the Vans Triple Crown once and and was injured right
before it. “I suffered a back injury. It’s Hawaii. Dreams
are made and broken.” He said. This was an inspiring
win, a win for him that proved that if he surfed his best
he would do well.

The North Shore real estate market made a u-turn
last year around mid-June and is now at least half way
through a strong “UP” market.
If it follows most of our previous “UP” markets,
we can expect a total of about 2 years of strength
before the next real estate slow-down.
The latest Honolulu Board of Realtors monthly
statistical report shows the North Shore “Median
Sales Price” to be at $810,000, a 43% increase from
the same time last year.
Interest rates remain at historic lows and the inventory of available homes and condos are at lows,
therefore, in my opinion, we will see our prices continue to go up all the way through June of next year.

City Council commemorated the event with an exchange of official gifts. Knowing of the importance
of surfing to the people of Chigasaki, I choose to
present the delegation with a one-of-a-kind surfboard, designed especially for the event by Randy
Rarick. Triple Crown executive Marty Thomas, who
also helped to make it possible, was on hand to participate in the formal gift exchange.
Sadly, the momentous and celebratory event
was marred by the tragic drowning death of Chigasaki Vice Mayor Takehiko Kimura in Waikiki on
October 25. His immeasurable contribution to the
establishment of the Sister City Relationship will be
part of his legacy and fondly remembered by the
people of Honolulu and Chigasaki.
Honolulu’s Newest Sister City
Chigasaki is a seaside resort community for the
metropolitan Tokyo and Yokohama areas of Japan.
Located on the Pacific coast on the main island of
Honshu, Chigasaki is considered the birthplace of
surfing in Japan. Chigasaki is also regarded as the
center of Japanese Hawaiian culture with many
tropical and Hawaiian stores. Tourism is an important component of its economy and Chigasaki has
labored to build its reputation as the center of Hawaiian culture in Japan. For example, Chigasaki is
home to the World Invitational Hula Festival, with
the top dance group earning a trip to compete in
Hawaii. The city boasts more than 100 hula dance
groups with membership surpassing 1,000. There
are more than 30 surfboard shops and a number of
businesses manufacturing wetsuits for surfers. The
members of the City Assembly wear aloha shirts
during the hot summer months and names itself the
“Aloha Assembly.”
Marty Thomas, Mayor Nobuaki Hattori & Assembly Chair
Late last year, Chigasaki officials expressed a Tadao Hirose.
strong interest in forming a Sister City relationship with Honolulu. In the ensuing months, I met
with Vice Mayor Takehiko Kimura and his delegation and found their interest to be enthusiastic and
sincere. It was obvious that the people of Chigasaki
were prepared to invest in building a viable and sustainable relationship with Honolulu. In February of
this year, the City Council passed a resolution to
establish “Friendship” relations with the Chigasaki
City Assembly of Kanagawa Prefecture. A precursor
for the more formal Sister City relationship, passage
of the resolution was intended to foster closer working relationships between Honolulu and Chigasaki
officials over issues of mutual concern such as beach
erosion, receding coastlines, beach maintenance
and an aging population. The Chigasaki delegation
traveled to Hawaii for more educational and goodwill exchanges and to explore opportunities to build
economic relationships.
With the signing of a formal Sister City agreement on October 24 here on Oahu, Honolulu and
Chigasaki City, Japan, culminated months of planning, exchanges and long-distance discussions. Chigasaki was perhaps the most enthusiastic candidate
in the history of Honolulu’s Sister Cities program
and may serve as a model for future sister city relations. Much of that is embodied in the official
Sister City Agreement signed October 24 between
Mayor Kirk Caldwell and Chigasaki City Mayor Nobuaki Hattori. The Chigasaki City Assembly and the

State Representative
Richard Lee Fale
Serving You in District 47
Aloha neighbors and friends,
It is with gratitude and humility that I write this
last column to you as the representative of House
District 47. On the evening of November 4, 2014, a
new leader was elected to serve this wonderful community as your State Representative. Representative
Feki Pouha is a local boy born and raised in Hauula, a
husband and father, who will represent us with honor
and integrity in the State Legislature. I couldn't think
of anyone better equipped to serve us at this important time in our state. Congratulations and mahalo
to Representative Pouha, we are looking forward to
your service.
As I look back on my term as State Representative, I am proud of what we were able to accomplish
together. First and foremost, we were a voice for rural
communities across the state. We fought against
measures what would raise the cost of living on hard
working families, worked to preserve the unique
character and culture of this community and supported community projects that would provide
much needed jobs to people in our community. We
took steps forward in bringing fast, short-term relief
to traffic at Laniakea and we fought to protect and
preserve families and family values. We replenished
the state's Hurricane Relief Fund and Rainy Day Fund,
prevented efforts to tax pensions and retirements and
repealed the PLDC. I am proud of what we were able
to do, but I also wish we could have done much more.
My love and appreciation for many of you and
for this community itself will never end and I look
forward to finding more opportunities to continue
the great work we have started. Mahalo for this truly
fulfilling opportunity to serve such a wonderful community. I look forward to seeing you on a beach or
football game soon. Please feel free to contact me at
[email protected] if you need anything g from me
or if there's something we can work to accomplish
together. A hui hou and mahalo again for this wonderful ride.

Serving You in District 45
Time Marches On
As we move into the 2014 holiday season, I want
to take this opportunity to let you know that I am
devotedly looking forward to continuing to serve our
community and state as your elected Representative
of District 45. The last two years were very full and
dynamic ones, and I expect that active pace to persist
throughout the next two years.
Please join me in acknowledging the team of
students and staff at Waialua High and Intermediate School for going above and beyond to present a
first-rate Political Forum at the Waialua Community
Association recently. It was inspiring to see our young
scholars eagerly participating in bringing our open
form of government to our community. The students,
Megan Andrada, Lilia DeWilde, Brandon Lucas, Brianna Lucas, and Draven Ozoa, each accomplished their
responsibilities with maturity and professionalism.
The staff, Ms. Dannette Holdren and Principal Avis
Nanbu, led the charge by being enthusiastic organizers
and mentors to the students. To all, job well done!
At the Capitol, preparations are already underway
for the opening of the 28th Legislative Session on
Wednesday, January 21, 2015. My immediate focus
now is on gathering information for Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) from our schools and our community, and researching legislation and bills I will
introduce in January. Thank you to those who have
already approached me with your feedback for 2015. I
invite and encourage you to let me know what topics
you'd like to see move through the legislative process.
The research work must take place now because the
time is very short between the opening of the session
and the deadline for bills to be introduced in January.
The Hawaii State Legislature website (Capitol.
Hawaii.gov) is being updated almost daily with information you will find useful for the remainder of 2014
and the start of 2015. If you or someone you know
is interested in working at the Capitol for the 2015
legislative session, the website provides information
that will guide you through the process of applying for
legislative session staff positions in the House and in
the Senate. The work is exciting and fulfilling because
you see first-hand and contribute to the lawmaking
process. Many current legislators began their journey
to elected office by working as legislative session staff.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions
or concerns about happenings in our community. Call
me at (808) 586-9490, email RepMatsumoto@Capitol.
Hawaii.gov, or visit RepMatsumoto.com.
The Best on Earth:
A Veteran’s Day Tribute
If someone has done military service,
They earn the title “veteran” and more;
They earn our deep respect and admiration;
That they are special no one can ignore.
They sacrifice their comforts we enjoy;
The list is long of all the things they gave.
Our veteran’s are extraordinary people;
They’re loyal, dedicated, true and brave.
When terror and invasion were real threats,
They showed us they could handle any storm
We owe our freedoms and our very lives
To our veterans, who served in uniform.
Our veterans should be celebrities;
They’re exceptional; no other group compares.
We’re grateful for the many things they’ve done;
They’re always in our hearts and in our prayers.
We owe our veterans support and friendship;
Let no one ever question what they're worth.
These men and women served us and our country,
Our veterans—the very best on earth.

Surfing Injuries
Surfing season has begun. As with other sports,
injuries occur, such as lacerations, bruises, sprains,
fractures, overuse, eardrum punctures and concussions. I’d like to focus on two injuries: shoulder
impingement and concussions.
What is shoulder impingement? It is usually a
result of overuse. In surfing, the most likely culprit
is paddling. Paddling consists of a repetitive motion
of reaching forward and pulling back. “Overuse”
can cause inflammation, which causes swelling. This
swelling puts pressure on the nerves in the shoulder
causing pain. Pain occurs with paddling and any overhead activity such as raising your arms to reach for
something above your head. The treatment is icing the
area (ice is anti-inflammatory) and avoiding activity
that triggers the pain. Ibuprofen 800 mg (4 over the
counter pills) or 2 Aleve are also anti-inflammatory. It
is also helpful to consult an athletic trainer or physical therapist for recommendations to strengthen the
rotator cuff. Doing this stabilizes the shoulder area
and may prevent future impingement.
We’ve been hearing a lot about concussions and
football. This also occurs in surfing. Surfboards get
tossed into the air and can come crashing down on
your head. The force on the head can cause a concussion. To review—the symptoms of concussion are loss
of consciousness, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, double vision, ringing in your ears, fuzzy thinking,
disruption to sleep and impaired performance. If you
have any of these symptoms, go to the emergency
room. CT of you head is essential to rule out injury
to the brain. There is a possibility of a delayed bleed
around the brain, which can be fatal! If you’ve had
a concussion, avoid any physical exertion for at least
2 weeks after all symptoms have resolved.
How do you avoid head injuries? Choose where
you surf carefully. Surfing over a shallow reef or in a
heavy shore dump will greatly increase your chance
for head trauma.

Sunset Beach surfer Mahina Maeda, 16, is the

surfers to take the title in Portugal last month. She
now has the most coveted Junior World Title in the

title. She has won before in the ISA but this one is
sweeter and should garner her the main sponsor that
she needs to go on the WQS tour and later make the

all know it is a one-day big wave riding event that
only takes place if and when waves meet a 20-foot
minimum height, during the holding period of December 1 through February 28. The official Opening
Ceremony with the Aikau Family will be held on
Thursday, December 4th, 3 p.m., at Waimea Bay. This
event is an incredible experience when it goes. It has
only been run 8 times in it’s 30 year history when
wave heights exceed the 20 foot mark the point where
world famous surfer and lifeguard Eddie Aikau liked
to surf. The event was last held on December 9th,
2009 and was won by Greg Long from California.

her a seat in the prestigious ASP world Tour elite 24.
“The Final was really fun, it was all about who got
the best waves. I was pretty stoked that I got that 9.00
at the beginning and it kind of set the pace. It felt
really good and I got it without having priority. I just
saw the little wall and I knew I had to go.” pipeline

Famous Hawaii surfer Duane DeSoto has been
invited to play Duke Kahanamoku at “Duke’s Day”
in Australia in January at Freshwater Beach in Sydney
Australia. It is the 100 year anniversary of Duke’s visit
to the area. A custom made replica of the 8 foot 6
inch board that Kahanamoku made there in Sydney
during his visit was taken to Hawaii and ridden by
some of Hawaii’s surfers and DeSoto seemed the most
comfortable on it. “I am not even close to the Duke,”
Duane says. “It’s not that I would feel I would be
replacing or close to replicating what Duke did, but
just trying to come close and humbly put on a good
show that would make him proud. I’m extremely
psyched and excited and I also think it’s wonderful
that Hawaii and Australia have a great bond through
surfing and we will be coming together to share this
great occasion.” Go to dukesday.com for more info!

• Beach cruisers for the current Top 16. World's Top
16 surfers will be role models of bike path usage on
the North Shore, ambassadors of positively impacting
traffic and parking. Bikes will be offered for silent auction at North Shore Community Land Trust’s annual
fundraising dinner and silent auction (November 8,
Mokuleia Polo Fields). Bidders buy the bikes for the
athletes (and will have an opportunity to personally
present them) and at the end of the Triple Crown,
bikes go back to the winning bidders and remain in
the local community. All profits from auction of bikes
go to North Shore Community Land Trust.
• Beach cleanup (hosted by Surfrider Foundation,
sponsored by HIC) at Mokuleia – December 8. 10
a.m.-11:45 a.m. Drinks and Snacks provided. Please
volunteer to help us take care of the North Shore’s
greater “backyard.” Meet at the western end of the
Mokuleia airfield, across from the Glider port.
• Givebacks to local organizations this winter
include: Surfrider Foundation, North Shore Community Land Trust, Mauli Ola Foundation, North Shore
Chamber of Commerce, Sunset Beach Elementary
School, Department of Parks & Recreation, Hale‘iwa
Ali‘i Beach Park public restroom restoration, and still
more to be announced.
• Waste diversion – recycling, composting provided
at all 3 events by Sustainable Coastlines. Last year
the Vans Triple Crown mitigated 100% of its CO2
footprint. This year our goal is to improve our performance even further in the areas of waste diversion,
sustainable catering for staff, recycling, composting
and energy use.
• 6 Water refill stations around event site for athletes, staff and public to use, so bring your reusable
bottles! 500 reusable bottles will be issued on site for
all staff and athletes.
• Turtle Bay Resort will be running a shuttle to
minimize traffic and parking impacts to and from
all 3 events, multiple times a day. Park and ride from
Turtle Bay. Not limited to guests of the hotel. Nominal
fee to ride.
• North Shore’s own Thomas Naylor will be providing organic local catering across all three events.
• Free webcast and free live event entry to surfing
fans continues.
• Paperless registration for media and official attendees onsite (using Samsung Galaxy tablets).
• Announcers/webcast/public education on the
North Shore and importance of sustainability via
public announcements.
• Biodiesel generators
• Carbon offset program - run by Sustainable Surf.
They are overseeing our on-site sustainability efforts
at all 3 events.
• Live broadcast on Oceanic Time Warner Cable in
Hawaii reduces in-person attendance/traffic.
• Outline of sustainability in Official Program (No-
vember issue of FreeSurf - being delivered to North
Shore residences soon!)
• VTCS continues to partner with Turtle Bay Resort,
who earlier this year put the majority of their land
into conservation in perpetuity, and completed the
largest hotel solar roof installation and green roof
installation in the state.
• Repurposing of event site banners from last year
by REEF into totes.
• Vans Celebrity Golf tournament for charity. Beneficiary TBD. Annual event takes place on December
7 at Turtle Bay Resort.

Here Comes the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing
An Interview with Marty Thomas
By Tom Jacobs
The North Shore News (NSN) recently interviewed
Marty Thomas, who has taken much of the responsibility for running the North Shore’s Triple Crown
of Surfing from the iconic surf legend Randy Rarick.
Randy has retired as Executive Director of Van’s Triple
Crown.
NSN: Will you tell us a bit about yourself?
Marty: Sure. I spent my surfing boyhood in Seal
Beach, Southern California. In 1980, when I was twelve,
my mom and I made our first trip to the North Shore
so that I could compete in the Menehune Division of
the U. S. World Surfing Championships. To my surprise and delight, I placed second! Two years later my
mom and I moved to the North Shore permanently,
so that I could pursue a career as a surfer. I surfed the
pro circuit from 1985 until 1997, when I moved back
to the mainland to work for a variety of surf companies in sales and marketing. In 2008 I returned to the
North Shore to work for Randy Rarick in the Van’s
Triple Crown organization. My wife, Shalom, a North
Shore girl, and our two daughters, Emma and Malia,
live with me in Pupukea.
NSN: Did Randy recruit you or did you apply to him
for a job?
Marty: It was a little bit of both. I had always con-
sidered Randy a mentor, and we kept in touch during
my surfing tour days and afterwards. When I indicated
a yearning to return to the islands Randy asked, “Why
don’t you come out and work with me?”
NSN: It must be a strange feeling, filling the shoes of
a surfing icon like Randy.
Marty: Randy’s shoes are impossible to fill by
one person. He was to the Triple Crown organization
as an administrator what Kelly Slater is to surfing as
an athlete in the water, what Michael Jordan was to
basketball. In fact I don’t fill Randy’s shoes entirely.
There are at least five of us who try to do that.
NSN: How so?
Marty: When Randy got ready to retire he created an organization of five directors to run the Triple
Crown. I’m the Competition Director, managing the
three Triple Crown Events. Bert Ishimaru is Managing
Director, Sean Wingate is Director for Sales and Marketing, Jodi Young Wilmott is Media Director, and Faith
Wenzl is the Admin Director. Randy still helps out as
a senior advisor.
NSN: Tell us a little bit of the history of the Triple
Crown, and this year’s schedule.
Marty: Sure. The whole thing got started in 1971
when Fred Hemmings, former world surfing champ
and Hawaii state senator, sat down at a card table with
six surf competitors and one thousand dollars in prize
money to run a surf contest at the Banzai Pipeline.
In 1983 Fred organized the three-event Triple Crown
of Surfing, now in its thirty-second year. This year’s
schedule has the traditional three contests:
The Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa Alii Beach Park,
Nov 12 – 23
The Vans World Cup of Surfing, Sunset Beach, Nov
24 – Dec 6
The Billabong Pipe Masters, Banzai Pipeline, Dec 8 – 20
NSN: What’s your web site?
Marty: www.vanstriplecrownofsurfing.com
NSN: How is the Triple Crown organized functionally?
Marty: Good question. Vans owns the trademark
for all three events of the Triple Crown. Vans licenses
the trademark to ASP, the Association of Surfing Professionals, for the event. ASP funds the Triple Crown,
including prize money. The ASP, by the way, has undergone and is undergoing dramatic change these days.
On the first day of 2014 it became a privately owned
entity, and on the first day of 2015 it will change its
name to the World Surfing League.
NSN: But the surfing spectacle and thrills of the Triple
Crown will remain, right?
Marty: Right. Surfing, after all, is Hawaii’s gift to the
world. We mean to continue with Vans Triple Crown
to provide the best surfing in the world and to display
it all over the world, while being careful to spotlight
the beauty and special mana of the North Shore.

Vans Triple Crown of Surfing,
Thirty Years Spectacular
Surf Season, oh yeah gotta love it. There is nothing better than the mega amounts of wanna be pro
surfers ripping every wave they see to the point of
over exertion. It’s all the best showing off to the
world right here where careers are lost and found.
Or do you loathe it? Well either way just sit on the
beach at Rocky Point on a good day and watch history unfolding, it is quite a show. The entire pro tour
paddles out. New moves, the highest flung airs ever
and crazy roll stunts are on viewing tap. More than
half of all the surf photos that appear anywhere are
taken here during this time of year, amazing and
quite entertaining. It will be a great show so enjoy
the moments. The first event of the Triple Crown of
Surfing, The Reef Hawaiian Pro, starts November 12
through the 23rd at Hale‘iwa Ali‘i Beach. The Triple
Crown has a long history of Hawaiian winners but
no one has won more than Sunny Garcia. Garcia is
a serious contender winning six titles over the years
and three consecutive titles, an unreal accomplishment. Garcia has yet to win the Pipeline Masters but
is confident, he plays to win every event he competes
in. He is good at hustling the young guns into submission, he knows how to play the winning game.
It could be his year, again! Garcia won the Triple
Crown title in 1992, 93, 94, 1999, 2000, 2004, the
titan of the North Shore has a chance of a lifetime
and the determination of a young warrior! John John
Florence at the tender age of 22 has won the title two
times. In 2011 he became the youngest surfer to ever
win the Vans Triple Crown title and is the defending
champion after a combination of a semi final finish
at Sunset and a second place finish at the Billabong
Pipeline Masters last season.
The North Shore’s Kalani David who at 17 has
gained much respect on the North Shore as the next
big thing said it best at the HIC Pro. “John John is the
one to beat,” he said. “I am bigger and smarter than
last year. I got the wipe out of the Triple Crown award
last time and to me that was like the kook award.
My dad still teases me about it. I have stopped doing
the Junior events and I am concentrating on the QS
but I get nervous in the quarters so I am working on
that. I really hope to make it on to the WCT in the
next couple years.” The magic words, make the WCT.
Not an easy task for sure as there are only 32 surfers
on the top. The process takes the top 22 on the year
end WCT (World Championship Tour) rankings, the
top ten from the ASP World Rankings and two ASP
wild cards. Imagine the pressure. Hawaii has only
three surfers on the WCT. Sebastian Zietz, John John
Florence and Fred Patacchia. Patacchia grew up in
Pupukea and rushed the rankings early and only fell
off once due to an injury for just half a year. When
asked about his favorite thing about the tour he says,
“the best part is competing at such a high level, some
Page 19
By Betty Depolito
guys are free surfers or big wave surfers and I love the
passion of competition part of it.”
Patacchia tries to keep up with the Hawaiians that
are on the QS tour. “I try my best to see the young
talent and make myself available to them. Sometimes
the smallest things help, like where to stay, where to
fly in, yeah not get food poisoning.” Patacchia is a
family man willing to mentor Hawaii’s young hopefuls. He is a busy dad and has just had another baby,
a boy, Lincoln.
Tahiti’s Michel Bourez is the defending champion
for the first event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing at Hale‘iwa. It is happening November 12-23 and
there will be some heavy scraping going on for points
to qualify for the tour. There are only two events left
the Hale‘iwa contest, The Reef Hawaiian Pro and The
Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach. Our local
surfers are keen to get those titles back in our hands.
Especially Hale‘iwa as that beach is a place of local
pride where menehune champions grow up to be pro
surfers. We should all remember when Oahu’s Joel
Centeio charged heat after heat in big surf to finally
be lifted up by fellow Hawaii surfers to the podium
for the win. It is contagious, it is what we want to
see, the guy you did not bet on make the final and
get that trophy. Centeio is a hero, he lit up that
place, everybody was screaming for him. It is etched
into our memory banks. Centeio, 31, has not lost his
competitive spirit since the 2009 win. He remembers
his best showing as being the Pipeline Masters where
he took a third in 2003. He has also won the Xcel pro
at Sunset, a turning point for his career he said and
continues to place well in Hawaiian events. He is a
winner and with a little luck he could do it again.
Centeio transitioned on to represent Hurley as sort of
a team manager and do some sports marketing. He too
has a family and does not travel to get those points
any more but stays keen. He grew up in Makakilo
then moved to Hale‘iwa and now has a family to
think about. “I think I would be a carpenter,” he said,
if not pro surfer. “I like working with my hands and
I have done a few things around my house.” As any
good family man would say, “Stay in school would
be my advice to the young kids.” Good advice from
a Dad! We say win, your vacation is waiting!
Looking at a photo line up of Sunset Beach makes
your heart race. The memories of so many breaking
waves of all heights all over a giant playing field sends
the blood rushing! The thought of conquering the
spot is a surfers dream. Last year Hawaiian Ezekiel
Lau did just that when he won the Vans World Cup
of Surfing by finding tube rides in the semi and final.
There is big money and big points up for grabs as it is
a prime contest with the highest points and $250,000
purse. The event is November 24th through December
6th. Lau is rated around 90th going into the events,
Page 20
www.northshorenews.com
the event is November 24 through December 6th. It
will be an all Australian showdown between five time
World Champion Stephanie Gilmore, Tyler Wright
and Sally Fitzgibbons for the World Title. Sally’s is
keen, her last name spells out her guts to glory attitude, “fit” she is. She won the ASP Fiji Womens’ Pro
in big impressive tubing surf. Gilmore has just been
cranking her top turn tail slides all over the world
stacking up points and gaining her three wins this
season. Tyler is all over it. Her aggressive style has
garnered her two wins and a chance to put that big
World Title Trophy in the family house! None the less
Honolua Bay is one of the best waves in the World
when it breaks. It has a spectacular view from the
cliff with powerfull right handers moving around the
corner. It will be a show to behold. So many things
at steak for so many surfers in so many events. The
Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is thirty years young
this year and it is sure to shake things up as usual in
may respects and for many people. Careers made and
lost, unknowns becoming legends, consequences of
nature unfolding where surfing was born. Spectacular!
Congratulations to all!
Banzai North Shore Wireless continued from page 14
Windsurfing, remember that? There is a big windsurfing tour that happens around the world. The sport
died off here in the islands a bit but Maui still is the
place to be if you are a pro wind surfer. The Starboard
Severne PWA Aloha Classic is going on at Hookipa.
The famous, usually windy surf break is the spot where
the best meet to claim their world titles. It is a done
deal in the Womens division Iballa Moreno (Starboard,
maui Ultra Fins) is the official 2014 PWA Wave World
Champion. It was another epic battle with her sister
Daida taking second place. Both are from Spain but
you may have heard of them through other sports
as they are accomplished in many including surfing
and SUP surfing. The men have not completed their
bouts!

for him winning is all that matters. Hawaii does have
two surfers that sit in good spots to go on and represent Hawaii on the top of 2015 World Surf League,
the name has changed. Keanu Asing is sitting at 9th
right now and unless he totally crumbles he should
be good. Also the North Shore’s Torrey Meister is at
38th place, so close to getting a spot and or at least
a great seed! Meister was born on the Big Island and
moved here at a super young age so he is no stranger
to the seven mile miracle of waves. Meister won the
O’Neill Cold Water Classic last year in Santa Cruz
California, a life changing moment. The event win
came with a big check and a job with the company
as a team rider. He explained it as a “grinding” experience. The money allowed him to pay off some
credit cards and concentrate on better contest results
and it paid off for him. There are many variables at
play for his points and to qualify but keep your eyes
peeled, we may have another North Shore surfer on
the podium and on the WCT tour next season.
Just go to Pipeline for the contest, do not watch it
on cable or on your computer unless your miles and
miles away. The Billabong Pipe Masters is crazy good,
no matter what. It carries a half million dollar purse,
$100,000.00 to the winner. The World Championship
Title will be decided there and snap, Kelly Slater has a
broken toe or two heading into the event. He should
be feeling pretty good but for his opponents any little
help they can get is a good thing. Slater is the Master.
He has won the event 7 times, torquing and twisting
his body into every groove of the waves he selects. He
will be challenged. There is a $100,000 Pipe trials this
year for 34 of the top seeds coming out of qualifying
contest. There is also, snap, a Womens invitational
event. The selected wahine will have two heats and a
final durning the Masters and a $10,000.00 purse. Of
course Women have been having contests at Pipeline
for many years now but it is only the second time
the ASP has included the heats and it will probably
be just rated surfers. No word yet on who is in.
The show down for the Wahine will be in Maui.
The Women’s Target Maui Pro was two years in the
making thanks to our own Carissa Moore chatting it
up to her sponsor. There will be a bit of a cross over,

Hale‘iwa Film Producer Presents Fort Bliss To
The Big Screen
Hale‘iwa resident and film
producer, John Sullivan is elated to
present Fort Bliss to the islands for
one week. John will be doing a Q
and A after the Friday, November
14th and Saturday, November 15th,
7:00 p.m. show. Fort Bliss will be
showing at the Consolidated Pearlridge West Theater, 98-1005 Moanalua Road, Aiea, Hawaii 96701.
Showtimes: 11:30 a.m. 2:00 p.m.
4:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m.
Showtime info: 808-483-5339
Fort Bliss Synopsis: A female
Army medic and single mom
returns from an extended tour
in Afghanistan to find she must
now rebuild her relationship with
her 5 year old son. When news of
another deployment threatens the
fragile balance she has achieved,
she must find a way to reconcile
her responsibilities as a mother and
her obligations as a solider. Notethis film is unrated and contains
adult themes. Here is our trailer:
http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/
independent/fortbliss/
Fort Bliss is indeed gaining
traction-not just in D.C. as The
Washington Post’s Critic’s Pick or
as a Saturday night film choice for
the Secretary of Defense Hagel and
his wife, there is also now legitimate
Oscar nomination buzz for Michelle
Monaghan’s performance as combat medic Sergeant Maggie Swann.
