Just seven miles from downtown Chicago, Hyde Park is home to the acclaimed University of Chicago.
Founded in 1892 with the backing of John D. Rockefeller, the University of Chicago is one of the world's
most prestigious universities and integral to the fabric of the community. The University recently invested
over $2 billion into both institutional and neighborhood developments. These include the Comer
Children’s Hospital, the new $700 million Center for Care and Discovery, expansion and improvement

Hyde Park is home to a vibrant commercial district that includes a new Hyatt hotel, the Harper
Theater cinema, and numerous restaurants – including two planned additions by Matthias Merges of
Charlie Trotters fame. A Whole Foods Market location will open in 2014, complimenting the existing
Treasure Island Foods. The neighborhood’s bourgeoning art community is anchored by the Hyde Park
Art Center just off the lake.
The area is known for its lush, beautiful parks and recreational amenities including the sprawling
365-acre Washington Park, the public beaches, the lakefront trail, and the world-famous Museum of
Science and Industry. Built in 1893 as the Palace of Fine Arts for the World's Columbian Exposition, the
MSI is one of the city’s top attractions. To the north, the new 31st Street Harbor offers 1,000 new boat
slips and will feature two restaurants.
With the expressway and the Green Line “L” to its west and Lake Shore Drive and the Metra train on
the east, Hyde Park offers commuters fast, easy access to downtown.
