From the Editor
Don’t take me wrong; there were a handful of
good vendors as well. One of the things I didn’t
like is some tortoise’s being sold with Shell Rot.
I was approached at the show by one of our
members and asked about these tortoises as they
were interested in buying one. First of all, if I
have my choice to spend the same amount of
money for a tortoise that has shell rot or not, I
am going to get the one that doesn’t. But the
point is, these animals are technically sick. They
need to be treated and if not treated, it will get
worse. I think in the upcoming months, I am
going to do an article on purchasing a turtle and
tortoise and what to look for. There are to many
people getting ripped off and it isn’t fair for the
person or the animal.

Hi Everyone,
Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer.
The heat has been moderate. Thank God. I can
only take a few warm days in a row. My
tortoises beg to differ. The Box Turtles are with
me….they want the cooler weather.
As some of you noticed and I heard via email
from some, the month of August didn’t have a
newsletter. I want to apologize for not getting
that out, but I do this newsletter voluntarily and
it is not required by the club to produce. I will
do my best to get one out each month, but once
in a while, I may just have too much going on
and may have to skip a month. This month’s
newsletter is a little larger than normal so I
would like to say I have combined the two
months into one.
Another key thing that bothered me is Theresa
from BAARS called me saying that Petsmart on
Curtner called her asking what was going on
because she was flooded with people coming in
with baby Aquatic Turtles ( Quarter Sized ) and
wanting the small plastic containers for them.
Most of the people who had them were kids. I
am not sure what it is going to take to get people
to buy proper habitats, but I can almost
guarantee in about 6 months to a year, we are
going to see 90% of these come in for adoption.
I know it is a federal law to sell under 4”, but
they post for educational purposes only and
without any enforcement from the Show Staff or
Law enforcement, we just keep running into
problems down the road.
This past month, we as a club have been quite
busy. August 8th and 9th a handful of us worked
the San Jose Reptile Show. I think it was a huge
success. We got the club name out there, had
several types of tortoises and turtles on display
and answered a lot of questions. I hope the next
time we have another show, we could get some
more helpers to be around. I think we wore
Gilbert out between the three days we were
there. Thanks a lot for your dedication on the
shows Dorothy and Gilbert.
Anyways, I would like to thank everyone that
helped at the show. I would like to thank Setiva,
Dorothy, Gilbert and their Grand Daughter,
Joseph, Robert and a couple others who stopped
by. Could not do it without everyone.
Since I had basically three days at the show to
mingle, work and buy new animals, I was
watching a lot of vendors at the show, inspecting
animals and asking a lot of questions. One of
the concerns I have directly pointed at turtles and
tortoises is the lack of knowledge on the
individual species that are sold at the show. One
vendor really had no clue on what he was selling
or how to properly care for them. I think he was
there just to sell animals.
Another August event that I was unable to attend
was Gus’s Hatchday Party. I heard everyone
had a great time and one of these days I will
have to get over there and give Gus a belated
Hatchday Celery.

Coming up on August 28th ( Friday ) The Bay
Area Amphibian and Reptile Society ( BAARS )
is hosting a Turtle and Tortoise club meeting. If
you have a Turtle and /or Tortoise and would
like to show and tell him/her, this is an awesome
opportunity to help promote the club. If you
would like, you can even stand up in front of
everyone and share him/her with everyone and
maybe educate everyone on the species. Please
help support BAARS as this a great chance to

Another key thing I would like to share with
everyone is that the SVTTC is one year old.
With the next upcoming Executive meeting in a
couple months, the club will file for official
status of becoming a chapter. If you didn’t
know, each new and upcoming chapter is
sponsored by an existing chapter and put on
probation until 365 days pass and all
requirements are met. We passed!!!! It was
just over a year ago that I remember the first
ever SVTTC meeting that was held at Baldwin
Elementary School and it looked like a group of
about 30 people looking at each other like we
were all in the wrong place. With the start up
leadership of Jerry Gach and assistance by
Dorothy and Gilbert Castro, we are today one of
the fastest growing chapters in the CTTC
organization. Now lets be the biggest!!
I have heard some rumors at theReptile Show
that TooSlo is going to be sponsoring another
club in the Merced area. So anyone that is in
that area that might be interested, let me know
and I can pass the info on as I get it.

Elections
CTTC or SVTTC for at least 6 months.
In the November meeting, the new officers will
appoint a BOD and the President will appoint
two more BOD officers to join the over all
Board and Officers. The Past president if not
re-elected will automatically become a BOD for
the year following his position in office. The
positions that will be available for office are as
follows:
It is that time of the year that the CTTC Bylaws
state that the individual chapters of the CTTC
must begin seeking out candidates, nominations
and electing new officers for its chapters. This
year will be our first official election outside the
main group that has been working hard to put the
club together.

Since it may not be clearly understood what is
involved with the club officer positions, I would
like to introduce everyone to each position in the
event someone might be interested in running for
a spot within the club. How one goes about
getting on the ballot is they must be nominated
by a club member. Non-members cannot vote or
nominate any member into office. Since most of
our members are still shy and we don’t know a
whole lot about some of the them, we are going
to give anyone who might be interested in a spot
on the board an opportunity to stand up,
introduce your self and give the members a little
info about who you are and what you have to
offer. The current President at the August
meeting will announce a committee of 3
individuals that he has chosen in which one can
be a current BOD that will serve in obtaining
consents and nominations for the upcoming
election of officers and putting them on the
ballot in October. At the September meeting, we
will have an official nomination time at which
any member who would like to nominate a
person will be presented. Once that person
accepts the nomination, they will be forwarded
onto a ballot. In October, the SVTTC will hold
an official election in which members will vote
on who they would like to have in office.
Results will be given at the end of the meeting
and the new officers will start their office
Novermber 1st.
No nominations will be made at the August
meeting, but this will give everyone an idea who
to nominate in the September meeting. One of
the guidelines of the Bylaws is that each
nominated member must be a member of the
President

2. Shall exercise general supervision of
the fairs of the Chapter
3. Shall appoint two(2) members from
the general membership to the Board
of Directors
4. Shall appoint or remove the
Librarian, Refreshment Committee
Chair and the appointees as required

records at the fiscal year end and
upon change of the treasurer, and
send the annual financial report to the
Executive Board
6. Shall me a member of the Executive
Board

meeting programs.
2. Shall assist the President in the
operation of the Chapter.
3. Shall assume the duties of the
President in his or her absence.
4. Shall assume the office of the
President in the event of vacancy
prior to expiration of term in office
until regular elections take place.

A. Misconduct or failure to perform the
duties of an office or Board of Directors
membership shall be considered cause for
removal.
B. Misconduct may include but is not
limited to: illegal activity, conflict of
interest, self dealing, activity prohibited in
these bylaws, and other activities which
are not in the best interests of the Club.
C. Before action is taken the Board of
Directors shall notify the member of the
specific failures with which the member is
charged and shall request that the member
appear before the Board of Directors at a
specified meeting. At that meeting the
Board of Directors may declare the office
to be vacant on a simple majority vote.
D. The Officer or Board of Directors
member may remain a member of the
Chapter unless the Board specifically
votes to expel the person from the
Chapter.
E. The membership shall review the
decision of the Board of Directors.
C. Recording Secretary
1.Shall record and keep the minutes of all
meetings.
D. Corresponding Secretary /Treasurer
1. Shall conduct the Chapter's correspondence.
2. Shall maintain the membership list.
3. Shall ensure Chapter members receive The
Tortuga Gazette by providing a current mailing
list to the Executive Board designee.
4 Shall receive and, with the approval of the
Board of Directors, disburse all funds of the
Chapter.
5. Shall keep all financial records of the
Chapter.
6. Shall give oral financial report at each
meeting, stating all income, expenses, and
balance on hand.
7. Shall prepare the annual financial report at
the fiscal year-end.
The Board of Directors
Shall consist of the Officers of the Chapter, the
past President, plus three (3) active members:
two (2) to be appointed by the President and
one (1) to be appointed by the other Officers.
Such appointments are to be made within one
month after the elections.
1. In case of a vacancy in the office of
President, the Vice President shall
become President. The Board of
Directors shall appoint to fill any other
vacant offices.
2. Meetings may be called by the President
or by two-thirds of the Board members.
3. Special meetings may be called by the
President or upon the request of at least
three (3) members of the board. At least
48 hours notice shall be given. The
business transacted at any special
meeting shall be limited to that
mentioned in the call.
4. A majority of the Board of Directors
shall constitute a quorum.
Directors shall hold office for one (1) year or
until their successors are appointed.
The Board of Directors shall administer the
Chapter. It shall receive applications for
membership, resignations, such reports of
committees as may be necessary between
general meetings of the Chapter; submit
recommendations to the Chapter; and perform
such duties as the Chapter or these bylaws may
require.

authority as follows:

Want to see some aquatic turtles in a natural
setting? Do you need a little exercise? Well,
why not combine the two. At least once a
month, Vice President Robert Shields is
conducting hikes and walks that will take you
through some of the local ponds, streams and
lakes and helping spot some of our native and
non native species of turtles which have been
occupying our waters. It is suggested to bring a
good set of walking shoes, water and a set of
binoculars or a scope to sight turtles in a
distance. These events are open to the whole
family. Walks generally take 1-3 hours pending

The Bay Area Amphibian and Reptile Society
will be hosting a meeting on August 28th at the
Cubberley Community Center in Palo Alto that
is going to have a Turtle and Tortoise theme.
Members of the B.A.A.R.S. will be bringing in
their shelled family members to show off and
help educate other members and non-members.
The Silicon Valley Turtle & Tortoise Club has
been asked if some of us would like to
participate in bringing some for show and tell as
well. You do not have to be a member to attend
or participate.
You do not have to be a member to attend the
meetings. If you would like to join the SVTTC,
membership fee is $20/yr and you can signup at
the meeting or request a membership form by
emailing [email protected] and mailing
to the address on the form. There is also an
attached copy at the back of the newsletter.

those who will be eating at Round Table Pizza
the evening of the meeting. 15% of all club
member pizza sales go back to the club. Please
print out the form and bring with you. If you
forget, see Kevin in the meeting room before
purchasing a meal. If possible, please turn in
receipts to Joseph so we can keep track of the
money spent as well so we can estimate the
money coming back to the club.

Some of the “Hot” topics currently involve the
relocation projects of the Mojave Desert
Tortoise. Another project that is in development
stages is the Snapper Relocation Project.
Currently directed by Robert Shields, Robert is
trying to establish a system or network of
shipping out all Common and Alligator Snappers
out of state per the California Department of
Fish and Game.

is, write down the answer on a blank piece of
paper with your name and email info on it.

One of the rarest turtles/tortoises in the world.
Carapace is a creamy white or light yellow with
dark brown or black patterns but the shell looks
like it has radiating yellow stripes forming a
certain shape that leads to the name of the
turtle/tortoise. Each of these patterns has six or
less stripes.

This months trivia Turtle/Tortoise is Native to
South East China
2. This Turtle/Tortoise is in the genus Geochelone
3. This Turtle/Tortoise lives indry, dedicuous forest.
4. The average maximum carapace size or shell
length is about 14 inches in length. Average size
is 10-12”. Females average 12” while males
average 9-1/2”.
5. This species can be found east of Indian but south
of China
6. The natives eat them and trade to the Chinese for
hardgoods
7. This Turtle/Tortoise sells for on average about
$1000 for a hatchling and $10,000 for an adult
female in the pet trade
8. This Turtle/Tortoise is on the Cities Appendix II
List and is on the IUCN Red List for being
critically endangered and becoming extinct in the
next 10 years in the wild.
9. This country has never granted a single export
permit for the turtle/tortoise since going on the
Cities List so most imported specimens were
illegally collected.
10. A 400 Hour recent expedition with specially
trained dogs and volunteers turned up only 5
inmature individual specimens.

Current Events
Road Trip
Upcoming Events:
On July 17th, I had an opportunity to travel up to
Sacramento and visit another club’s meeting.
The Sacramento Turtle and Tortoise Club is not
a CTTC chapter, but it is still a club that shows
strong interest in turtles and tortoises. The
meeting had about 50-60 people and all were
excited to be there. Even though I am from a
competitive club, many of the members
welcomed me with open arms. The club is
organized and run by Felice Rood who is a “one
women” show. She is in charge of the club, the
newsletter, the adoptions and everything else.
The meeting was very educational as they had a
guest speaker talk about parasites and worms,
which did a great job. Another part of the
meeting that I found useful was the show and
tell. Members who brought in their pets had an
opportunity to stand up in front of everyone and
introduce themselves and their pets. With the
variety of species, members were asking
questions and I thought there was a great bond
there. The exciting part of the meeting was the
raffle. They had probably over 50 products of
various things from supplements to caging. The
area of 5-6 people in which I sat I think took
home most of the prizes. I purchase $10 worth
of tickets and I think 50% of my tickets were
winners. I actually started giving my tickets
away to give others a chance to take some stuff
home. I felt really bad. All in all, I met some
really nice people and had a great time. The
only downfall to the meeting was the 2 hours of
traffic on Highway 80 and the 113 degree
temperatures that day…..yes….113 degrees.
Sometimes I really appreciate living in San Jose.

Happy 24 Hatchday Gus!!!
Members of the California Turtle & Tortoise Club and the Silicon Valley Turtle & Tortoise Club and
their guests are welcome to attend and celebrate Gus's 24th hatch-day party. Bring a story to tell about
your turtle or tortoise as an "ice-breaker", bring some celery for Gus (celery has a nice long handle), and
be prepared to guess how much the large tortoises weigh. Gus shares his home with several Aldabra,
Galapagos, Sulcata and Leopard Tortoises.
Hot dogs, hamburgers, beans, chips, soda, beer, wine, etc will be provided to make this a memorable day.
