The Beverly Hills School Board
took immediate steps to authorize the
closure of the Beverly Hills High
Lacrosse Field after test samples showed
the presence of arsenic in five locations
above what is deemed acceptable by
the Department of Toxic Substances
Control (DTSC).
Of the tested locations, four were
within 15-percent above DTSC acceptable limits and one was 3.5 times the
acceptable limit. The sampling was
done as part of the Environmental Impact Report required by the California
Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)

animal activist Tina Sinatra.
Others, including Recreation and
Parks Vice Chair Frances Bilak, who, together with Chair Simone Friedman,
have led an exhaustive investigation
into creating a dog park in Beverly

the pups.
Stalled for months during environmental analysis, the project was put on
hold because of elevated levels of arsenic in the soil. Director of Community Services Steve Zoet halted planning

Beverly Hills Dog Park Plans Unleashed
For Public Comment By City Council
By Victoria Talbot
The Beverly Hills City Council let
the dogs out Tuesday releasing a draft
mitigated negative declaration for the
20-day public comment period.
“We are the only City in our surrounding cities not to have a dog park,”
said Councilmember Lili Bosse. As
mayor last year, a dog park was a top
priority. “It is long overdue.”
Bosse was joined in those comments by residents and animal activists,
including Teri Austin, president of the
Amanda Foundation, Bill Crowe, executive director of Pets 90210, Marcia
Hobbs, president and publisher of The
where improvements are proposed to
be undertaken.
Although arsenic is a naturally occurring element, exposure to high levels
of arsenic can cause death, according to
the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety & Health Administration.
According to the American Cancer Society, exposure can be hazarderous and
result in serious health problems, including the development of cancer.
“It has always been and remains
about putting our students’ and staff’s
safety first,” Board President Brian
Goldberg told The Courier. “When
Beverly Hills Examines Possible Second
Portal at ‘Wilshire/Rodeo’ Metro Station
By Victoria Talbot
With work underway to relocate
utilities at the La Cienega station, the
Beverly Hills City Council began discussions on the second Beverly Hills
“Wilshire/Rodeo” portal for the Metro
Purple Line Extension, to be located on
Wilshire Boulevard between the alley
on North Canon Drive and Reeves
Drive.
Currently, the line from that station station is to run to Century City at
Constellation Boulevard, pending litigation with the Beverly Hills Unified
School District over tunneling beneath
Beverly Hills High School (ongoing.)
Metro has budgeted a single portal
access on the southwest corner of
Wilshire Boulevard and Reeves Drive
for access to the business triangle which
is to be located at the current site of the
ACE Gallery at 9430 Wilshire Blvd.
Other buildings to be used for staging
are located at 9383, 9393, and 9399
Wilshire Blvd.
In addition, Councilman Willie
Brien requested to have a second portal on the agenda for Tuesday's Study
Session, to examine whether to ask staff
to study that possibility for pedestrians.
An exit on the north side of the street
would avert pedestrian crossings on the
busy Wilshire intersection to reach the
business triangle.
Brien's contention is that the City
should be diligent in exploring every
possibility now because there will not
be any opportunity to do so once the
station is completed.
The cost of a second portal is estimated to exceed $25 million, said City
engineer Mark Cuneo. Costs for the
second portal would then be paid by
City and private funding.
Neither the City or L.A. County has

Hall Files For Second Term Bid On
Board Of Education, Goldberg Opts Out
By Laura Coleman
As of yesterday, Boardmember
Lewis Hall became the fifth official
candidate to file to run in the Nov. 3
Beverly Hills Unified School District
Board of Education election. Current
Board President Brian Goldberg yesterday informed The Courier that he
would not be filing for a third term,
which means that non-incumbent candidates now have until Aug. 12 to file.
Said Hall: “Beverly Hills was once
the model other districts followed and
we can achieve this again by unifying
our purpose and continuing to install
enlightened leadership and confidence
into the schools.”
Incumbent Boardmember Noah
Margo, former Board President Mel
Spitz, Measure E Citizens Oversight
Committee member Isabel Hacker and
former Beverly Hills High School Principal Carter Paysinger have also filed
papers.
Former BHHS co-athletic director
Jason Newman pulled papers on July
14, but has yet to officially file.
“There are important issues that
need to be the focus of this campaign
for school board and instead it has become about adults who feel they need
to prove something,” Goldberg said. “I
am proud of my eight years of dedicated service to our community and my
record of accomplishments while on
the board.”

Protravel International Beverly Hills
Joins In Fight Against Hunger
By Matt Lopez
Fresh on the heels of its Golden
Palm Award win, Protravel International
is continuing its fight to end hunger.
Protravel participated last week in
a “Day of Giving” event to support the
fight against hunger.
Protravel employees and agents
volunteered 200 hours of their own
time, donating 5,014 pounds of needed
food items, while raising more than
$5,200 in donations companywide.
The concerted effort of the Day of
Giving supports food banks and raises
awareness for how depleted those food
banks can become during the warm
summer months.
Protravel had employees in Beverly
Hills, Pasadena and Encino participating. Protravel Beverly Hills donated to
the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.
“Since hunger is a universal issue,
everyone at Protravel was eager to help,
especially since the initiative helped us
appreciate how depleted food banks
are during the summer months,” said
Patrick Fragale, president of Protravel
International.
Protravel is a full-service, dynamic
travel company with annual sales
reaching close to $1 billion. Protravel
was recently named “The Best” small
business exemplifying community support in the 2015 Golden Palm Awards.

during the analysis.
The review under the California Environmental Quality
Act (CEQA) determined that
project-specific
mitigation
measures will reduce the impacts to “less than significant.”
Councilmember
Willie
Brien questioned Assistant Director of Community Development Ryan Gohlich for details.
Gohlich said that the City
will either remove two feet of
contaminated soil and replace
it with two feet of fresh soil as a
buffer, or remove six inches of
contaminated soil, put a waterpermeable mesh barrier in
place, and place six inches of
fresh soil on top.
The soil will then be covered with a surface such as decomposed granite, as yet undetermined.
Similar clean-up measures
are being considered for
Parcels 12 & 13, former railroad land, on Santa Monica
Blvd. The Department of Toxic
Substances Control (DTSC), a
State regulatory agency under
CalEPA, reports that arsenic
does not travel or seep into
groundwater. Nor is it airborne,
thus it poses no threat as dust
during construction or removal.
The site, approved by the
City Council last May, is a
21,000-square foot parcel at
the intersection of Foothill
Road and Alden Drive. That
portion of the parcel is current-
ly leased out, and shares the
parcel with other City uses.
Historically, the site was
used to stable horses for the fire
and police departments. Across
the street Shipp’s Animal Hospital/the Amanda Foundation
has been a veterinary hospital
for 91 years. Dr. Winters’ Beverly Hills Small Animal Hospital has been next door for
decades.
Currently, reported several
speakers at City Council, residents use the wide grassy area
on Foothill for an “unofficial
dog park.” Even the police use
the site for K-9 training and exercise.
Objections originally came
from the four synagogues in the
area, including Young Israel of
North Beverly Hills, Magen
David, West Coast Torah Center
and Chabad of North Beverly
Hills.
RPC Vice Chair Bilak and
Chair Friedman reached out to
the rabbis last May. They negotiated the possible closure of
the dog park from sundown Friday through noon on Saturday
and during the High Holy Days
so that congregants can walk
safely, Bilak said, citing concerns about alleged aggressive
dogs.
With so many dogs on the
street from residents, two veterinary hospitals and the
Amanda Foundation, those
safety concerns would perhaps
be better met by extending the
park’s operating hours to take
the dogs off the street more of
the time, especially on week-
ends.
The Council has tasked
staff to resume conversations
with the synagogues and to reengage the pubic on details
about the park design and operational plans.
City staff suggested the
park be opened from 8 a.m. to
dusk, which has already encountered resistance from
working residents who may
wish to use the park earlier or
later.
Last year, $400,000 was
set-aside for the park design.
Currently, minimal development is planned for the site.
Hobbs suggested cutting edge
dog-friendly exercise and training equipment with the additional available funds from
Pets90210 and other animal
lovers.
One suggestion that already garnered approval was a
separated zone for small dogs.
“Let’s make this the best

Abandoned Pregnant Dog
Rescued In Shelter Parking Lot
By Victoria Talbot
Shelter Hope Pet Shop is
where
President/Publisher
Marcia Hobbs found The
Courier’s new mascot, the Beverly Hills Bear, a great Pyrenees/German shepherd mix.
Last week, a volunteer was
sent to pick up some dogs on
death row at a shelter, where
she found a labradoodle was
tied up in the parking lot with a
note that read, "FREE."
Hours later Shelter Hope
founder Kim Sills received a
call – the labradoodle had given birth to eight puppies.
A veterinarian pronounced
all of them healthy, though
mama dog was near starving.
Now, they are safe and
sound with a foster family until
the babies are old enough to
be weaned at eight weeks old.
Then, they will be ready for
adoption.
"Mama and pups are now
safe and sound," said Sills. "Just
another days work at The Shelter Hope Pet Shop!".
At Shelter Hope, visitors
and volunteers meet over pets,
for a win-win experience.
Every time someone purchases
pet merchandise at the store,
they know that their dollars are
going directly into finding
homes for pets like Bear.
Shelter Hope is a volunteer-run, non-profit pet shop,
The mother labradoodle
which partners with companies like NewMark Merrill,
which donates a store front in a
busy shopping mall in Thousand Oaks for adoptions and
sales of donated merchandise.
Shelter Hope Pet Shop is
located at 193 N. Moorpark
Rd., Thousand Oaks, CA
91360. To learn more about
Kim Sills and the Shelter Hope
Pet Shop journey, you can seeher new film, Saved In America, screening at noon August
14-20 at the Regency Agoura
Hills Stadium 8, 29045 Agoura
Rd. After each screening there
will be a short Q&A with different animal-loving celebrities.
All ticket sales will be donated
directly back into the Shelter
Hope mission.

Rodeo Drive Committee Appoints Battalion To Helm PR
By Laura Coleman
It is all too rare that a man of vision and integrity ascends to a position of influential power–such was
the case of Craig Donahue, the
longtime creative and marketing
force behind Rodeo Drive’s biggest
and brightest celebrations, who
died unexpectedly in March at the
age of 50. Since Donahue’s passing,
the 43-year-old Rodeo Drive Committee has had to reflect on just
who it wants to be in the coming
years as it sought a new public relations firm to fill the spot left by
Donahue’s PR firm.
This week, the committee announced it had appointed Battalion
to direct public relations, events,
marketing and sponsorship acquisi-
tion for Rodeo Drive
“Rodeo Drive is an icon of
fashion, luxury, and entertainment,
and like all true icons, it must continually evolve to stand the test of
time,” Committee president Mark
Tronstein said. “Together with the
Committee, Battalion will heighten
Rodeo Drive’s appeal ... by opening
new inroads through conventional
and social media, sponsorships, and event marketing
[and] evolving proven platforms including the Rodeo
Drive Walk of Style, Rodeo

and Beverly Hills Holiday

also creating new event
platforms that support businesses on the street.”

BEVERLY HILLS
JOE TILEM
(Continued from page 1)
At the time, the City of
Beverly Hills was actively looking to populate the area with
“retail convenience” stores,
which the Federal Housing Administration required it do in
tandem with using federal
funds to create a senior housing project at Crescent and
Dayton. Already, the City had
enticed a barbershop, hair
dresser, dry cleaner, bakery and
grocery store to open in an area
which until then offered few
shopping options; but no one
seemed interested in bringing a
hardware store to the area until
the Tilem’s opened shop.
In the 1990’s, when Beverly Hills’ first hardware store, Pioneer
Hardware,
which
opened on Beverly Drive in
1926, was about to close, the
Tilem’s bought its inventory,
hired its employees and took
over its telephone number, subsequently renaming their store
on Crescent, Pioneer.
“We still have the continuity of the Pioneer from 1926,”
Joe said of the general store
that his son Jeff has run since
1994. “It’s like a wonderland.
We’ve got 10,000 items.”
For his part, Joe’s path from
impoverished New Yorker to
Beverly Hills mayor appears to
have been navigated by providence. After high school, Joe
spent a year-and-a-half attending City College of New York,
before he decided at 18 to enroll in the New York State Maritime Academy to train to become a Merchant Marine in order to avoid getting drafted into
the Army.
After Joe graduated in
1947 with the Naval Reserve
commission as a Lt. Junior
Grade, he spent several months
working as a merchant officer
on multiple ships where
month-long voyages would
take him across the Atlantic to
the Mediterranean, Europe, the
Persian Gulf and the Canary Islands.
Despite the exciting life of
the sea and the allure of those
that were drawn to become
seamen, Joe’s father made it
clear that it was not the career
for which Joe was destined.
“After a few months, my father sat me down and said,
‘Joe, this is not the thing for
your lifetime,’” he recalled. “I
said, ’Okay, I’ll go to college
[and] California looked like a
wonderful place to go.”
Prompted by a suggestion
made by the chief mate on one
ship named Bob, Joe mailed a
letter addressed to the ‘University of Southern California, Los
Angeles’ from Alexandria,
Egypt. “The postman decided it
should go to UCLA,” Joe explained. And so by the time
that Joe returned home to New
York, a formal application was
waiting for him.
After graduating in 1949
with a degree in business ad-
ministration and political science, Joe enrolled in UCLA’s
inaugural law school class
(Class of 1952), which originally comprised 45 men and 5
women students. The top two
students were women.
In Joe’s third year as a law
student, he took a position
clerking for a small Beverly
Hills law firm at 247 S. Beverly
Dr., where he earned 90 cents
an hour. Once he passed the
bar, he was raised to $1/hour.
Part of his clerical duties included working for the Diners
Club, the first credit card company, which Alfred Bloomingdale had started in 1952.
From 1954 to 1960 he
worked for the Diners Club,
eventually becoming the company’s General Counsel and
vice president. Joe’s work
eventually caught the eye of
Barron Hilton, who had recently launched Carte Blanche and despite the fact that the
company was a competitor, Joe
let himself be wooed away to
become General Counsel and
Vice President for Carte
Blanche.
After leaving the corporate
world to launch a law practice
in the early 1970’s, Joe was getting increasingly involved in
the City. Prompted by concerns
that a freeway would bifurcate
Beverly Hills on Santa Monica
Boulevard, just a block away
from where he had moved in
1960 to 619 N. Foothill, he was
determined to make sure the
City stayed unified. In fact, at
the time, the state’s master plan
of California highways designated that a freeway could run
along Santa Monica Boulevard,
the historic Route 66.
“It would have split Beverly Hills in half,” he said, of the
undertaking that resulted in the
state deleting the freeway from
its master plan. “We fought like
fury to prevent that from happening.”
Together with his first wife
June, whom Joe had met at
UCLA and to whom he remained married for 40 years
until they divorced, they raised
three children, Jeffrey, Debra,
and David. All three graduated
from Hawthorne and Beverly
Hills High School, although
only their oldest got the benefit
of having the opportunity to
learn a second language starting in kindergarten before it
was phased out. Today, Joe
counts four grandchildren.
Recently, Joe lost his second wife, Jean, who died just
three months ago. He still
mourns her loss greatly. The
two originally dated in college,
but it wasn’t until the 1990’s
that they rekindled their romance, marrying in 1999.
Following Joe’s success in
making sure that a freeway
would never divide Beverly
Hills, Joe became more involved with the Municipal
League, whose mandate was to
stop excessive development in
the City. In fact, the League
August 7, 2015 | Page 9
successfully sued the City to
prevent the Bank of America
building at the corner of Santa
Monica and Beverly Drive from
being built at 12 stories.
Eventually, friends began
encouraging Joe to run for City
Council, culminating in him
becoming mayor in 1978.
Among his proudest accomplishments while on the
Council was creating a sustainable alternative revenue stream
after Proposition 13 passed in
1978, effectively siphoning off
more than half of the money
the City had previously collected from property tax revenue.
Following Prop 13’s passage,
the City adopted a tax on
rentals and hotels. Joe said he
is also particularly proud of
having been the swing-vote in
the decision to create in-lieu
parking on Rodeo Drive, which
he credits for making the street
a success.
After separating from his
early law partners in 1978 due
to mayoral demands, Joe eventually co-founded Dawson,
Tilem & Gole, a law firm specializing in land use, development and real estate that has
been in the City for now for
several decades and where he
still works today.
“When you reach the pinnacle, you can live in Beverly
Hills,” Joe opined. “The name
of Beverly Hills is such a universal name for a quality of life,
style of life, safety, opulence.
It’s an aspirational city.”

water features protruding
above the homes and Coldwater Canyon Park with the preschool below.
Grading included the export of 8,081 cubic yards of
soil, encompassing 22-round
trips daily for 30 months with
two bars, underground parking
for ten cars, and an indoor basketball court and bowling alley.
The 22 foot-wide Loma
Linda Drive with hairpin curves
and steep hills is reminiscent of
the conditions on Loma Vista
Drive, where construction vehicles killed two LAPD officers.
At the end, Loma LInda exits in
a sharp turn onto Coldwater
Canyon.
In a hearing last December, the Planning Commission
told Aquilini that the project
needed major changes. Four of
the five commissioners, Chair
Howard Fisher the exception,
rejected granting permit approvals.
In fact, Aquilini was advised to meet with a subcommittee, including two commissioners, to create a transparent
dialogue with neighbors and to
improve the project proposal.
However, at the January
meeting, PC Chair Fisher, who
at first recommended the subcommittee, offered the developer the option of bringing a
revised proposal back to the
Planning Commission for a
public hearing–instead of
meeting with a subcommittee
and neighbors.
At the December meeting,
Aquilini was directed to substantially reduce the size and
impacts of the project and City
staff was directed to clean up
the MND, which was full of errors and omissions.
In addition, major traffic
impacts were simply omitted,
including concrete and rebar
delivery and worker vans, construction-related parking and
the failure to identify the preschool in the documents.
And despite having had
more than eight months to prepare the Mitigated Negative
Declaration (MND), the project
was dropped on stakeholders
with only days for review.
Neighbors received the MND
Monday afternoon; the final set
of plans arrived at 11:30 Monday evening by email to neighbors.
Given the history of the developer’s submissions, neighbors knew they had to look
very closely for mistakes and

omissions. Despite residents’
request for time, the late submission allowed little opportunity for analysis and response.
In the revised documents,
the difference in cumulative
square feet was achieved by
the removal of three of the ten
underground parking spaces
and the indoor basketball
court.
The current project proposal still calls for 21,415 square
feet and 5,374 cubic yards of
soil export with up to 18 round
trips per day for 25 months of
hauling only.
But the City’s project
guidelines still only allow for
15,000 cumulative square feet
and hauling 3,000 cubic yards
of dirt. To move forward, the
Planning Commission must
grant R-1 permit approvals for
the exemptions.
“In order to approve a Hillside R-1 Permit for a single
family home, the commission
must make the specific findings
that ‘the development will not
have a substantial adverse impact on the scale, integrity, or
character of the area or on the
privacy of the neighboring
properties.’ The Commission
cannot make these findings,
because the proposed development is nearly four times the
average size of other homes on
Loma Linda,
the
design
clashes with
the
quaint
street of historic homes,
and the project’s massive
decks look di-
rectly into the private backyards of nearby residents,” said
Attorney Sheri L. Bonstelle,
Partner at JMBM.
But perhaps the most audacious request is for a street vacation. The developer is asking
the Planning Commission to
recommend to the City Council
their support to take the end of
the cul-de-sac, which is highly
unusual and controversial, removing that portion of the
street from the public purview
and giving it to the developer.
In exchange, the developer
says that he will build an improved fire department turnaround.
That is hardly a replacement for the cul-de-sac where
people safely recreate and enjoy the views, including residents from Coldwater Canyon ,
where traffic prevents pedestrian traffic, and the surrounding
areas, as well as Loma Linda.
“For the city to grant a private developer exclusive possession of the public right-ofway to the detriment of residents and in opposition to residents–would be breathtaking,”
said Murphy.
In 10 years there have only
been three such vacations; and
only once for residential development.
The Aquilini project has
galvanized the opposition. Yard
signs dot the neighborhood,
proclaiming “Save Our Neighborhood; Stop Aquilini.”
Over 85-percent of neighborhood
residents
have
signed a petition opposing the
project. The Courier is in possession of the letters and peti-

tion for verification.
Overdevelopment,
it
seems, has reached a tipping
point in Beverly Hills.
"This project would destroy
the neighborhood’s intimate
character; invade the privacy of
neighbors and Coldwater
Canyon Park below the project;
generate enormous traffic dangers and congestion on Loma
Linda and Coldwater; and subject the neighborhood to excessive noise and dirt," said
Murphy.
For those who thought this
could not happen here, think
again. Pitting residents against
real estate developers, tension
has crossed the invisible line.
Such galvanization has begun to take shape across the
hillsides of Los Angeles. In Bel
Air, neighbors have formed the
Bel-Air Alliance to fight Los Angeles City Hall and developers.
Celebrity resident Jennifer
Aniston has joined the fray. Sullivan Canyon is facing similar
problems.
The megamansion development has coalesced the
neighborhood as developers
like Aquilini and
Mohamed Hadid begin bulldozing through
canyons where
generations of
residents have
sought refuge.
Neighbors
expressing opposition, some
with lawyers including
Ben
Reznik, are expected to be at

Then I Stood Up: A Civil Rights Cycle
History will be sitting in the audience when LA Opera’s Opera Camp presents Then I Stood Up: A Civil Rights
Cycle, this weekend at the Barnsdall
Gallery Theatre, 4800 Hollywood Blvd.
The production weaves together
suites of music from three operas:
• Hans Krása’s World War II-era
Brundibár that was performed by children imprisoned in the Terezín concentration camp;
• Friedl, about a woman who secretly taught art to the children of Terezín;
• The White Bird Of Poston, about a
Japanese-American teenage girl who
forms a bond with a Native American
boy while living at the Poston Internment
Camp in Arizona.
Friedl and The White Bird Of Poston
are by composer Eli Villanueva and
librettist Leslie Stevens of LA Opera.
Attending today’s dress rehearsal and
all weekend performances will be Ela
Weissberger, 85, who played the role of
Kocour, or the Cat in the original Terezín
presentations of Brundibár when she was
just 11.
Not only will the New York resident
be reliving that experience, but she’ll also
recall her art teacher Friedl DickerBrandeis, the subject of Friedl and portrayed by family friend and Opera Camp
student, resident and BHHS student
Golda Berkman.

MANY COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN—Representatives of UCLA, One Legacy and patient
families toss commemorative medallions into the Gift of Life Fountain during a dedication
ceremony outside the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
UCLA Fountain Honors Donors Who, At
The Time Of Death, Gave Life To Others
Two years ago, Rachel Greenberg
went out to run a few errands. While she
was gone, her husband Glenn suffered a
massive brain hemorrhage. He was taken
to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center
where physicians explained he had suffered the worst kind of brain bleed.
They operated, but after four days it
was clear
he would not survive.
Greenberg was kept on a ventilator and
during this vigil, Rachel learned that
when he had renewed his driver’s
license a few months earlier, he had
become an organ donor. Greenberg’s
donation went on to help 89 individuals,
ranging from 19 to 92.
“Organ donation is a positive and
powerful thing we can do to help families and loved ones transition from grief
to opportunity to help others who are in
need,” said Dr. Paul Vespa, director of
neurotropical care at Reagan UCLA
Medical Center and a professor of neurosurgery and neurology at UCLA David
Geffen School of Medicine.
To honor these special donors who
became organ, eye and tissue donors at
the time of their deaths at Reagan UCLA
Medical Center or UCLA Medical Center,
Santa Monica; UCLA Health and One
Legacy, a nonprofit dedicated to saving
lives through organ and tissue donation
in greater L.A., held a ceremony last
month to dedicate the Gift of Life
Fountain, located in the medical center’s
Garden of Peace. Loved ones of donors
will be able to place special engraved
medallions in the water, and the donor’s
names will be added to an online donor
recognition webpage.
At the dedication ceremony led by
the Rev. Karen Schnell, UCLA Health
director of spiritual care, a plaque was
unveiled by Richard Azar, UCLA executive director of general services, reading:
“Lovingly placed by their family and
friends, each medallion in this fountain
commemorates an individual who gave
the gift of life and health to others
through organ, eye and tissue donation.”
Representatives from UCLA, One
Legacy and families then tossed medallions into the water.
The concept of honoring organ, eye
and tissue donors has been years in the
making at UCLA. The project finally
became a reality, thanks to a monetary
gift made by the late Gary Foxen, a UCLA
lung transplant recipient. “Throughout the coming days, weeks
and months, we
will see family
members coming to the memorial fountain to
place a medallion
honoring
their loved one,”
said
Schnell,
who called the
fountain a sacred
site. “This is a

community
should be sensitive to what is
happening and
give these families space to
honor their very

On Getting People To Open Up, Baby Talk
Q. Dear Dr. Fran: I just got my
first job as a college counselor.
What is the best way to get people to “open up”? Geraldine O.
A. Dear Geraldine: The first way
to help people “open up” is to
create an relaxed, non-judgmental environment.
Do this with a smile and by
projecting an attitude that
“even” university professionals
are imperfect, flawed humanbeings. Help the young college
students see that we, too, are on
a learning curve and the best
way to learn is with self-acceptance and humor.
Also, be sure to ask openended questions, versus yes/no
queries. For examples, instead
of asking “Do you like school

allowing themselves to be more
open and vulnerable publicly.
Generally, it is moms because
they are of the female gender.
That said, this issue is really
very individual specific. There
are many sensitive, intuitive,
empathic, and emotionally vulnerable dads who are comfortable making a fool of them-
selves in public by talking baby
talk with their young children.
And, there are just as many
cool to cold moms who would
rather their husband talk baby
talk than they personally expose
themselves to possible public
humiliation.
Baby Talk originated as a
fundamental way of mirroring
the non-fluent or non-verbal
infant and toddler to demonstrate that a warm, caring caregiver loves them and is trying to
understand their experience,
needs and wants.

LINTERMANS
(Continued from page 1)
“He was very protective of
use of the name,” Eric told The
Courier.
Things escalated quickly,
and Aurelien soon told his son
that he would not be selling
him the remaining shares of the
business.
“I took my tools and left for
two years, I didn’t talk to my father during that time,” said Eric,
who noted that well-known
hairdresser José Eber, who got
his start under the Lintermans,
moved into Eric’s role in the
business after he left.
“José was, and still is, quite
the character,” Eric said, laughing.
Not long after, Eric purchased a salon at the corner of
Camden/Wilshire from trendy
french moroccan hairdresser
Elie Ezerzer, who at the time
was reported to have been dating Priscilla Presley. Eric’s ownership of the salon put him in
direct competition with his father, who at that time had
moved from Rodeo Drive to the
corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Bedford Drive.
The hair wars didn’t last
too long. A couple of years later, after building his name and
reputation in the industry, Eber
left to start his own salon, wiping Aurelien clean of most of
his clientele.
“At that time my father
wasn’t at the shop full-time
anymore, José was really running the shop and when he left
my father couldn’t keep it running much longer,” Eric said.
Father and son finally reconciled a few years later during
a get-together that Eric credits
to Aurelien’s fifth wife. Aurelien, who was now retired from
the field, agreed to allow Eric
to use the classic Lintermans
logo that Aurelien had used
since the inception of the business. That logo still adorns
Eric’s business cards today.
Eric now carries on the Lintermans name, and his father’s
world-renowned dry-cutting
technique, at Eric Lintermans at
Mauro on 421 N. Rodeo Dr.
Aurelien came to Beverly
Hills in 1964 after owning successful salons in Belgium, Paris
and New York.
“Every hairdresser had or
has their own thing, but my father invented the dry-cutting
technique, which is certainly
more difficult than cutting
wet,” Eric said, adding that his
father “never allowed razors in
his salon. I still don’t have a razor in my salon, in keeping
with that tradition.”
The Lintermans client list
over the years has been a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood elite, including names
like Lucille Ball (and occasionally Desi Arnaz Sr. and Jr.), Farrah Fawcett, Blythe Danner,
Tyne Daly and many more.
Outside of his Rodeo Drive
shop, Eric still makes house
calls and said he still cuts the
hair of “Mr. Beverly Hills” himself, Fred Hayman.
Lasting 51 years in Beverly
Hills, or anywhere for that matter, isn’t easy, but Eric says at
the end of the day, it comes
down to the rapport he tries to
build with his clients.
“It’s a people’s business,
you have to know how to deal
with people because so many
funny things happen in their
life and they need to tell someone about it,” Eric said. “I always say you’re paying for the
haircut, but the psychiatry is
free.”

The Art of the High-Heeled
Shoe.”
Organized by the Brooklyn
Museum, the exhibit explores
one of the fashion world’s most
coveted objects and the place
high heels have their relationships to fantasy, functionality,
identity and power. This features more than 100 high heels
and 50 historical designs drawn
from designer archives, the
Brooklyn Museum and the
Metropolitan Museum of Arts’
renowned costume collections.
Beyond the archetypal forms of
high heels – stiletto, wedge and
platform – the exhibition’s focus is on designs that play with
the sculptural, architectural and
artistic possibilities of the high
heel using innovative or unexpected materials or techniques
that push the limits of functionality, wear-ability and conventional beauty through surprising structure, shape and height.
The heels will be exhibited
in six themed areas spanning
the 17th century to the present,
each reflects the design of the
shoes, shifting fashion trends,
social preferences and surprising similarities across cultures

“misunderstanding” and to
write a letter to the City Council in an effort to get Bijan to remove said plaques.
Brooks Brothers landlord
Robert S. Anderson, who is
poised to be voted onto the
Board of the Rodeo Drive Committee, was more outspoken
about what he calls duplicity
on the part of attorney Steve
Webb, who represented Bijan
to get the City Council to approve the installation. Anderson asserted that Webb misled
the City Council by falsely portraying that the Committee was
in support of the installation.
“This is outrageous...it
cheapens the whole idea of the
Walk of Style and the plaques
that we put into the sidewalk
acknowledging designers and
individuals who have had a
major impact on fashion and
style in the industry,” Anderson
said.
The Walk of Style began in
2003 to commemorate fashion
icons. Each recipient has a
plaque on the prestigious
Rodeo Drive.
In fact, as the committee’s
letter will point out, the businesses on the street were unaware that Bijan planned to install plaques on Rodeo Drive.
An email chain dated Aug.
24, 2013 from the committee’s
president at that time, Jim Jahant, appears to support that
the committee was unaware
that Bijan planned to install the
plaques now outside the store,
although it did support the
boutique’s desire to paint the
parking meter yellow to match
the Bijan icon yellow color in
recognition of Bijan’s death on
April 16, 2011.
Jahant writes to Webb:
“Unfortunately, I was unable to
attend the meeting, but I have
been told that the meter was
unanimously approved. However, there was a request for an
accompanying sign that was
not initially discussed with the
committee when the meter was
originally approved. The committee would like to suggest a
small bronze plaque at the
base of the meter rather than
the sign on the tree.”
The email was sent after
Dar Mahboubi, Bijan’s chairman, who co-founded the store
together with Bijan Pakzad in
1976, made a presentation to
the Committee. Mahboubi told
The Courier that when he made
his presentation to the Committee in August, the members
were shown digitally altered
photographs depicting what
the street would look like once
those seven plaques were installed.
“The City Council, Public
Works, Hugo Boss, the Rodeo
Drive Committee, everybody
out their put their stamp of approval on it,” Mahboubi said.
However, not one member

The building being considered is
located adjacent to

by Chase. A conceptual design
from 2011 showed that a "half

erly Drive. For that reason, the
second portal was not pursued.
Other options include a
“half-portal” insisted Brien. “A
second partial portal, not a full
portal,” said Brien, “like in
New York and Washington,
D.C. with escalators or elevators that would take up less
space without the larger impacts.”
Mirisch
agreed
with
Brien's assessment. “You gotta
cross the street,” said Vice Mayor John Mirisch. “We've got
one shot at it. This is one of the
reasons we are paying billions
in taxes to Metro and they
should get it right the first
time.”
Council agreed to have
staff investigate the second portal and look at traffic and parking impacts and budget.
Both stations, La Cienega
and Rodeo/Wilshire, are being
constructed without a plan for
public parking and to date, Cuneo confirmed, Metro has no
curb cut-out for drop-offs, either. “Access is one of the
things we are discussing with
Metro,” he said.
Metro has proposed a bicycle option for access, calling
it “first-mile/last mile,” with a
proposal to eventually incorporate bike share stations
along the route.
Touted as transportation to
the Music Center in Downtown Los Angeles, access to the
Metro is indeed, going to be an
issue.
METRO
ception of Mahboubi, has
voiced any recollection of a
presentation that included the
addition of multiple plaques. In
fact, members aver that the
committee was falsely portrayed to the City Council as
being in support of the installation.
In anticipation of the City
Council approving the installation of the Bijan plaques and
painting the meter yellow, an
April 1, 2014 Beverly Hills
City staff report inaccurately
states that Jahant “indicated”
that the committee supported
the request. In fact, the Committee seems to have been entirely unaware of the presentation to the City Council; if the
committee had seen the presentation, they would have
clearly seen what the City
Council saw–a proposal to
saw-cut the existing concrete
and insert seven 2.5-inch thick
precast plaques.
The report noted that of
concern is that it “establishes
precedence for private branding in the public right-of-way
[and] could blur the distinction
intended by the award of a
Walk of Style plaque on Rodeo
Drive.”
Mayor Julian Gold did not
return The Courier’s request for
comment about what the City
plans to do, given that the City
Council approved an item after
it was misinformed that the
Rodeo Drive Committee endorsed the installation.

POTENTIAL
BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this
property lien, you
should understand that
there are risks involved
in bidding at a trustee
auction. You will be
bidding on a lien, not
on the property itself.
Placing the highest bid
at a trustee auction
does not automatically
entitle you to free and
clear ownership of the
property. You should
also be aware that the
lien being auctioned off
may be a junior lien. If
you are the highest
bidder at the auction,
you are or may be
responsible for paying
off all liens senior to
the lien being auctioned off, before you
can receive clear title
to the property. You are
encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may
exist on this property
by contacting the
county
recorder's
office or a title insurance company, either
of which may charge
you a fee for this information. If you consult
either
of
these
resources, you should
be aware that the
same lender may hold
more than one mortgage or deed of trust
on
the
property.
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale
date shown on this
notice of sale may be
postponed one or
more times by the
mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court,
pursuant to Section
2924g of the California
Civil Code. The law
requires that information about trustee sale
postponements
be
made available to you
and to the public, as a
courtesy to those not
present at the sale. If
you wish to learn
whether your sale date
has been postponed,
and, if applicable, the
rescheduled time and
date for the sale of this
property, you may call
(800) 280-2832 or visit
this Internet Web site

, using the file number
assigned to this case

Information
about
postponements that
are very short in duration or that occur close
in time to the scheduled sale may not
immediately be reflected in the telephone
information or on the
Internet Web site. The
best way to verify postponement information
is to attend the scheduled sale. FOR SALES

INFAMY
We are a nation in peril. Our feckless president conjures political illusions to manipulate
public opinion by misrepresenting the facts. A
brief glimpse of Obama, the fabulist, regarding
matters of extreme public interest:
1. ACA (Affordable Care Act):
“If you like your doctor you can keep your
doctor” and “If you like your health plan you can
keep your plan.”
2. Benghazi, Libya, terrorist attack on the US
Consulate that resulted in the deaths of four
Americans including the U.S. Ambassador: The
terrorist assault occurred on Tuesday, Sept. 11,
2012. On the following Friday, Sept. 14, at
Andrews Air Force Base, President Obama and
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with the
families of the four slain Americans who were
repose in four flag draped coffins. Mr. Obama
misinformed the families about the true nature of
the attack. Instead of informing them that their
loved ones were targeted during a terrorist attack
which he and Hillary Clinton knew was the truth,
he assured them that a videographer was responsible. Mr. Obama was running for re-election
with a foreign policy mantra of “al Qaeda’s on
the run.”
3. Syrian chemical weapons issue: Mr.
Obama, who threatened the Assad Syrian regime
with the use of military force if it didn’t destroy
all of its chemical weapons, assured us all that,
in fact, Syria had complied as a direct result of
his expert diplomacy. Even John Kerry, current
Secretary of State, joyously sang with the chorus
triumphantly whistling in a speech on March 25,
2015: “We cut a deal and were able to get all the
chemical weapons out of Syria…” Yet the CIA,
now completely contradicts President Obama
and Secretary Kerry, claiming that Syria has
retained its chemical weapons arsenal which it
hid from inspectors.
3. The Iran Nuclear Deal: At the outset of the
alleged negotiations with the Iranian Islamofacist regime, President Obama promised the
American people that the objectives of any deal
would be to dismantle Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and put in place a reliable program assuring
“anywhere, anytime” inspections. As recent as
April 6, 2015, Mr. Obama’s deputy national
security advisor, Ben Rhodes, re-affirmed that the
“anywhere, anytime” inspections were very
much part of the deal.
Pursuant to the Iran Nuclear Agreement
Review Act which President Obama signed into
law in May, before the Iran nuclear deal had concluded, the administration, henceforth in negotiations with Iran, would be required to disclose
and supply all nuclear agreement documents
related to the deal including those “entered into
or made between Iran and any other parties.”
Yet, not until Senator Tom Cotton’s recent trip
to Vienna to meet with the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) did we learn that there
were so-called separate side, secret deals entered
into between the IAEA and Iran. Sen. Cotton disclosed this vital information to the American
people not the Administration! As of this writing,
neither the Congress nor the American people
have copies of these agreements.
Two significant issues are addressed in these
secret side deals: inspections and existing
weaponization. Iran has now made clear its
intention not to permit any Americans or
Canadians to be part of the inspection process.
Iran has further shut out the IAEA for a decade
already from having access
to inspect the Parchin military site where Iran is
suspected of carrying out experiments and tests
on weaponizing a nuclear device.
On July 31, 2015, Mr. Velayat, a top advisor
to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, appeared on
Al-Jazeera T.V. and stated: “Regardless of how the
P5+1 countries interpret the nuclear agreement,
their entry into our military sites is absolutely forbidden. The entry of any foreigner, including the
IAEA inspectors or any other inspectors to sensitive military sites of the Islamic Republic is forbidden, no matter what.”
Also, Iran refuses to submit a declaration of
its existing weaponization capability. Without
that information, we will be unable to know the
extent of its cheating and its capacity to breakout in time to fulfill its national commitment to
become a nuclear power.
Finally, with respect to the secret separate
side deals, the Administration accepts the reality
that the Iranians and the IAEA will know the content of the deals but not the U.S. Congress or the
American people. In fact, when the
Administration informs the Congress what it
knows of the secret deals, it does so only in
closed session. By way of analogy, would it
offend your common sense if I suggested to you
that if you were purchasing a home that you
would demand having in your possession a copy
of the exact separate agreement entered into
between your banker (mortgagor) and the title
company on which you are relying to grant you
full unencumbered title?
Similarly, shouldn’t the American people and
the Congress have copies of these secret separate
side deals?
You don’t have to be a radical rationalist to
disclaim Obama and Kerry’s delusional, mindless
sponsorship of the mortally dangerous Iran
nuclear deal. By lifting sanctions, Iran will
receive one-hundred plus billion dollars that it
will use to sponsor terrorism against the United
States and Israel as it has uninterruptedly through
today and help increase its nuclear program. This
deal will assure that Iran will develop a nuclear
weapon. When it gets it, Iran has already stated
that it will annihilate Israel and be able to
weaponize and deliver ICBMs into U.S. cities.
Recently, Khamenei authored a book entitled
Palestine – a 416 page screed of hate that wreaks
with his message of destruction to America and
Israel and addresses his view that the Holocaust
never happened!
In 1938, at Munich, Germany, the western
Allies negotiated with Hitler and his Nazi sycophants. Hitler demanded the Sudetenland, a
north western portion of then Czechoslovakia,
and the Allies gave it to him without a Czech at
the conference table. British Prime Minister
Neville Chamberlain returned to England and
pronounced peace in our time. Winston
Churchill responded in substance that at Munich
the Allies had a choice between dishonor and
war. They chose dishonor and got war.
Nuclear weapons, guided missiles, and
armored tanks trump the “good intentions” of
those unable or unwilling to face evil which must
be confronted and destroyed if civilization as we
know it will prevail.

former mayor of Beverly Hills.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Aug. 7). Go for the long shot! Bravery will be
rewarded many ways, starting with the companionship of a muchadmired friend. September brings a landmark acquisition. You’ll sparkle
by inspiring others to be resourceful and creative in October, a financial
high. You’ll ink a new deal in January. Sagittarius and Virgo people
adore you.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Rarely do you find yourself in a horrible situation you must endure. That’s why boredom is a bigger threat than any
other these days and one you’ll stave off with the help of an Aquarius.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). When you look at something long enough,
you start to unsee it. It’s the primary reason people don’t constantly celebrate the beauty of their hometown and family members take one
another for granted.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). The bigger obstacles need to be handled
with a lever. Look around. What can you use to dislodge this? “Give me
a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall
move the world.”—Archimedes
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). The day favors good habits. There’s
one quickly becoming part of your regular routine. Soon this will be
deeply ingrained in your manner, and people will see it as “so you.”
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You’ll soon make the effort to see
someone, and that intention, plus the scheduling, travel, parking, etc.,
will be, in and of itself, a gift. And yet, you still need to bring a gift.
You’ll find the perfect one today.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Usually, you’re the one who has to come
up with a plan. Today, someone you trust will present you with ideas
you would be wise to accept. Excellent!
PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). You like to be liked, but you don’t need it.
That’s why, when you catch yourself subconsciously working for the
approval of an authority figure, it bothers you on a deep level.
Remember that, ultimately, you are the boss of you.
ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). You don’t need to be confident to be effective.
Some days you’re unsure of yourself, and it's actually appropriate for
the situation. A lack of confidence can help you learn all you can from
the situation.
TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). Though a cynical view may be more intelligent and snark can be hilarious, kindness cannot be overrated. It’s
connected to compassion, patience and, ultimately, love.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Some believe weakness should be rejected,
stomped out, eliminated. Others think weakness can be turned into
strength. You believe weakness must be turned into strength. It's the
only way to greatness.
CANCER (June 22-July 22). There was a time when you didn’t feel you
had a right to express yourself. Now you see that speaking your mind
and asking for what you need are ultimately better for everyone.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Like oxygen fuels a fire, what you lack fuels your
ambition. Therefore, when you’re sad or angry about what you lack, it’s
your choice. You could also apply another emotional tone to the situation–or instance, determination.
