A Message From the President
As Academic Year 2008-2009 winds down, it is important to reflect back on the many accomplishments
of our students, our staff, and the many alumni, parents, and community members who have done so
much to support our students, our families, and the entire Garces Memorial High School community.
On May 19, 157 seniors will receive diplomas as proud graduates of this fine institution. Under the direction and guidance of a dedicated administration, faculty and staff, these young women and men have
made outstanding strides in the classroom, in their extra-curricular endeavors, and in their parishes and
places of worship. Their commitment to the mission and philosophy of this school over the past four
years has allowed them to grow intellectually, socially, and most importantly spiritually and religiously.
We wish them the very best in their future endeavors. We are honored to have them become a part of
our dedicated alumni base.
This Spring edition of Mission Magazine focuses not only on our alumni and the many accomplishments of our entire student
body over the past school year, but also on the many contributions and efforts of you, our loyal and tireless supporters. As a community, we are truly blessed. During this difficult and challenging economic climate, you as a collective community have continued to support our school, its mission and philosophy. I want to thank those of you who have had the opportunity to personally
contribute to our school, be it through your support of our Fund the Future Capital Campaign, your support of our various fund
raisers and social events, or simply through your thoughts and prayers. Through your support, we will continue to offer the finest
Catholic, faith-centered, college preparatory education possible to our students and their families.
The Saint Dominic Student Chapel will be completed this summer. The Student Chapel brings a presence to our campus that is so
very crucial to our mission and philosophy. As a Catholic school, it is imperative that our students, faculty, and staff have a house
of worship befitting our Catholic heritage. With the completion of the Student Chapel, we will be able to host Masses and Sacramental services for entire Garces Memorial classes, clubs, and athletic teams. Additionally, through the generosity of many of you
in the community, we will begin renovation of the “Our Lady of Grace” statue and Grotto area south of the Student Chapel. When
completed, it will include a grassy area large enough to accommodate the entire student body for outdoor Masses and religious
services and a “Stations of the Cross” walk-way. It will truly be a reverent and peaceful area of prayer and reflection. Renovation
will begin in the summer of 2009.
Please take an opportunity to read the “Garces Memorial Family Tree” section of this publication. While all of our students and
families are valued and appreciated, the number of graduates who choose to send their children to Garces Memorial is impressive
and speaks highly of their experiences while students and their continued support of and belief in our school. Equally impressive
is the section dedicated to our brave young male and female graduates who proudly and fearlessly defend our country through
their participation in our Armed Forces. To them and to all members of our military we owe a great debt.
As always, I invite you to visit our campus whenever you have the opportunity. Please feel free to contact me to arrange a date
and time to tour the facilities and meet our students, faculty, and staff. We are so very proud of our school and our entire community.

While attending OLPH, these girls
joined a Girl Scout troupe to have fun never thinking that they would be Girl
Scouts all the way through high school.
In true Garces Ram fashion, they have
set a goal and are determined to complete their Gold Award - which is the
equivalent of an Eagle Scout. The girls
have until they are 18 to qualify. We
have no doubt they will all be “golden”.

Elizabeth Samson entered a photograph of the artwork painted

Kern County Fair. She won 2nd Place in the Junior Photography Division. Elizabeth will go to Creighton University this fall
where she has been selected to be part of the Freshman Leadership Program. She plans to major in Advertising and minor in
Photojournalism.

Mock Trial Team - Kern County Champions!
Garces Memorial High School ended an undefeated season by emerging as the best among 16 high school teams that competed in the Kern
County Mock Trial finals held at Kern County Superior Court in Bakersfield. Members of the team in alphabetical order are: Camille AngelesCastle, P.J. Atchison, Jenna Bowman, Paige Boyer, Joseph Chee, Megan Cullor, Ashley Datinguinoo, Jane Datinguinoo, David Freed, Rachel

Student Profile
Sean McNally
2008-2009 Commissioner of Entertainement
Sean McNally knew he wanted to attend Garces Memorial High School since he was
eight years old standing on the sidelines on Sam Tobias Field watching his uncle, Clay Farr,
coaching the varsity football team. He knew he was meant to wear “green and gold” and become
a Ram. Funny thing was, Sean wasn’t raised Catholic, his parents weren’t Catholic, and he grew
up attending public schools. Sean sat down with his parents and discussed his options for high
school and, to our good fortune, Sean became a Garces Ram.
But Garces gave more to Sean than football. You know the phrase “he found religion”? Well,
Sean found his. His family attends Valley Bible Fellowship, but Sean knew it wasn’t what he
wanted. He started looking into different religions, but he says when the Varga Family took him to
Mass at OLPH, he knew the minute he walked in the door that “this is where I need to be. It was
like the Holy Spirit hit me”. Sean began RCIA at OLPH and he went to classes every Tuesday
from September to Holy Saturday and became initiated into the Catholic Church his freshman year
at Garces Memorial. He hasn’t missed church since - even
when he’s out of town. It’s not unusual to see Sean at OLPH
by himself attending Mass. Sean became a member of Campus Ministry this year and looks at it as another step in his
faith. Sean says he likes to be a “role model to other students that being in touch with God is serious
and important but you can also be a regular guy and hang out with your friends.” He demonstrates on
a daily basis that his faith comes first.
Sean is the Garces Memorial Commissioner of Entertainment which means he assists in the planning of the rallies, participates in the games at the rallies, plans the school dances so they are fun for
everyone, and tries to get students involved as much as possible. He is a member of CSF, a founding
member of the Hurricane Club, and is restarting the Letterman Club. He is also a member of FCA,
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which is comprised of 125 local students who meet to discuss how
to become better Christians. Sean played football all four years, baseball his freshman and sophomore
years, and swam his junior year.
Chemistry is his favorite subject as he loves working with all the elements and creating substances.
He never thought he would like science and he loves it - thanks to Mrs. Janie Leedy. She made it fun
and because of her he took Honors and AP courses. Sean plans on majoring in Chemistry in college
and eventually becoming a pharmacist.
Sean plans to follow in his uncle’s footsteps and play football at the college level and his dream is to
play for Cal Berkeley. Although Sean has had offers from numerous schools interested in having him play college football for them, he has
opted to go to Bakersfield Community College to try and make his dream of playing football for Cal Berkeley a reality.
He had one goal when he was accepted to Garces - to win a Valley Championship. He realized his dream as he was part of a Valley
Championship football team his sophomore year. Sean accomplished his goal, and so much more.

Alumni Board
Garces Memorial has resurrected the Alumni Board and is excited to have such a broad based group covering every
decade since Garces Memorial first opened in the Fall of 1947. The Board of Directors will plan Homecoming
events, opportunities for alumni to worship together, a spring picnic on campus, and the annual Hall of Honor.
The Alumni Board accepts nominations for the Hall of Honor, reviews the nominations, votes on the nominees and
selects the annual inductees based on a majority vote. As the Alumni Board evolves, look for some great alumni
activities to come! If you have an idea for an alumni event, please contact an Alumni Board Member or Lou Ann

Garces Memorial Celebrates Homecoming
On Friday, October 3, 2008, Garces Memorial celebrated Homecoming and had a “float” in the Homecoming Parade for alumni who
were celebrating their class reunions. The Class of 1967 took full advantage of the fun and a few members of the Class of 1993 did so as
well. We will have an alumni float again this year for any of our class reunions that are held Homecoming Weekend.

On Friday, September 19, 2008, Garces Memorial Alumnus
Gary Ogilvie organized a tribute to former Garces coach
Marvin Mosconi. Gary invited alumni from the classes
of 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1955 to
come out and honor Coach Mosconi. It was a fun evening
for all in attendance.

On Thursday, October 2, 2008, Garces held its annual Fall BBQ. This year, our volunteers served over 700 people Gary Icardo’s World

Alumni Spotlight
Pat Lencioni
In 1983, Pat Lencioni’s classmates voted him “Most Likely to
Succeed”. They knew Pat had a bright future and would one day
leave his mark on the world, but who could have imagined the
extent of his success.
While at Garces Memorial, Pat was the Valedictorian for his
class, ASB President, played football, basketball, and ran track.
To say he ran track is an understatement – he was the fastest
miler in Bakersfield in his senior year! After Garces, Pat went
to college at Claremont McKenna College where he majored in
Economics and minored in Spanish. He was recruited on campus
to go to work for Bain & Company, a consulting firm in San
Francisco. While there he began to develop an interest in the
“human” side of business and went on to work for Oracle where
he created his own job – “Organizational Development”. He was
later hired away by a competitor, Sybase, and after five years, he
became Vice President. Pat was then approached by both Steve
Job to go to work at Pixar and by the current CEO of Google. Pat said “thanks but no thanks” to both offers and decided to open his own
company. He took four employees with him and began “The Table Group” - a consulting firm dedicated to helping organizations of all
kinds function more effectively through better leadership, teamwork, and overall health. That was eleven years and eight books ago.
Pat published his first book, “The Five Temptations
of a CEO” while his wife was pregnant with twins
and he was buying his first house. Talk about a
multi-tasker! Pat’s books are fiction and feature
Catholic characters facing up to organizational
problems. The book that really put Pat on the map
was his third book, “The Five Dysfunctions of a
Team”. It has been named as one of the top 100
business books of all time and has been on the
Wall Street Journal’s best seller list for the past six
years. His eight books, including The Five Dysfunctions of a Team and Death by Meeting, have
sold a combined 2.5 million copies. Pat is a much
sought after speaker earning $55,000 a speech
(for all of you who heard him speak while he was
at Garces – you got a bargain!) He has spoken to
executives of numerous organizations and professional sports teams such as the San Francisco
49er’s and the San Diego Chargers. Southwest
Airlines hired Pat to be the first outsider to work
with their executive team in 12 years. He has
been on the same stage with Colin Powell, George
Bush Sr., Rudy Giuliani and recently with Olympic
Champion Michael Phelps. And in November,
Fortune Magazine named Pat as one of the “Ten
New Gurus You Should Know”. Pat’s books have
been translated into fifteen languages and are sold
throughout the United States, Ireland, Canada,
Mexico and Germany.

Pat met his wife, Laura, while they were in college. They have four sons,
ten year-old twins Matthew and Conner, six year-old Casey, and two and
a half year-old Michael. Laura became Catholic one week after their
youngest son, Michael was born. Pat is a very involved dad and coaches
his son’s soccer and basketball teams. Pat and Laura make their home in
Alamo, California.
On May 16th, Patrick Lencioni, Garces Memorial High School Class of
1983, was inducted into the Garces Memorial Hall of Honor.

is an All-Source Military Intelligence
Officer for the U.S. Army. As an Executive Officer of Alpha Company in
Iraq, he assisted in leading the development of the US Army’s first MultiFunctional Team; collating, fusing and
disseminating intelligence analysis
reports used to brief actionable intelligence to ground force commanders;
and provided senior analytical support
to junior analysts, the Quality Assurance of reports and briefed reports to
Battlefield Commanders which led
to the killing/capturing of numerous
High Value Individuals, AQI leaders
and leaders of Former Iraqi Regime
Elements and Former Regime Loyalists. He has helped decrease violent
attacks by 85% in Central Iraq from
JAN - MAR 2008; bolstered regional
security, enhanced commercial confidence and restored interest for the return of Internally Displaced Persons.

Lieutenant Aaron Miller ‘95 is
currently an officer in the U.S. Navy.
He has served posts at the U.S. Naval
Academy and at the Great Lakes
Training Center. Aaron has a Masters
Degree in Biochemistry and Molecular
Biology from Colorado State
University. He originally served as a
Professor at the Naval Academy before
being given the post as the director
of the science laboratory at the Great
Lakes Training Center. He will be
completing his service in a few months
and will then begin medical school at
the University of Chicago. He scored
in the 98 percentile (nationally) on the
MCAT during his time at the Naval
Academy
Derek Wales ‘06 with T. Boone Pickens at
West Point in September of 2008.

Carolyn Vu ‘08 is in her freshman year
at the U.S. Naval Academy where she
is a history major with a minor in
Arabic. She hopes to eventually go
into Naval Intelligence or the JAG
Corps. She has been selected to be in
the SHAPE program (similar to the
Garces Link Crew) and begins training
for it this summer.
Ryan Frank ‘99 is currently serving in the U.S. Navy
as an Electronics Technician First Class Petty
Officer on the USS Nimitz. He entered the navy in
Fall 2003. His six year term is up this year at which
time he will be attending Boston University to
pursue an MS-MBA degree. (Masters of Science in
Information Systems and Masters in Business
Administration).

Charlie Judge ‘08 is in his first year at California Maritime Academy
and is studying engineering. Charlie has also taken up Crew Racing
and has competed against Cal Berkeley, UCLA and ASU. He competes
in the Men’s 8 and the Men’s 4 and is a port side rower. His favorite
memory to date? Beating Stanford!

Alumni Baseball Game
The inagural Garces Alumni Baseball Game was held on Saturday, February 21st. The stands were filled, the dug-out crammed and the
BBQ sizzled. The event brought back alumni from as far back as the mid-seventies to once again compete for the Garces Memorial Rams
on David A. Fanucchi field.
The ceremonial first pitch at the inagural event was thrown out by the children and grandchildren of David A. Fanucchi. Joe Bell, team
captain and catcher for the Rams and grandson of David A. Fanucchi, received the pitch from the youngest descendant, Lucy Brown, who
handled the throwing honors.
The Garces Alumni Roster included Ron Fanucchi, Daniel Clerou, Joe Gardiner,
Jimmy Gardiner, Johnny Sanchez, Alex Delgadillo, Joey Amarante, Mike Nieto,
Clint Keown, Ben Sill, Ryan Mask, Matt Pearl, Drew Johns, AJ Antongiovanni,
Brian Foster, George Moncier, Brennan Spencer, Noe Flores, Chirs Holloway, Mike
Grigg, Tom Sakowski, Jeff Johns, Chase Hoffman, & Mark Boyich.
The David A. Fanucchi Family
The game involved a dominating performance by the Alumni as they handed this
years team a 17 - 9 thrashing! The game remained close for the first four innings
and then the alumni found their swing. George Moncier hit the first Alumni Game
homerun with a shot to right field. Fathers and sons battled on the field: Ron
Fanucchi ‘85 & Andrew Fanucchi ‘09 and Tom Sakowski ‘76 and Nick Sakowski
‘11. Brothers also faced off: Noe Flores ‘05 & Abraham Flores ‘10 and Jack
Campbell ‘ 07 & Grant Campbell ’11. Congratulations to the Alumni for the win!

Mary Margaret Ravell Goodwin Class of 1955
In April of 1963, Mary Margaret Revell Goodwin ‘55 went to Sicily to become the first woman and first American to swim the Straits of
Messina between Italy and Sicily. There was a U.S. Navy ship in port in Sicily, so she dressed in a proper dress, matching coat, and white
gloves, when she went to ask the U.S. Navy ship for assistance with charts and tides. (White gloves were required in those days for proper
young ladies, especially since she was a Garces girl. Afterall, Sister Laurentia, her principal would have expected it!)
Unknown to her was that this was THE flag ship of the Admiral of the 6th Fleet, and he was on board. Not only did the Admiral organize
the details such as dates and tides and times, he ordered his U.S. Navy Seals to accompany Mary Margaret with their rubber Zodiac boat.
Mary Margaret reached the shore of Italy without too much difficulty, but the return swim to Sicily was more arduous and the last mile was
a tough haul. When Mary Margaret reached the shore, she was immediately wrapped in blankets and handed up through the crowd to a
waiting car to return to the hotel. It took her five hours and 22 minutes to swim the 13 miles. It was a great victory. The first woman, the
first American, and the first Garces Memorial Ram to accomplish the swim. That was forty-five years ago this past April.
Mary Margaret has agreed to once again swim the Straits of Messina this summer at the age
of 72. Good luck Mary Margaret! You make us all proud to be a Garces Ram!

Allison Clerou Ulbrich ’99 married
Peter Jacob Oswald on May 3, 2008, at
St. Francis Church. Allison and Pete met at
Loyola Marymount University during their
undergraduate studies. They reside in Santa
Monica, California, where Allison is a
Doctor of Physical Therapy.

How Your Support of Special Events Helps Garces
Recently, the Garces Memorial Advancement Department surveyed some of the supporters
of this year’s Special Events. One of the findings from the information received from our event attendees, volunteers and sponsors was they were uncertain how their contribution was being used to
support the school.
Revenue generated from the three primary special events (Fall BBQ, Garces Gala and
Msgr. Leddy Golf Classic) help support tuition assistance for deserving Garces students as well as
support student athletics and extracurricular activities.

Fund the Future
Garces Memorial officially kicked off the
public phase of the Fund the Future
Campaign in March of this year. During
the remainder of the 2008-2009 academic
year, Garces Memorial will be asking
parents, alumni, parents of alumni and
friends of Garces to support the campaign.
Starting in April, volunteers have been
hosting gatherings to share with others the
Garces vision. During the month of May,
alumni and parents will be making phone
calls to fellow classmates and parents
asking for their support.

I was glancing through an old Scientific American magazine article recently that was entitled, ”Like
Fine Wine, Personality Improves with Age.” Of course as one matures gracefully, titles similar to
this one referring to either fine wine or more specifically the positive aspects of growing older tend to
more readily catch one’s attention. In this particular article, the author, Ms. Laura Wright, discusses
new findings which refute previous arguments by some experts who thought that personality was genetically programmed to stop changing at a certain age or other experts who asserted that only a very
few aspects of personality may actually evolve through adulthood. Ms. Wright refutes these beliefs
as she references studies indicating that personality is plastic and changes do come with age and are
generally for the better.
I wonder if this assertion regarding an individual’s personality change might not also hold true for
a group of individuals sharing common beliefs and mission or even for an entity made up of individuals who may change over time but
whose mission and beliefs remain constant over time. I would offer that Garces Memorial High School is such a entity and it serves as
proof positive that while personality adjusts to conditions around it, it also does continue to improve with age. Much like plastic, Garces
has been able to make the necessary adjustments as it ages, so that it continues to strongly support its common beliefs and mission and
work to assure that any change is generally for the better. Garces, which proudly exists through its past, present and future students, parents and faculty, who in partnership share the common beliefs and mission to excel as a Catholic, coeducational, college preparatory high
school whose purpose is to educate its youth to fulfill the mission of Christ by developing students spiritually, intellectually, and socially.
Appropriately then, let us lift our glasses and toast all those past, current and future members of the Garces community who have and will
continue to make Garces great. By any standard, Garces is a very fine wine.
One change that I am proud and pleased to announce is that of our new Administrative team for Garces Memorial High School beginning
this fall. Supporting me in my role as Principal will be Mr. Mike Susank and Mrs. Michelle Jackman. Mike will serve as our Assistant
Principal for Academic Affairs. He has been at Garces for the past thirteen years teaching World History and more recently serving as
Dean of Students. Rumor has it that coach Mike also assisted in leading the way for Garces to successfully compete at the Division II level
in athletics. Congratulations to coach Mike and all the former members and coaches of our previous track team that won their valley title.
Congrats also this year’s Girls Volleyball and Boys Basketball teams for joining you all in your outstanding accomplishment.
Michelle will join the Administrative ranks and serve as our Dean of Students. She has been at Garces for nine years having taught in
our Theology Department. Anyone who has had a chance to look through a recent Yearbook will note her artistic flair as she oversees its
development and publication. Michelle, Mike and I invite everyone to attend and we look forward to meeting and chatting with you at one
of the many events our students participate in this new school year. We want and need your continued support and feedback whether it be
in helping us to fulfill our role in our partnership to educate your sons and daughters or to ensure Garces continues to be the most admired
High School in the Southern San Joaquin Valley.
In closing let me again thank all past, present and future students, parents and faculty who have helped us add another successful year to
Garces Memorial High School’s illustrious history. With the continued assistance, support and guidance from all our alumni and friends,
we can successfully fulfill the vision for Garces to be the
Catholic college preparatory school acknowledged for 1)
its dedication to inspiring its students to develop spiritually, intellectually, and socially, 2) its partnership with
its parents to ensure a safe campus setting that provides
both a welcoming and challenging environment and, 3)
its parental involvement, alumni support and community
participation.

A Message from the Rector
This year we have seen a tremendous development of the school’s long range vision. It has been a
wonderful experience for all involved and may I proudly note one.
As a former Garces chaplain, I am most pleased with the extensive renovation that returned the All Purpose Building to a place of worship for our students. The Garces Student Chapel is nearly completed
and the transformation is impressive, thanks to a great measure to the artistry of Mr. Roger Hogan, who
designed and created the stained glass windows, altar, ambo and tabernacle for the Chapel.
The original Chapel was never dedicated to a Saint. Our Bishop, Most Reverend John T. Steinbock,
in a letter dated April 27, 2009, wrote he is in agreement with our request that the Student Chapel be
“formally named in honor of St. Dominic, in memory of the Dominican Sisters who served so long at
Garces and other schools in the Diocese.” The Dominican Sisters taught at St. Francis High School,
predecessor to Garces, then with and following the Christian Brothers at Garces. They also taught at St.
Francis and Our Lady of Perpetual Help grammar schools.
As a Catholic college preparatory school, it is imperative that we provide our students with a place of worship, a place to help in their spiritual growth, a place where they can take time from their academics and extracurricular activities to focus on what is truly the core of our
school’s existence, the importance of faith in God. Each week, priests from our area will celebrate Mass for 200 students in the Chapel,
allowing over a month’s time every student the opportunity for a small group celebration of the Liturgy.
We are grateful to the many individuals who have helped in this endeavor. When Garces Memorial became the beneficiary of The Jimmie
and Marjorie Icardo Trust, the Icardo family was pleased to know the funds were earmarked for this important project. We would also like
to thank the Salvucci family and the many individuals who have also financially supported this endeavor. Complimenting the Student Chapel and immediately to its south will soon be completed the renovation of Our Lady’s Grotto and placement of the Stations of the Cross.
We thank the many donors and volunteers who will make possible this last addition to the spiritual needs of our students.
Over the last year we have addressed the academic and spiritual needs of our students with the completion of Phase I of the Garces vision:
the Cerro Science Building, the Student Chapel, and Our Lady’s Grotto. The focus of our efforts is now on the completion of Phase II:
an Aquatics Center, Tennis Complex and a Faculty Endowment. We are pleased with the progress the school’s leadership and volunteer
campaign cabinet has made. Everyone involved, volunteers and benefactors alike should be proud of the progress made during the Fund
the Future campaign. It is well known that even in tough economic times people will donate to causes they treasure, if they are asked. The
proof of this fact is evident at Garces: nearly $4 million of the $6.5 million goal has been pledged for Phase II. We will continue to report
on the progress of these projects in the next issue.
Please join us in also recognizing those alumni who are serving this great country of ours as members of the United States armed forces,
some of whom are highlighted in this issue of Mission. The Garces Memorial community will continue to pray for you.
