CLUB
NEWS
Dear Members,
We hope you are having a wonderful summer. The Board,
Committees and Staff are working diligently during the remaining
summer months to finalize plans for the upcoming season. We look
forward to offering many new and innovative activities, and dining
options as well as exciting golf, tennis and fitness offerings.
The 2016-2017 fiscal year budget process is now under way
and will be presented to the Budget and Finance Committee in
September, with recommendations from the committee being
forwarded to the Board of Governors for approval.
Ralph Winer
We continue to report great news on the membership sales and
bog president
real estate fronts. From November 1, 2015 through June 28, 2016,
we have closed or have under contract to close 69 units. Although
this number is approximately 18 units less than the previous year’s
record setting volume, this is still a strong number compared to
prior years and a number that has generated $1,732,500 in new
member fees and assessments, which will be utilized in the 20162017 fiscal year capital budget. The great news about membership
sales and real estate is that property values are continuing to
improve. Members are investing into their properties through
Kraig Spina
renovations, and as a result, nearly every single floor plan has seen
general
an increase in average sales price compared to the prior year.
manager
The Phase II Healthy Lifestyle renovation project, which
will encompass improvements to the Fitness Center and Pool,
is progressing as planned. We will have a very important meeting with our professional
consultant team in July, and expect to distribute a comprehensive member information
brochure later this summer.
At the Board of Governors orientation, the Board set several strategic goals in order to
ensure that the club continues to operate in the best interest of our membership. As a result
of these strategic goals, the Board and Management team have been working together to
update several programs at the club. The Renovator Program received a significant overhaul
and a new committee has been formed to review renovator applications and periodically
check in on these properties. In an effort to create community-wide modernization, design
control guidelines have been reintroduced in order to implement a process ensuring
compliance with the Declaration of Protective Covenants. Members will be receiving
information about the new design control request process very soon.
The annual club closure will be taking place from August 1-8, 2016. During this time,
multiple projects will be completed throughout the club to maintain the infrastructure and
facilities within your club. Please review the operating information for this week on page 3.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we complete these critical projects
that would otherwise create a great disruption to member service.
This summer, Gleneagles hosted a college student completing an internship for college
credit. Kelly Christiansen is a Hospitality Management student at Ole Miss University and
she has gained valuable experience in all elements of country club operations through her
time at Gleneagles. We wish Kelly the best as she returns to Ole Miss in late August!
We send our best wishes for an enjoyable summer and we look forward to seeing you
around the Club!
Respectfully yours,
Ralph Winer, President
Kraig Spina, General Manager

SUMMER
MAINTENANCE
SCHEDULE
Victory Course closed
July 18 - August 28
October 3 - October 9
Legends Course closed
August 29 - October 2
Hello from the golf staff! We hope everyone is having a great
summer – wherever you may be! It has certainly been great
down here at Gleneagles. The weather, although warm, has
been beautiful, and the golf courses are recovering well as they
move through the summer maintenance program.
The gentlemen have been busy playing South County
matches and as in the past, they are playing very strong. The
ladies have been playing in their league play with the Southeast
PGA Pro Ladies and the South Palm League. The ladies also
have a new league called Par-T – and you guessed it, it is all
about fun!
The bag room will look great with our new bag racks, just in
time for a new season. We have been busy with new schedules
and summer projects to improve many outdoor elements
including the bag stands and shoe cleaners. We would like to
thank the members who took their golf bags out of storage for
the bag room renovation, and remind everyone else that you
may still pick up your bag before July 25. If you have already left
for the summer or cannot pick up your bag, it is not a problem.
We just want to ensure a good experience for our members who
are here and will be playing, and we feel the best way to do that
is by servicing your bags to and from your vehicle while the bag
room is under construction.

The golf courses are looking excellent with our summer
maintenance program moving along. They will be ready for a
strong season. Enjoy the rest of your summer because the new
season of 2016-2017 is right around the corner! This season will
be bigger and better than ever! If you need anything please give
us a call or come see us – we will even buy the coffee!

PRO GOLF TIP

PRACTICE TIME
Practicing your game in the summer
months is critical to ensuring you
stay conditioned for a busy fall and
winter golf season, but when it is
really warm out you may find yourself
getting tired faster. Remember to
pace yourself while you are hitting
balls, break up the practice session
with some putting, chipping, and
take a break in between swings.
Remember, there is always tomorrow,
and a little bit of practice goes a long
way! If you are feeling fatigue, it is
time to stop. When a person gets
tired and keeps hitting balls, it will
only get worse because the muscles
are not going to do what you want
them to do. Remember to drink
water, pace yourself and make it fun,
not a job! Always keep soft hands
and finish the swing! – Joe

PRO TENNIS TIP
THE MENTAL BELIEF
When playing a match it is not
uncommon to see one team come
out of the blocks hot and power
through an opponent, winning a
quick set. Besides playing your
game as hard as you can and
being competitive in your actions,
remember to never give up on
yourself mentally. A winner knows
how to hang in a match and wait
for turning points. It could be a
long rally on a big point, winning
a long game after several deuces,
the inevitable let down by your
opponent after an easy first set
victory or a game of four straight
winners. You never know how your
opponent will handle adversity if the
momentum switches, so always be
positive and consistent in your head
with your belief that you can win
any match. – Mike
The Tennis Facility has undergone major improvements
this summer with all 21 courts receiving new fence poles and
fabric. The average life of a chain link fence is 15 – 20 years,
so we did very well with this original fence. The new fence is
powder coated for durability and a beautiful look. The angles
of the internal divider fence have been changed to a bias or
angled cut, replacing the square design. The golf ball barrier
net along the east side has been replaced and is firmly attached
to the fence. Twelve state of the art 1000 watt metal halide lights
have been installed on the Stadium Court, for professional-level
lighting. It is fun and cool to play at night. Members may turn
the lights on at night by flipping the light switch located on the
east side of the Pro Shop building adjacent to court #2. The
lights will automatically shut off at 10:00 pm, but please turn
them out when you complete your night game. Still to come
this summer will be the pressure cleaning and sealing of all
brick walkways and refurbishment of the Tennis Pro Shop.
Due to increased summer activity, the Tennis Pro Shop will
now be open Mondays 7:30 - 11:30 am. The courts are open and
guests are welcome up to 11:30 am.
The core Pickleball players are not dissuaded by the summer
heat. We are on the courts and having a great time. Any tennis
members who have not tried this fun game and would like an
orientation may call Tennis Director, Mike Puc who will be
happy to take you out and show you the ropes. Pickleball games
will be part of the Tennis Social Calendar in the fall with players
integrated into all our offerings. Two sports are better than one,
and it is here in your own backyard.
The Labor Day Tennis Mixer is scheduled for Sunday,
September 4. A continental breakfast for all attendees will be
available 8:30 - 9:30 am, whether or not you will be playing in the
round robin. The round robin of men’s, women’s, and mixed
doubles will begin at 9:30 am, followed by smoothies on the
patio at 11:00 am. Email [email protected] to join us.

Osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis, is an agerelated ‘wear and tear’ disease of the joints that causes stiffness,
pain and mild inflammation. The knee is the most commonly
affected joint. In fact, almost half of the population will have
knee pain due to osteoarthritis by age 85.
Considering how common osteoarthritis of the knee is,
news of a recent study published in Arthritis and Rheumatism
found that participants with knee osteoarthritis who practiced
Tai Chi twice a week had less pain and better physical function
compared with other stretching and wellness programs. In this
study, the Tai Chi classes lasted 12 weeks, but the improvements
were sustained a year later. These participants also reported less
depression and greater well-being.
Tai Chi improves muscle strength and coordination, which
leads to better joint stability. In addition, with its gentle,
fluid movements and deep diaphragmatic breathing, Tai Chi
promotes mental calmness, which may help break the cycle of
arthritis pain.
Prior trials had found that Tai Chi can help treat conditions
like rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia as well. And don’t
forget about balance. If you stay consistent with your Tai Chi
practice, you will find your balance will greatly improve.
If you decide to try Tai Chi, our class is held every Monday
from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. We hope to see you there!

At the Bridge Table by marty tolep
The best of contracts may be upset by an enemy ruff, but
sometimes it is possible for the declarer to take countermeasures.
Here, on the right, is an example from a team game.
West led the king of diamonds which east overtook with the
ace to return the 8 of clubs. How should south plan the play?
At one table the declarer saw nothing better than to try and
slip past the ace of trumps. He won the club switch in dummy
and played the 2 of spades, but east was not tempted to play low.
He won the ace of spades, put his partner in with the queen of
diamonds and received a club ruff to put the contract 1 down.
At another table the declarer diagnosed the danger correctly
and came up with a neat counter. Before touching trumps he
played out the ace, king and 2 of hearts discarding the jack of
diamonds from the table. East had to win the trick and since he
was unable to pass the lead to his partner the contract was safe.
South was lucky in that west was unable to win the third
round of hearts, but he earned his luck by seizing his chance.
Anything is better than sitting back and meekly waiting for
the ruff. This type of play, where the declarer escapes from a
threatened ruff by cutting the enemy communications is called
the scissors coup.
Bottom Line: Look out for a chance to use the scissors coup
when an enemy ruff is threatened.

ABSENTEE BALLOT
REQUEST FORMS
Make sure your vote
counts! The General
Election will be held on
November 8, 2016. For
more information about
absentee ballots, please
contact Shirley Jacobs at
495-5043 or visit
pbcelections.org.
These independent forums are facilitated by
Gleneagles members. Gleneagles provides a
space for conducting meetings, however, the
programs are independent from the club.
Renew Your Dues
It’s almost September.
Where did the summer
go? Reminder: Computer Club Membership renewals are due
each year on September 1. Family dues are only $20.00 per year.
Your September Country Club mailing will have a membership
renewal form, please update your information, mark your areas
of interest, and return with your check to the Computer Club
7667 Victory Lane, Delray Beach, FL 33446 or leave at the
Concierge Desk. Your support makes it possible for the club to
provide the latest new equipment for your use when you attend
any workshops or help days.
The computer club has been busy planning new workshops,
meeting programs, and help days, all designed to make your
computer, digital device or tablet experience more enjoyable.
Watch our newly updated website http://Gleneaglescomputer.org for
details about our meetings beginning October 17, and workshop
schedule beginning October 31. Our website is also where
members can make appointments for individual help sessions as
well as workshops and view schedules and program information.
On May 12, we were saddened to receive information of the
passing of our very dear friend, associate and past President
Peter Hans. Peter had been in intensive care for a long period
of time and was showing signs of improvement. Peter made a
considerable contribution to the computer club and will be
missed by all here in Gleneagles.
Your computer club continues to operate on a “volunteer” basis
and needs your support. We invite you to join us to assist others. No
experience required. We have many functions, some working with
members and devices, and others simply administrative. Taking a
few minutes to help a neighbor can be very rewarding.

ACTIVITIES & EVENTS
Thank you
Thank you to the many members who
supported our Marathon Golf Team to benefit
local children’s charities through the local
chapter of the Club Managers Association of
America (CMAA). Together, we raised nearly
$7,000 for local children's charities as Regan,
Jeff, Paul, and Matt together played 355
holes! Congratulations to Joan Lowe-Cohen
for winning the Gleneagles swag bag and to
Marvin Riibner for winning the Ocean Reef
vacation! As part of Gleneagles support of
CMAA charities, two teams from Gleneagles
participated in the charity fundraiser at Boca
West on June 6, 2016.
