Council Corner
Message From the Board- Ron Botello, Board Chairman
RAIN!! I can almost hear our golf courses gurgling as they soak up the much needed rain that we’ve received these past few
days. The timing couldn’t be much better as our courses recover from a very bad winter and drought conditions, as we enter
the first days of June. There are exciting things happening at our club: The tennis Grand Slam member guest was awesome
and will be followed by The Sunburst, the first
week of June, which is our major golf member
guest event and our membership drive continues
to move forward. The upgrade of the bathrooms in the main clubhouse is almost done and
we are now shooting for upgrading the main bar area, which hopefully will be followed by the last phase, the upgrade of the 19 th hole.
A big thanks goes out to those members who have sponsored their
friends and associates to join. I specifically would like to recognize
Tony Reyes who sponsored four new members. With the pool
opening, the courses improving, our tennis programs flourishing, the
adding of new menu items, and activities for all ages, these are exciting times for our club. I’ve had members reach out to me to see
how they can get involved by joining a committee.
Volunteers are always welcomed and the more of you that get involved the stronger our push to excellence will be. Hopefully you
will be joining me later this year for a beverage at the new 19 th hole.
Message From the Manager–
Sergio Salazar, General Manager
Well, it was a strange winter and a colder spring
than normal but it appears that summer has finally snuck up on us. I can’t remember a colder
winter in Texas and I can’t ever remember such a
prolonged spring and dreary Memorial Day. The
recent warm nights and recent rains has made a
huge difference in our golf course conditions and hopefully everybody
will start converging on our golf courses, tennis courts and all the
events that we have to offer at the club this summer.
The past few weeks has slowed down our membership momentum but
nowhere near what many would expect. Thanks to our loyal members,
we are creeping in our membership goal to renovate the main lounge
and even the reinvention of our 19th hole/ Ivy room. At this point we
are plus 26 golf members. By reaching our first goal of 20 net golf
members, we began working on the bathrooms in the main clubhouse.
That project is currently underway. Once we reach 35 net members we
will reach our second goal of remodeling the main lounge and finally
when we reach 55 net members we will be able to remodel the 19 th
hole. We are almost halfway there with what are historically our two
best months ahead of us.
If you have anybody that you would like to consider for membership
please let Deborah Routon or myself know. Not only will you be helping the club improve but you will also have a brick with your name
permanently displayed on a wall of the new 19th hole. I also promise
that once the new 19th hole is remodeled and open I will buy Every
sponsoring Member your first drink for the first month that it is open.
Thank you for your support and thank you all for being a member at
The Club At Sonterra.

Golf News- Jeff Hunter, Director of Golf
This is one of the most exciting times to be a member
of Sonterra. Both golf courses are rounding into
shape, the schedule is full of great events, and the kids
are out for the summer. OK two out of three!
Our golf calendar continues to fill up with all things
golf and to that end, we have hired a new golf professional, Sean Etheridge, to help with lessons. Sean will
focus on clinics for juniors, women, tennis players that
want to learn the game, family clinics, or just about
any clinic you can think of. A schedule of clinics will
be emailed and posted shortly, and we also invite you to create your own
with friends or family. Gaston is continuing his drop in clinics, and he
too will be expanding the clinic structure. We are planning clinics for
those that are just beginning and more intense clinics for those that are
really wanting to improve. Along with his golf skills, Sean is also TPI
certified to teach exercise and stretching that can be golf specific.
As we get into the summer heat, please help us. Fill those divots, fix
those ball marks and please pay attention to pairing up in carts and
where we are driving those carts. The golf course deserves our respect.

Despite the slow start this year, with many Wednesday playdays
cancelled due to weather, the SWGA is rolling along with some great
Spring tournaments and our guest day to be held June 25th. Our
North and South teams are doing well in city wide competition which
includes both net and gross scores. These scores are compiled
throughout the year with the final competition in the Fall. The Hill
Country Stableford Cup Teams are also busy with tournaments at the
participating clubs vying for the honor of bringing the trophy to their
home club.

And finally, just a quick tip from the pros: When you practice, always
start with a short iron and work your way up to your hybrids and
your woods. Your muscles and back are not ready to make those
long swings you have with woods. Get loosened up first by stretching and swing the short clubs at the start of your practice. It will
make your practice more productive and your body will like you better too! Come join us on Wednesdays for some fun golf and as always, keep it moving out there!

our most popular and member friendly introductory events. Please call the golf

Did you know that you can come out with your children,
under the age of 16, Any day after 2PM and play the south course without paying
cart fees for the kids?? We encourage all families to take advantage of this great
way to spend time together. We have developed a “kidz kard” score card and
beginning the first week in May, will cut 6 inch holes on the South Course Front

On the Greens–
Donny Latham, Golf Course Superintendent
With June finally here and both courses really growing stronger by the day, I wanted to take a moment to look back at this
really tough winter and discuss some things that we learned. First of all, Emerald Bermuda grass (South Course putting
greens) is very susceptible to cold weather. We clearly began a decline in putting green quality mid-January. This decline
continued through the first of May. As the Emerald broke dormancy in early February, the plant used all of its carbohydrate
reserves to fuel this flush of green up growth. Then with several more heavy frosts, the plant was, out of gas, so to speak to
continue growth. I saw a significant decline from February through April. Having this knowledge we will make adjustments
to our agronomic plans for Summer 2014 and going forward. Our plan is to overseed the South Course greens in early October with Poa trivialis. This overseed will serve many purposes. It will provide a growing medium that we will mow, roll,
walk, and play golf on throughout the colder months of November-April. Also, we will be buying covers for all South
Greens. These covers will be an insurance policy, if we need them, we will have them. If nighttime temperatures drop into
the low 30’s for an extended period of time, we will cover ALL South greens. This will help protect the underlying Emerald Bermuda grass.
Also, going into overseed, we will allow the Emerald to grow a little taller which allows for even more carbohydrate reserves that the plant will
need to survive. This will result in slightly slower green speeds as the overseed is getting established, but sacrificing a tad slower greens that will
remain healthy and strong as it goes through the winter is a fair trade off to repeating the spring we have had this year.
The MiniVerde (North Course putting greens) survived this winter significantly better than our South Course. However, there were still
areas that thinned out over the course of the colder months. Our walk-up areas really thinned the most. If you think about that statement, it
makes sense. We are walking on a plant that is not recovering, growing or able to repair the damage caused by the mechanical degradation of
mowers, spikes or rollers. We will alter the areas that you can enter the green with the use of stake and rope. If we rope an area off, I would ask
that you walk around the ropes and enter the green from a different direction. We also will raise the height of cut earlier and change our fertility
in the fall. This will be paramount to having a strong healthy plant all winter long. We are always learning, no one knows everything. I know I
have learned a great deal about each golf course this winter and how each green (North and South) require different things and different inputs.
I am excited to see The Club at Sonterra growing grass again and I look forward to a warm summer. Thank You ALL for Being A Member!

Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis
We are ripping the pages off our desk calendars at an
alarming speed. It seems like just yesterday we were
having our first meeting for the Member Guest Tournament and now we are preparing for our summer programs. There are meetings for the 4th of July club activities and preparation for our next after school junior
tennis academy. I need to slow down and enjoy the
moment.
The Member-Guest Tournament was again a huge success from beginning to end. I would like to thank the
Member-Guest committee for their hard work and for
again reaching our goal of $10,000.00 to donate to Any
Baby Can. The tennis, decorations, goody bags and
entertainment was over the top. The committee again
had that golden touch and made this event a WOW
from start to finish. Thanks to all the players who participated, the member sponsors and the members who came and contributed in our raffle and silent auction.
This is our 7th year of achieving this goal and hats off to a super group of members and volunteers that help us get there.
Committee:
Wendy Hammond (chairlady), Melissa Cliver, Susan Crouch, Mary Lynn Gayler,
Joanne Johnson, Linda Walsdorf, Monica Kuehlem, Chantal Smith, Kim Powers,

your emails and check out the bulletin board for activities that are coming up.
Deadlines are looming and time flies by quickly –so stay in touch with the pro
shop for all the league updates, registrations and team contacts.
