Words, Words And More Words!

“Back in the day,” when one really
did not know, or was unsure of the meaning of a word or phrase they might have
gone to the Encyclopedia Britannica to
find the definition or other information
about the subject. Others might have consulted a dictionary which was then and can
still be found today in all shapes and sizes
that range from those that fit in a pocket to
those that require a special stand to
accommodate them (as an example, the
Oxford English Dictionary). These days
the answer can usually be found by simply
“Googling it” and the outcome of this
activity, besides being informative, can
also be quite entertaining.
Words are an essential part of our
daily interactions with others but as you
examine some words you may find you
are left with more questions than answers.
While you can confirm that the word
‘understand’ means that you comprehend
the intended meaning of something, you
may be left wondering, first of all, what
‘standing’ has to do with ‘comprehension’
and secondly, if you were to experience
the opposite situation and did not comprehend something, does that mean you
‘overstand’ it or ‘undersit’ it?
While looking in dictionaries for
the meaning of the word ‘yawn’ most
sources agree that it can be well defined as
a reflex act of opening one's mouth wide
and inhaling deeply due to tiredness or
boredom. Others, however, have
described ‘yawn’ as an honest opinion
openly expressed or the only time a husband actually gets to open his mouth. And,
in the same vein, you will find that the
accepted definition for a ‘split second’ is a
fractional part of a second, or an extremely small amount of time. But a good example of a split second would be the amount
of time between the traffic light turning
green and the driver behind you honking
the horn.
Some other entertaining explanations of words with which we may be
familiar include: ‘overstuffed recliner’ –
just Mom’s opinion of Dad; ‘taxidermist’
– a cab driver who gets under your skin;
‘handkerchief’ – cold storage; ‘father’ – a
banker provided by nature; ‘eternity’ – the
last two minutes of a ball game; ‘committee’ – a body that keeps minutes and
wastes hours; ‘miser‘ - a person who lives
poor so he can die rich; ‘professor’ –
someone who talks in someone else’s
sleep; ‘quiet’ - a state of household serenity that occurs before the birth of the first
child and returns when the last child goes
off to college; ‘seamstress’ – a 200 lb. person in a size 6 outfit; ‘hearsay’ – what
children do when anyone utters a dirty
word; ‘paradox’ – two physicians; ‘inflation’ – cutting money in half without
affecting the paper; ‘refrigerator’ – combination art gallery and air conditioning for
the kitchen; ‘tomorrow’ – one of the greatest labor saving devices of today; ‘zucchini’ - vegetable which can be baked,
boiled, fried or steamed before your kids
refuse to eat it; ‘sterilize’ – what you do to
your first child’s pacifier by boiling and
your second child’s by blowing on it;
‘withdrawal’ – removing money from a
Southern bank; and ‘primate’ – removing
one’s husband from in front of the TV.
There are also some pretty “odd”
words out there that you would usually not
find in general conversations, but you may
be familiar with, words like ‘bumbershoot’ - an umbrella; ‘malarkey’ or ‘gobbledygook’ - nonsense and ‘comeuppance’
- just rewards or desserts, and how about
‘discombobulate’ - to confuse? Did you,
however, know that when your stomach
rumbles it is known as ‘borborygm’ and if
one tries to tell your fortune from your
stomach rumblings it is known as ‘gastromancy?’ You might appreciate some of the
more obscure odd words like ’snollygoster’ – that is a person who cannot be
trusted and a ‘gaberlunzie’ who is a wandering beggar. Someone who is talkative
or loquacious is said to have ‘logorrhea’
and someone who considers himself to be
pretty high and mighty is called a ‘panjandrum.’ Those who tend to make a mountain out of a molehill are said to use ‘batrachomyomachy’; trying to turn counterclockwise is going ‘widdershins’ and
‘callpygian’ means having an attractive
rear end, better known as “nice buns.” You
can try using some of those words in your
next conversation!
There are also the Oxymora which
can also be very interesting as they usually consist of two words, that together present conflicting ideas, yet they readily slip
into our daily conversations. Probably the
oxymoron quoted most often is ‘jumbo
shrimp’ but we in the real estate industry
may recognize things like: it is under
‘flood control’; it is just a ‘little lot’; the
property has ‘real potential’; next door we
have an ‘occupied space’; I work from a
‘home office’; it is close to the ‘homeless
shelter’; I am holding an ‘open house’; the
house is ‘partially completed’; the game
room is on the ‘top floor’; there is a
‘raised sink’ in the utility room; it has a
beautiful ‘rock garden’; there is a ‘studio
apartment’ for rent; the lot has a ‘mobile
home’ on it and my number is ‘toll free’.
How often have you said to someone,
‘Don’t do’ that or it’s ‘far closer’ than we
thought, or that’s ‘old news’ or ‘oddly
familiar’. You might also find it noteworthy that there are one word oxymora: like
‘houseboat’; ‘strawberry’; ‘everyone’;
‘nevermore’; ‘backside’ and ‘supernatural’ as examples.
Then we wouldn’t want to forget
the pesky little Onomatopoeia words
which are those associated with the sound
they represent. There is something to
appreciate about the ‘sizzle’ of a steak
cooking on the grill or the ‘giggle’ of a
child having fun. We hope never to hear a
‘screech’ or a ‘crash’ while we are out on
the road but probably would enjoy a
‘splash’ into the pool in summer time. In
most cases the ‘purr’, ‘meow’, ‘bark’ or
‘chirp’ emanating from our pets would be
welcome, however, the ‘drip’ from the
water faucet or the shower head may not
bode well.
And finally, for now, there are the
Anagrams - those words or word phrases

in which the letters can be rearranged into
a relatively decent reference to the original
words, for example: A Decimal Point =
I'm A Dot In Place; Snooze Alarms = Alas!
No More Z's; Eleven plus two = Twelve
plus one; Dormitory = Dirty Room; The

Morse Code = Here Come Dots;
Desperation = A Rope Ends It and lastly
George Bush = He bugs Gore.
Though we have looked at some
unusual definitions, some odd words,
Oxymora, Onomatopoeia and Anagrams,
we have only touched the well known “tip
of the iceberg” when it comes to the subject of words and their usage. I would
hope that you now appreciate that there is
also an entertaining side to the words and
phrases in the English language.

The Programs Just Keep
Getting Better
The Year has gotten off to a
good start! To date we have held
three Business Resource Meetings
and have traveled to Austin for the
TAR Winter Meetings.
The January program was
“Making the Most of Your
Membership”. Instead of a speaker,
we had our Executive Board and
Committee Chairs lead a network
focused meeting that helped us get
to know one another better and to
learn how to use all the tools at our
disposal within the WCR framework. It is amazing that so many
of the resources available to us as
professionals are under-utilized.

In February the program, “For
the love of our city” was led by
Jennifer Harms, Vice-President of
Economic Development for the San
Antonio Chamber of Commerce.
She shared with us what they have
been working on, including initiatives in the Aerospace, Health Care,
Bioscience, Hospitality and
Tourism, Manufacturing and Air
Service industries. The more you
are in the know about the growth
of our city, the more you can direct
your business objectives.
The following day we caravanned to Austin for the TAR
Winter Meetings and attended our
Texas WCR Chapter Meetings, the
YPN-WCR Casino Night supporting TREPAC and the Awards
Luncheon. Elizabeth Lopez, our
Treasurer took home a Past
President’s scholarship that she can
use to further her educational
objectives. It is amazing how many
TAR Leaders have WCR on their
resume! Remember, you saw it here
first: the WCR Texas State
Orientation will be held in San
Antonio this year from September
29th through October 2nd so save
the dates now. Some activities are
planned for downtown, the Pearl
Brewery and for Mexican food at
La Posada del Rey.
In March, in addition to an all
new caterer and plenty of food
(inside joke for those who were
there January and February), we
enjoyed a presentation by
Stephanie Scheller, #1 bestselling
author of the book “Friend Power:
How the Friends You Choose Can
Change Your Life.” She spoke on
Lead Generation Simplified!
And in March, we also welcomed Old Republic Home
Protection as our newest WCR San
Antonio Strategic Partner. Current

Real Estate Schools Now Required
to Check Photo IDs for Classes
The Texas Real Estate
Commission is now requiring all
schools to check photo IDs to
ensure the correct person is
attending a given class. When
you present your ID for a class
at the Real Estate School at
SABOR, your picture will be
compared to your face and your
name will be compared to the
registration list. Consider it similar to requiring buyers and sellers to show photo ID when closing on a home.
I know we’ve all been in
situations in which we were at a
store or other business, were
asked to show a photo ID and
when we did, the person asking
didn’t even look at it. Rest
assured, that will not be the
case at The Real Estate School at
SABOR. We want to be certain if
we are asking you to take the
time to pull out your ID, we are
giving you the courtesy of
checking it.
The Real Estate School at
SABOR will make this new
process as painless as possible
while still following the procedure. Most people carry ID for
driving purposes so performing
the task of showing the card to
someone should be easy.
Please be patient with us if
you are attending a class with a
large number of people because
the sign-in duty may take a few
seconds longer.

No Bake Walnut Cookies
(Grain Free and Gluten Free )
Ingredients:
1 cup walnuts
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
2 tbsp raw honey
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt

Directions:
Add walnuts to food processor and blend until finely ground. Add in the
remaining ingredients and blend until a dough forms, about a minute.
Turn out the dough onto a piece of parchment paper. Using your hands,
roll pieces of dough into small balls, about 1 inch around and space out
on parchment paper. After all the balls are formed, press down on each
ball to form a flat cookie. Place in freezer for at least 30 minutes before
serving. Store in airtight container in the freezer.

Multiple Awards for RE/MAX North-San Antonio at State Convention

received many accolades at the
recent 2016 RE/MAX of Texas
Statewide
Convention.
Most
notably, Owner Kate Keating was
named the 2015 Broker/Owner of
the Year and the office as a whole
was awarded the #1 Selling Volume
Office for San Antonio.
In 1985, Kate Keating opened
her first RE/MAX office in
Baytown, Texas. She moved to San
Antonio, Texas in 1999 and has
been the Broker/Owner of RE/MAX
North-San Antonio for 16 years.
Kate was selected from over
250 independently owned RE/MAX
offices in Texas and is one of a
small number of Brokers to earn
this distinction nationwide. Kate
also earned this award in 2008 and
2013.
In addition, RE/MAX NorthSan Antonio’s team, The Levi
Rodgers Group was named the #10
team in Texas, earning a Diamond
Level Production Award for their
year-end production. The Diamond
award is given annually to associates in the 5,000 member statewide
RE/MAX network who generate at
least $1 million in commissions
each year.
"Levi," says Owner Kate
Keating, "is a force. He has only
had his Texas real estate license for
four years, and he only started
forming his Team less than two
years ago. From the first Team
member, he has grown his Team to
nine licensees and 4 unlicensed
staff members.
"Levi was an Army Green
Beret;
he
was
wounded
in
Afghanistan, woke up at BAMC in
San Antonio where he was being put
back together. He suffered severe
burns, multiple broken bones,
endured skin grafts, and spent
months in the hospital. His wife
and two sons were in temporary
housing donated by Homes Fit for
Heroes, so they would be able to
visit Levi on a daily basis.”
"The Rodgers Family grew to
love San Antonio during Levi's
rehabilitation, so they purchased a
home in Helotes and Levi started
real estate classes. The rest is history,” said Keating. "With all of the
PTSD problems associated with our
military men and women, Levi said
that his goal is to show other
wounded warriors that "if I can do
it, they can do it."
