Our Parish News
Parish Ministry Fair
next weekend in the Parish Hall:
The Ministry Fair will take place
next weekend, August 20th and 21st
after each Mass. Please come to the Parish Hall to
view the many different Ministries that our Parish
has to offer. Get involved and share your gifts and
talents with the parish. You will be amazed at all
of the Ministries we have to offer you and your
children. This is where your children can sign up
to be Altar Servers and get involved in Youth
Group. This is where you sign up for Religious
Education Classes for children and adults alike.
Come join one of our choirs, become an usher,
help feed the poor, or join the Knights of Columbus. We have something to offer every person.
People who get involved in their parish become
dynamic and engaged Catholics. Our world needs
more dynamic Catholics. All of the positions for
unengaged Catholics have been taken. So come get
involved in your Parish! We need your gifts and
talents. Let them shine before the Lord.

Adult Catechists Needed for
Sunday Religious Education
Classes this Fall
Dear Holy Spirit Parishioners, did you know that we
currently have over 650 children enrolled in our Sunday Religious Education Classes? And that number
grows larger every year. As a parish we have a great
responsibility to hand the Catholic Faith down to the
children. They are facing a world that is growing
more and more secular. Won’t you come forward to
help teach the children of our parish; giving one hour
of your time each week for their sakes? Please consider becoming a Catechist for the 2016-2017 school
year. We are in need of Teachers and Assistant
Teachers in various grades: we need Lead Teachers
in Grades 3,4, and 6. We are in need of Assistant
Teachers in Pre-School age 4, Grade 1, Grade 3,
Grade 4, and Grade 6. Please contact Tracy Finke by
emailing [email protected] or by calling the
Religious Education Office at 256-881-0345.
Please join us for the next Knights
of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary
meeting. All Catholic women are
welcome! We’ll meet in rooms A/B
on Tuesday 8/16 at 7 PM. Help us
finalize details for our next event—
a Bunco Night Fundraiser to benefit Hospice.
3
Aug. 18 (Thur.) A Pro Life Rosary is offer ed the
third Thursday of each month after the Noon Mass.
Please join us for a few minutes to pray for the sanctity of life in our nation and the world this Thursday.

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
August 15
All the feast days of Mary mark the great mysteries of her life and her part in the
work of redemption. The central mystery of her life and person is her divine motherhood, but her whole being throbbed with divine life from the very beginning, readying her for the exalted role of mother of the Savior. The Assumption completes
God’s work in her since it was not fitting that the flesh that had given life to God
himself should ever undergo corruption. This feast has a double object: (1) the happy departure of Mary from this life; (2) the assumption of her body into heaven. It is
the principal feast of the Blessed Virgin. The Assumption is God’s crowning of His
work as Mary ends her earthly life and enters eternity. The feast turns our eyes in
that direction, where we will follow when our earthly life is over.
The feast days of the Church are not just the commemoration of historical events; they do not look only to the
past. They look to the present and to the future and give us an insight into our own relationship with God.
The Assumption looks to eternity and gives us hope that we, too, will follow Our Lady when our life is ended.
The prayer for the feast reads, “All powerful and ever-living God: You raised the sinless Virgin Mary, mother
of your Son, body and soul, to the glory of heaven. May we see heaven as our final goal and come to share
her glory.”
- Fr. Clifford Stevens, Catholic Heritage
First, I am proud to inform you that the efforts of a number of people both on and outside the Haiti committee have produced a brand new Haiti website. The link to the site
is the same, http://holyspirithaitimission.org , but the look is entirely new. We are very proud of this
accomplishment which was done in just 20 days from the initiation point. We invite you to go on the
site and learn more about what we do. It is quite an adventure. We are seeking any and all feedback
and interest, so your comments are most welcome. The site is still undergoing some changes over the
next months but for now it is definitely public presentable.
Secondly, we sent out sponsorship invitations to all those who sponsored orphans at NDC last year. If
you sponsored an orphan and did not get an email or letter and you want to sponsor again this year
please let us know. The remaining girls’ pictures will be on the board during the Ministry Fair, but
you don’t have to wait until then. We have 72 young people to sponsor this year and a dozen are new
and have no sponsors. For years this has been a very successful program and we are about to see one
young lady graduate from 4 year university in 2017 and another entering four year university this
year. It is all because you care.
Third, and last, we have a mission scheduled on the books for October 18-25 to install our 22nd water
purification system. We still have two empty slots if you would like to go. The cost is about $1,200
and is borne by the missionary. It is tax deductible though. If you have never been - be prepared to be
changed for life. The trip requires you to be at least 18 years of age, have a passport and several
shots. See us if you are interested.

Adult Education Class Choices:
Thursday Night Adult Bible Study with Dr. Ken Muenstermann!
Join us in the church on Thursday nights starting on September 8th at 6:30 pm for an in-depth and passionately Catholic Bible Study taught by Dr. Ken Muenstermann. Ken taught the Book of Genesis last school year
and will be teaching the Book of Exodus this year. Ken has a unique ability to teach Catholic doctrine and morality straight from the pages of Scripture. The Bible comes to life when Ken teaches it and his passion for
Scripture is very contagious. Over 200 parishioners attended Ken’s Bible study on Genesis. All will attest to
its greatness. We are looking forward to the class on Exodus.
This class is available to everyone. All are welcome! If you did not take the class on Genesis, no worries!
Come take Exodus and you will love it!
Hearts A Fire Program – The ‘One Thing’ is Three
We will be offering the second year of the Hearts A Fire program, The ‘One Thing’ is Three starting
on Tuesday, September 13th. Two classes will be offered: one during the day at 1:00 pm and another in the
evening at 6:30 pm. This class is 10 weeks in length and will end the week before Thanksgiving.
Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, offers the perfect resource for those who desire sanctity and wisdom but
who are busy with life’s constant demands. The DVD and book will unlock the treasures of Catholicism in a
way that’s clear, concise, and compelling. You do not need to have completed any other Hearts A Fire program to sign up for this class.
Acts of the Apostles: (20 sessions)
Join renowned speaker, Jeff Cavins, as he guides you through a study of the Book of Acts. Acts of the
Apostles teaches how Christ's Kingdom on earth is empowered to carry out His work in the world. The book
of Acts shows the Church, enlivened by the Holy Spirit, teaching, preaching, healing, and restoring outcasts in
the same way that Jesus did on earth. The Acts of the Apostles provides an historic framework for understanding the rest of the New Testament. Paul’s letters in particular come alive in a new way when they are read
within the context of the Acts narrative. If you take this class, you will:
 See how the Gospel witness spread outward in waves, from Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria, and finally to
the ends of the earth.
 Share with the early Christians the joys and struggles of living the life of Christ, and learn how these apply
to us today.
 See how the Holy Spirit guided the apostles into Truth.
 Observe the way the Spirit-filled Church adapted to new cultures when proclaiming the Gospel.
 Watch the seeds of Church structure and authority take root, and see how conflicts were resolved even at
that early stage.
 See your place in Christ’s Church, and how you should live day-to-day as a disciple of Christ.
The cost is $30.00 for your class materials.
The Gospel of Luke: (18 sessions)
Join prolific author and speaker, Dr. Paul Thigpen and “Doors of Mercy” host Fr. Jeffrey Kirby, in exploring the Gospel of Luke. Featuring world-class video, shot on location in Rome and Assisi, as well as beautiful and full-color study materials, Luke is a Catholic Scripture Study like you’ve never seen before. Luke,
known as “The Gospel of Mercy,” is addressed to the Gentiles: all men and women seeking God. And it is
Luke that the Church draws from in a special way during this Extraordinary Jubilee Year. With Luke you will:
9
 Gain profound insights into the merciful Heart of God across 18-sessions.
 Uncover Christ’s life-changing Mercy through a deep examination of the Prodigal Son.
 Discover how the parables of the woman with the lost coin, the Good Samaritan, and the Lost Sheep
show the depths of Our Lord’s Mercy.
 Be deeply engaged by the state-of-the-art video shot on location in Rome and Assisi.
The cost is $40.00 for your full color class materials.
Catholicism: The Pivotal Players (7-14 sessions, cost TBD)
Bishop Robert Barron's CATHOLICISM series, an epic ten part documentary, took people around the
world and deep into the Catholic Faith. The series aired on PBS and has been seen by millions. But there is
still more of the story to tell. Bishop Barron is on a new journey to unlock the truth behind the Catholic
Church's most influential people. CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part film series that illumines six saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the
course of civilization.
 ST. FRANCIS The Reformer: Rebuild my Church! That’s the mission Christ gave to St. Francis and
it’s the perennial task of the Church in every age of its life. But how is the reform and renewal of the
Church to be accomplished? The life of St. Francis demonstrates that Christ intends the foundations of
true and lasting reform to be built on the solid rock that is the radical witness of the saints.
 ST. THOMAS AQUINAS The Theologian: The r elationship of faith and r eason is under intense
scrutiny in an age beholden to the competing claims of fundamentalism and secularism. So called “new
atheists” insist that the claims of religion amount to mere superstition, a retrograde holdover from a time
long ago. Others insist that the life of faith is a retreat into emotions and subjectivism. St. Thomas Aquinas anticipated these objections and trends and demonstrated that to believe is to think and that the life of
the mind is integral to life in Christ.
 BL. JOHN HENRY NEWMAN The Convert: Is there any truth in matters of religion? Should the
Church simply retreat in the face of the challenges of culture? John Henry Newman came into the
Church as a convert and used his prodigious intellectual gifts to help the Church better understand its
identity and mission and engage the challenges of a secular age.
 ST. CATHERINE of SIENA The Mystic: Is the physical world all there is? Is science the only path to
ascertaining truth? St. Catherine of Siena witnesses to a higher world beyond the material. Though the
fourteenth century mystic never studied theology, and never learned how to read or write, her life constitutes a powerful challenge to the flattened-out secularism of our time.
 G.K. CHESTERTON The Evangelist: How does one engage a culture that is befuddled by Christ and
suspicious of the Church? The life and witness of this nineteenth century literary convert shows that the
fundamental disposition of effective evangelization is joy, and life in Christ is a day-to-day encounter
with an abundant and surprising offer of grace.
 MICHELANGELO The Artist: The master of sculpture and painting is not a saint but serves as the
privileged representative of the creative potential engendered by the Catholic Faith. The Church professes that beauty is a route of access to God, and through humanity’s creative artistry we glimpse the power
and glory of the Lord.
EPIC: A Study of Church History
Presented by Steve Weidenkopf, this exciting 20-part series takes you through the major people,
places, and events that make up the history of the Catholic Church. See the glory of the Church founded by
Christ and understand where you fit into this Epic story.
In Epic you will:
 Learn about the major people, places, and events of the two-thousand years of Church history.
 Remember the 12 time periods of Church history using a unique color-coded system.
 Learn the true story of the Crusades.
 Understand the rationale for the medieval inquisitors
 Discover the revolutionary character of the Protestant Reformation.
 Discover the persecution of Christians in the 20th century.
 Learn about the workings of the Holy Spirit throughout Church history... and much more!
The cost is $25.00 for your class materials.

Have you ever been asked Catholic questions at work, on the ball field, or at family gatherings? Have you ever been
asked the reasons why Catholics do this
or that or why Catholics believe what they believe?
Most of us have been taught what we believe as
Catholics, but we have trouble explaining why we
believe it. Have you ever had trouble finding Catholic doctrine in the pages of Scripture? Would you
like to be able to help your children embrace the
Catholic Faith? By listening to Lighthouse CD’s,
Catholics learn the faith well and are able to explain
the reasons that we believe as we do. Catholics who

testimony recounts his family's difficult journey into Catholicism and the great
joy they experienced in finding the pearl of great price. $3

one of us has what he calls a "God-Sized Hole" within our own hearts. $3

CD: St. Maximillian Kolbe and the Problem of the Freemasonry In this
informative presentation, Dr. Mark Miravalle, professor of Theology and
Mariology at Franciscan University of Steubenville, uncovers the roots of
Freemasonry and explains why the Catholic Church has condemned it

CD: Blessed Pier Giorgio Man of the Beatitudes Born in 1901 in Turin,
Italy into a family of wealth and status, Pier Giorgio enjoyed good friends,
hiking and skiing, museums and music, and was involved in political action,
He found that deep prayer, service to the poor, and a passion for bringing
others to Christ led to a life of purpose, peace, and happiness. Pier Giorgio
died at the age of 24 on July 4, 1925. He was beatified on May 20, 1990 by
Pope John Paul II who referred to him as a "man of the beatitudes.” $3
Booklet: Corporal Works of Mercy Feeding the hungry and thirsty, clothing the naked, housing the homeless, visiting the imprisoned and the sick, and
burying the dead - Pope Francis wants us to stop and think again, especially
during the Year of Mercy. Are these things I can do, or are they for others to
get on with? What good do they do? Actions of mercy are often terribly ordinary and doable. Fr Atherton guides us through the spiritual and practical matters that love asks of all Christians.$2
Booklet: Is Jesus Really Present in the Eucharist? Statistics are reporting that over 70% of Catholics polled in America do not believe in the Real
Presence of the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist — a verifiable crisis of faith. Using
key sources from scripture and tradition, Bishop Michael Evans explains how
Jesus is present today when we celebrate the Mass. This highly readable and
accessible text is a must read for all Catholics seeking the proper answer to
this dire question. $2
Book: 7 Secrets of Divine Mercy In this compelling and timely book, bestselling author Vinny Flynn draws from Scripture, the teachings of the Church,
and the Diary of St. Faustina to reveal the heart of Divine Mercy. He offers an
invitation and a road map so that Divine Mercy, the overflow of love from the
Holy Trinity, can transform your life. $4
Book: 7 Secrets of Confession The understanding that many Catholics
have of the Sacrament of Confession is so limited and narrow in its focus that
it keeps them from discovering the real beauty and value of this Sacrament...
beauty and value that even a young child can understand if it's presented
properly. For too many Catholics, Confession is just a means to an end: cleaning us up from sin so we can receive Communion. But, as Pope Francis tells
us, Confession is much more than "going to the dry cleaner." It's "an encounter
with Jesus, who waits for us as we are." $4

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Seen any “undeserving poor” lately?
In George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion,
ne’er-do-well Alfred P. Doolittle laments, “It’s
always the same story: ‘You’re undeserving; so you can’t
have it.’ But my needs is as great as the most deserving
widow’s that ever got money out of six different charities
in one week for the death of the same husband. I don’t
need less than a deserving man: I need more.” Compassion is not compassion if it has to be “deserved.” A Christian owes mercy and leaves the judgment to God. Is there
a person, ethnic group, or race you think undeserving?
Then you’re not thinking like Jesus.
TODAY’S READINGS: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10; Hebrews 12:1-4; Luke 12:49-53 (120). “Persevere in
running the race, while keeping your eyes fixed
on Jesus.”
MONDAY, AUGUST 15
SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN
M ARY
Crowned in heaven, her feet firmly on earth
As with the feast of the Lord’s Ascension, Mary being taken to heaven evokes the image of heaven being up. But
Mary’s glory derives from her life on earth: her faith, her
trust in God even when confused, her love for her son,
her compassion for embarrassed wedding hosts, the horror of seeing her son crucified. Mary had her feet firmly on
the good earth, where we live. When we “Hail” her, she
responds, “Do whatever my son tells you,” and when we
do so, to paraphrase her son’s Sermon on the Mount, our
“reward in heaven will be great.”
TODAY’S READINGS: Vigil: 1 Chronicles 15:3-4, 1516; 16:1-2; 1 Corinthians 15:54b-57; Luke 11:2728 (621); Day: Revelation 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab;
1 Corinthians 15:20-27; Luke 1:39-56 (622). “Now
have salvation and power come, and the kingdom
of our God
and the authority of his Anointed One.”
TUESDAY, AUGUST 16
MEMORIAL OF STEPHEN OF HUNGARY
God works through imperfect vessels
Stephen of Hungary may be a saint, but he was no angel.
He was good to the church, it is true, firmly establishing
the faith in modern-day Hungry a millennium ago. However, the age was one of warfare, and Stephen engaged in
his fair share of it. Once he had eliminated his competition, he did usher in an era of relative peace, and Hungary became a preferred route for pilgrims traveling between
Europe and the Holy Land. Each age has its accomplishments—and its sins. Do the best you can to leave a legacy of good works.
TODAY’S READINGS: Ezekiel 28:1-10; Matthew
19:23-30 (420). “It is easier for a camel to pass
through the eye of a needle than for one who is
rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17
Where charity ends
“Charity begins at home.” Few of us doubt the wisdom
and the primary duty of taking care of our families, neighborhoods, and communities. But for many, the obligation
of charity can often appear to end at home as well. We
may be reluctant to put our funds at the disposal of another needy parish, or to assist someone else’s family with
our limited resources. But what if we took seriously the
human family as genuine sisters and brothers? When
home and family are expansive notions, then charity at
home goes a long, long way.
TODAY’S READINGS: Ezekiel 34:1-11; Matthew 20:1
-16 (421). “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who
have been pasturing themselves! Should not
shepherds, rather, pasture sheep?”
THURSDAY, AUGUST 18
For the love of money
It doesn’t take a spiritual genius to know that, as the Beatles put it, “money can’t buy me love.” Pope Francis uses
his most moving appeals to divert a consumer-obsessed
world from its vain pursuits: “Do not fall into the terrible
trap of thinking that life depends on money and that, in
comparison with money, anything else is devoid of value
or dignity. This is nothing but an illusion! We cannot take
money with us into the life beyond. Money does not bring
us happiness.” Do your choices today prove that you want
the kind of things that money just can’t buy?
TODAY’S READINGS: Ezekiel 36:23-28; Matthew
22:1-14 (422). “I will give you a new heart and
place a new spirit within you.”
FRIDAY, AUGUST 19
MEMORIAL OF JOHN EUDES, PRIEST
Embarrassed into holiness
John Eudes was drawn to many kinds of service: some
conventional, such as improving seminary education, and
some less so, such as easing the dire needs of prostitutes. But he needed a little prodding. Madeleine Lamy,
who had cared for several such women, one day challenged him to address the problem. “Where are you off to
now, John? To some church, I suppose, where you’ll
gaze at the images and think yourself pious. And all the
time what is really wanted of you is a decent house for
these poor creatures.” Red-faced but inspired, he began a
religious community to meet those needs. Sometimes we
have to be embarrassed into holiness!
TODAY’S READINGS: Ezekiel 37:1-14; Matthew
22:34-40 (423). “You shall love your neighbor as
yourself.”
SATURDAY, AUGUST 20
MEMORIAL OF BERNARD, ABBOT, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Creation is our teacher
Saint Bernard once said, “What I know of the divine sciences and the Holy Scriptures, I have learned in woods
and fields.” A year ago, the Catholic Church announced
that it would join the Orthodox Church on September 1
each year for World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, a day to contemplate God in the beauty of creation.
On this Saturday in August, make some time to contemplate God’s creation and be with God in nature.
TODAY’S READINGS: Ezekiel 43:1-7a; Matthew 23:1
-12 (424). “The greatest among you must be your
servant.”
