Big Bear Group Campout
Friday to Sunday, September 16-18, 2016
As summer fades into fall, the air turns crisp as
golden hues cast a warm glow over Big Bear. Amidst
the vibrant evergreen trees are oaks, cottonwoods
and aspens splashed with brilliant amber, yellow and
pumpkin-colored leaves.
Join Great Outdoors Palm Springs for this end
of summer getaway near Big Bear Lake. The site has
forests, lush sub-alpine meadows and sparkling lakes.
Bring your tent or RV to the Oso Group Camp. Just
25 minutes from Big Bear Lake, the camp is at 6400’
elevation in the secluded Barton Flats area off of
Highway 38. Nestled in an alpine and fir forest, the
site is equipped with multiple tables, a campfire circle and grills. Tent pads are shaded but group areas
are primarily in the open. Drinking water and toilets
are onsite. There are also inexpensive pay showers
just a 5-minute drive away in the Barton Flats campground. There are no utility hookups so RVs will be
dry camping.
There are many activities planned or you can explore the many hiking and biking trails in the area on
your own. Watch the camp white board for updates
on the scheduled activities. On Big Bear Lake there
are kayaks to rent and a boat tour to explore the lake
itself. There is also the scenic sky chairlift to the top
of Snow Summit. There are trails at the top and a res2
taurant for dining. If enough people sign
up for the chair lift ride/dine/hike, we can
get a group rate, the cost will be approximately $20. Be sure to check the box on
the registration form if you are interested
in taking the chairlift.

Early Summer Pool Party was a Great Success
By Joseph Lucente
Great Friends, Great Food and Great Weather
Peter Worline and Ed Emond graciously opened their home and pool as hosts for the GOPS pool party
held on June 12 2016. With a high of just 94 degrees, it was near-perfect pool party weather. This fun and
successful event was attended by 70 members and guests. In addition to the camaraderie and the company of
fellow GOPS members, the attendees enjoyed a lunch buffet catered by El Pollo Loco.
A few new members were in attendance. Their positive first experience with GOPS social events is great feedback to our organization,
as are the many comments received from seasoned members.
We owe a thank you to Ed Emond, Peter Worline, Bob Jaworski,
Jim O’Keefe, Reuben Jimenez, Michael Owen, Jerry Hanson, Keith
Norris and Richard Debner for their help in planning this event, setting up, picking up supplies and cleanup. Plans are already underway
for a late-summer pool party. The details for this activity will be announced in the next few weeks.

Elections are coming soon
It’s that time of the year again: Elections. No, I’m not talking
about the National Election in November, but the Chapter officer
elections in September. The management of our chapter is very
important. We need good officers so that the chapter flourishes.
There are three officers that are elected to the chapter government: President, Vice-President of Outings and Treasurer. The
elections will be held during the General Membership meeting on
September 27, 2016. Palm Springs is a large and growing chapter
and I’m hoping we will continue to elect great officers.
Currently Scott, Vice-President of Outings, and Bob, the Treasurer are planning to run for office again this year. Ritch, President, would like to step down and focus on the newsletter. Below
are the responsibilities of thePresident.
If you are interested in any of the elected positions, the newsletter will print your campaign statement in the September issue.
