The Gathering
The first Sunday of each month we
gather food for our food pantry in
baskets in the hallway and offer our
gifts as an act of worship. This
month the Food Pantry is especially
in need of canned meats.

Church Picnic
welcoming Kyndall Rothaus
Saturday, September 5, 4:00 p.m.
at the Fields’ farm
4911 Battle Lake Road, Mart
Fun activities for the entire family, including swimming,
fishing, hiking, horseshoe pit, and more! You are welcome to
pet the animals or sit and visit with friends while enjoying
delicious food. Please bring your lawn chairs; if you plan to
swim in the pond, bring a life jacket, too.
Hot dogs and buns provided by the Fields. Bring your
own drinks and a side dish to share. We will be making
homemade ice cream and will welcome anyone wanting to
contribute. A sign-up sheet is in the church hallway.
Directions to the Fields’ farm: Hwy. 6 South towards
Marlin. Take the Battle Lake Rd. exit. Drive about 5 miles on
Battle Lake. After you have driven through the Battle Lake
Golf Course, look for Fields’ driveway on the left — a street
sign with their name and address, but it can be difficult to
see. Follow this gravel road. Their house is not visible from
the road. For more information call Patty Field at 876-2817
or Alice Baird.
Dear Lake Shore,
Here we are at last! After the long wait, my first full week to be with you as pastor has finally arrived. Thank you
for your patience this summer as I finished my old job, packed up my house, and began the move back to Waco. I also
used the month of August to do some traveling: revisiting Christ in the Desert Monastery in New Mexico, soaking in
the mineral springs of Ojo Caliente, and making my first-ever trip to the Grand Canyon. Time alone in nature has
always been important to my soul, so I’ve returned refreshed and renewed! I was also able to fly to Maryland to visit my
sister, spending one of the days in D.C.
And now I am back in Waco, ready to embark on a new adventure with you. May God’s Spirit begin the work of
binding us together. Lake Shore, you have made a wonderful impression on me already. Your reputation as a loving,
accepting, and thoughtful congregation reaches far! *
I recognize that at the start of any new pastorate, there’s often a bit of anticipation, excitement, anxiety, and
even fear as we all wonder about what is to come . . . and whether what-is-to-come will be agreeable. I want to suggest
that for these first few weeks, as best as we are able, we set aside the curiosity and the worry about the future, and for a
short while, let’s pause and celebrate a new beginning. Let’s give thanks for all that is good about this place and about
this time. I hope that you will tell me and that you will re-tell each other what you appreciate about this community.
Let’s also take time to get to know one another. Please, tell me your Lake Shore stories and your family stories
and your Waco stories. ** In the near future, I will plan some events so that we can have a chance to get to know one
another in a smaller setting. Look for my invitation soon! I am also always open for lunch and coffee if you would like
to chat.
Let’s begin by celebrating. Hope to see you at the picnic! May God fill our hearts with joy.
Grace and Peace,
Kyndall
*Of course, you have a far-reaching reputation for a good many things, but the aforementioned qualities were the best ones to put in
print.
**I recommend beginning with the funny stories you can tell on each other. Every pastor needs a little leverage, so my ears are open.
CONVICTIONS: How I Learned What Matters Most
Stewardship Committee
by Marcus Borg
Wednesday Seminars, September 2– October 2
led by Buddy Powell
Buddy Powell has been teaching this book in the Koinonia Sunday School
class during the last several months, and both the class and the book are
getting such rave reviews that we asked Buddy to teach it on Wednesdays.
It is a collection of Borg’s reflections on his life, as well as how he
developed his most bedrock convictions and why they matter. The result is a
guide for progressive Christians who seek the best path for following Jesus
today. Borg writes compellingly on the beliefs than can deeply ground and
guide us, including “God Is Real and a Mystery,” “Salvation Is More about
This Life than the Afterlife,” “The Bible Can be True without Being Literally
True,” “Jesus’s Death on the Cross Matters,” “God Is Passionate about Justice
and the Poor,” and “To Love God Is to Love Like God.”
A few copies of the book are still available in the office for $20 each.
The Stewardship Committee (the
good guys) wants to remind you
that for the first time in 16-18
months, giving to the church has
been exceeded by budgeted
needs. It’s not an emergency but I
bet the Finance Committee is
looking more closely at the
issue. We just want to remind all
Lake Shore members and
attendees to keep up with your
pledges and other giving.
—The Good Guys
blessings, Burt
One of the neat gifts Lake Shore gave Burt at the
luncheon on Sunday was a CD of songs he mentioned (and,
in some cases, sang) in sermons this year. Steve Gardner
pulled together a Best of Burt album that includes everything
from “The B-I-B-L-E” to “Let It Be,” Aretha Franklin’s
version of “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” to a jazzy
rendition of “Be Still My Soul.” Take a look at some
of Burt’s greatest hits.
Beth Miller, who teaches in the Baylor Law School,
presented Burt with a certificate of dual membership in
Lake Shore and DaySpring Baptist Churches. Since we have
never heard of this category of membership(s), we asked her
to explain its validity. “Sharlande asked me to review this
certificate of dual membership regarding its legality, and I
can assure Burt that a court would never invalidate it. Of
course, I can also assure him that a court would not enforce
it since courts abstain from deciding purely ecclesiastical
matters. But other than that, the certificate is entirely
‘legal.’”
Blessings on your time here and there, Burt. You have
certainly blessed us through your sermons this year.

Weekly Youth Update
 Don’t forget that next weekend is the church picnic to welcome Kyndall to
Lake Shore. I hope you can make it to meet our new pastor and show her she’s
welcome! The day following will be her first Sunday.
 Remember to check out the new youth bulletin board by the stairs! The food
calendar is posed on the board, so if you haven’t already, please stop by for a
second to sign up for a day to bring food and join us for a meeting! (Or, it is still
online here: http://bit.ly/1KjdN8J )
 Youth activities start back this Wednesday evening. We will head to the teen
house after concerns and celebrations in the sanctuary to meet up with groups.
If you kid has not yet signed up for a Wednesday night group, please remind
them to do so ASAP!
 Beginning Wednesday evening, September 16 in the Teen House, we will
begin our "Company of Parents" meetings. For those of you I haven’t spoken to
about this yet, this is a place where parents of teens can meet for an hour to
hear one another, encourage one another, discuss intentional parenting with
one another, and pray for one another. This meeting is discussion based, not a
lecture, and there will be a facilitator to ask questions and encourage
participation. Please consider making time to attend. We will meet the 3rd
Sunday of every month. Let me know if you have any questions! There will be
more information as we move closer to the meeting. —Zach
