Patient Handbook - The Woman`s Hospital of Texas
Patient Handbook
The Woman’s Hospital of Texas is dedicated to caring for women
throughout every stage of their lives.
E
stablished in 1976, The Woman’s Hospital of Texas is the
state’s premier facility dedicated solely to the care of
women and newborn infants. More than 39 years ago, a group of
physicians envisioned a hospital that met the health needs of
women and fostered the understanding of how modern health care
can improve the lives of women and their families. The Woman’s
Hospital of Texas continues to build on the original premise
reflected by its founders and is committed to its mission of providing
compassionate care to the women and infants it serves.

Confidentiality of Information
The information requested during your registration is designed to make your medical record as complete as
possible. All information is confidential.
During your hospitalization, your medical record may be reviewed by the hospital’s Utilization Management
Department. This may be the result of a request from your insurance company, federal or state regulations,
or part of the hospital’s performance improvement activities. The intent of the review process is to ensure the
appropriateness and quality of care while still maintaining the confidentiality of your record.
During admission or at any other time while you are with us, you may request to be given a “no information
patient” status. This means callers and visitors will not receive any acknowledgement of your admission.
“No information patients” cannot receive deliveries, including flowers.
Health Information (Medical Records)
To ensure a continuum of care, we have implemented an integrated computer information system that
will enable your medical record information to be shared between caregivers and physicians involved in
your care. Therefore, your medical record information will be available, now and in the future, to your
physicians who practice at HCA facilities in the Houston area.
Copies of health records will be provided upon written request by the patient and payment of a reasonable
fee. You can request these copies in the Health Information Management Department, located on the first
floor of the East Tower.
Registration Requirements
We will communicate with your insurance company and employer to determine the allowable benefits.
Estimated coinsurance and deductible amounts due will be collected at the time of pre-registration or
registration.
To file a claim for you, we must have:
A copy of your insurance card and a valid form of identification;
• The name of your insurance company;
• The policy, certificate and/or group numbers for your policy;
• The name of the insured person;
• The effective date of the policy;

Speak up if you have questions or concerns.
• We encourage you and your family to call Extension 2076 for additional assistance if you have
concerns about your condition that you feel need immediate attention.
• You may want to write down questions to ask when your doctor visits.
Identify yourself.
• Wear your I.D. armband at all times and make sure it is checked before any procedure is performed or
medication is given to you.
• Know what procedures you are to have and make sure health care workers tell you what they plan to
do before consenting to a procedure.
Request your health care workers wash their hands.
• Ask all health care workers who have direct contact with you whether they have washed their hands.
Hand washing is an important way to prevent infection in hospitals.
When you are admitted to the hospital, bring a list of all medications you are taking.
• NOTE: Include all over-the-counter medications, home remedies, and herbal medications including tea,
vitamins, and weight gain or loss products, such as shakes, pills or bars.
• Let the nurse and doctor know of any allergies and type of reaction or side effects that you have.
Ask for information about your medicines or intravenous fluids.
• Know what medications you are taking, why you are taking them, what they look like, what time you
take them and potential side effects.
• When receiving your medications, look at the color and/or shape and question if the color or
shape is different.
• Make sure your I.D. armband is checked before any medication is given.
Understand your surgery.
• If you are having surgery, make sure that you, your doctor, and health care workers all agree and are
completely clear on exactly what is planned to be done.
• Discuss risks and benefits of your surgery.
• Be sure to review with all health care team members the location of the surgery site, if applicable.
Help prevent falls.
• Ask for our assistance before you walk after any procedure.
• We know you want to be independent, but we want to assess your readiness to ambulate. Most falls
are avoidable, if assistance is obtained.
Review your Discharge Instructions.
• When you are discharged home, ask your doctor to explain your plan of care for you to
follow at home.
• Make sure you understand your medications and what activity and eating plan you are to follow.
Patient Safety is the primary goal for the doctors, nurses, and medical professionals who work or practice
at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas. We need your participation and help to provide the safest environment
for quality health care.

Visiting
While there are no designated visiting hours, the hospital recognizes quiet time hours from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00
p.m. daily.
Because adequate rest is part of your healing process, you may wish to limit the number of visitors you see
during your stay. As a consideration for other patients, we encourage visitors to use the designated waiting
areas rather than waiting in the hallways.
For the benefit of all patients, the hospital enforces these rules:
1. Children under the age of 12 are welcome to visit; however, they must be supervised by an adult other
than the patient at all times.
2. For privacy, visitors need to leave the room when you are being examined or treated by your
physician or nurse.
3. Labor & Delivery: The birth of a new baby is a family experience. For the safety and concern of our
laboring patients, we allow three visitors per patient, depending on each patient’s desire and/or
condition. Visitors to Labor & Delivery will be given a visitor badge at the third floor Reception Desk.
For safety reasons, visitors are not allowed to gather and wait in the hallways. The care and privacy
of our patients may be disrupted by visitor traffic, so we will help direct you to one of our
waiting rooms.

Why We Recommend Breastfeeding
The Woman’s Hospital of Texas and all of the major public health and medical
organizations such as The World Health Organization and The American Academy of
Pediatrics recommend breastfeeding. Initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of life,
breastfeeding exclusively (no other food or drink) for the first 6 months and continuing
breastfeeding, along with giving appropriate solid foods, up to a year of age or beyond
is the standard. Most women are able to breastfeed successfully. We offer support and
resources to assist. See our resources information in this booklet.
Benefits of Breastfeeding
For Baby
• Mother’s milk is more than nutrition, it is also medicine. It reduces the risk of acute
infections such as:
– Diarrhea, Pneumonia, Ear infection, Meningitis, Urinary tract infection.
• Aids in brain development, increasing IQ by an average of 2-5 points.
• Some studies suggest decreased rates of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in the
first year of life.
• Infant mortality rates among breastfed infants up to one year of age in the United
States are reduced by 21% compared to formula-fed infants.
• Protects the baby when he grows up, long after you stop breastfeeding. It lowers your
baby’s risk of:
– Being overweight later in life, getting diabetes, having high cholesterol and getting
some types of cancer, such as lymphoma, leukemia, and Hodgkin’s disease.
For Mother
• It lowers her risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and diabetes.
• It saves money in formula and health care costs and cuts down on days missed from
work due to a sick child.
For the Community
It is a natural resource that doesn’t require manufacturing or shipping and doesn’t produce
packaging waste to dispose of, so it helps the environment.
Risks of Artificial Feeding
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, research in developed and developing
countries of the world, including middle-class populations in developed countries, provides
strong evidence that, compared with breastfeeding, formula feeding increases the incidence
and/or severity of a wide range of diseases including:
• Bacterial meningitis, bacteremia, diarrhea, respiratory tract infection, necrotizing

What can you do to improve your chances of success at breastfeeding?
• Take our breastfeeding classes online and in person! Knowing the correct way to position baby at
breast is key to comfortable feedings that get a lot of milk to your baby. You will also learn how to
continue breastfeeding when returning to work or school.
• Take one of our childbirth classes to learn non-medicated ways to cope with labor and reduce the
amount of pain medication you will need.
– Comfort measures can include a comfortable environment, conscious relaxation, massage, positionchanging, mental imagery and a supportive birth partner.
– Among the choices of pain medications, Woman’s Hospital most frequently employs the epidural since
it has the least effect on the start of breastfeeding.
• Hold your baby skin-to-skin right away after birth.
• Breastfeed in the first hour and frequently after that. Offer it anytime baby seems ready. Frequent
feedings lead to a good milk supply.
• “Room-in”- keeping your baby by your side all the time so you can learn to recognize his or her
hunger cues and respond quickly.
• Wait until breastfeeding is well established (about 1 month) before offering your baby a pacifier.
• Be patient. It takes time for both mother and baby to learn, but it gets easier.
• Be proud of every drop of mother’s milk you provide for your baby.
Almost all mothers can breastfeed successfully, including initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of life,
breastfeeding exclusively (no other food or drink) for the first 6 months and then continuing breastfeeding,
along with giving appropriate solid foods, up to a year of age or beyond.
Language Interpreters
If you or your family requires an interpreter, please ask your nurse for assistance.
Nurses
You will interact more with the nursing staff on your floor than with any other members of your health care
team. Nurses administer medications and perform many of the treatments ordered by your physician. They
also coordinate diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures ordered by your physician. The nursing
staff will provide the nursing care appropriate for your illness or condition as well as your individual needs.
The nursing staff is composed of Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), Nursing
Technicians, Operating Room Technicians, and Unit Secretaries – all working as one team.

Obstetrical and Family-Centered Care
Services
Antepartum (Before Delivery)
Occasionally, situations develop during pregnancy that put the health of the mother or baby
at-risk, and special care becomes necessary. Our Antepartum Unit is designed to care for
high-risk patients before delivery. Perinatologists (physician specialists in maternal and
fetal medicine) and antepartum nurses manage these high-risk pregnancies toward optimal
outcome.
Maternal Child Unit (Postpartum and Newborn Nursery) Postpartum Unit
After the delivery of your baby, you will be moved to one of our Postpartum Units where you
will receive care from our skilled nurses. Our nurses are dedicated to assisting you in your
immediate after-delivery care and preparing you for caring for yourself at home.
While in our Postpartum Unit, you are our focus. Our nurses specialize in your care and are
available to help in any way you need. You may choose to receive visitors or just rest – we
want to pamper you and focus on you. Your nurse and your baby’s nurse carry a phone,
allowing you to speak directly to them as needed.
Managing your pain is a top priority with the postpartum nurses. You will be given a pain
management card to help you keep track of when you can have pain medication and what
effect you might expect from it.
Newborn Nursery
Unless other arrangements have been made, our nurses will visit with you and your new
baby.
Mom and baby will room-in at least 23 hours a day. The transition nurses have received
specialized training and are skilled in the assessment and critical observation of your
newborn.
You will receive a lot of training and important information about the care of your newborn,
including safety tips and different screening tests, during the early months of childhood
that are vital to the well-being of your baby. The nursery nurses are also available to assist
you with basic breastfeeding needs. International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants are
available to assist you. We welcome your questions or any additional information that we
may provide.
The Maternal Child Unit is here to serve you and meet your needs as well as provide
additional information that may help you.
As nurses change shifts throughout the day, they will share information with you at your
bedside. This allows you an opportunity to ask questions, tell us your goals for that shift, and
learn our plans for you that day.
Someone needs to be with your infant at all times. NEVER leave your infant unattended. If
you need assistance while showering, etc., please contact your nurse. Infant safety - place
infant in crib if you begin to feel sleepy. Please keep the side rails up at all times.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Our Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) provides observation and specialized care for premature and
high-risk infants. A Neonatologist (physician specializing in the care of newborns) and Neonatal Nurse
Practitioners are on site at all times. The Woman’s Hospital of Texas is equipped with a state-of-the-art 1.5T
Philips Achieva MRI system that provides dedicated, specialized MR imaging. The magnet provides a wide
range of clinical applications used in the fetal, neonatal, and pediatric care of premature and
high-risk babies.
Labor & Delivery
The Labor & Delivery team at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas is the most experienced in the region, helping
families grow one or more healthy babies at a time for over 39 years. Generally, we welcome more than
800 babies a month – a number that represents the trusting relationships we’ve developed with generations
of women and families.
To arrange a tour of our unit, including the nursery and postpartum floors, please call 713-791-7495.
We’re happy to show you around!
What to Expect
Most patients arrive through our West Tower, with Labor & Delivery located on the third floor – whether it is
a scheduled induction, Cesarean section or active labor. A receptionist will greet you, assess the immediacy
of your condition, and then escort you to the necessary location to treat your needs. Once you arrive in the
appropriate locations, you will be under the constant care of a medical professional, all the way until you
leave the hospital with your new bundle of joy.
Our hospital has 35 labor and delivery rooms and six operating rooms used for Cesarean sections. We
also have a 9-bed Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) for mothers recovering from C-sections.
The Woman’s Hospital of Texas is one of the only hospitals in the country that can boast a
1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio in our Labor & Delivery Unit. Throughout entire shifts, nurses tend to the needs of
mother and baby without the distraction of other patients or responsibilities. Our nurses are there to ensure
the well-being of you and your baby, offering compassion, support, and expertise.
After a healthy delivery, initial bonding time is always given to the baby and family. The hospital strives to
limit separation between mothers and newborns, even for women undergoing a cesarean section.
A Safe Delivery
In all labor and delivery rooms, patients receive continuous electronic fetal monitoring using GE Centricity
systems. Those same feeds are also monitored at a central station by the Charge Nurse.
Our entire nursing staff is certified in fetal monitoring and neonatal resuscitation. Our nurses are also
certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). New nurses undergo an extensive orientation process,
and all nurses undergo yearly competencies to review the latest recommendations in care and services.
Our nurses stay abreast of developments, and are some of the most thoroughly trained in the country. Many
nurses join our staff from other hospitals and frequently remark about the levels of professionalism and
proficiency found only at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas.
Our physician staffing includes 24-hour anesthesia and neonatal expertise. When routine labor may require
additional emergent expertise, there’s no safer place in the region to deliver your baby that The Woman’s
Hospital of Texas. Our maternal-fetal medicine specialists are able to care for the most
serious complications.

Customized Birth Experience
We promote breastfeeding and mother-baby bonding time. In 2011, we began offering
mother-baby bonding in the PACU immediately following Cesarean Sections because many
mothers expressed a desire to stay with their babies directly after surgery. Mothers and
babies enjoy this early connection while the mother recovers with her baby in her arms.
We strive to create the most natural environment of care between the mother and baby.
We want your labor and delivery process to be one that is the best for your needs. If you
prefer natural birth instead of an epidural, we support that decision. If you are interested in
trying alternative labor techniques like birthing balls or massage strategies, we support that
decision as well.
After delivery, your baby remains in your room for continued bonding. Our goal is to
customize your care to meet your needs and desires and make your baby’s delivery as
natural, happy, and memorable as possible.
Physical Therapists
Our Licensed Physical Therapists specialize in women’s health and pelvic floor problems.
We can help patients manage pain through manual therapy, education, and exercise. We

prolonged bed rest or post-surgical stiffness and soreness, our Physical Therapists can help
you feel better. For more information, please call 713-799-6193.

Partners in Pain Management
Each patient has a different tolerance and attitude toward pain. Your caregivers at The Woman’s Hospital of
Texas are sensitive to individual needs and will help you manage your pain.
Several times during your hospital stay, you will be asked to “rate your pain” on a scale of 0 – 10.
This allows caregivers to gauge the level of effectiveness of the medications and other pain management
techniques, and make adjustments accordingly.
The pain scale rates pain from 0 – 10. 0 is no pain, 10 is extreme pain.

Medications
Some pain is to be expected after surgery. Your physician will order the appropriate
medication and method of administration. Options your physician may order include:
Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) Pump
Continuous – the pump is set to give a controlled amount of medication to the patient
continuously.
Bolus – the pump gives a controlled amount of medications through the IV when activated;
the patient is the only person who should push the button. The pump does not allow
dispensation of more medication than is prescribed by your physician.
Injections
Intramuscular (IM) – a nurse injects pain medication directly into a muscle, usually in the
hip or buttock area.
Intravenous (IV) – a nurse injects the pain medication into the IV tubing.
Oral
Pills or tablets – you take them by mouth.
***If your pain medication is ordered “as needed,” it will not be given to you automatically.
You will need to tell your nurse when you need pain medication.***
Extra Comfort Measures
• Change your position. Lie on your left side, placing a pillow between your legs and a
small towel under your stomach for support.
• Sit up in bed or in a chair as often as allowed.
• Movement helps. Walk as soon as your physician allows.
• Request a heating pad or ice bag (requires a physician’s order).
• Ask your family to gently massage your neck or feet.
• Take slow and deep breaths.
You are an important part of effective pain management. Communicate the pain you are
experiencing to your health care professionals. Be certain to let them know:
• When you are in pain,
• The location of your pain,
• The intensity of your pain.
Talk to your physician and nurse when:
• You are experiencing pain – the best time to manage pain is when it first begins,
• You have questions about controlling your pain,
• You believe your current pain medication is not working.

Going Home
Clinical Discharge
• Once we receive your physician’s discharge order, your nurse will bring the • hospital’s discharge
education information to you.
• Please review the discharge instructions, prescribed medications, nutritional needs, and activity
limitations. If you have any questions regarding the information, be sure to ask your nurse for
additional information.
• Your physician will also provide you specific and personalized instructions for your post-surgery care
and follow-up appointment as well.
• When you are dressed and your questions are answered, contact your nurse and a member of your
team will escort you by wheelchair to the hospital entrance.
• Be sure to take all of your belongings with you.
Arranging Transportation Home
Prior to your discharge from the hospital, please arrange for a friend or family member to take you home.
You should arrange to leave the hospital soon after your discharge is written.
Car Seats
State law mandates that all parents must use a car seat for infants. Your newborn must go home in a car
seat, secured in the back seat according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It is the parents’ responsibility to
put the baby in the car seat. We suggest you practice using the car seat before you come to the hospital. It
would be even better to have the installation checked by a Child Passenger Safety Technician. Locations of
car seat
check-up events in Houston can be found at www.safekidsgreaterhouston.org.
Please secure your car seat in your vehicle before you are ready to take your newborn home.
Financial Discharge
All patient portions not covered by your insurance are due prior to discharge from the hospital.
An Express Discharge is automatically given to all patients who have met the financial requirements (your
estimated patient responsibility) upon entry to the hospital. The Express Discharge allows you to leave
directly from your room on the day of discharge.
The cashier’s office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. After hours, a representative is
available at extension 7335. The hospital accepts all major credit cards.
Newborn Insurance Requirement
Many insurance companies and employers require that you complete an insurance application to add
your newborn(s) to your existing insurance plan. Even if you are expecting to participate in a Cobra plan,
the newborn(s) must be added to the plan with your employer. Don’t Forget to Add Your Baby to Your
Insurance!
