take care to ensure that employees
have been properly trained, that
new employees fully understand
how to do their job safely and
that everyone takes all necessary
precautions to remain safe while
completing their tasks.
The key to prevention is to
develop a health and safety
program. A good health and safety
program does not need to be
expensive and can be integrated
quite easily into your entire
business operation.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR
SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS:
Make workers aware: It is
extremely important to workplace
health and safety that everyone in
the workplace communicates. As
an employer, you must ensure that
everyone has access to health and
safety information. Make sure
that workers are familiar with
any health and safety hazards
in the workplace. Display a copy
of the Occupational Health and
Safety Act in a prominent place
where employees can easily read
it. Put together a company health
and safety policy and give each
employee a copy; update this
policy frequently.
Maintain equipment: Make sure
that tools, equipment, machines and
materials are safe for workers to use,
and that records of safety checks and
maintenance are kept up-to-date.
Lead by example: Provide the
information, instruction, training
and supervision necessary to
protect a worker’s health and
safety. As you’re training a worker
to do a task, explain about the
hazards of doing that task and how
to avoid them. People learn best
by showing, then doing. Provide
supervision to ensure the worker
puts that training into practice.
Provide protective equipment:
Make sure that workers have
the right equipment and safety
gear needed to do their job
safely and that equipment is
maintained in good condition.
Show workers the correct
method to use the equipment
and make certain that they use/
wear it when necessary.
Cooperate with safety
committees and representatives:
Cooperate with joint health
and safety committees or with
the employee health and safety
representative, whichever is
required in your size of business.
Workplace inspections: Conduct
regular workplace inspections to
look for potentially hazardous
conditions, which could result in
workplace accidents.
Practice emergency situations:
Practice what to do in an
emergency situation (e.g. fire,
health emergency, security
emergency). Employees should be
aware of the standard procedures
for dealing with a variety of
emergencies.
Document and report accidents:
Document and immediately report all
workplace accidents where outside
medical attention was necessary to
your provincial Worker’s Health and
Safety authority.
Build health and safety into job
descriptions: When appropriate
include skill sets like first aid
training into a job description.
When looking for employees,
look for first aid training and
other forms of health and safety
qualifications.
A health and safety program just
makes good business sense. With a
good health and safety program in
place, small business owners can
focus their efforts on making their

laying games has become a
serious business at the Hotel
Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre—and with good reason.
As Niagara’s only specialized
complex continuing care and rehabilitation facility, the Hotel Dieu
Shaver recently added virtual games
as part of their rehab programs. This
is the first time virtual rehabilitation
programs have been utilized in the
Niagara Region.
“Virtual rehabilitation is still in
its infancy stage,” explains Chris
Pollard, Manager of Neurology at
Hotel Dieu Shaver. “But a lot of
research is being done and there’s
some evidence it can have a thera-

peutic effect on patients.”
One of their most successful
new applications is the Interactive
Rehabilitation and Exercise System
(IREX). Using green screen technology, patients are filmed with a camera while their image is transposed
onto a 50 inch monitor. Patients
can then participate in sports like
snowboarding and soccer or even
everyday routines like doing laundry
or walking up stairs. The IREX system can also be tailored to the specific needs of the patient, isolating
certain body parts or movements.
Programs can also be adapted for
patients in wheelchairs.
The Hotel Dieu Shaver has also
introduced another virtual system
to their patients—the Wii system. A
popular video gaming console produced by Nintendo, the Wii system
offers a similar interactive sports and
activity environment as the IREX.
Since it involves using a controller
and more active movements, the Wii
can be more physically demanding
for their patients to use than the
IREX system. The Wii system also allows for patients to compete against
each other and to mix social interaction with activity and play.
These half hour sessions with
the IREX or Wii systems don’t replace patients’ traditional rehabilitation programs. However, it does
offer them the opportunity to work
on many physical skills and movements including their balance and
coordination, and the competition
has proven to be a great motivator.
“The games can be quite intense
and some of our patients try to do
too much,” says Chris, “So we always
monitor them to make sure they
don’t overexert themselves.”
In recent years, virtual rehabilitation has become a popular treatment
option in Alberta and parts of the
United States. Virtual programs like
telerehabilitation—where a patient
can receive rehab programming over
the internet—are also being tested in
rural areas where people can’t always
get easy access to proper rehabilitation and medical care.
Since the Hotel Dieu Shaver’s
virtual program was introduced last
fall, it has been a great success with
both inpatients and outpatients.
“Some people love the game—and
it really helps them regain their selfconfidence,” says Chris. “For some
patients, it’s the first time they’ve
laughed in a long time.” HWS

esearch shows that smiling is linked to
optimism. The more you smile the more
you interpret things positively. Since we smile
when we are happy, our optimism is linked to
our happiness. Creating a workplace that is
mentally, emotionally, and physically positive is a
worthwhile goal. Workplace wellness makes good
business sense as employee health is tied to their
productivity. If you are happy at work, then you
are engaged in your tasks and responsibilities.
Positive thinking encourages a healthy lifestyle
which leads to increased job performance.
Ancient wisdom and recent research show
that emotional and physical health are connected. It can be hard to make healthy decisions because we are attached to our habits. So everyone
requires a little encouragement to make positive
changes in their lifestyle choices. Workplace wellness provides everyone with little nudges in the
right direction. Positive choices are catchy like a
great song. Before you know it, you will be singing the tune with the whole office.
What are the immediate benefits? You will
experience mental clarity, an improved attitude,

and an optimistic outlook on life. Your improved
emotional and physical health helps you accomplish more while working. And when you succeed
at work, you will feel more satisfied in your life.
A healthy workplace promotes a low turnover
rate for staff. When you think and feel positively
about your workplace, you want to do your work.
Workplace wellness fosters teamwork, high morale, and happiness.
Research shows that healthy employees take
fewer days off from sickness. With everyone at
work, the team is stronger. A good team environment increases productivity. Mental wellness information is powerful because it transforms patterns and habits. Consider introducing workplace
wellness programs in:
• nutrition
• exercise
• weight control
• stress management
• smoking cessation
• healthy relationship
• cancer risk
• hypertension
• drug or alcohol abuse
The best way to show the benefits of these
programs is through participation. You have to
lead by example. If you are an employer, pave
the way for positive change by making healthy

together, the collective effort for
positive change is powerful. Laughing, working,

1. Be resilient. Resilience helps you deal with
difficulty, change, and misfortune. Optimism is a
big part of resilience. Remember to take a step
back and reflect on the “big picture.”
2. Make connections with others. Allowing
others to get close to you makes it easier to
form give–and–take relationships. Counting on
others helps build a workplace support network.
3. Learn to negotiate. Others see things differently. Recognizing that you don’t have all the answers helps you learn from others. Knowing when
to give a little creates growth opportunities.
4. Remain curious. Being open to others and
the world is an amazing way to change.

Institute shows that working Americans who ignore their hearing problems are collectively losing at least

there, may lose income if they can’t
completely grasp the latest news at
the water cooler or a phone message
from the boss.

The average amount of income
lost by working people who don’t
get hearing aids ranges from $1,000
a year—for those with mild hearing
loss—to $12,000 a year for those
with profound hearing loss.
However, on average, the income
decline due to hearing loss can be cut
in half by wearing a hearing aid, the
research revealed.
Getting a hearing aid at a younger
age may also help reduce the chance
of losing income. Many think of hearing loss as something that happens
mainly in older people. However,
most people with this problem are in
the prime of life, including one out of
six baby-boomers (ages 41-59) and
one out of 14 (ages 29-40). Yet only
one out of four Americans with hearing problems are getting treatment.
Many people are embarrassed to
admit they have hearing problems
and might need hearing aids, experts
say. Some incorrectly think a hearing aid will make them seem odd
or less able to do the job than their
co–workers.
“If you seem out of touch because
you can’t hear very well, you will
be much more noticeable than you
would be with a modern hearing
device in your ear,” says Dr. Sergei
Kochkin, the Better Hearing Insti-
tute’s executive director.
In the workplace, he points out,
good communication skills are essential, particularly when it comes to
understanding what customers and
co–workers want.

family life, hamper emotional intimacy and increase the chances of

is a growing industry.
As we age, it is more
and more important that we age
in familiar surroundings, near
our family and friends. Medication safety is a major concern
as we age at home. Our aging
bodies respond differently to
medications than they did when
we were younger. Many aging
adults see multiple doctors and
take an array of pills. Experts
suggest that the average aging
adult actually takes between four
to six medications a day. Along
with those medications, many
are taking vitamins, natural
supplements and herbs. It is

important to understand that
each medication we take as we
age can increase our chances for
an adverse reaction.
Elderly home health care
and medication safety is one of

with medications as we age is
three fold.
The first factor is multiple
medications, herbs, natural
supplements and vitamins can
cause a drug interaction. This is
an adverse effect to one or more
of the drugs you are taking.
The second common factor to
medication safety is the time it
takes your body to metabolize the
drug in your system. If you are
taking a drug over time, it may
build up in your system, resulting
in too much medication in your
body. The most common sign that
there is an adverse reaction to a
medication is change in mental
status. Simply put, the aging
adult may exhibit periods of confusion, mood changes, excessive
drowsiness, poor coordination.
The third factor that plays
a role in elder home care and
medication safety is not taking
the medications as prescribed.
Missing doses, taking another
dose because you are not sure
you took it, or not taking the
medications everyday to stretch
out the medications for financial
for just a few days worth. That
way you will have time to see if
you are going to have a reaction
or if the medication is having the
anticipated result.

To maintain medication safety
and elder care at home, you must
explore a medication system that
is appropriate for the aging adult.
There are multiple technological
advances, as well as simple pill
boxes that distribute the medications over a week with slots for
different times of the day for
your pills.
If you are missing medications or not taking a medication
as prescribed, there is assistance
for obtaining medications. Be
honest with your physician if you
cannot afford the medication.
Ask if there is a generic brand
available. Do not hesitate to ask
for samples to try a medication
for a few days. If samples are not
available, ask for a prescription

of disease. Health is a balanced state of inner joy and freedom
to grow, evolve, and develop in order
to manifest our highest potential.
Health is also harmony with nature
and feeding our body only what
nature has for us.
We as humans have a powerful
healing system within us. Our body
is complex and will give us signs and
signals when something is wrong
and needs attention. When we ignore these signals further trouble
in our bodies will manifest. If we
attend to these signals naturally our
body will thrive.
Many people believe that as we
age that our health will decline.
If you believe that is true then it
will be true for you, however if you
believe it is not true and you take
good care of your health then you
will age with grace, ease and have
an excellent quality of life right into
your golden years.
Some of you are thinking right
now that you have seen it first hand,
as your parents aged you watched
their health decline. Some of you
may say it is happening to yourselves
right now. I am saying I believe it
doesn’t have to be that way, the ancient Aztecs and many other ancient
peoples have proven that.
Why our health deteriorates with
age is mostly from past abuse and
not listening to our bodies. We do not
have the obvious warning lights like
a car does on its dashboard and if we
did would we ignore them anyhow
and just keep moving? Here are some
signals to watch for fatigue, lack of
energy, poor memory, constipation,
cravings, poor sleep, mood swings,
weight gain, bloating, skin issues,
loss of hair, weak nails, bad breathe,
infections and a strange taste in your
mouth and so on.
If we had these warnings sign

we ignore them? Is the health of our
car more important than the health

always find the money to fix it, and
yet when it comes to our health
we let it go until there is almost no

• Eat in moderation.
• Eat a minimum of 60% raw fruits, vegetables,

T
he $40 million It’s Our Time Campaign
is a collaborative initiative of all the
foundations within the Niagara Health
System. Funds raised through the Campaign
will support major improvements at all Niagara
Health System sites and the development of
the new Health-care Complex to be built in St.
Catharines. The following information focuses on
the new Health-care Complex.
The St. Catharines complex is currently one of
the largest infrastructure projects in development
in Ontario. Construction of the new health-care
complex to upgrade and modernize healthcare
in Niagara will begin in Spring 2009, and will
be operational in 2012. The result will be a
state-of-the-art health-care facility that will
bring new regional programs and services to
Niagara and replace two aging community
hospitals in St. Catharines.
The facility will house new regional services, including radiation treatment for cancer patients, cardiac catheterization, and an increased
number of acute care and longer-term mental
health beds, ensuring closer-to-home access
to an advanced-level of care for the more than
450,000 residents across the Niagara region.
The 970,000 square-foot facility to be built
on a 32-acre section of the 40-acre site at First
Street and Fourth Avenue in St. Catharines
will include:
• a 375-bed community-based hospital
offering acute and critical inpatient services, surgical, emergency and ambulatory services under
one roof for the residents of St. Catharines, Thorold, Niagara-on-the-Lake and immediate area.
• The Walker Family Cancer Centre—which will
provide close-to-home treatment for the more
than 1,000 cancer patients who currently travel
to Hamilton or Toronto for life-saving radiation
treatment;
• a Regional Mental Health Centre with an increased number of longer-term inpatient mental
health beds and acute mental health beds, along
with ambulatory care services;
• a Regional Cardiac Catheterization Centre to
provide diagnostic investigation services allowing
procedures to be undertaken to reduce hospitalizations due to heart disease, resulting in lowered
wait times and improved access to treatment;
• Expanded regional dialysis
services; enabling the hospital to
act as the hub of regional chronic
kidney disease. HWS
