BISHOP’S PEN
By: Bishop Walter S. Thomas, Sr., Pastor
Praise the Lord!!! It is always a
pleasure to write to you in our
Empowering Disciples Magazine.
The magazine staff works hard to
bring you news about our wonderful
church. I applaud them for the
excellent work they do.
This edition is no different. The focus
is The Season of Celebration. I don’t
know about you but I really enjoyed
the Season of Celebration. One of
the memorable moments for me
was celebrating my 40th Wedding
anniversary with my church family.
First Lady and I were blown away by
the love and appreciation shown to
us. It was a day to remember.
We are gearing up for the fall. Soon our ministry year will begin, and we will
be back to our regular routines. As we enter the fall, remember to keep church
attendance and ministry involvement as a part of your routine. The spiritual growth
of you and your family should be a top priority. I look forward to seeing you each
week in service.
God Bless,
Bishop Walter S. Thomas Sr., Pastor

This year is moving quickly. It seems
like yesterday we were playing in the
snow, and now it is fall and a new school
year has begun. Time has flown by. I
pray each of you enjoyed your summer
and took time to unwind and relax. A
new ministry year has begun. So many
exciting things will be happening this fall
at New Psalmist.
This edition focuses on The Season
of Celebration. Let’s take a look at
the awesome summer we had at New
Psalmist. This year we did something
different and had all of our celebration
days together over two months. There
was celebration and anticipation in
the air as everyone had a chance to celebrate all that God is doing individually and
collectively in New Psalmist.
The Season of Celebration taught me something very important. It is necessary to
celebrate pivotal moments in life, whether big or small. I hope that you take that lesson
with you as well. Learn to celebrate your accomplishments. Take time to congratulate
yourself for a job well done before moving on to a new project.
I, along with the staff of the Empowering Disciples Magazine pray that you enjoy this
edition. We are always looking for new faces and writers to join our team. If you are
interested, please email Gayle Watkins, assistant editor – [email protected].
Be Blessed,
Joi Thomas

MAN on a
Mission
By: Leroy McKenzie, Jr.
Christians all over the world celebrate
Easter! It is the remembrance of Christ’s
crucifixion and His resurrection on the
third day. As members of NPBC all know,
our church does not celebrate in ordinary
ways, we do so in extraordinary ways!
This year, the Easter season at NPBC
included a sermon series by Bishop
Thomas called, “Man on a Mission”. The
series “focused on what Jesus did for us
and then what we as a church, must do to
be on a mission for the Kingdom of God
today,” said Reverend Al Bailey.
2
In the first sermon, Bishop Thomas
preached about Deliverance; the second,
Restoration; the third, The Final Assault;
and the fourth, The Battle. Each sermon
was designed so that all might apply the
message to our daily lives, and think
about not only what our missions are in
the Body of Christ, but what our missions
are individually.
We are called to make our missions
POSSIBLE.
Examples of NPBC’s missions made
possible include employment opportunities
in partnership with Under Armour and
Johns Hopkins Hospital, and local and
global humanitarian efforts achieved
through the American Red Cross and the
Lott Carey Mission Society.
As a church, we have to
understand our mission just
as Christ did, and fulfill that
mission walking in the will of
God. It is possible!
Bishop Thomas has declared that we are
on a mission and that we must take on
that mission individually and collectively.
Create a mission statement and use
Christ as the example on how to make
our mission possible.

EASTER EGG
HUNT
Story & Poem By: Deb Ramsey
Easter eggs
Easter parades
Here the children come!
All dressed up
Baskets too
Ready for some fun!
Hide and seek
Let’s start the hunt
Everyone’s in place.
1, 2, 3
Get set, let’s go
Start looking for a trace!
New Psalmist Baptist Church (NPBC) hosted another
exciting and fun-filled Easter Egg Hunt that was
enjoyed by many NPBC children as well as children
from surrounding communities. This year, the focus
was on invitation rather than advertising as the NPBC
Kingdom Kidz (Children’s) Ministry strived to reach
out to as many parents, grandparents and guardians
that wanted to take part in this event.
“Oh wow, there’s one
Another too,
Staring right at me!”
Children learned that service to others and sharing
“Ok, let’s go
I’m finding eggs
As easy as 1, 2, 3!”
for Easter eggs! Many times, children who found
“Finally, I’m almost done
Wow, I’ve got some treats.”
Easter Egg Hunts are so much fun
Now it’s time to eat!
shared the treats with children who did not find as
with others is just as fun-filled and exciting as hunting
more plastic eggs with treats than other children,
many or did not find any treats at all. This Easter
Egg Hunt was another way to demonstrate the true
meaning of the Easter holiday in a way that children
could understand.
Easter tells a story like no other story ever told; the
Resurrection of Christ, the overthrow of death and
the awesome victory over sin! Easter represents an
assurance of new life for everyone, everywhere. It
expresses our Christian faith and denotes all that
we believe as Christians.

BISHOP THOMAS’ 41ST ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
By: Elliott Jenkins
Bishop Walter Thomas, Sr. has been pastor of New Psalmist Baptist Church for more than
41 years. When most men would sit back and take it easy, Bishop Thomas seemingly gets a
second wind.
Seventeen years ago, I was in Bishop Thomas’s Men’s Class studying the stages of manhood.
One of the truths taught to the men related to being fruitful to God in all stages of life. With the
energy of a man half his age, Bishop Thomas continues to manifest this spirit. He has led the
church through explosions in membership, numerous moves into larger capacity facilities, and
developed programs and projects that minister to individuals and the community at large. His
ministry continues to extend beyond the walls of NPBC as he proclaims the gospel in national
as well as international forums. He is mentor to generations of pastors. His list of ministry sons
and daughters is impressive and growing.
The fruit God has plucked from the tree of New Psalmist and Bishop Thomas has been
sweet indeed.
The casual observer can see fruit still growing on the tree of NPBC and Bishop Thomas. The
creation of new ministries within the church and the community, academic scholarships, and
expansion projects, are all indications that God is still pruning these trees so that they can
continue to yield more and more fruit.
There is no Fountain of Youth. However, if you want to live the abundant life, follow
the example of Bishop Thomas. Be available to God, follow His Will, love His people
and believe the best is yet to come.

WOMEN OF FAITH: REDEEMED, ROOTED AND RECONCILED
Sister Angela Smith
CELEBRATING WOMEN OF ALL AGES, ALL STAGES
By: Theresa M. Smith
New Psalmist Baptist Church
celebrated Women’s Day on
Sunday, May 1, 2016. The guest
preacher was Dr. Carolyn Knight,
President and founder of “Can
Do!” Ministries. Her sermon
message was “Built For The Road
Ahead”
Several events leading up to the
church wide celebration of women
of All Ages, All Stages were hosted
by the Destiny Women’s Ministry.
A year of transformation focusing
on “Becoming the Me That God
Sees” united the women of the
church to celebrate what God is
doing in their lives, their families
and what their hope is for the
future. Activities and sermons to
awaken our desire to embrace
spiritual and personal awareness
were designed to renew and
ignite actions toward significant
changes needed to become alive
and whole during our spiritual
journey.
8
Activities included Saturday small
group discussions centered
around the book “The Gift of Being
Yourself” (Author David G. Benner),
Women in Worship with Dr. Karen
S. Bethea, Pastor of Set The
Captives Free Ministries, Saturday
Morning Cafe Conversations and
“Jammin in Jeans”, a fun night
of dancing, fellowship and fun.
The hope of the ministry was
that these activities will stimulate
women to renew themselves and
their passion for spiritual growth
through Bible study, prayer,
meditation, conversations with
God, and each other.
For the spirit God gave us does
not make us timid, but gives us
power, love and self-discipline.
2Timothy 1:7 NIV
The Destiny Women’s Ministry,
exist under the leadership of
Sister Angela Smith, MS,LLPC
who also serves as the church’s
Director of Pastoral Counseling.
The ministry’s activities cover a
varied range of social and spiritual
educational training. It has been a
rich part of New Psalmist Baptist
Church for many years and has
hosted Conventions, Workshops,
Ladies Night Out, and Book Clubs
to spiritually encourage, empower
and connect women within the
walls of NPBC as well as women
around the city of Baltimore. I had
an opportunity to talk with “Sister
Angela” about the ministry and
how it fits into Bishop Thomas’s
“Radical Transformation” vision for
the church.
EDM: Sister Angela you have
encouraged, inspired, and
ministered to the women of NPBC
for many years. How long has it
been and when did you realize
this was your passion?
My passion for women’s ministry
was ignited while serving under
the leadership of Dr. Leah E. White
at “the old church” on Franklin
and Cathedral in the early 1990’s.
When she was called to pastor, I
was asked to serve as the ministry
leader.
serve to make those plans happen
– serving as registrars, greeters,
presenters, and facilitators, or
whatever needs to be done.
7. EDM: As a final note what would
you like to say to the women
reading this article who may not
be familiar with this ministry?
1. EDM: What did you do before
joining the staff of NPBC?
4. EDM: How do you feel your
ministry fits in with Bishop Thomas’s
“Radical Transformation” initiative
for the church? How has God used
the women’s ministry to make life
better for someone else within the
church and or community?
My sisters in Christ, I invite you to
actively participate in women’s
ministry activities. As women,
we are uniquely created to
thrive in relationship. It is our
fuel for healthy living. Without
relationship, we seek other means
to satisfy that need. The women’s
ministry provides opportunities
to grow, make connections, and
build relationship with God and
others.
I have held management
positions for Job Corps, a
national job training program
of the Department of Labor.
However, just prior to joining the
New Psalmist staff, I was a health
administrator for the Baltimore
City Health Department and an
independent consultant.
2. EDM: What is the purpose of
the ministry and what does the
name Destiny Women mean?
As our mission statement outlines,
our women’s ministry exist to
foster spiritual growth, promote
unity and empower women to
walk confidently in their God
given purpose. Destiny Women
are women who are seeking to
live their fullest God-potential.
3. EDM: Do you have other women
who help lead the ministry?
Absolutely! The mission is too great
for any one person. Our women’s
ministry has been dynamic and
impactful because over the years
there have been teams of women
who have served with passion,
commitment and dedication in a
myriad of capacities. Our planning
council develops plans for the
various ministry encounters that
are offered throughout the year.
The council along with at-large
ministry members and volunteers
As ministry liaison, it is my
responsibility to ensure alignment
between Bishop’s vison and the
ministry experiences offered to
the congregation. With that said,
we seek to provide opportunities
for empowerment, healing and
becoming not solely through the
sharing of biblical knowledge
but more importantly through
the demonstration of the love of
Jesus Christ by accepting, caring
and relationship.
6. EDM: What do you like to do to
relax and unwind when you are
not busy planning activities or
encouraging others?
History Note: The first National
Women’s Day was observed in
the United States on February
28, 1909 in honor of the 1908
garment workers’ strike in
New York. Women protested
against working conditions .
Today women are celebrated
in many countries around the
world. They are recognized for
their achievements regardless
of national, ethic, linguistic,
cultural, economic or political
differences. It is an occasion to
look back on their past struggles
and accomplishments and to
look ahead at their potential for
opportunities that await their
own future and that of younger
women of future generations.
Visit UN.org/events/women
I love reading, long rides through
the countryside, bowling and
enjoying the company of friends
and family, especially SeanGabriel and Kameron, my
grandsons.
Today Women’s Day is observed
in most churches in the U.S. At
least one Sunday a year is set
aside to honor the women of
their congregation
5. EDM: What is your favorite
scripture that encourages you the
most in your leadership role?
And what does the Lord require
of you? To walk justly and to love
mercy and to walk humbly with
your God. Micah 6:8

MEN’S
DAY
The men of New Psalmist enjoyed their time during the Season of Celebration.
One of the highlights was the tailgate party held before the Orioles game. The
men of the church had a great time fellowshipping, playing cards, and catching
up before attending a ballgame. The next day was Men’s Day. The men of the
church took the lead and were celebrated all day. To top it off, Men’s day was
on Father’s day. Wht an awesome way to celebrate the men of the church.

Mother’s Day
HONOREES & CELEBRATION
By: Emma Sellers
Mothers Day is a cherished holiday by many. This year recognition was given to three women of the
church. Nomination forms were sent to all ministries for all members to nominate NPBC women who
displayed any of the following attributes:
1. Impacts a large portion of our congregation.
2. A mothering spirit: loving, caring, selfless, humble, appreciative, prayerful, industrious and wise.
3. Does not have to have children of her own but embodies a mothering spirit.
Three nominees were selected by Bishop Thomas and honored on Mother’s Day 2016:
CONGRATULATIONS MOTHER’S DAY SALUTE WINNERS!
Deaconess Pearl Copeland
Minister Mary Thomas
Sister Betty Clark
Deaconess Pearl Copeland, nonagenarian, met all of the attributes of a mothering spirit. While
she has no biological children of her own, she has been quoted saying, “my church family are my
children.” She has a passion for prayer and is a real prayer warrior. She enjoys reading and attending
yoga classes. Deaconess Copeland has served on the usher board and the Nurses Ministry with pride.
She is a member of her housing cooperative board where she was a previous president. Deaconess
Pat Moore presented her award at the 7:15 a.m. worship service.
12
Minister Mary Thomas, a member of NPBC since 1970 and humble woman of God, has impacted a
large portion of the congregation through her gifts of compassion, laughter, listening and teaching.
Many who have crossed her path have been blessed. She serves with the Women’s Ministry, Prison
Ministry and Prayer Ministry. She is guided by the Word of God as the absolute truth. Sister Joi
Ketchem presented her award at the 12:00 p.m. service.
Empowering Disciples Magazine | Volume 08
Sister Betty Clark, faithful member of the Prayer Ministry’s
Intercessory “Touch” Team for more than 30 years, has all
elements of a mothering spirit. She attends Bible Study on
Wednesdays and she’s a prayer warrior who intercedes
on behalf of others at Friday night intercessory prayer
sessions. Minister Darlene Gilbert presented her award
at the 9:30 a.m. worship service.
Also at the 9:30 a.m. service, First Lady and Deaconess
Patricia Thomas was honored as a gifted woman of God,
and a loving and supportive wife and mother, humble
leader and mothering spirit attributes. Her son, Minister
Joshua Thomas, presented her award.
Chair-Lady and Deaconess Rosa Williams was
recognized at the 12:00 p.m. service for her leadership
and impact on the NPBC congregation. She embodies a
mothering spirit with her loving, appreciative and prayerful
attributes. Deaconess Clara Connor presented her award.
The scripture that best describes each of these women
is Proverbs 31:25-31.
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at
the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful
instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs
of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also,
and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but
you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty
is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be
praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and
let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM
By: Jabari Walker
GRADUATION
You are the light of the world … let your light shine before others, that they may
see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven. – Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)
On May 26, 2016, 170 graduates of NPBC’s
Discipleship Program marched into the sanctuary
behind their class banner to the “Pomp and
Circumstance” tune. The Class of 2016 were the
very first to wear traditional graduation gowns.
The three-year Discipleship Program was first
established in 1984 by Bishop Thomas with
a group of seven men. Under the current
leadership of Reverend Monique Lemmon, it is a
structured ministry designed to be an investment
in members’ spiritual growth and exploration of
the gifts God has put inside each of us. Similar to
the three-year journey that the twelve disciples
took with Jesus Christ, this discipleship journey
promises to be beneficial, empowering and life
changing - but not easy.
Each student is seen as a disciple in training.
As disciples in training, class members are
expected to attend weekly classes on time
with recorded attendance, learn principles for
Christian living, memorize key scriptures, engage
in class assignments and discussions through
guidebooks, and attend monthly Discipleship
worship services. One of the key components
of Discipleship Class is passing multiple ‘sword
drills’ each year, which are tests to examine the
14
students understanding of lessons and ability to
write scriptures from memory.
By the third year, students are expected to know
the five biblical assurances, lead a discipleship
worship service, and complete a class outreach
project such as ministering to the homeless or
adopting a family for Christmas. “I enjoyed my
time in Discipleship and the spiritual growth I
experienced. I also developed life long bonds
and friendships. I thought that if I could help
someone else grow and develop the way I did,
then that was the ministry for me,” said Darryl
Williford, a 2011 Discipleship graduate and now
a Discipleship Program class administrator.
Students ultimately walk away knowing their
charge in God’s kingdom and that all are created
with spiritual gifts to be used for His service.
Graduates of the Discipleship Program are
encouraged to join NPBC’s Leadership School,
become involved in other church ministries and
shine God’s light before others.
The 2016/2017 Discipleship Ministry is underway!
Go to newpsalmist.org to get more information.
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received
to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its
various forms. – 1 Peter 4:10

MINISTERS’ ORDINATION
By: Daryn Ramsey

Empowering Disciples Magazine | Volume 08
Lemmon • Mitchner • Owens • Rantin
The elders that direct the affairs of the church well are worthy
of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and
teaching. – 1 Timothy 5:17 (NIV)
A new page was turned and yet
another significant and historical
event took place at The New
Psalmist Baptist Church, Baltimore,
MD. On April 8, 2016, four of the
churches beloved ministers were
elevated and ordained into the
gospel ministry of Jesus Christ.
Ministers Monique Lemmon,
Nevaor Mitchner, Darryl Owens,
and Jackie Rantin were ordained
into the Gospel Ministry by Bishop
Walter Scott Thomas, Sr., Pastor of
the New Psalmist Baptist Church
and Presiding Prelate of the
Kingdom Association of Covenant
Pastors (KACP). The spirit of the
Lord was eminent in the chapel of
the church in which the ordination
took place. It was a beautiful
sight to see, as people and
clergy showed up to support and
recognize the elevation of these
four ministers and acknowledge
the many years of study, sacrifice,
faithfulness and dedication.
The ordination event marks a point
of officially recognizing the calling,
and work of God in qualified
individuals. At the beginning of the
ordination service, Bishop Thomas
gave a concise explanation of
the qualifications for ordination.
Ordinands have to meet three core
requirements. The first requirement
is educational by which ordinands
are required to have either a
Master in Divinity (M.Div.) or a
Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree.
Secondly, they have to exhibit
the qualities that are evident of
a minister who has undoubtedly
and indeed been called by God
to the ministry. Lastly, and most
importantly, ordinands have to
exhibit excellence in service – their
exceptional service is indication of
God’s elevation of them and being
set apart for ministry.
Although ordination is certainly a
great achievement, it is not the
end. Quite the reverse, it is a new
beginning of lifelong learning and
serving the Lord. Ordination comes
with more responsibility, greater
expectations and a different set of
challenges. The ordinands were
advised that after the ordination,
“people will be watching them
closely.” At the same time, a new
level of maturity will be needed
to overcome challenges and the
burden of a more substantive role
serving the Lord’s church. Ministers
were encouraged to not be selfish
with the calling that God has given
them. They are to use their gifts,
training and abilities to serve
the New Psalmist Baptist Church
and the Kingdom Association of
Covenant Pastors (KACP).
The ordinands had the opportunity
to speak about their catechism
experience and thank their
supporters to include family,
friends, and colleagues. In the
same way, the ordinands honored
and acknowledged Bishop Thomas
for the influence that he has had
on their lives, and ministerial
development. To be under the
tutelage of Bishop Walter Scott
Thomas Sr. is a privilege and honor
and to have him as a spiritual father
in the ministry is tremendous. The
candidates also expressed their
gratitude for Rev. Walter Scott
Thomas Jr., Pastor of the First
Baptist Church of Steelton, PA and
former Director of Ministries at
New Psalmist as their catechizer
in preparation for ordination. They
articulated the superb quality of his
training and the sacrifices that he
made, traveling from Pennsylvania
often to prepare them for the
ordination council. Based on the
stringent requirements and the
spirit and zeal in the chapel, it is
apparent the new reverends are
ready and able to minister at a
deeper and higher level. This is
good news for the New Psalmist
Baptist Church who has grown
accustomed to spreading the good
news, serving the people of God,
and executing ministry at the Five
Star* level.

SERVICE FOR JOSHUA AARON THOMAS
“. . . Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid;
do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
“. . . Only be strong and courageous!” – Joshua 1:9, 18 (NIV)
By: Daryn Ramsey
It was a great evening at the Holy
City of Zion. On Friday, May 27,
2016, the saints came to celebrate
a Service of Ordination and
witness the elevation that God
has placed on NPBC’s very own,
Minister Joshua Aaron Thomas.
This historic occasion was near
and dear to the hearts of many
who have watched the growth
and development of Minister
Thomas over the years. The day
started off rocky. The power
went out at the church, and the
ordination council was forced to
convene in the dark. However,
Min. Joshua passed with flying
colors before the largest council
in New Psalmist history with
over 30 ordained Preachers and
Pastors in attendance.
18
Bishop Walter Scott Thomas, Sr.,
father of the ordinand, proudly
led the charge preaching a
powerful sermon that was filled
with wisdom, humility, candor,
and history. Later, Bishop Thomas
explained the connection with the
sermon and Minister Thomas’s
grandmother singing “It Pays to
Serve Jesus” at Bishop Thomas’s
own ordination in 1975. Ordination
marks a major event on the New
Psalmist Church calendar.
Surely God knew before the
foundations of the world, that
Joshua Aaron Thomas would
preach and teach the good
news of our Lord Jesus Christ. He
would follow God and his family
into the work of the ministry. His
ministry would be unique and
fitting for the times that he was
called to minister.
Perfect timing to minister to a
generation that is technologically
savvy and an older generation
that wants to stay relevant. He
would be ordained into the full
gospel ministry for such a time
as this.
Minister Thomas successfully
appeared before the Ordination
Council and enters ordained
ministry equipped with the
lineage, education, and
ministerial experience to serve
as a highly effective leader. He
graduated from Temple University,
Philadelphia, PA receiving a
Bachelors of Art degree in Film
and Media Arts, and the United
Theological Seminary, Dayton, OH
receiving a Master’s of Divinity,
Divinity/Ministry.
A major part of the ordination
service is the charge that is
given by selected ordained
ministers to the ordinand.
Even seasoned ministers need
to be publicly counseled and
cautioned by those that have
gone before them to chart the
course and give a lay of the land
in ministry. Ordained ministers
shed light on their experiences
and rollout the expectations in
doing the Lord’s work.
19
Empowering Disciples Magazine | Volume 08
Dr. A.C.D. Vaughn, Pastor of the
Sharon Baptist Church, Baltimore,
MD, was instrumental in the
charge – speaking and advising
from the prospective of being
considered the Dean of Preachers
in the City of Baltimore and the
godfather of Minister Thomas.
Reverend Joshua Aaron Thomas
thanked God and then everyone for
being there during the entire process.
He especially thanked his family for
their sacrifice and allowing him to
make sacrifices to prepare for the
ordination council. He especially
thanked his family for their sacrifice
and allowing him to make sacrifices
to prepare for the ordination council.
20
Reverend Walter Scott Thomas,
Jr., Pastor of the First Baptist
Church of Steelton, PA, was
the catechizer leading Minister
Thomas through the process of
ordination. Dr. William Curtis,
Pastor of Mt. Ararat Baptist
Church, Pittsburgh, PA, charged
the ordinand advising that ministry
is about relationships and not
seclusion. Dr. Curtis encouraged
Minister Thomas to understand his
time in ministry and to shape his
message and focus in relation to
what the needs of the people are
in these times. He also advised
to help people by standing in the
gap and to minister in the way
that God called him to, not the
way Bishop, Lady Thomas, Joi or
Walter, Jr. would.
Dr. Charles E. Booth, Senior Pastor
of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church
in Columbus, OH, presented the
Prayer of Ordination and invited
all ordained ministers to surround
Minister Joshua Thomas, laying
hands upon his head to pray for
him. During the prayer, Dr. Booth
recognized that this was a new
chapter for Minister Thomas’s life
and ministry, and that God knew
that this day would come.
Dr. Ronald C. Williams, Pastor of
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church,
Baltimore, MD, gave the Right
Hand of Fellowship welcoming
the new Reverend Joshua
Aaron Thomas into the ordained
gospel ministry and instructed
that he continue to serve the
poor in spirit. Dr. Reginald
Thomas Sr., Pastor of the Greater
Gethsemane Missionary Baptist
Church, Baltimore, MD, made
the Presentation of the Hymnal
suggesting that we all need songs
that help us get through the dark
and trying times. He stated that
both Reverend Thomas’s mother
and grandmother sang Hymns and
Psalms from the Hymnal. Bishop
Thomas thanked Reverend Walter
Scott Thomas, Jr. for serving as
the catechist and presented
Reverend Joshua Aaron Thomas
to those in attendance as an
ordained minister of the gospel.
Reverend Joshua Aaron Thomas
thanked God and then everyone
for being there during the entire
process. He especially thanked
his family for their sacrifice and
allowing him to make sacrifices to
prepare for the ordination council.
He thanked his parents for being
great role models and taking
ministry seriously. He thanked
his mother, First Lady Patricia
Thomas, for showing him how to
cultivate a relationship with God
by her examples at home and
not just in church. He thanked
his father, Bishop Walter Scott
Thomas, Sr., for being an example
of what ordained ministry should
look like and recommending him
for ordination. He thanked his
brother, Reverend Walter Scott
Thomas, Jr., for the words of
reassurance that he was ready
for the council. Reverend Joshua
Aaron Thomas also thanked his
team members for their support:
Reverends Monique Lemmon,
Darryl Owens, Jackie Rantin,
and Nevaor Mitchner, who were
ordained in April 2016.
Just as the Doxology states,
“Praise God, from whom all
blessings flow!” It is quite evident
that the blessings are flowing to
and through the Thomas family.
During the ordination service,
Rev. Thomas was encouraged to
be “bold” in ministry. In the same
way the Bible declares the Lord
said to Joshua, “Be strong and
courageous, be strong and very
courageous!” The Ruebenites,
Gadites and half-tribe of
Manasseh later reinforced what
the Lord had already commanded
Joshua saying, “Only be strong
and courageous!”
Boldness and courageousness
are the confidence that
ministers of the Lord should
have when they know that
God is with them. After all, God
said to Joshua, No one will be
able to stand against you all the
days of your life. As I was with
Moses, so I will be with you; I
will never leave you nor forsake
you - (Joshua 1:5, NIV).

Bishop and Lady Thomas’
4O WEDDING
ANNIVERSARY
th
By: Joi Thomas
May 15, 1976 was a special day in the life of our Pastor and First
Lady. It was the day they were joined in Holy matrimony at New
Shiloh Baptist Church. Forty years later, they are more in love than
they have ever been. As a church family we celebrated them with
a reception during their wedding anniversary weekend. More than
400 people filled the banquet hall to show our Pastor and First
Lady just how much we love them and how happy we are for them.
When asked what were some of the things they wanted to do to
celebrate this milestone, Bishop Thomas replied, “We want to
celebrate with the people we love the most, our New Psalmist
family.” With that said, a committee was formed and we went to
work creating an experience we hoped they would never forget
and from their expression when they walked in the door, our goals
were met.
The reception was decorated in their wedding colors of yellow
and mint green. There were pictures placed all around from their
wedding day, giving us a personal look back into their special day.
Bishop and First Lady were also surprised by members of their
wedding party who were in attendance. at the reception! It was a
joy to experience it. I know they are excited and looking forward
to another 40 years of marital bliss.

A Season for Young Adults
Empowering Disciples Magazine | Volume 08
By: Gregory Logan
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the
believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. - 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV)
It was a season of All White celebrations in honor
of NPBC’s young adults!
The F5 Group, aimed at individuals between ages 34
and 45, held a Starlight Soiree White Party on May 27
at The Forest Park Clubhouse. Fans of old school hip
hop, club and house music “got it in!”
The M2 Ministry includes individuals aged 18 to 33 who
seek to live a life that is pleasing to God. The M2 White
Party Diner En Blanc was held June 3 at NPBC. This
millennial group enjoyed a night of dancing, food, and
making connections!
Young Adult Day worship services were held on June
4th. One of the highlights of the service occurred when
the congregation’s attention was directed to the large
video screens on either side of the pews to hear Tayvon
Woodward, a NPBC young adult member, testify about
how the Lord changed and moved in his life.
Mr. Woodward grew up in Baltimore City. He had been
raised in the Pentecostal Church and was taught to quote
scripture from memory. He said he enlisted in military
service at age 21.
24
At that point he rebelled and told himself he didn’t
need God and would run his life by himself. However,
upon leaving the military and returning to Baltimore he
experienced a series of setbacks, including losing his
marriage, his car and his home.
Mr. Woodward recalled that at this low point in his life,
“something happened.” One Sunday, he “gave up.” He
was in tears as he cried out to God, “I need you right
now!” He subsequently became a member of New
Psalmist Baptist Church.
Mr. Woodward spoke glowingly on how his life “changed
completely” for the better after he turned his life over
to God. He received a promotion, an engagement to
be married, and now has a great relationship with his
children.
The Young Adult Day speaker was a young adult minister
named, Dr. Phillip Pointer, pastor of the St. Mark Baptist
Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. He drew a powerful
analogy using the marketing slogan, New and Improved,
when becoming a new person through faith. He stated
that the slogan is contradictory because a thing cannot
be improved upon if it is new.
Dr. Poiter concluded, “Improved sinners do not qualify
for heaven. God is not in the improvement business. We
need to be made completely new. Jesus has come to
transform us into something new in character, outlook
and essence.”

THE MOMENT OF
TRUTH
This summer, The Fine Arts Ministry presented the
play “The Moment of Truth” written and directed by
Joi Thomas. It is the story of the Newman family, very
high profile in their church, but behind closed doors
we see that their family is falling apart. The audience
sees this family and their breaking point and how
the church and power of prayer intervene to save
them. The play was held at The Arena Players, which
is the longest operating African American Theater
in the country. Everyone who attended was able
to find their Moment of Truth and apply it to their
lives. It was a wonderful way to celebrate our 117th
Church Anniversary and the bond we share as a
church family.
