Sunquest heads south, WestJet heads
east and clients get more flight options
TORONTO — With its new U.S. gateways
program Sunquest is hoping to tap the estimated five million Canadians who cross
the border every year for cheaper airfares.
Meanwhile WestJet is using Dublin as
a test case for European expansion with
new flights out of St. John’s and Toronto
(see next story).
Offering 26 new routes out of Buffalo,
NY, Burlington, VT, Detroit, MI, Bangor, ME
and Bellingham, WA, to 14 U.S. destinations
and 12 Caribbean and Mexico destinations,
Sunquest says its new service is a natural extension of its product offering.

are available from the U.S., Canadians will

they clearly want, which is an option to

cross-border packages with a reputable
Canadian company and paying for it in
Canadian dollars.”
Sunquest will partner with several carriers for the flights, including American
Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways
Corp. and Delta Air Lines.
Three out of four U.S. border city packages are cheaper than the equivalent Canadian package, says DeMarinis. Sunquest’s
examples include Buffalo to Punta Cana,
from $1,096 per person, including taxes, for
a seven-night package at the Ocean Sand
by H10. The $826 per couple in savings is
based on the equivalent flight from Toronto departing on Dec. 8, 2013.
Agents will earn regular Sunquest
commission on the packages.
Will the program fly? One Toronto
agent said her clients “will not do crossborder for a package”.
Another Toronto agent, Linda Josimovic,
Branch Manager with Marlin Travel at Bay

Asked if WestJet plans to add to its
European network, Brie Ogle, Media
Relations, WestJet, said Dublin “is really a chance for us to learn more about
transatlantic flying, rather than a means
to establish ourselves in the European
market. We have a history of slow and
steady progression and this method has
served us well for nearly 18 years. New
seasonal service to Dublin is going to be
a great learning experience, and we will
evaluate from there.”
She adds that the market from Atlantic Canada – where more than 20% of
residents claim Irish ancestry – has a lot
of potential.
“Expanding new service is something
we have demonstrated that we excel at:
introducing new markets with lower fares
through our winter and summer schedule deployments. Because we are always
looking for ways to optimize the network
schedule, we can try initiatives like this to
see if it works. If it does, as we anticipate,
then it’s important learning we can add to
our tool kit. If it’s not, it’s a low-risk, lowinvestment opportunity that we tried to
leverage. Our guests, our shareholders and
our WestJetters expect that from us.”
Will there be Europe packages with
WestJet Vacations? The airline wants to
get the new summer service under its
belt before it starts getting into the vacation side of things, said Ogle.

MIAMI — Carnival Cruise Lines is introducing an enhanced affinity group
program offering attractive new group
rates and complimentary amenities
for top selling individual fares booked
into groups, making it easier for travel
agents to highlight the value of affinity
group cruises to their clients.
The enhanced program, which is effective for all sailings departing on or after Feb. 1, 2014, is a result of travel agent
feedback from recent Carnival Conversations events.
“Building strong affinity group business
is one of the most lucrative earning opportunities for travel agents,” said Mike

Julius, Carnival’s senior managing director
of U.S. trade sales. “We’re excited to make
it easier than ever for agents to book this
valuable business by introducing very
attractive group rates and adding more
value through the inclusion of amenities
for our top selling fares.”
With the new changes, Fun Select,

fares all receive tour conductor credits
if booked into a group.
As part of this launch, Carnival is offering complimentary amenity points
on promotional fares through the end
of February 2014.
New group fares begin at $259 for
three- to five-day cruises and $459 for
voyages of six days or longer.

700 agents already registered, Cruise

As part of the 10th year celebration,

“Cruise3sixty is all about CLIA and
its member lines delivering unmatched
value to our agent and agency members
as well as to our suppliers, exhibitors

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul
Hilton provides central locations and
upscale amenities in Turkey
by Cindy Sosroutomo
With its incredible scenery, hospitable people and ancient history,
Turkey has become known as one of
the world’s most desirable destinations. In fact, it’s so hard to resist that
droves of travellers arrive throughout the year — not just in summer
months — to experience the country
for themselves.
Travelweek had the pleasure of visiting this age-old destination earlier
this fall as part of a press trip hosted
by Turkish Airlines and INTRA Tours
DMC, considered one of the longestestablished ground handling agents
and destination management companies in Turkey. The trip had several
purposes: to prove how easy it is for
Canadians to get to Turkey with Turkish Airlines’ direct service, to highlight
some of the country’s most popular
attractions and cities, and to prove
that any time is a good time to visit.
The trip visited Istanbul and Izmir,
and included highlights like the ancient
city of Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary, the 6th-century Hagia Sophia
and the 17th-century imperial Blue
Mosque. Travelling from one site to another was made easier due to centrally
located hotels, all of which belonged to
the Hilton portfolio.
The Hilton Izmir is located close
to the Old Town, within walking
distance of shopping and entertainment. Spanning 34 floors, the hotel
is one of the tallest buildings in the
region, offering superior views of the
mountains, city or the bay in every
single guestroom and suite. Guests
can also choose an executive room
for private key access to the Executive Lounge featuring complimentary
facilities and refreshments.
Other hotel amenities and facilities include events space featuring 16
meeting rooms and a grand ballroom,
an award-winning restaurant on the
31st floor, a fitness center, heated
indoor pool, squash, tennis courts,
exercise classes, walking track and
paddle table tennis.
While in Istanbul, accommodation
was provided by the Conrad Istanbul,
which was recently recognized as the
‘Best Meeting Hotel in Istanbul’ at
the Meeting, Incentive, Congress and
Event Awards 2012, which took place
earlier this year. Enjoying a prime location in the city centre, the hotel is one
of the most ideally situated hotels in
the European side of the city. It boasts
14 floors and 590 contemporary guestrooms, including 484 Deluxe rooms,
71 Executive rooms and 35 Suites, all
with views of the Bosphorus.
Business clients can take full advantage of the hotel’s conference centre,
which covers 3,000 square metres and
comprises two ballrooms, 27 multipurpose meeting rooms, a 24-hour busi-
s p otligh t Europe - Off Season
ness centre and the Panoramic Terrace
for special events. Conrad Istanbul also
recently debuted the Meze Grill on the
M floor. Diners can enjoy elegant Turkish
cuisine such as Circassian chicken salad
and stuffed vine leaves, all prepared by
Executive Chef Alexis Atlamazoglu.
Travelweek also visited other Hilton
properties during the trip, including the
Hilton ParkSA Istanbul. This particular
hotel enjoys a location that’s only 45 minutes from Ataturk International Airport,
20 minutes from the Osmanbey metro
station, and only a quick walk to the Bosphorus ferry port at Besiktas. Guests of
the hotel enjoy fine dining at Cloud 7 Restaurant on the 7th floor, elegant meeting
space, free Internet access for up to 30
minutes in the business centre, marble
bathrooms and complimentary breakfast
overlooking the trees of Macka Park in
the Executive Lounge.
Also an option for travellers is the
Hilton Istanbul, now in its 57th year.
This property enjoys the distinction of
being the first five-star hotel in Turkey
and the longest-serving international
Hilton hotel outside the U.S. Guests
will find spacious rooms with private
balconies and lush gardens, and will
appreciate its close proximity to bustling Taksim, art museums and the
famed nightlife along the Bosphorus.
Turkish Airlines recently announced
additional frequency to Toronto as
well as the addition of a second Canadian gateway — Montreal — beginning June, 3, 2014. Istanbul-Montreal
flights are planned as three flights per
week. Istanbul-Toronto now flies six
times per week.

Another surprise awaited the passenger onboard — the entire crew congratulated him on behalf of the airline
and offered all passengers to mark the
event with a glass of champagne.
“Today we celebrate a landmark
event — the carriage of UIA’s 20 millionth passenger,” said Miroshnikov.
“This figure shows that during almost
21 years of successful operations on the
Ukrainian and international aviation
markets, the airline managed to win
trust of numerous clients from Ukraine,
Europe, the Middle East and the CIS.
We congratulate our jubilee 20 millionth passenger and wish him, as well
as each and every UIA client, adventurous trips, positive emotions and a comfortable stay onboard UIA flights.”
UIA operates nonstop flights to over 70
destinations. Its fleet consists of 37 modern aircraft. Between the period of January to September 2012, UIA carried 3.47
million passengers, an increase of nearly
60% since 2012. UIA expects to carry 4.5
million passengers by end of this year.

Gdansk without the
summer crowds
There’s nothing like long lineups and
large crowds to ruin a vacation, which
is why Europe during the fall and winter months not only makes for a more
comfortable visit but also one that’s
more economical.
Less tourists, better deals and lower rates are typical of these slower
months, all of which mean greater savings and lasting memories for travellers.
ATOURZ offers an array of Europe itineraries during fall and winter, including
the four-day ‘Gdansk Explorer’.
Ideal for a stopover or a pre- or postvisit tacked onto river cruises or multicity stays, the ‘Gdansk Explorer’ perfectly
highlights one of Poland’s most beautiful cities. With accommodations at the
Novotel Centrum or similar, the itinerary begins with a private half-day tour

River and the Monument to Solidarity
providing plenty of photo ops. The itinerary also includes a private excursion

Palace Resorts enhances credit promo,
unveils new amenities and events
by Cindy Sosroutomo
Palace Resorts, which comprises seven
all-inclusive luxury resorts in the Mexican Caribbean, has announced new updates to its popular Resort Credit promotion, making it the most valuable
vacation promo on record.
Guests who book a stay of three
nights or more can take advantage of
the company’s $1,500 Resort Credit,
which can be used on spa and beauty
treatments, golf outings, private romantic dinners, upgraded wine lists,
dolphin swims, scuba diving, zip-ling,
off-site excursions and much more.
The promo begins on Dec. 24 and is
accessible via a branded card. Guests
who do not utilize all their Resorts Credits can roll the cash value over to subsequent stays at any of Palace Resorts’
seven oceanfront properties. Additionally, they can now gift the accrued cash
value of the credits to friends or family who plan on visiting Palace Resorts
in the future. Resort credits become
exchangeable two weeks following the
transferring parties’ stay at any Palace
Resorts property, and the resort credit
cash value balance is redeemable for up
to 12 months after the original stay.
Applicable resort credits vary on
length of stay and are applied per
room/per stay. Guests who stay five to
eight nights will receive up to $1,500 in
resort credit, four nights will get up to
$750, while three nights receive up to
$500. Guests staying nine to 11 nights
will receive up to $2,000 resort credit,
and 12 nights or more receive up to
$2,500 in credit.
In the spirit of offering valued guests
the highest quality amenities and services, Palace Resorts recently unveiled a
new 11,000 square-foot spa at Playacar
Palace and a new lavish yacht called Casanova at Isla Mujeres Palace. The yacht
transports guests seamlessly from the

The Israel Specialist Learning Centre is
an online educational tool for travel agents
that should take about 90 minutes to
complete. Agents will learn about selling
Israel; cities and regions; faith-based travel;
art & culture; niche experiences and agent
information. Upon completion, agents will
be fully prepared to sell this dynamic destination with confidence, supporting their
bottom line.
Haim Gutin-Golan, Commissioner for
North & South America, says “we may not
have beaches like the Bahamas and Costa
Rica, but we have something that enriches
your soul and mind, experiences that inspire your beliefs. We have so much to offer, the challenge now is to show people”.
Education is an extremely important factor for agents looking to sell a
destination like Israel. There are many
important selling features as Israel becomes an increasingly dynamic destination, while faith-based travel requires
an extra level of understanding.
“It’s difficult to sell a product when you
don’t know much about it,” say Gutin-Golan. “But agents need to know that Israel is
an incredibly lucrative destination to sell,
especially for groups. We hope this Learning Centre will help them see that.”

Cuba Cruise’s shore excursions can now be
reserved ahead of its inaugural sailing next month
The summer season may be a thing of the past but that doesn’t
mean travellers still can’t enjoy a bit of sunshine during the winter
months. Cuba Cruise is answering the call from sun-seekers with its
highly anticipated inaugural sailing on Dec. 16.
In anticipation of the milestone event, guests can now reserve
shore excursions from now until 48 hours in advance of their
Caribbean departure via the Cuba Cruise website or through an
agent. Cuba Cruise features a varied collection of authentic shore
excursions, catering to voyagers of all ages and interests.
“It’s that time of year when families, couples and friends are excitedly planning their winter holidays,” said Cuba Cruise president
Dugald Wells. “With pre-booking excursions, guests have the

peace of mind knowing they’ll not miss any Cuba highlights during
their voyage.”
Passengers can pre-book the following excursions: cultural/historical tours like the ‘Havana & Hemingway’ and ‘Bob Marley’ tours;
a visit to the surrounding islands and remote beach outings; six
UNESCO sites including the colonial village of Trinidad; a guided
tour of Havana in classic American automobiles; national parks;
diving and snorkelling; hiking; zip-lining, bamboo rafting; cigar
and rum factories; sugar and coffee plantations including the ruins
of French coffee plantations in Santiago de Cuba; and music and
dancing in Cuban hotspots like Havana. Other options include a
visit to cathedrals and castles, interacting with dolphins, enjoying
lobster dinners, playing a round of golf, embarking on a catamaran
trip or signing up for a jungle and mangrove tour.
To ensure that guests of all ages have just as much fun onboard as
they would on land, Cuba Cruise offers a roster of entertainment for
toddlers, teens and those in between. The inaugural sailing season
hosts a diverse collection of activities and special events designed to
engage its younger passengers with the lively Cuban culture.
“Our children’s program is an extension of what we’re all about,
enjoying the real Cuba in comfort and style,” added Wells. “I’m
a parent myself and I’m thrilled we can provide an opportunity
for young ones to engage with a vibrant culture in a fun, safe and
unique way.”
The Kids Club Room for ages four and up is equipped with an assortment of toys, games and craft supplies with qualified supervision (one host to every five kids), while the crystal clear deck
pool is designed for water play. Other activities available onboard
include salsa lessons, drum classes, Cuban-themed parties, face
painting, jewelry making, hair braiding, scavenger and treasure
hunts, bedtime stories, t-shirt decorating, talent contests, ceramic
painting and more.
Guests can join the seven-night cruise at either Havana or Montego Bay with a lead-in price of $586. Cuba Cruise features Canadian imported cuisine as well as local specialties, and explores
diverse ports such as Santiago, Cienfuegos, Trinidad and Punta
Frances on the Isle of Youth. By sailing onboard the 480-stateroom
boutique cruise ship Louis Cristal, passengers can access Cuba’s
more remote areas.
