Welcome to the GAP
Festival 2016
The Gap Festival is rooted in our thriving community with its wonderfully diverse and rich artistic
culture. It also reflects our love of the villages of Goring & Streatley, straddling the Thames in the
heart of the beautiful Goring Gap. We hope that the programme of events and workshops we
have put together will inspire you to have a go and be creative, and to experience and enjoy.
We want you to be as excited as we are by the inclusion of so many of our young and local
people: as performers, workshop leaders and audience goers. It has been a privilege to work on
this programme amongst so many talented people and to see it all take shape.
Patricia Williams, Artistic Director
Oscar Wilde began writing ‘An Ideal Husband’ when he lived in Goring for a short while.
Gyles Brandreth writes “As President of the Oscar Wilde Society and as the author of a series
of Victorian murder mysteries featuring Oscar Wilde, his world and the places he knew best, I
am honoured to be Patron of The Gap Festival. The Festival team has put together a wonderful
programme, so much to delight, entertain and educate. Sadly I can’t be there this year because
I am touring the country with my Word Power stage show, but I shall be cheering and tweeting
my support”

Berkshire Maestros Youth Concerts
These concerts promise a varied programme
of dynamic and vibrant performances by
talented young singers – to inspire and
motivate a new generation of music-makers.
Local children from Goring, South Stoke and
Streatley primary schools have been working
hard, practising the songs for this concert,
with guidance from Berkshire Maestros vocal
coaches. Today, for the first time, the three
local choirs and the county training choir, Berkshire Young Voices, come together for a final
workshop before the two afternoon concerts. For the children taking part and the audiences,
these outreach concerts provide first-hand experience of live music-making in a fun and
engaging environment with outstanding professional tuition from the Berkshire Maestros team.

Sponsored by
HAINES AND CO.
For this year’s Festival, the Goring Unplugged
team bring a superb selection of acts picked
from the cream of recent performances.
Goring Unplugged is not defined by any
musical style, it is not a Folk Club, Jazz
Club, or Blues Club, it’s an anything goes
musical event. Founded in April 2003, Goring
Unplugged is renowned for encouraging
local talent (young and old!) to play alongside
more established acts such as Amy’s Ghost
and Maddy Prior (Steeleye Span). Run by a
dedicated group of volunteers, ‘GU’ goes from
strength to strength. Come along and enjoy
the special atmosphere and great music.

The History of St Thomas’ Church and Priory
The parish church at Goring is the Gap’s oldest and most
distinguished building still in current use. For a thousand
years or more, villagers and the local gentry worshipped
in it, marked the great festivals and political events of
the time in it and were baptised, married and buried in
it and its grounds. For half of that time the site was also
home to a sprawling Augustinian priory whose presence
greatly influenced changes to the church building. This
illustrated talk will survey what is known and surmised
about the history of church and priory and will be
followed by a tour of some of its surviving treasures,
including things not normally accessible to visitors. Your
guide will be Dr Garry Alder, a retired university teacher
of International History and writer who lives in the village
and is a member of the church congregation. He has
written a fascinating history of Goring’s local church
and signed copies of this latest book will be available
for purchase.
Flying High
... let’s go fly a kite!
Look out for Facebook and website
updates and join us on top of
Lardon Chase and Lough Down,
or even by the Festival marquee!
FLASH MOB!
Get your groove on with MOMENTUM Street Dance and
be a part of the festival this year, with the underground
buzz of the Festival’s FLASH MOB! Join hundreds (we
hope!) of dancers - from kids to grandparents - learning
our simple yet funky routine, and then busting it out in
soulful style to the delighted surprise of festival goers.
Our routine can be learned anywhere, anytime! Laura
Green of Momentum Street Dance has choreographed a
routine for the Festival Flash Mob dance! Find it on the
Festival YouTube channel.
FLYING HIGH IN LOCAL SCHOOLS!
Our young people are the future creative talent of our villages and the Festival team has worked
closely with local schools to encourage creativity through an exciting and inspiring programme of
workshops and events. Berkshire Maestros will work with our primary school children to prepare
them for a big performance at the Festival, there’ll be origami workshops where children will create
birds, kites or insects, and all schools will be part of a flash mob dance spectacular. Imagine Poetry
for primary children, and a short story competition for older students – both around a Festival theme
- will let children unleash their imagination through words and we hope our film making challenge
will produce some stunning results. The schools’ work will be on display throughout the festival –
enjoy! See website for more details.
Our thanks to Edith Lucy Woodward Charitable Trust for sponsoring the Imagine Poetry programme

If you are already amongst her legions of admirers around the
world, you know you have something special in store. The
extraordinary Irish singer makes music that transcends genres
and crosses barriers. She has won every folk award going, but

the constraints and limitations of tradition.
Together with her husband and musical partner, Sam

musical path. Celebrated for entwining traditional and

performer. Cara Dillon is at the very top of her field.
Supporting Cara we have the extraordinary harmonies
of Jess Distill, Hannah Elizabeth and Kathy Pilkinton,

blockages and stuck energy in the body and mind and restore energy levels for

Songs About A Girl - Chris Russell in conversation,
and in tune, with Fiona Pearce
Chris Russell’s debut YA novel, Songs About A Girl, is a modern
love story about heartbreak, pop music and the power of teenage
obsession. It tells the story of sixteen-year-old aspiring photographer
Charlie Bloom, whose life spirals out of control when she is invited to
take backstage photos for a chart topping boyband and becomes caught
between the charms of its two star members. The event will include
a Q&A, led by Fiona Pearce of Croft & Pearce, live performances of
songs from the novel and a meet-and-greet with the author. Although
aimed primarily at a 13+ audience, the event will also appeal to some
of Chris’s younger fans and everyone is welcome!
About the author: Chris Russell grew up in Goring. His first book,
Mockstars, was based on life with his band The Lightyears. Songs
About A Girl, the first in a trilogy, will be published by Hodder in July
2016. “Chris is a rock star, all tight trousers and flowing locks, and
he writes like a rock star. Songs About A Girl is going to hit summer
2016 like Led Zep at Knebworth.” – Literary agent, Ed Wilson

ISY SUTTIE
Award-winning comedian, writer, songwriter and actress Isy Suttie will
make you laugh out loud with tales from her book, The Actual One (How
I tried, and failed, to remain twenty-something for ever). You might know
Isy as Dobby from TV’s Peep Show, but if you’ve listened to her award
winning Radio 4 series Love Letters, you’ll recognise her engaging,
rambling storytelling style. Daft, funny, entertaining & wise, expect a mix
of songs, stories and stand-up.
The Actual One.
Isy woke up one day in her late twenties to discover that the invisible deal she’d done
with her best mates - that they’d prolong growing up for as long as possible - had all
been in her head. Everyone around her is suddenly into mortgages, farmers’ markets
and nappies, rather than the idea of running naked into the sea or getting hammered
in Plymouth with eighty year- old men. When her dearest friend advises her that the
next guy Isy meets will be The Actual One, Isy decides to keep delaying the onset of
adulthood - until a bet with her mother results in a mad scramble to find a boyfriend
within a month. From papier-mâché penguins to being stranded on a dual carriageway
in nothing but a fur coat and trainers, THE ACTUAL ONE is an ode to the confusing
wilderness of your late twenties, alongside a quest for a genuinely good relationship
with a man who doesn’t use moisturiser. Isy Suttie has also appeared in TV’s
Shameless and Skins, regularly performs to live audiences and has been nominated
for a British Comedy Award three times. She has written for Red, Glamour, the
Guardian and the Observer.

Oscar Wilde and The Trial of the Century
In the summer of 1893, Oscar Wilde stayed at Ferry House in Goring
with Lord Alfred Douglas and began writing his play ‘An Ideal Husband’
which includes the character Lord Goring. The scandalous events
of that Summer were to haunt him two years later when he fatally
sued the Marquess of Queensberry (Lord Alfred’s father) for criminal
libel. So what happened during the trial and what did Wilde say?
Was he persecuted or the author of his own downfall? Using the
original words spoken in court, we can feel what it was like to be in
the company of a flawed genius – as this less than ideal husband
was suddenly reduced to a man of no importance. Producer John O’Connor together with one of the
cast of the West End production will bring to life what was said during the Trial of the Century using
recently discovered transcripts from the trial. The production was developed by John in collaboration
with Oscar Wilde’s grandson, Merlin Holland.

“Performance poetry’s key revivalist” (Metro) Luke Wright performs his
very best stuff. Brand new verse and a few old favourites. Expect bawdy
bar room ballads about small town tragedies and Westminster rogues.
His fast paced, witty poems are crammed full of yummy mummies,
debauched Tory grandees, maudlin commuters and leering tabloid paps.
His live shows are enjoyed by thousands of people across the world
every year, where he mixes the wistful with the downright comic to take
audiences on an incredible emotional journey. “One of the funniest and
most brilliant poets of his generation.” Johann Hari, The Independent

Ruby Turner
For many years Ruby Turner has been regarded as having one of the greatest voices the UK has
ever produced. Ruby can breathe life and meaning into a song whether it is a passionate soaring
ballad or a soulful up-tempo groove. Born in Jamaica, Ruby moved to England when she was nine.
Her first album, “Women Hold Up Half The Sky” was released to critical acclaim in 1986. This
period spawned the hits ‘If You’re Ready (Come Go With Me)” and ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ and, in the
American R’n’B chart, the number 1 hit single ‘It’s Gonna Be Alright’ - one of less than ten British
records to achieve this! Later she released the hit album ‘The Motown Songbook’ on which she
performed with some of the great stars of that era - The Four Tops, The Temptations, Jimmy Ruffin
etc. From this album she also released the smash single ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered’. In 2009 Ruby
released “I’m Travelling On” – a
brand new album of vintage
gospel with the single “This
Train” receiving a considerable
amount of radio airplay. In the
summer of 2014 Ruby released
her latest album, “All That I Am”.
In December 2015, East West
Records (Warner Music) released
a new album of 22 classic
collaborations of Ruby Turner &
Jools Holland, entitled “Jools &
Ruby”. During the autumn & early
winter of 2015, Ruby toured the
U.K. & Ireland with Jools Holland
and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra
before going out on the road
again in the U.K. with her own
band in 2016. We’re delighted
that the Gap Festival is part of
the schedule. Ruby will wow the
festival audience!

Lucy Worsley – If Walls Could Talk – An Intimate History of Your Home
Why did the flushing toilet take two centuries to catch on?
Why did medieval people sleep sitting up? When were the
two ‘dirty centuries’? Why did gas lighting cause Victorian
ladies to faint? Why, for centuries, did people fear fruit?
All these questions will be answered in this juicy, smelly
and truly intimate history of home life. We travel through
the history of the bedroom, bathroom, living room and
kitchen, covering the architectural history of each room,
but concentrating on what people actually did in bed, in the
bath, at the table, and at the stove. From sauce-stirring to
breast-feeding, getting dressed to getting married, Lucy
Worsley will make you see your home with new eyes.
