The effect of graffiti
in our community
Graffiti markings suggest that a
neighborhood is unsafe, does not
care or can not cope with the
problem.
In some instances, graffiti
can convey racist or other
types of discriminatory
sentiments, which are
personally damaging to
whole classes of people.
Studies have shown that
when graffiti markings
are left unattended for as
little as a week there is
almost a 100% chance that
additional graffiti markings
will be placed at the original site or in the
nearby community.
Who is GroundWork PG?
GroundWork PG is a program
designed to give back to the
local community while
providing viable employment opportunities for
men transitioning back into the community.
GroundWork PG employs between 4-6 men
and offers a variety of services to individuals
and non-profit service providers. GroundWork
PG is a social enterprise operating within the
Prince George Activator Society CRF – a
community service provider that supports men
as they transition from incarceration to
balanced community living.
Who is Enhance PG?
EnhancePG is a City Council
appointed committee with the
mandate to create Partnerships
for a Clean, Green and Safe Community.
EnhancePG is made up of 9 volunteer
community members and one City of Prince
George staff liaison.
When left unattended, graffiti may contribute
to an escalation to more serious vandalism and
other crimes in the community. Graffiti plays a
role in increased resident anxiety, and the
economic decline of neighbourhoods.
What you can do
Graffiti is vandalism - not art!
ANTI-GRAFFITI STRATEGY
Four key elements in our fight against
graffiti:
Eradication of Graffiti - implement measures
to facilitate the timely removal of graffiti and
to encourage the increased reporting of
graffiti.
Public Education - to raise awareness in the
community about the negative impact and
cost associated with graffiti, and about the
importance of timely removal. Encourage
the active participation of community
members in the prevention and eradication
of graffiti.
Graffiti Prevention - to promote initiatives to
better protect private property and city
property from graffiti vandalism.
Identification of Tags and Deterrence of
Graffiti - to implement measures aimed at
identifying vandals and to hold them
responsible for their actions.
How to report graffiti
Do not ignore graffiti. Report it or clean it up
as soon as you notice it.
•
To report graffiti on City or private
property call: 250-561-7600
Fast action increases the chance for complete
removal, as the marking may not have had the
chance to completely adhere to the surface.
•
To report graffiti online visit:

•
To report graffiti located
downtown call: 250-614-1330

businesses or the City if you see graffiti on
their property.
What is the City doing?
The City is committed to eradicating graffiti on all City facilities and structures. Wherever we
spot graffiti on civic property, we direct a crew to remove the markings as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, we can’t catch every instance of graffiti, hence we rely on residents and
businesses to inform us if they spot any graffiti on City facilities and structures.
Things to consider when
painting over graffiti
•
Make sure you paint over the affected area
in a neat fashion. Use a paint or undercoat
that doesn’t allow the graffiti to ghost
through.
•
Try to colour match paint with the affected
surface whenever possible.
and ...
•
Save some paint for any future touch-ups.
•
Avoid painting unfinished surfaces such as
brick, stucco or marble.
