The Future is designed in the form of technology, waves and virtual. Unpredictable lines, special effects, impalpable materials,
everything is possible. The lack of physical constraints creates a new expressiveness, excitingly seized by the architects. With the most
recent computer technology tools, the innovating materials, the development of new aesthetically refined concretes, high technology steel
and glass with unlimited possibilities, the architectural conception becomes fundamentally the art of sculpture. The construction styles
are there to serve the form.
In a recession climate, many architects wonder about the intention and the meaning of extravagance. Today, Libeskind, Hadid or Gehry’s
imaginary exceeds with so much creative liberty their architectural practice that it finally looks close to surrealism. Eminently personal,
their language intrigues without worrying, because their spectacular, even amusing character invites to dreaming. But their projects
establish themselves in the city by requalifying it. Organic volumes winding up like a ribbon or standing up like a prow, the sculptural forms
coming from technical researches, in the end manage to find a harmonious and respectuous insertion in the landscape. In Los Angeles
(Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall), like in small cities (Libeskind’s Palais des Congrès in Mons, Belgium) they are tokens of irrepressible
vitality. If the buildings are genuine works, they fulfill completely their functions. With the help of great names in structural engineering,
like Ove Arup, famous for the Sydney Opera and the Pompidou Center in Paris, who reasserts with each project his reputation of supplying
innovative and sustainable concepts reinventing the built environment. A great architect can and must help to answer all questions in relation
with the way of living in a more sustainable, healthy and fair-minded world, between social responsibility and design excellence.
Le futur se dessine sous forme de technologie, d’ondes, de virtuel. Lignes aléatoires, effets spéciaux, matières intangibles, tout est
possible. Le manque de contraintes physiques produit une nouvelle expressivité dont les architectes s’emparent avec enthousiasme.
Avec les outils informatiques les plus récents, les matériaux innovants, les développements du béton, devenu esthétiquement très
raffiné, les aciers et les verres de haute technologie qui font reculer les limites, la conception architecturale est devenue foncièrement
plasticienne. Les modes de construction sont au service de la forme.
Dans un climat où sévit la récession, de nombreux architectes s'interrogent sur l'intention et le sens de l'extravagance. Aujourd’hui,
l’imaginaire des Libeskind, Hadid ou Gehry submerge avec tant de liberté créatrice la pratique architecturale que celle-ci s’apparente
quelque peu au surréalisme. Eminemment personnel, leur langage intrigue mais sans inquiéter, car leur caractère spectaculaire,
voire festif, porte au rêve. Mais leurs projets s’imposent dans la ville et la requalifie. Volumes organiques s’enroulant comme un ruban
ou dressés comme une proue, les formes sculpturales issues des recherches techniques, finissent par trouver une insertion
harmonieuse et respectueuse dans le paysage. A Los Angeles (Walt Disney Concert Hall de Gehry) comme dans les petites cités (l’exemple
du Palais des Congrès de Mons, en Belgique par Libeskind), ils sont autant de gages d’une irrépressible vitalité. Si les bâtiments sont
des œuvres en soi, ils assurent pleinement leurs fonctions. Avec l’aide de grands noms de l'ingénierie structurelle, tel Ove Arup, célèbre
depuis l'Opéra de Sydney et le Centre Pompidou à Paris, qui réaffirme à chaque projet sa réputation de livrer des conceptions novatrices
et durables réinventant l'environnement bâti. Une grande architecture peut et doit servir à répondre à des questions sur la façon
de vivre dans un monde plus durable, plus sain, plus équitable. Entre responsabilité sociale et excellence du design.

Sculptural and complex, Steven Holl’s architecture
expresses a great curiosity and sensibility towards
materials, forms and some details.

Honoured by the American Institute of Architects’ 2012 Gold Medal,
Steven Holl is one of the most celebrated representatives of American Contemporary Architecture. His career is however quite
international. Born in 1947 in Flushing (Washington) and graduated
of the Washington University, he continues his studies in Rome and
London. His first buildings were erected in Japan and his first major museum (Kiasma) in Helsinki. His practice is everywhere. Since
almost four decades, Steven Holl, with remarkable consistency,
generates reflections on architecture. Influenced among others by
Henri Bergson’s and Juhani Pallasmaa’s work, he decides on architecture keen to change our way of living.
Space, light and time are given great attention in the projects of
his office Steven Holl Architects. Forms, colours and textures are
created with watercolours and small-scale models.
The watercolours are the movement of light on a surface. By bringing
together figurative and abstract elements, emerges a formal and peculiar conceptual language. However, Steven Holl doesn’t consider the
buildings as architectural gestures. On the contrary, he concentrates
his attention on the significance of the work. Each project is unique: a

site, a circumstance, a culture, a climate, a program. Looking for an
original idea, he shows his ability to shape space and light with a great
sensibility to catalyse the unique qualities of each project, from the
home to large works or on urban scale.
Steven Holl includes in his projects the sustainable construction
techniques taking advantage of the natural ventilation and light. He
imagines structures adapted to their environment with an aesthetic
and ecological approach. The large dynamic openings of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Simmons Hall are like lungs,
bringing natural light down and moving air up. The ‘Cité de l’Océan
et du Surf’ Museum in Biarritz intends to raise awareness of oceanic
issues and explore educational and scientific aspects of the surf and
sea and their role upon our leisure, science and ecology. Designed in
collaboration with the Brazilian architect Solange Fabiao, the museum
rises towards the Atlantic Ocean and a concave « under the sky »
shape creates a central gathering plazza. In the exhibition spaces, the
visitor has the impression of being « under the sea ». A very original
architectural concept, designed on the transparency principle, associates the surrounding landscape with a functional museal space.

The new Music Museum of Hangzhou is based on the idea of the
« Eight Sounds » in traditional Chinese music. While the exterior
of the building is clad in the same wood as the pergolas, the eight
volumes are constructed from one of these eight materials: silk,
bamboo, wood, stone, metal, clay, gourd and hide. Two other projects
in 2009 in China are symbolic of innovating conceptual methods.
Linked Hybrid, in Beijing, a complex with 700 apartments, hotels,
schools, restaurants, spread on 220.000 square meters, promotes
the pedestrians with towers connected by a footbridge system. The
public green spaces create a micro city community.
The Vanke Center in Shenzhen, a sort of horizontal skyscraper with
hovering gardens is one of the first LEED Platine projects in Southern

China. As for the Sliced Porosity Block of 2012, it is a metropolitan
public space in the center of Chengdu, shaped by three water garden
levels, based on concepts of time of the Chinese calendar. The structure of the white concrete building is cut up by precise geometrical
angles. The project is clearly sustainable: high-performance glazing,
energy-efficient geothermal equipments, use of regional materials.
The questions being asked by these buildings involve global demographic shifts, economics, sustainability and the role of urbanism
in the developing world. The answers draw from architecture, of
course, but also from engineering, science, art, philosophy and
literature.
Steven Holl’s expressive architecture arouses curiosity and feeling
research, really creating a sensitive dialogue between buildings
and spectators.

ton, il poursuit ses études à Rome et à Londres. Ses premiers bâtiments
sont construits au Japon et son premier musée majeur (Kiasma), à
Helsinki. Sa pratique est partout. Depuis près de quatre décennies, Steven Holl développe des réflexions sur l'architecture avec une constance
remarquable. Influencé par les écrits de Henri Bergson et Juhani Pallasmaa entre autres, il s’engage dans une voie où l'architecture change
notre façon de vivre. Les projets de son agence Steven Holl Architects
sont marqués par une attention spéciale à l’espace, la lumière et le
temps. Formes, couleurs et textures sont élaborées au moyen d’aquarelles et de maquettes à petite échelle. L'aquarelle, c'est le mouvement
de la lumière sur une surface. Du rapprochement entre les éléments
figuratifs et abstraits, se dégage un langage formel et conceptuel singulier. Cependant, Steven Holl ne considère pas les édifices comme des
gestes architecturaux. Au contraire, il concentre son attention sur la
signification de l'ouvrage. Chaque projet est unique: un site, une circonstance, une culture, un climat, un programme. A la recherche d’une idée
originale, il montre cette capacité à modeler l'espace et la lumière avec
une grande sensibilité pour catalyser les qualités uniques de chaque
projet, de l'habitation aux grands ouvrages ou à l'échelle urbaine.
Steven Holl intègre dans ses projets des techniques de construction durable, qui profitent souvent de la ventilation et de l’éclairage naturels. Il
imagine des structures répondant à leur environnement, à la fois de manière esthétique et écologique. Les grandes ouvertures dynamiques du

des poumons refluant l'air vers le haut tout en apportant la lumière du
jour. A Hamarøy (Norvège), le concept du musée dédié à l’écrivain Knut
Hamsun se rapporte à «la construction d'un corps», créant un champ
de forces invisibles. Caractéristique des grandes églises en bois scandinaves, le bois teinté noir est choisi comme peau de l’édifice.
Construite en collaboration avec l’architecte brésilienne Solange Fabiao,
la Cité de l’Océan et du Surf à Biarritz se soulève vers l’Atlantique et la
forme concave de la place s’étend à travers le paysage. Le visiteur a
l’impression d’être sous la mer à l’intérieur de certaines salles et au
contraire, complètement à ciel ouvert dans d’autres.
La conception du Musée de la Musique de Hangzhou est basée sur
l'idée des huit sons dans la musique chinoise traditionnelle. Si l'extérieur du bâtiment est revêtu du même bois que les pergolas, les huit
volumes sont chacun construits à partir de l'un de ces huit matériaux :
soie, bambou, bois, pierre, métal, argile, calebasse et cuir. Deux autres
projets réalisés en Chine en 2009 sont emblématiques des méthodes
conceptuelles innovantes. Linked Hybrid, à Beijing – un complexe de 700
appartements, hôtels, écoles, restaurants sur 220.000 m2 – est axé sur
les piétons avec des tours reliées par un système de passerelles. Doté
d’espaces verts, il crée une micro communauté urbaine. Le Vanke Center à Shenzhen, sorte de gratte-ciel horizontal où planent des jardins, est
l'un des premiers projets LEED Platine dans le sud de la Chine.
Quant au Sliced Porosity Block datant de 2012, c’est un espace métropolitain dans le centre de Chengdu formé de trois niveaux de jardins d'eau,
basés sur des concepts de temps du calendrier chinois. Des angles géométriques précis découpent la structure du bâtiment en béton blanc. Le projet
est axé sur la durabilité : vitrage à haut rendement, efficacité énergétique
des équipements de géothermie, utilisation de matériaux régionaux.
Les questions posées par ces bâtiments impliquent les changements
dans la démographie et l'économie mondiales, le développement durable et le rôle de l'urbanisme dans les pays en forte croissance. Les
réponses fournies sont issues de l'architecture, bien sûr, mais aussi de
l'ingénierie, de la science, de l'art, de la philosophie et de la littérature.
L'architecture expressive de Steven Holl suscite ainsi une curiosité et
une recherche de sens qui instaure réellement un dialogue sensible
entre bâtiments et spectateurs.

Winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize 2012, the
Chinese Wang Shu relentlessly explores the ways
of life in his country, poetically transferring the
traditional know-how in a contemporary language.
His architecture is thus exemplary in its acute
respect of the cultural continuity.
Wang Shu (°1963) belongs to the first generation of architects
having studied after Deng Xiaoping’s economic reforms at the end
of the seventies. He completes his architecture studies in 1988 at
the Nanjing Institute of Technology.
Appearing for the first time on the European scene in 2001 at an
exhibition in Berlin (Aedes) presenting the young Chinese architecture, Wang Shu really draws attention to himself five years later
at the 10th Venice Architecture Biennial. His Tiles Garden displays
66.000 Chinese tiles recuperated from a demolition site and presented on a bamboo structure. Rather than taking inspiration
from occidental ideas like many of his contemporary colleagues,
the architect implants his work in the Chinese history and culture.

Amateur Architecture Studio, his agency founded in 1997 in Hangzhou with his wife Lu Wenyu as partner, is involved in a programme
quite distant from the one proposed by the typical official architect
agencies. On one hand, the name refers to a precise interest for
the Chinese vernacular architecture and to the amateur builders’
approach with spontaneity, craft industry competences and cultural traditions. On the other hand, he refers to an approach based
on a critical vision of the profession of architect in China and, in
a context of city and rural transformations, he regrets the massive destructions and the Chinese cities reconstruction without
any real architectural reflection. Wang Shu thinks of another way
to conceive projects as per today’s criteria whilst respecting a
traditional conception: the interdependence of architecture and
landscape. The exhibition dedicated to him in Brussels in 2009
(Bozar) was named « Architecture as Resistance »
During the last ten years, Amateur Architecture Studio has developed an innovating and even experimental method. Wang Shu
and Lu Wenyu have associated their researches on the local rural
Chinese traditions with architectural experiences first tested on

a small scale, then on important housing complexes and finally at
the city level. One unique characteristic of his buildings: their ability to recall the past without directly referring to History. His work
is able to transcend the debate proposing a timeless architecture,
deeply rooted in its context and however universal. The question of
the relation between present and past is quite opportune in order
to know if the architecture implemented in China in the recent
urbanization process must be anchored to tradition or only turned
towards the future.
Wang Su knows how to take up challenges. By using recycled materials, he is able to send many messages on the resources careful
management and the context’s respect, as well as giving a frank
evaluation of today’s technology especially in China. Recycled building materials, like tiles and bricks from dismantled walls, create
architectural collages of rich and tactile textures.
He shows his capacity to successfully work on large projects – The
Hangzhou Academy of Arts Campus is a small town - but also his
ability to create intimate buildings like the small exhibition hall in
the historical centre of Hangzhou. The Pritzker Architecture Prize
confirms the exceptional character and the quality of the achieved
work, and also a continuous commitment to architecture without
compromise, coming from his feeling for culture and place.

Wang Shu explore sans relâche l’évolution des modes
de vie dans son pays, transférant de façon poétique le
savoir-faire traditionnel dans un langage contemporain. Son architecture est ainsi exemplaire dans son
sens aigu de la continuité culturelle.
Wang Shu (°1963) appartient à la première génération d’architectes
ayant fait ses études après les réformes économiques menées par Deng
Xiaoping à la fin des années 70. Il complète ses études d’architecture à
l'Institut de Technologie de Nanjing en 1988.
Apparu sur la scène européenne en 2001 lors d’une exposition à Berlin
(Aedes) consacrée à la jeune architecture chinoise, Wang Shu se fait
réellement remarquer cinq ans plus tard au cours de la Xème Biennale
d’Architecture de Venise. Son Jardin des Tuiles (Tiles Garden), étale
66.000 tuiles chinoises récupérés sur les chantiers de démolition
sur une structure en bambou. Plutôt que de s’inspirer des idées
occidentales, comme beaucoup de ses contemporains, l’architecte
enracine son travail dans l'histoire et la culture chinoises.
Amateur Architecture Studio, son agence fondée à Hangzhou en 1997,
en association avec sa femme Lu Wenyu, traduit en effet un programme
qui s’affranchit de celui des agences d’architecture typiques du régime.
D’une part, le nom fait référence à un intérêt certain pour l’architecture
chinoise vernaculaire et à l'approche de constructeurs amateurs,
basée sur la spontanéité, les compétences d'artisanat et les traditions
culturelles. D’autre part, il fait référence à une démarche qui repose
sur une vision critique de la profession d'architecte en Chine et, dans
un contexte de mutations urbaines et rurales, déplore les destructions
massives et la reconstruction des villes chinoises sans réelle réflexion
architecturale. Wang Shu pense à une autre manière de concevoir
les projets selon des critères d’aujourd’hui tout en respectant une
conception traditionnelle : l’interdépendance de l’architecture et du
paysage. L’exposition qui lui est consacrée à Bruxelles en 2009 (Bozar) a
pour nom ‘Architecture as Resistance’.
Au cours des dix dernières années, Amateur Architecture Studio a
développé une méthode innovante et même expérimentale. Wang Shu
et Lu Wenyu associent à leurs recherches sur les traditions chinoises
rurales locales, des expériences architecturales d’abord testées à
petite échelle pour être ensuite transposées à de grands ensembles de
logements et finalement s’étendre à l’échelle urbaine.
Ses bâtiments ont la faculté unique d'évoquer le passé, sans faire
directement référence à l'histoire. Son travail est capable de transcender
ce débat, produisant une architecture intemporelle, profondément
enracinée dans son contexte et pourtant universelle. La question de la
relation correcte du présent au passé est particulièrement opportune

quant à savoir si l'architecture mise en place dans le récent processus
d'urbanisation en Chine doit être ancrée dans la tradition ou doit se
tourner uniquement vers l'avenir.
Wang Shu sait comment relever les défis. Avec l'utilisation de matériaux
recyclés, il est capable d'envoyer plusieurs messages sur la gestion
prudente des ressources et le respect du contexte ainsi que de donner
une évaluation franche de la technologie d'aujourd'hui, en particulier
en Chine. Des matériaux de construction recyclés, telles les tuiles et les
briques des murs démantelés, créent des collages de textures riches
et tactiles.
Il montre sa capacité à travailler avec succès sur des projets de grande
dimension – le Campus de l’Académie des Arts de Hangzhou est une
petite ville – mais est également capable de créer de petits bâtiments,
comme le petit hall d'exposition dans le centre historique de Hangzhou.
Le Pritzker Architecture Prize consacre le caractère exceptionnel et la
qualité du travail exécuté, et aussi un engagement continu à la poursuite
d'une architecture sans compromis, résultant d'un sens de la culture
et de lieu.

Well known for his new critical discourse into architecture, Daniel Libeskind was present in BAU
Munich on Wednesday January 16th for the ArchiWorld® Academy Awards.
The architect underlined the importance of diversity, of the knowledge of the past, of the work on public space, and of the involvement of
architecture to serve the city. Designing the Archipelago 21 project in
Seoul, his first idea was to create a dynamic, sustainable and diversified place, ready to become the new 21st century growth symbol.
Let’s look back. In 2008, the Korean consortium Dreamhub launches
an international urbanism competition for the masterplan of the future Yongsan International Business Center. Studio Daniel Libeskind
was named winner. Within the masterplan Studio Daniel Libeskind is
also the architect for three residential towers (The Dancing Towers)
and an office tower (Harmony Tower).

Dramatically reinventing the landscape of Korea’s capital city, Archipelago 21 will be completed in 2024. This ambitious close to 3 million
square meter project is displayed like an archipelago of verticalities
linked between each other by a large urban park along the Han River.
It is developed according to an enlightened urbanism plan, far from
the concept of large monofunctional constructions, and proposes
in addition to the service sector, shops, residential areas, cultural
institutions, educational facilities and transport infrastructures.
The site is broken into « islands » creating together a composition
in the natural landscape. At human size, they create a real urban
life breaking down the overall density and mass of the large urban
development. It is essential for Daniel Libeskind that buildings and
urban projects talk to the whole surrounding community and find a
fair balance between vegetation and built environment, nature and
technology, work and housing.

Bien connu pour avoir introduit un nouveau discours
critique sur l'architecture, Daniel Libeskind était
présent à Munich le 16 janvier lors de la remise des
Archi-World® Academy Awards.
L’architecte a rappelé l’importance de la diversité, de la prise en
compte de la mémoire du lieu, du travail sur l’espace public et de
l’implication de l’architecture à servir la ville. En concevant ce projet
Archipelago 21 à Seoul, son idée première était de créer un lieu à la
fois dynamique, durable et diversifié, prêt à devenir un nouveau symbole de croissance du XXIème siècle. Petit retour en arrière. En 2008, le
consortium coréen Dreamhub lance un concours international d’urbanisme pour le master plan du futur centre international d’affaires à
Yongsan. Le projet proposé par Daniel Libeskind est lauréat. En plus
du master plan, le Studio Daniel Libeskind dessine trois tours résidentielles (The Dancing Towers) et une tour de bureaux (Harmony Tower).

Réinventant radicalement le paysage de la capitale de la Corée, Archipelago 21 verra son achèvement à l’horizon 2024. Cet ambitieux
programme de près de 3 millions de m2 s’organise comme un archipel de verticalités reliées entre elles par un grand parc au bord de la
rivière Han. Il se développe selon un urbanisme éclairé, loin de l’image
des grands ensembles monofonctionnels, en proposant au-delà des
surfaces tertiaires, des commerces, des quartiers résidentiels,
des institutions culturelles, des établissements d'enseignement et
des infrastructures de transport. Le site est divisé en îlots à taille
humaine, qui, ensemble, créent une véritable vie urbaine pour briser
la forte densité globale et la masse d’un grand développement. Il est
fondamental pour Daniel Libeskind que les bâtiments et les projets
urbains parlent à l'ensemble de la communauté dans laquelle ils sont
construits et trouvent un juste équilibre entre verdure et environnement construit, nature et technologie, travail et habitat.

Organized by Archi-World® in cooperation with Messe München,
the Archi-World® Academy Award is a two years contest inviting
young architects and architects of tomorrow to submit energysaving projects and concepts for the future of architecture and
urban design. No other architecture contest on such wide scale
as ever been organized before. Twelve top architects from around
the world - Zaha Hadid, Francine Houben, Françoise-Hélène Jourda,
Andrey Bokov, Mario Cucinella, Bjarke Ingels, Christoph Ingenhoven,
Bijoy Jain, Jean-Michel Jaspers, Kengo Kuma, Daniel Libeskind and
Ma Yansong - accepted to be member of jury offering to the twelve
students the unique opportunity to perform a traineeship in their
prestigious practices. 1.274 student’s projects have been presented
for this first edition (2011/2013) which is a very promising result
for the next editions. The winners of have been announced at the
awarding ceremony that took place in Munich on 16 January 2013
during the BAU exhibition fair. Juhani Pallasmaa was the President
of this competition. Professor of Architecture at Helsinki University of
Technology and himself a leading figure in the sector, he took part of
an exclusive panel of VIP colleagues from around the world.

de la cérémonie de remise des prix qui a eu lieu à Munich le 16
janvier 2013, lors du salon Bau. Juhani Pallasmaa était le président
de ce concours. Professeur d'architecture à Helsinki University of
Technology et lui-même figure de proue du secteur, il a participé à un
débat exclusif regroupant quelques-uns de ses collègues VIP.

Famous for its mastering of buildings’ polychrome
treatment, the German architecture studio defines
colour as an essential material of architecture, but
shows a strong ecological commitment, underlining
a technological know-how combined with an
intelligent use of the existing resources.
Sauerbruch Hutton was founded in 1989 by the association of
the architect Louisa Hutton with the engineer architect Matthias
Sauerbruch, both having studied at the London Architectural Association. Refraining from being influenced by previous historical
experiences, (notably Bruno Taut), the architects confess having
developed the colour theme unconsciously. This interest came
partly from the necessity, at the beginning of their career, to
create great architectural impacts on some low-budget buildings
like the L-House (1990), the H-House (1995) or the N-House (1999).
This approach extends to the city level if one refers to the GSW
building in Berlin (1990-1999). In this precise case, the façade with
an intense orange red colour (to receive the after-noon sun light)
has completely changed the atmosphere of a entirely uninteresting environment. The colour offered it a new identity. Since then,
colour has become a recurrent theme.

By using different colours and contrasts, it is possible to reassess the
spatial situations. This skilful mixing of design and colour can be noticed on double skin or sun-shading façades. And if the envelope’s top
priority is to underline the natural ventilation, the insulation and the
solar protection, it also enables through the use of colours a better
impact and integration in the landscape. Colour may also be helpful to
identify an enterprise: like the yellow shades peculiar to ADAC (Munich 2011) or through a range of colours for the Photonic Center (Berlin
1998), a light research centre. Colour also helps communication. It
also develops a very physical relation with the building by a façade
movement and mainly by the colour effects. The Sheffield University
building is coloured inside and outside. The exterior skin of the zero
energy office building in Copenhagen has a functional dimension: it
works like a climatic interface offering a group of technical equipments (ventilation devices, sun-shading protections, etc.). Colour
always plays an important role. The polychromatic treatment of their
buildings created over the past twenty years allow to concentrate the
colours, forms and energies of the contemporary city and disappear
the complex technical reality behind a powerful aesthetic experience.
Keen to place the human being and his personality at the center
of their projects, the two architects and their team don’t see sustainability simply as energy savings but also in the perception of a
building where it is pleasant to live. Three recent achievements - the

L’agence Sauerbruch Hutton est née en 1989 par l’association de
l’architecte Louisa Hutton et de l’architecte ingénieur Matthias
Sauerbruch, tous deux diplômés de l’Architectural Association de
Londres. Se défendant d’avoir été influencés par des précédents
historiques (notamment Bruno Taut), les architectes avouent avoir
développé le thème de la couleur de façon inconsciente. Cet intérêt provient en partie d’une nécessité, au début de leur carrière,
de créer de grands effets architecturaux pour des bâtiments à
petit budget telles les L-House (1990), H-House (1995) ou N-House
(1999). Une démarche qui s’étend jusqu’à l'échelle urbaine, si l’on
pense au bâtiment GSW à Berlin (1990-1999). Dans ce cas précis, la
façade colorée d’un intense rouge orangé (pour capter la lumière
du soleil d'après-midi) a complètement changé l'atmosphère d’un
environnement dénué d’intérêt. La couleur lui a offert une nouvelle
identité. Depuis, la couleur est devenue un thème récurrent.
Par l’intermédiaire de différentes couleurs et par l’usage de
contrastes, il est possible de remettre en question des situations spatiales. Ce savant mélange de design et de couleur peut
s’observer sur les façades à double peau ou les brise-soleil. Et si
l’enveloppe vise en priorité la ventilation naturelle, l’isolation et
la protection solaire, elle permet aussi à travers ses couleurs de
s’imposer ou de se fondre dans un paysage.

KfW Westarkade office building in Frankfurt, the Brandhorst museum
in Munich, and the Cologne Oval Offices in Cologne - have as common
denominator that they take into consideration the big sustainability
principles at each stage from the first studies to the delivery. If the
buildings with sensual swayings and colour variations are characteristic of the Sauerbruch Hutton agency, one must emphasize their
pioneer approach in sustainable development. Indeed their work in
this field is essential, in relation with energy, consumption, cultural
and social dimension, as well as the site and the place’s memory.

Les couleurs peuvent également faire percevoir l’identité d'une
entreprise : à travers les nuances de jaune propre à l’ADAC (Munich
2011) ou à travers un spectre de couleurs pour le Photonic Center
(Berlin 1998), un centre de recherche sur la lumière. La couleur
revêt ainsi un aspect de communication. De plus, ses effets, ajoutés
au mouvement de la façade, développent une relation très physique
avec le bâtiment.
Le bâtiment conçu pour l’université de Sheffield, est quant à lui
coloré tant à l'extérieur qu'à l'intérieur. La peau extérieure de l’immeuble de bureaux zéro énergie à Copenhague a une dimension
fonctionnelle : elle agit comme une interface climatique en offrant
un ensemble d'équipements techniques (appareils de ventilation,
protections solaires, etc.). Le traitement polychrome des bâtiments
créés au cours des vingt dernières années permet de concentrer
les couleurs, les formes, les énergies de la ville contemporaine et
de faire disparaître la réalité complexe technique derrière une
expérience esthétique puissante.
Soucieux de placer l’individu et sa personnalité au centre des projets, les deux architectes et leur équipe ne voient pas la durabilité
simplement dans les économies énergétiques mais aussi dans l’as22

pect perceptible d’une construction où l’on doit se sentir bien. Trois
réalisations récentes – l’immeuble de bureaux KfW Westarkade à
Francfort, le musée Brandhorst à Munich et le Cologne Oval Offices
à Cologne – possèdent comme dénominateur commun la prise en
compte des grands principes du développement durable, et ce à
chaque étape, des premières études jusqu’à la livraison.
Si les édifices aux ondulations sensuelles et aux variations de
couleurs sont caractéristiques de l’œuvre de Sauerbruch Hutton,
il faut souligner leur démarche pionnière dans l’architecture du
développement durable. En effet, leurs travaux constituent dans ce
domaine une référence incontournable, en termes d’énergie et de
consommation, de dimension sociale et culturelle et dans ses rapports au site et à la mémoire du lieu.

Designed to create a debate on the future of housing, this uncommon
temporary space built in Bornholm (Denmark) would demonstrate that
architecture had to be as site-specific as possible. This is the reason why
the architects designed a deconstructed geodesic dome with a frame
composed of triangles largely open to the outside. The building envelope
consists of translucent greenhouse membranes on the sphere surfaces
and transparent PVC film as windows on the perpendicular surfaces. The
ambition of the architects was to understand the geodesic dome, and
then to deconstruct its sacred geometry in a way not to oppose but to respect its properties, so that the dome is shaped by the local surroundings
and the projects’ functionalities. Regarding the construction process, a
system of nodes of steel connected with wood can build a complex lattice
structure. The system is designed so that it is possible to vary the skeleton
and adapt to given parameters. The column-free lattice structure without
interior walls allows a great freedom for interior and façade design. Seen
here as a tent, this type of building could also be the load-bearing structure of a completely insulated house.

Visant à susciter le débat sur l’avenir du logement, ce lieu éphémère
à l’aspect inédit construit au Danemark voulait démontrer que l'architecture devait être la plus spécifique possible, en accord avec le
site. La forme – un dôme géodésique – est constituée d’un cadre en
pin Douglas composé de triangles largement ouverts vers l’extérieur,
de membranes translucides sur les surfaces courbes et d’un film en
PVC transparent sur les fenêtres. L'ambition des architectes était de
comprendre cette géométrie particulière, puis de la déconstruire en
respectant ses propriétés afin de permettre au dôme d’être façonné par
le lieu et par les fonctionnalités du projet. Côté constructif, un système
de nœuds en acier connectés au bois permet de faire varier le squelette,
de l’adapter à des paramètres donnés. La structure sans colonnes ni
murs intérieurs permet une grande liberté tant pour l’aménagement de
l'intérieur que pour la conception des façades. Vu ici comme une tente,
ce type de bâtiment pourrait aussi bien être la structure porteuse d’une
maison entièrement isolée.

ONE Prize Award aims to explore the social,
economic, and ecological possibilities of
urban transformation. This year’s competition

challenges of extreme weather? The ONE
Prize is a call to deploy sophisticated design
to alleviate storm impact through various
