VISION STATEMENT
WE, the parish of Our Lady of Victory, proclaim with joy the presence of Jesus in the world through
Word, Sacrament, and deed. It is through our discipleship that we recognize our connection to God,
our neighbor, and our deepest spiritual selves.
WE, seek to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ by:
+ Welcoming all with kindness, compassion and hospitality. + Nourishing the faith life of the
community through prayer, fellowship and education. + Reverencing the dignity of each person by
celebrating the beauty of life from conception to natural death. + Nurturing the gifts of all so that
each person may live out his or her unique and personal call from God. + Caring for the needs of
the less fortunate by empowering our parish community to answer that call.
WE, do this in the name of Jesus Christ and the mandate:
“See those Christians how they love one another!”

pm in Our Lady’s Chapel, as well as an additional Mass at 10:30 am in Our Lady’s Chapel.
Blessed palm will be available anytime after all
the palm is blessed at the 4:00 pm Mass. We
look forward to welcoming visitors and guests to
OLV next weekend!
Letter from Sister Florence:
“Dear Priests and Members of OLV Parish,
I realize that time has passed since I left
OLV. However, it was difficult to express my
thoughts/feelings well. As time went passed I
realized what an inheritance I have been given.
Our Lady of Victory parish is composed as
a community of believers. It exists as an expression of the Gospel lived through sacrament,
prayers, mercy and forgiveness.
It comes through the actions of the priests,
who are the leaders in bringing forth faith in
God’s presence in sacrament and grace.
It comes through the grace of prayer in the
faithful.
It comes through the grace of mercy, of forgiveness, of charity growing daily in the faithful.
It deals with the crosses of life which people
carry by sincere compassion.
It renders Christ’s death and resurrection
real.
It creates community.
Thank you for this inheritance I will have with
me until the day of my death. I am indeed rich.
Sister Florence”
Lenten Family Workshop
The final presentation of the Lenten Family
Workshop will take place this Friday, March
27th in Memorial Hall. The topic will be Family
Life & Grandparents. All are welcome. If you
will be joining us for pizza between 6 pm and 7
pm, please let the rectory know.
Mass will be celebrated to conclude the
Lenten Family Workshop beginning around 8:15
pm in the church. All are welcome!
Capital Campaign Memorial Plaque
In today’s bulletin there is the final list of
additional names of people who contributed to
the Capital Campaign at OLV. As I mentioned
in previous bulletins, the list I received only had
one person’s name listed - usually the husband so that is what is printed in the bulletin. I am
asking those of you who have your name in today’s bulletin to get back to me via email
([email protected]) to indicate exactly how
you want your entry to appear on the wall
plaque. Please follow one of the following three
patterns:
Mr. & Mrs. Joseph A. Smith (& Family)
Joseph & Mary Smith (& Family) or
The Smith Family
Thank you for your cooperation and patience
with this project!
Adult Confirmation
A five-week preparation program is being
scheduled for any adult who has not yet received
the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Sacrament
will be celebrated on Pentecost Sunday, May 24,
2105. Please contact me at the rectory if you interested in being confirmed.
Church additions
You may have noticed some items that have
been replaced and other items that have been
added to the church. Hand rails leading to the
sanctuary have been replaced. Poor boxes have
also been reinstalled. Also, the announcement
board has been re-hung in the vestibule. Funerals will be posted there so the community can be
informed when a parishioners dies.
Additions to the church include a hand rail
leading up to the choir loft. A food pantry box
also has been put in the vestibule of the church
so that donations for the food pantry can be left
at any time. Two additional Saint statues will be
placed on either side of the St. Anthony of Padua statue in the back of the church. St. Therese,
the Little Flower and St. Jude, the Patron of
Hope, will be added.
Praised the name of Jesus Christ
now and forever!

LIFE ISSUES FORUM: DEPENDENCE
By Aaron Matthew Weldon
Shortly after my wife had given birth to our first son, I held my little
boy and was immediately struck by his helplessness. Before that moment, I may have had some idea of how dependent a child is on others,
but it became very real when my wife handed him to me on that sweltering summer day in Washington, D.C. Those moments at the beginning of
life, as well as at its end, show us in a vivid way one of the deepest truths
about being human: we are radically dependent on others.
We know that “no man is an island.” We are all interdependent, and
our actions affect others. But in much of our culture, we glorify the idea
of total independence and self-sufficiency. Dr. Seuss’s character from
the The Lorax, the Once-ler, puts it well when he says, “I have my rights,
sir, and I’m telling you, I intend to go on doing just what I do.” The independent woman. The self-made man. The myth of the self-sufficient
individual can be seductive, but it is false.
This individualistic idea of the human person comes to the fore in
debates about assisted suicide. Proponents talk as if the suffering patient
were the only person involved. To be sure, in these discussions, we want
to focus on people who are suffering. At the same time, we cannot forget
that a suicide is a death in a family, a wound to a community. It leaves
others behind who must pick up the pieces. In fact, a recent study in
Switzerland, where this practice is legal, found that one out of six friends
or family members who are present at an assisted suicide suffer afterward
from clinical depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. It seems assisted suicide doesn’t end suffering. Rather, it transfers suffering to others. This is a profoundly communal issue, and we must see it as such.
We tend to hear about the family, friends, and community who surround the elderly or terminally ill when the one contemplating suicide says
that she doesn’t want to be a burden on those she loves. In a culture
formed from the myth of the autonomous individual, we struggle with the
thought of being a burden. We feel that our dignity is eroded when we
depend on others to care for us. This is cause for lament. Receiving the
gift of support from loved ones as we approach the end of life is part of
being human. Indeed, the truth of the matter is this: we are all, at all
times, dependent on others.
The myth of the self-made, independent individual clouds our vision,
leading all too many of us to view society as divided between those who
are strong and those who can be cast aside. However, our dependency is
one of the beautiful aspects of human life. We depend on mothers and
fathers to nurture us. We depend on family and friends to put up with
our imperfections. A successful community requires the cooperation of
everyone. The story of a human life is replete with acts of giving and
receiving care. These acts are seeds of a culture of life, a culture that
flourishes when we, dependent creatures that we are, allow ourselves to
rest in our humanness.
