Storylines For Tonight’s Game
• Columbus Looks to Build Off First Win: The Blue Jackets won their first game of the season Tuesday to snap an eight-game
winless skid. It was the deepest Columbus had gone into the season without a win. Previously, the club had gone six games into the
season without a win, going 0-2-4-0 to start the 2001-02 campaign. The Jackets will look to build off of Tuesday’s win when they take
on the Sabres tonight in Buffalo.
• The Wiz is Free, Makes Blue Jackets Debut: D James Wisniewski made his Blue Jackets debut Tuesday against Detroit and had
one shot on goal, a game-high four blocked shots and was +1 in a game-high 27:21 of action. The Canton, Michigan native signed
with the Blue Jackets as a free agent on July 1, 2011 and missed the season’s first eight games due to suspension. Last season he
set career highs in goals (10), assists (41), points (51) and power play goals (7) en route to ranking fifth among NHL defensemen in
points and seventh in assists.
• Nash First Blue Jacket to Play 600 Games; Three Points Shy of 500; One Shot Shy of 2,000: LW Rick Nash, in his ninth NHL
season, became the first Blue Jacket to play in 600 games with the club Oct. 22 at Ottawa. He had points in three-straight games Oct.
18-22 to push his career totals to 262-234-497 and 1,999 shots in 601 games, leaving him four points shy of 500 and one shot shy of
2,000. He is the Blue Jackets all-time leader in games played, goals, assists, points, power play goals (78), power play points (165),
game-winning goals (42), shorthanded goals (12), hat tricks (5), shots on goal, multi-goal games (41) and multi-point games (125). He
has scored at least 30 goals in five of the last six seasons, eclipsed the 30 assist mark in five-straight and has recorded 65-or-more
points in four-straight campaigns.
• Ironman Umberger Scores First of the Year: LW R.J. Umberger scored his first goal of the season this past Tuesday against
Detroit. It was his first goal in 11 games as he last scored Apr. 3, 2011 vs. St. Louis. With 75 goals as a Blue Jacket, he is one goal
shy of tying Nikolai Zherdev (76 goals) for fourth on the Blue Jackets all-time goal scoring list. He also had an assist against the Red
Wings for his first multi-point game of the season. He has set the franchise record for consecutive games played, playing in 255consecutive games, a streak that began Oct. 10, 2008. He broke Jason Chimera’s record of 243, which was set Oct. 9, 2005-Apr. 5,
2008. Umberger has played in 258-straight games overall, dating back to Apr. 2, 2008 vs. Pittsburgh (with Philadelphia).
• Tonight’s Opponent –Buffalo: Tonight marks first of two meetings overall and lone meeting at First Niagara Center this season
between the Blue Jackets and Sabres. Columbus is 7-4-1 all-time against Buffalo, including a 4-3-0 mark at First Niagara Center. The
Jackets have won three of the past four meetings in Buffalo.
Pair of Firsts: For the first time in franchise history, the Blue Jackets had two players score the first goal of their NHL career in the
same game. C Ryan Johansen and D John Moore each got their first tally in the NHL. Johansen’s goal came in his sixth NHL game and
also was the game-winner. He added an assist for his first NHL multi-point game. Moore’s goal came in his fourth NHL game.
Vermette Est Magnifique: C Antoine Vermette has points in three-straight games after recording an assist on Umberger’s goal this
past Tuesday against Detroit. He has 0-3-3 during that stretch after opening the season pointless the first six games. He has played in
189 consecutive games, the fourth longest streak in franchise history. He trails David Vyborny, who is third on the list at 194 games set
Oct. 17, 2002-Dec. 20, 2005.
My Cousin Vinny: LW Vinny Prospal recorded his second multi-point game of the season Oct. 22 at Ottawa with a pair of assists,
which gave him points in back-to-back games. He has collected 3-5-8 in nine games this season and is tied for the team lead in points
with Rick Nash (3-5-8 in eight games). He has points in six of the nine games and has at least one shot on goal in eight of those
games. Dating back to last season, he has 12-19-31 and is +4 his last 38 games.
Johnson Bolsters Blueline: D Aaron Johnson leads all club defensemen and is fourth overall in scoring with 2-2-4 in five games. In
his last three games, he has notched 2-1-3 with a +1 plus/minus rating and logged 67:18 of ice time. He tallied 1-1-2 and a season-high
25:21 TOI Oct. 21 at Detroit and scored a goal and was +1 in 24:18 of action at Ottawa the following night. Johnson, who was the club’s
fourth pick, 85th overall in the 2001 Entry Draft and spent the 2003-07 with the club, rejoined the Jackets as a free agent last July. His
goal at Detroit was his first with the club since Mar. 29, 2007 vs. Anaheim.
Brassard Bounces Back: After being held without a point and logging less than 13:00 TOI per game in his first five outings this
season, C Derick Brassard has tallied points in three of his last four games with 2-1-3 and averaged just under 18:00 TOI during that
span. He scored his first goal of the season vs. Dallas on Oct. 18, added a goal at Detroit on Oct. 21 and picked up an assist at Ottawa
on Oct. 22.
Tyutin His Own Horn to 500 NHL Games: LW Rick Nash is not the only player to hit a games played milestone, as D Fedor Tyutin
played the 500th game of his NHL career Oct. 22 at Ottawa. In 501 career games, he has collected 37-124-161 and 325 penalty
minutes, including 22-73-95 and 164 penalty minutes in 251 games with the Blue Jackets. He had an assist at Ottawa and has played
in 21-or-more minutes in every game this season, including 25-plus the last three games.
Special Teams Notes: Power Play: Columbus ranks 26th in the NHL in power play percentage (11.1 percent). The club has scored
