Crematory Operator Certification Course
- Larry Stuart, Jr., CMS (6 CEUs)
An operator that has successfully completed this Crematory Operator
Certification Training will not only be given the knowledge to react
to situations that may arise in the crematory, but be better able to
anticipate potential issues before they occur. This means cremating
safer, more environmentally conscious, and more fuel efficient. A fully
trained operator means less chance of error, and better service to your
families. Proudly displaying your training certificate shows the public
that you care and are committed to being a responsible and reputable
cremationist.
This program also meets the requirements for the CANA manufacturer
self study program. You simply apply for the CANA Certification, pass
the CANA Certification Test and you will also hold the CANA Crematory
Operator Certification.

The Real Project - Jacqueline Taylor, Ph.D (2 CEUs)
This seminar presents the doctoral research of Jacquelyn Taylor who
studied the process of how occupations become professions with a
specific focus on the history of funeral service education and licensing
credentials. Her findings reveal that for over fifty years, funeral
directors have been faced with numerous opportunities to chart a
course toward the true professional status to which they have always
aspired. But progress has been stymied by repeated confusion and
conflict among stakeholders. The course will conclude with a specific
recommendation, called the “REAL Project,” that can resolve the
impasse and move the industry forward.
Preneed for the Next Generation - Mark Owen, FDLIC (2 CEUs)
This Insurance Continuing Education Seminar, which is also approved
for funeral director continuing education, will explore the changing
demographics of today’s preneed consumer and the specific needs of
the baby boomer generation.
*Extra fee for Insurance CE.
Networking Luncheon - (1 CEU)
What challenges do firms of similar size face? What solutions have
been found to overcome these obstacles? This is a unique opportunity
to discuss issues and concerns with owners and employees of funeral
homes of similar size. Breakouts will be for firms with 0-75 cases, 76200 cases and over 200 cases.
* $30 Ticket required
Hoodlums to Hackers: How Criminals Get Your Information and
What You Can Do to Stop Them - Jeff Lanza (1.5 CEUs)
This non-technical presentation is an informative and descriptive
account of how criminals, fraudsters, scam artists and computer
hackers have taken advantage of vulnerabilities and weak defenses
to commit their crimes and what we can do to mitigate and prevent
today’s hoodlums and hackers from victimizing us on a personal and
business level.
Business Succession Planning - Shannen Mayfield, CPA (2 CEUs)
Sponsored by Federated Funeral Directors of America
This will be an introductory level discussion of the business succession
planning process, personal and business goal setting, ownership
transaction options, the process of determining and factors affecting
your business’s value, and options for structuring a transaction. The
program will help you assure that your funeral home will be able to
continue to serve your community.
The Tri-State Cremation Incident: Mistakes Made, Lessons
Learned - Dr. Frederick Snow (2 CEUs)
In 2002, a woman notified local authorities that she found a human
skull near the Tri-State Crematory near Noble, Georgia. This led to
the discovery of 334 bodies on the property. Of the bodies recovered,
only 225 were identified. Identification efforts were hampered because
the crematory operator, Brent Marsh, kept no records of the bodies he
picked up from funeral homes, nursing homes, and hospices.
Marsh was charged with 787 felony counts and was sentenced to 75
years in prison with 12 to serve. The criminal investigation was the
largest and most expensive in Georgia history, and the final cost to the
state exceeded $10,000,000.
This presentation details how the recovery efforts were initiated and
how the dead were identified. The presentation emphasizes the
loopholes in the law and the mistakes made by funeral directors that
allowed the situation to continue undetected for five years.

State Association Annual Meetings
Each state funeral directors association will hold their annual business
meeting and service of remembrance. NFDA Secretary Bob Arrington
of Arrington Funeral Directors in Jackson, Tennessee will provide an
NFDA Update at each of these meetings.
The Strangest Secret About Funeral Service
- Todd Van Beck (2 CEUs)
Sponsored by Batesville Casket
Most of us are well familiar with the DNA of funeral service, but have
you ever considered that a “secret” exists concerning the mission and
dedication to our great profession?
This seminar explores the idea of what the secret of success is. If you
start out today with 100 people at 25 years of age by the time they are
65 one will be rich beyond belief, 4 will be financially successful, 5 will
still be working and a whopping 54 will be broke. How can this be?
No matter what the ranting and ravings of the anti-funeral people have
been and continue to be funeral service is indeed a noble calling – but
today with all the myriad of changes in life styles, rituals, expectations
and just one change after another the “secret” of success in funeral
service can be frustrating, cloudy and worse disheartening.
This seminar is no Pollyanna stuff. We are all too old and experienced
to pull the magic rabbit out of the hat. This seminar will take a journey
into the notions of the “worthy ideal” “the acre of diamonds” and will
end by sharing the “secret.”
Here is a hint: Emerson said “A person is what he/she thinks about
all day long.” Do we think about funeral service all day long? This
question will be the center of this motivational seminar.
Cremation Liability: Is Anyone Really Getting Sued?
- Poul Lemasters, Lemasters Consulting (1 CEU)
Over and over we hear about the rising liability associated with
cremation. Stories float through the industry about wrongful
cremations. Horror stories appear in the press about crematories that
mishandle remains. But is this common practice? Are providers really
getting sued all the time? This seminar provides insight to real, current
litigation affecting the industry today. The focus is on the “common”
problems causing lawsuits and the prevention measures needed to
prevent.
Wednesday, May 8, 2013
Social Security and EDR - (.5 CEU)
Presenter John Powell, a Public Affairs/Social Insurance Specialist
from the Social Security Administration’s Regional Office, will provide
an overview of the EDR process focusing specifically on how death
data is posted to their records. They will address some common
misconceptions about this procedure to help the parties involved gain
a better understanding of this important information sharing process.
* Limited space available
The Lifeline of the Funeral Home - The Telephone
- Todd Van Beck (1.5 CEUs)
Sponsored by Batesville Casket
The goal of this seminar is to heighten the sensitivities and improve
the abilities of individuals in our profession concerning basic telephone
skills and etiquette. More business opportunities are lost due to poor
phone service and poor telephone treatment than poor products.
Meeting clientele by phone can be very successful or just the opposite.
This seminar will better equip you to professionally interact with the
public, create additional credibility for the firm and smooth crisis call
situations.
What’s New to Get You Sued? - Poul Lemasters, Lemasters Consulting
(1.5 CEUs)
The Funeral Profession has been around forever, and many may
argue that things never change. But, the funeral profession is
constantly evolving through services, technology, regulation, and
overall consumer knowledge. Unfortunately, with changes come
certain risks. In the case of the funeral profession one risk is that a
professional will do something wrong and get sued. This seminar looks
at various sectors of the funeral profession, including: embalming,
alkaline hydrolysis, technology, and regulation. Then, this seminar will
discuss the specific changes and the risks of liability associated. Most
importantly this seminar will provide proactive procedures to prevent
these new risks.
Grief at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue: Bereavement in White House
Families - Harold Ivan Smith (1.5 CEUs)
Sooner or later, everyone is touched by grief---even those who live
at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Twenty-seven presidential families
have had a child die, some while in the White House. Three first ladies
have died in the White House—one during her husband’s reelection
campaign. James Garfield’s dying lasted an excruciating eighty days!
Two of Abraham Lincoln’s sons battled life-threatening illnesses; one
died, one lived. On many occasions the East Room has been used for
various types of funeral rituals. White House grievers have lessons for
funeral professionals.
Everyday Excellence in Embalming - Jeff Chancellor, CFSP (2 CEUs)
Sponsored by H.S. Eckels & Company
It is no secret that death care is changing. Postmortem intervention,
changing perspectives on health and safety,
environmental
awareness and new employee attitudes are causing funeral service
and embalming to be framed out of context. How have we as a
profession and as service businesses responded to these changes?
During this two hour session we will use digital video, PowerPoint
and facilitative group discussion to explore the topic of embalming
and mortuary care from the perspective of re-constructing human
remains, re-constructing work flows, re-constructing consumer
