About Us

Garifuna Film Festival is a forum to enlighten,
educate, and give voice to indigenous
cultures around the globe.

In its fifth year, the GIIFF showcases a variety
of films and documentaries by Garifuna
filmmakers and other indigenous people.

Last year GIIFF featured an eclectic lineup of
screenings, panels, art exhibits, music,
conversations, and interactive events.

FESTIVAL HEADQUARTERS:
ELECTRIC LODGE, 1416 Electric Ave., Venice Beach
Located in the heart of Southern California’s Silicon Beach, Electric Lodge
is one of the first solar-powered performing arts facilities in the country.
Electric Lodge acts as both lab and performance space for artists, dancers,
filmmakers, and actors - its theatre, lobby, gallery, and patio pockets will
serve as our GIIIFF ‘16 hub.

Launched on May 26, 2012, the Festival is
recognized by the City of Los Angeles as a forum
for advancing global, humanitarian impact
through film, art, panels, and performances.

Former Mayor Villaraigosa and the City Council
proclaimed May 26 Garifuna International Film
Day in the City of Los Angeles.

 MISSION
AND VISION

The Garifuna Film Festival is a vehicle that allows
Garifuna and all indigenous people to showcase the
culture and traditional art forms rarely seen outside of
their region.

The Festival seeks to preserve and share the Garifuna
and global indigenous cultures through feature films,
documentaries, art, music, and dance, workshops, and
performances.

The visual images are archived as part of the Festival’s
mission to curate and educate communities about
these wonderful, thriving cultures – some of which are
in danger of extinction.
