President’s Phlock Talk...Jeannine Happ
Happy Summer! I’m looking forward to everything coming up, and I’d like to
get a sense of why people aren’t showing up for events. I’ll be setting up a poll
on the yahoo list to try to flesh out some reasons, and maybe we can come up
with solutions that will meet the needs of all of our members.
Special points of interest:
Jeannine in Key West.
Concert report
• Larry’s Famous Etoufee
• New Members
Jimmy once again proved why people are willing to dish out huge sums of hard earned money to see
him every year. This was by far the best concert experience I have had! He played Floridays which is
my favorite song, and Tampico Trauma, which I haven't heard in concert since he stopped playing
Northern CA in October. He was joined by Bill Payne of Little Feat, and played a decent version of Little
Feat's Dixie Chicken.
• 2006 MOTM
• Phins To The West
• Off To See The Keys
• Photo Gallery
What really sent me over the top this year was the spirit of camaraderie. All of the great energy flowing
from the band and the audience, being able to meet new people, and old friends and have a fun
time! I haven't enjoyed a concert like that in I don't know how long.
I have to give credit to my BOD for stepping up to the plate to recruit new members, and we had a great
showing at our pre-concert party, where the feeling of family really started!

Another Successful Phins to the West
The 3rd Annual Phins to the West was held at the Avi Casino and Resort in
Laughlin, NV. A 9-hour drive from Sacramento or 2 hours from Las Vegas,
the Avi is a mirage in the desert. It has a movie theater (saw Hoot), 3 buffets, a café, a pool and a beach on the Colorado.
Representing Latitude 38 were Kathleen Henry, Joe & Deb Pena, Linda Sortal, Roni & Skeets Jennings, Russ & Susie Hudson, Sandy Waters, and
Cathie Wartelle. Old friend, Deb McCall, was there too. We hung out with
some of the Pirates of the Delta and met a lot new friends.
A lot of great bands played this year including Hanna’s Reef, Jim Hoehn,

Rebuilding Together
Helping Our
Community
and
Environment”
“
On April 8th our members were
spending their Saturday helping
those less fortunate. J9 Happ,
Rich and Julie Duchscherer,
Susie and Rus Hudson, Kathleen Henry, Carroll Wills and
Cheryl Bashor were the cleanup crew. We spent the day
removing all the junk from the
basement, backyard, garage
and house we were assigned to.
The junk just kept coming and
coming and coming. It was our
job to get the property ready for
the skilled workers that were
coming back the following
weekends. The homeowner
Delphrene Smith-Franklin has
back problems and has been
unable to keep up with the
maintenance of her home.
Each volunteer received a free
t-shirt and lunch and a very
touching thank you from Del
and her family. Most everyone
was in tears as we said our
good-byes.
The Marine Mammal Center
The MMC is currently undergo-
ing construction to expand,
improve and update the facility
but that didn’t keep the Latitude 38 PHC volunteers away.
On June 24th Susie and Rus
Hudson, Jesus and Tonya Cano,
Ray and Cheryl Bashor, Cathie
Wartell, Kathleen Henry and
Kathleen’s nephew – the always hard working Anthony Cole
made the long trek to Sausalito
and The Marine Mammal Center. The work was back breaking and boring. We were instructed to remove any and all
Cape Ivy we came across in a
1/8 acre parcel the center was
just given. To make it worse we
were asked to avoid removing
or stepping on any other vegetation. Yea right, the Cape Ivy
was everywhere and intertwined
in everything. We did our best
and removed mounds and
mounds of the aggressive nonnative plant. After our shift
Tony, the volunteer coordinator
and our personal tour guide,
gave us the special “Rock Star”
tour of the facility. We got to go
behind the scenes and see the
mammals up close and personal!

a kick butt show. Former Coral

great as always. Amy even

signed autographs with us.
Whoever has those pictures
and the ones with Sunny Jim,

The food was wonderful, the
staff friendly, the new pool was
out of this world, the music
thumping, and the weather was
hot!
My traveling mates and I had
the pleasure of having breakfast with Jerry Gontang of Stars
on the Water. As sweet a guy
as you ever want to meet.
The Avi Resort has a beach on
the Colorado, a brand new pool,
a great buffet restaurant and a
café with a 99 cents breakfast
to die for. Ok maybe not die,
but it was good.
Some of our members bid in
the silent auctions and some
even won. Dale won a basket
of DVD & VHS movies. I won a
bronze Hawaiian Hula Statue by
artist Kim Taylor Reece.

To butterfly chicken, start by removing neck, giblets, and cut away excess fat. Next,
take a pair of kitchen shears and cut along both sides of backbone to remove. Turn
chicken over skin side up and press down between the breasts to break the keel bone
(this will allow the chicken to lay very flat on grill).
In a small bowl, combine jerk seasoning, cloves, and cinnamon. Sprinkle liberally over

all sides of chicken; set aside. Chicken can be prepared up to this point a day ahead.
For glaze: In a small pot over medium-high heat, combine all glaze ingredients. Bring to boil and cook until
glaze thickens, about 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from heat; set aside.
Set up grill for indirect grilling over medium heat or heat a 10-inch cast iron grill pan over medium-high
heat. Oil grate when ready to start cooking.
Place the chicken in the skillet skin side down and cook until skin is crisp and has nice grill marks. Brush
the flesh side with the glaze, then turn the chicken over and brush the skin side.
Transfer the grill pan to the oven and bake until chicken is cooked golden and the
internal temperature of the thigh registers 180 degrees F on an instant-read thermometer, about 30 minutes. Transfer to cutting board; let rest 5 minutes before
cutting. Serve hot.

Off To See The Keys
Most people drive to Key West from Fort Lauderdale or Miami (Don’t stop no matter what) Airports. So in the interest of prudent planning,
here are some interesting stops along A1A. There a few street names so places are listed by mile marker, e.g. MM88 is mile marker 88 and
either Gulf side or Ocean side. Going to Key West the Gulf side is on the right. :) Of, course MM 0 is in KW so officially the Keys start in Florida City at MM 110.
You first choice coming upon entering the Keys is either to stay on A1A or go down Card Sound Road.
Road Take the Road. You will come across
Alabama Jack’s. It’s right beside the Card Sound Bridge and is a Keys tradition. They have friendly folks and good grub. They even provide
bug spray for you right on the table.
KEYS SURVIVAL SUPPLIES.
SUPPLIES Must haves for any Keys visit. Water, limes, cocoa butter, Corona, aloe vera gel, salt shakers, mangos,
cocktail sauce, Cortizone 10 Anti-Inch Cream (I can personally vouch for this) for the no see’ums, Advil, Mountain Dew, Rum, and BandAids.
Card Sound Road takes you back to US 1 without backtracking. You are now in Key Largo—the
only town named for a movie. That’s right,
Largo
Key Largo was originally call Rock Harbor.

Good food, good phiends, good drinks,
good times for the entire phamily. We
get our own site well separated for the

look-out for a roomy open floor plan. We
are still looking for a place to hold the
poker tournament. Since this is a charity
fund raiser we don’t want to have to pay
for a hall. Do you have a home that can
accommodate 5 eight player poker tables? Do you have access to a hall or club
house? Please, please, please contact J9
Happ or Cheryl Bashor with location possibilities.
We are going to hold a silent auction during the tournament and need donations.
Members will have the chance to earn 2
parrot points for participation in this
event. 1 point for those members who
sign up to play in the tournament and 1
point for a donation worth $40.00 or more
for the silent auction. Start canvassing
your local merchants and ask them to
donate to this worthy cause. Safeway,
Save Mart, Best Buy, Applebee’s and
Costco are good places to try. You would
be surprised at how easy it is to get a
merchant to donate. Ask you phavorite
local restaurant, grocer…do you have a
phamily member or phriend that owns a
business, a time share, cabin…donate
your frequent flyer miles...be creative, be
brave, ask and you shall receive. It never
hurts to ask.
