Devotional
Forever
Faithful
by Dan Cotton
The 11th chapter of Hebrews
chronicles the men of faith in the
Old Testament. People like Abel,
Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac,
Jacob, Joseph and Moses.
Today we hear a great deal
about righteousness by faith. And
indeed we should. The Apostle
Paul’s good news was chiefly about
salvation through faith in Jesus.
Quoting the prophet Habakkuk, he
stated that “The righteous will live
by faith.” Romans 1:17 NIV.
Unfortunately a feature of
human faith in Jesus is that we often
turn it on and off as though it is
controlled by a rusty water spigot.
However the faithfulness of
God never fails. It perseveres for
His purposes.
Today’s world is in chaotic
trouble. Failing economies,
bankrupt local and national
governments, social upheavals,
moral decline, racial and ethnic
hatred, wars and rumors of
wars. Does this sound like an
apocalyptic picture?
Changes seem to be more
rapid today than in the past. And
change is to be expected as we
move through these final hours of
earth’s history
But joy of joys, God is
sovereign still. Nothing will occur
that does not in the end serve His
eternal purpose. He is faithful to
His people and to His mission!
Quiet Hour Ministries is
also changing in its 75th year of
ministry. We will soon introduce
a leadership team—a new speaker
and new CFO—to join current
CEO Randy Bates. At that time
Pastor Bill Tucker, who has led this
ministry since 1993, will move into
full retirement.
There will no doubt be other
changes as well. But through it
all we are unswervingly focused
on strengthening our worldwide
outreach and carrying the good
news to more and more people.
Several years ago I visited
Mother Teresa’s under-equipped
hospital in the teeming heart of
Calcutta. As my eyes took in row
after row of dying men and women,
I saw a tall, young, handsome man
coming down the stairs.
After talking together for
a moment I asked him a final
question, “How long do you plan
to remain here?” His answer was
brief. “Forever.”
May God help each one of us to
be forever faithful to the mission to
which our Savior has called us. 

MAILBAG
My small church has been
disbanded and I have struggled
with where to place my offerings.
Well, here is a miracle story for you
all. The other day I was balancing
my checkbook and it was coming
up short. I didn’t stress, figuring
God would take care of me and
His church. I opened the mail
and received your plea for our
brethren in Africa—a place dear
to my heart as I spent a short
time in Africa as a missionary. The
next piece of mail I opened was a
refund check from my mortgage
company. Totally unexpected!
Here’s the miracle—you requested
$425 and my refund check was for
$485! I’m giving it all to you.
— Lori N., Blairstown, NJ
Just a note to let you know that
your letter brought back wonderful
memories about Malawi. Way
back in 1983 I spent time there as
a full-time missionary—500 were
baptized. We were in the Cambodia
refugee camps—sad times and
scary times. The Lord blessed and
made them great times. Wish I
could do more.
— Richard K., North Highlands, CA
We have a practice of praying over
our Christmas cards throughout
the year. Yours came to the front
of the stack this morning, so we
prayed for you. We pray that you
will feel God’s watch care as you
continue to labor for Him.
— Rose and Preston F., Pittsburg, CA
Enclosed is a money order from
our special mission offering
by our Sabbath school class in
Lansing, Michigan. We would like
for the funds to be used for the
orphanage project at the YAPI
Adventist orphanage in Minahasa,
Indonesia. We pray that these
funds will help with the needs still
existing in providing a safe shelter
for the children and for the new
chapel in the building. May God
continue to bless each one of you
in your work for Him.

Through My Eyes
Living On The
Ed ge W i t h God
by David Wilkins, M.D.
What if you could be on an
adventure to love and build
friendships with people in unfamiliar
places and different cultures? What if
you had a chance to experience the
music, cuisine and unique
celebrations of your new friends?
What if, while experiencing all this, you got to
speak of your best friend Jesus Christ and bring hope
to those hungering for good news? What if you could
rejoice with your new friends as you watch them
respond to the love of Jesus publicly by being baptized?
What if you knew you were doing exactly what
our Father wanted you to do? What if you were
assured that the Holy Spirit would energize your
efforts, feeble as they might be, to bring God’s saving
grace to others?
If you think this sounds a little like heaven you’d
be right!
When you team up with Quiet Hour Ministries
to do our Lord’s business these “what ifs” become
realities. Prepare to experience boundless joy as the
Holy Spirit inhabits your adventure and changes
lives. Your life and the lives of everyone on your
mission team will never be the same. When you
venture outside your comfort zone for God you open
your life up to miraculous things!
I just returned from a mission trip to Peru with
QHM staff and many friends. It was exhilarating to
sense the enthusiasm and hunger for spiritual things
in the hearts of the Peruvian people. Experiencing
the richness that comes from knowing that we, our
new friends and Jesus belong to each other energized
our time together.
Through health talks and clinics I experienced
a special connection with my new friends in Peru. I
was able to do something tangible for them and they
taught me how to be happy while living simply.
Hundreds of individuals were able for the first

time in years to read their Bibles with the simple
reading glasses we were able to provide. I got to
watch the unbelievable joy this brought them. Their
smiles and hugs said it all. They reminded me what
a treasure it is to be able to read what the God of the
universe has to say to each of us personally.
Watching the hunger in their hearts for the love
and forgiveness of Jesus quickened a new hunger
in my heart to experience that love anew. Watching
them devour the words of life from our Lord in the
Bible caused a new hunger in me to more often take
in those same words of life.
When you return home from a Quiet Hour
Ministries mission adventure, life and eternity will
look a lot different. The happiness and peace in
your life will be palpable and contagious. It will
show in your face, body language and the way you
choose to live and love others. Nothing will be like
it was before. 

Nothing Short
of Spectacular
by Amalia Marin
Stories of lives changed during our evangelism mission trip to Peru
It was still dark and
cold outside as I quietly
walked down the two
flights of stairs to the lobby.
I did not want to wake
other guests or startle the
receptionist and doorman
who surely would still be
sleeping at that early hour.
Pastor Bill would be down any
minute and Denis Vaca, pastor of
the Miller Central Seventh-day
Adventist Church would arrive
soon. Then we’d be off to do
visitations. He assured us the best
time to catch people at home was
very early in the morning, before
they left for work. So for the first
time in our lives, we were doing
visitations at 5 a.m.!
That’s how we began nearly
every morning of our recent
evangelism mission trip in Tacna,
Peru. Our team of 23 volunteers
ECHOES
Echoes Fall 2012.indd 6
FALL 2012 held evangelistic meetings and
programs as well as free medical
clinics. And of course there were
our early morning visits in the
humble homes of the local people.
Translating for Pastor Bill
Tucker throughout the mission
trip, I saw the Holy Spirit move
powerfully among us, changing the
lives of our mission team members
and the precious people in Tacna.
I was there, I saw it happen
and I know none of our lives will
ever be the same again! The stories
I’m about to share are true, the
result of the Holy Spirit’s work that
is nothing short of spectacular!
We met Pedro Daniel on our

first Sabbath morning in Tacna as
he was teaching the Sabbath school
lesson to his small group at the
Miller church. Several times a week
Pedro meets with them to study
the Bible and pray in preparation
for baptism. In fact, more than 28
other small groups at the Miller
church are doing the same thing!
So what makes Pedro’s group
so special? Well, he’d joined the
Adventist Church just three
months before our encounter. His
was a dramatic conversion from
gang leader and drug pusher to
disciple of Jesus Christ. He had a
powerful testimony and boldness
for the Lord!
Brother Jorge Flores is a wellseasoned soul winner and one
of the fulltime Bible instructors
for Quiet Hour Ministries doing
supporting work in Tacna to
prepare for our meetings. Two of
his students were Victor and Sonia.
This recovering drug addict gave his heart to the Lord during our meetings!
They asked for urgent prayer for
their 17-year-old daughter who
had recently run away from home.
What a blessing to share words
I saw the Holy Spirit move powerfully
among us, changing the lives of
our mission team members and the
precious people in Tacna.
Sonia and her young son had
only recently been baptized, but
her greatest desire was that her
husband Victor would join them in
this decision. Although Victor had
known the Adventist Church as a
child, he was never baptized and
was sure that he would not be able
to live up to God’s standards. As we
visited with Victor, God brought a
powerful conviction to his heart and
before leaving Peru we rejoiced as
he decided to follow Christ and to
be the spiritual leader of his home.
Roger and Susana were
heartbroken when we visited.
of courage with the family and
to join with them in a circle of
prayer. Despite their heartache,
this precious family attended
nearly every meeting and their son
Anthony was baptized amid many
tears of joy!
Each night, Mario hobbled
painfully on homemade wooden
crutches to his usual front pew
seat. On some nights a strong
deacon would physically carry him
to his seat. We watched as caring
family members attended patiently
to Mario’s needs.
One evening Pastor Bill decided
(800)900-9021 | www.twitter.com/qhministries Echoes Fall 2012.indd 7
7
that we were going to buy Mario a
wheelchair. Pastor Vaca shopped
for the best price and during a
Sabbath evening meeting Pastor Bill
presented Mario with a wheelchair
of his very own. The following
Sabbath, Mario was baptized!
Aime, Angel and Sonia were
anxiously waiting for our visit on
a Sunday morning. Elva, a faithful
deaconess at the Miller church, had
requested prayer and fasting for her
sisters Aime and Sonia and their
children. For several years Elva
had faithfully tried to witness to
her siblings, but they had resisted
every appeal to follow Jesus Christ.
Perhaps, suggested Elva, our group
of visitors from America could
reach them.
As we talked with them, Aime
asked Pastor Bill questions about
God and the Bible, as did her eldest
son Angel. Even Sonia chimed in
with questions. But in the end Jesus
overcame every human argument
and they all accepted His invitation
to eternal life with Him! Aime and
her sons Angel and Renzo were

baptized together at the close our
meetings. Sonia is taking Bible
studies and we’re praying she too
will soon be baptized.
Brother Olo and his wife had
been studying the Scriptures with
Vicente and his wife for some time.
But they had reached an impasse
and felt unqualified to answer
Vicente’s questions. Although we
arrived late, Vicente waited for us
and we studied together for well
over an hour. Questions about
evolution and creation marked our
conversation. In the end Vicente
decided to follow Jesus all the way,
trusting in the Holy Spirit to teach
him the truth!
While preparing for our visits
early one morning, I glanced at
the bright orange flashlight on my
nightstand. Back in 2001 during
my first evangelistic series in
Tacna, a 5.6 earthquake taught
me the importance of having a
good flashlight handy at all times!
Without thinking about it I placed
the flashlight in my bag.
It was still dark when we
arrived at the home of Alfonso and
Maria. He works for the Peruvian
government, she is a homemaker.
Alfonso was an active Adventist
when he married Maria, a nonAdventist at the time. Through
Alfonso’s testimony and instruction
she accepted Jesus Christ as her
Savior and joined the church!
But sadly he had since fallen
away. As the years passed, Maria’s
faith grew stronger but Alfonso
continued to be uninterested
until a sudden illness threatened
Maria’s life. Then Alfonso promised
God that if He would heal Maria,
Alfonso would return to the church.
As Alfonso was sharing this
story with us, the lights went
out! Such blackouts are common
throughout the city, usually lasting
about four hours. We could not
have known a blackout would
happen, but Jesus knew. I brought
out my flashlight and we continued
talking with Alfonso. During that
visit he surrendered his life anew to
Jesus Christ!
Pilar usually takes the bus very
early every Sunday to her job in
nearby Chile, but she had to pick
up her new eyeglasses in Tacna
before her departure. So she was at
home when we arrived that Monday
morning. Her husband Segundo
is a retired police officer, but his
pension check does not cover the
family’s needs. That’s why Pilar must
work outside of the home to make
ends meet. Consequently she had
been working on the Sabbath, even
though she believes this is God’s day.
Segundo wanted to be baptized
but didn’t want to do so without
Pilar. As we talked she crossed her
arms over her chest and shook her
head as if to say “This is not going
to happen.” Then God impressed
Pastor Vaca to share his own
mother’s testimony of how she
moved ahead with baptism even
though her husband refused to join
her and how she only asked that he
would be present at her baptism.
Segundo was convinced. He
would be baptized the following
Sabbath! Seeing her husband’s
resolve, Pilar said that she too
would be baptized, as she did not
want her husband and young son
to prepare for heaven without her!
We saw many more miracles
like these in the humble homes of
the people of Tacna!
A divided family saw three
of their sons surrender their lives
to Jesus. Some 17 recovering
drug addicts and alcoholics were
baptized, eight seriously ill prison
inmates were anointed and a total
of 1,024 people were baptized
during our evangelistic meetings
in Tacna!
But that’s not all, through the
Bible studies our meeting attendees
requested, at this writing the
baptism total stands at 2,364! That
number is expected to be nearly
4,000 by year end. Praise God!
We know that God will
continue to bless the believers in
Tacna as they reach out and share
His saving grace.
I encourage you to join Quiet
Hour Ministries and become a
part of the worldwide spread of
the gospel! Your prayers, gifts and
participation on an evangelism
mission trip are all needed. I
guarantee your life will never be
the same again! 

God’s Amazing Work
by George Jackson
Quiet Hour Ministries partners with Weimar College to reach out in Zimbabwe
Our bus pulled to a dusty stop. As I looked
out the window I was shocked to see a crowd of probably
200 people, all looking at us expectantly. I could see the
primitive huts they live in.
Our mission team had arrived
in the middle of nowhere in rural
Zimbabwe. We had travelled a road
that seemed more like a sandy river
bed to reach this remote place.
Some of the waiting crowd had
begun walking at 4 a.m. to get here
for our 1:30 p.m. free health expo.
After singing a few songs of praise,
we began our health screenings.
It soon became painfully
apparent the people didn’t have
enough to eat. We learned that
the rain had not come at the right
time so the corn harvest was very
poor. Their unhealthily thin bodies
reflected that.
Some had not even eaten
that day. I’d never experienced
ministering to a large group of
ECHOES
Echoes Fall 2012.indd 10
FALL 2012 people—none of whom had
enough to eat.
During the health screenings,
Jill Siebold, one of our team
members, asked about blood sugar
details and number of meals eaten.
She was saddened to see how they
responded not by how many meals
they’d eat in a day, but simply
whether or not they could even eat
in a day.
As we continued our health
expo, a young boy was brought to
us on a donkey cart. He had HIV
and was too weak even to walk.
He badly needed good nutrition. It
was heartbreaking to see.
Unlike the other places in
Zimbabwe many of the people
here didn’t speak English. As we
concluded our health screening,
the chief told us the people thought
this was such a blessing.
Watching the people begin
walking home, many with nothing
to eat, I wondered what we really
did for them that made this so
special. Then it clicked—it was
because we made an effort out of
“It was such a blessing because
you could see the young
people were really excited
about the Word of God”

love to minister to their needs. It
struck a chord in their hearts.
We ran a number of
health expos in other towns.
Everywhere people responded
to the practical health ministry.
I was amazed at how easy it was
for our students to be able to pray
with a Hindu or Muslim after
ministering to their health.
It was wonderful to see God
working through our team and to
be a witness and a blessing to the
people of Zimbabwe.
This was our second mission
trip to Zimbabwe made possible
through a partnership with
Quiet Hour Ministries. Picking
up where our last outreach left
off, we continued to minister to
local orphans.
This time we wanted to work
specifically with the older orphans
to encourage them to make
decisions for Christ. Our ministry
included evening meetings with
craft activities for younger orphans
and special programs for older kids.
This part of the trip was so
rewarding. A number of the
orphan youth made a decision for
baptism! Praise God!
“It was such a blessing because
you could see the young people
were really excited about the Word
of God,” said team member
Madeline Cardona. “Just looking
into their eyes and seeing them write
down ‘I want to be baptized’ was so
special it made me want to cry.”
Many of these precious
children have very little hope. In a
generation ravaged by HIV/AIDS
and facing extreme poverty, their
future can often look bleak. What
a blessing then for us to be able to
bring some sunshine to their lives
and share the hope of the gospel.
We were delighted to provide
the orphans with backpacks,
personal items, vitamins, clothing
and shoes. We even brought a
donated wheelchair for an orphan
student who had been badly
injured in a vehicle accident.
Last year on our Zimbabwe
trip we saw God’s care and
protection when our mission team
survived a potentially fatal bus
crash. This year one of our biggest
evidences of God being in control
was when we were already running
late to the airport to return home
and the bus broke down.
After a long delay beside the
highway, we were finally picked up
by a second bus. However, it was
clear we were hopelessly late to
catch our plane. And the new bus
driver didn’t even know how to get
to the airport! That was when God
stepped in.
One of our team members,
Nick Knecht, managed to use his
iPhone GPS to direct the bus driver
through a complex maze of streets
and turns to get us to the airport.
We made it to the airport
about 20 minutes after our plane
(800)900-9021 | www.twitter.com/qhministries Echoes Fall 2012.indd 11
11
was supposed to depart. We walked
up to the check-in counter and
they handed us boarding passes for
a plane that had already left. But
as we got to the gate we realized
the enormous miracle God had
performed for us. Our plane was
still there an hour after it was
supposed to have departed!
So the excitement lasted to the
final minute!
This special mission trip made
such an impact on the lives of our
team members. We know that many
lives were changed in Zimbabwe
too. As team member Aubrey Seiler
said, “Yes, God has taken us out
of Zimbabwe but He hasn’t taken
Zimbabwe out of our hearts.”
We are so grateful to Quiet
Hour Ministries for partnering
with us to make this trip possible.
And thanks to you too for all your
prayers and support! 

The Kiev Medical Center nears completion For a number of years you’ve seen our
updates about the Kiev Medical Center, a Seventhday Adventist health ministry outpost in the heart of
Kiev, Ukraine.
The completed exterior of the Kiev Medical Center.
Life-expectancy is alarmingly
low in Kiev, a teeming city of more
than 2.6 million people, and in
Ukraine as a whole. Poor lifestyle
decisions, including rampant
alcoholism, are the primary reason.
Stepping into this void will be
the Kiev Medical Center, which will
offer medical and dental care along
with lifestyle counseling, therapy
and an active evangelistic outreach.
The ultimate objective in all its
work will be to uplift Christ as the
Savior and Healer. An Adventist
congregation will even meet at the
Kiev Medical Center.
We are delighted to announce
that the center has made great
strides toward completion since
we reported the urgent needs for

piece for the interior is heating.
With the winter fast approaching the
building will soon be unusable until a
central heating system is installed.
A connection to the city’s

a self-contained heating system

over the long run in heating costs.
Local leaders are praying enough

Medical equipment is another
significant need. Some dental
equipment is already on hand, but
procuring the needed tools and
devices will have a major effect on
how quickly the center can scale up
its operations.
As this massive project nears
total completion, we praise God for
the great medical mission work that
is just getting started. This truly is the
lighting of a bright beacon, shining
hope into many darkened lives.

Standing for Christ
Jesús was homeless, drunk and filthy when he took a seat at
our evangelistic meetings in Tacna, Peru. Yet as he listened to
the message of God’s saving grace, tears flowed down his face.
Our mission team members encouraged Jesús and prayed
many times for him. When a call was made to accept Christ,
Jesús stood and asked to be baptized!

SHARING THE LOVE OF
CHRIST IN SOUTH AFRICA
by Laura West Kong
Together we can make a
difference. And there is no place on
earth where togetherness is more
important than in post-Apartheid
South Africa.
Sanibonani (“Hello, everyone”
in Zulu). This summer, believers
young and old from Brazil, South
Africa and the United States came
together to serve and share the
love of Christ with the people of
Jozini, a town in KwaZulu Natal,
South Africa.
Whether preaching the gospel,
telling a Bible story through
puppets, working to build the
Jozini Seventh-day Adventist
Church and Community Center,
healing the body through the
dental, optical and medical clinics,
or simply sharing a prayer and a
hug with a person in need, each

talents for His kingdom. And they
will never be the same again.

At times, I felt like an
insignificant part of the trip. I was
not able to see what difference the
little things I did made in the lives
ECHOES

FALL 2012 of the people in Jozini. I felt there
was nothing I could do that would
give me the instant gratification of
knowing I’ve made a difference.
I wasn’t the dentist changing
the lives of people by restoring
a smile. I wasn’t the pastor
preaching at the evangelistic
meetings about the awesome God
we serve. I wasn’t leading out the
construction project and using my
expertise to build a firm, sturdy
building for the community. I did
not have the knowledge or the
experience to do anything “big”
for the community of Jozini. I was
simply a mission team member
who served where I was needed.
I began to feel as though I was
drowning in the mundane, if
you will. Then very early one
morning, I woke up with tears
in my eyes wondering why God
placed me in South Africa with
a group of people who were far
better equipped than I to serve.
The mission group would have
been fine without my insignificant
efforts. But God has an interesting
way of showing us He’s in control.
Just as I was feeling
discouraged, God gave me a small,
but very significant assignment.
God reminded me that He called
out to Abraham saying, “I will
make your name great.” He didn’t
say, “Your name is great.” God has
work to do to make my character
match the assignment He
has for me, just as He did
with Abraham.
From my experience
in Jozini, I realize that
this mission trip is only
the first of many. God
14
has called me to go and to share the
gospel because the harvest is plenty,
but the laborers are few. Although
I cannot see what significance
my small efforts in Jozini have
made, I now recognize that small
assignments are not spiritually
insignificant, but how I handle them
dictates to what degree God is able
to trust me with something larger.
I praise God for reminding me
that morning that there is value
in the process, even when I am
feeling restless or discontent. In
Luke 16:10 Jesus says, “Whoever
can be trusted with very little can
be trusted with much.” So I will
work patiently, thanking God for
opportunities, being faithful in the
little things and remembering that
today will be a building block for
future leadership.

TESTIMONY
I’m a planner. For me, having a
plan takes much of the stress out of
getting the job done. We planned for four VBS
sites with hundreds of children
who would be anxiously awaiting
our arrival. Every preparation
was made. Bible stories had
been rehearsed. Crafts were
organized and ready. Songs had
been practiced. And the children
came, lots of them. They came
early and filled the seats in the
simple white tents. But with all our planning,
there was one thing we weren’t
prepared for—no electricity in
the VBS tent at one of the sites. In
the remote, rural town of Jozini,

South Africa, there were no street
lights, no porch lights. Even the
moon seemed to withhold its glow.
Yet the children were there, ready
for a program that would thrill
their hearts and bring the joy of
God’s love into their impoverished
lives. No light. Without it, the pitch
blackness guaranteed there could
be no program. How could we disappoint these
children? We’d been praying for
them for months before we ever set
foot in South Africa. Now was most
certainly time for prayer. We paused
and sought the guidance of the only
One who could impart wisdom
when our best laid plans failed. Our
only resource was prayer and it was
the only one we needed.
Moments later, we were joyfully
conducting a slightly modified
version of our VBS program on
the life of Joseph. The story of
Joseph’s growing faith as he learned
to trust his God when no human
help offered hope, became very
real to us. Did God miraculously
cause the lights in the tent to
work? No. Instead, He reminded
us that He has a thousand ways of
accomplishing His purpose. And
so, by the light of car headlights,
we shared the program God had
led us to prepare. It wasn’t how we
planned it, but the children didn’t
mind. Their enthusiastic responses
proved that it’s God’s love, not
perfect planning, that draws hearts.

Enjoying the Journey
Quiet Hour Ministries mission team shares Christ in Tonga and learns about what really matters
by Joedy Melashenko
Here’s what Betty, one of our mission team
members, had to say:
“Despite their poor materialistic state, the
Tongans are some of the happiest people on earth.
They have few to none of the comforts we have back
home, yet they give and give and dig deeper yet and
keep on giving.
“On our first Sabbath in Tonga, I heard a choir
sing and some of the words acknowledged something
very important. The last two lines said, “Though the
world may think I am poor, I am rich because I have
you Lord.” This is how they live; what they rest in.”
Serving these people was such a blessing. Hope,
another of our mission team members, worked in the
optometry clinic.
“Working in the clinic in Nuku’alofa with the
other team members was simply awesome,” she
said. “On the first day we were able to see 90 people.
It was such a joy to hear them say, ‘I can read!’
Their faces light up as they read whatever they can.
This experience in Tonga with the QHM team has
changed my life!”
Now let me tell you a little bit about the church
we visited in Popua. The local congregation is the
newest in Tonga and is located in the poorest part of
the island.
The poverty in their village is sobering. Yet this
is the fastest growing church on the island, with
lots and lots of young people. On our first Sabbath
in Tonga, our entire group went to the simple,
temporary church in which they were worshipping.
After church, we took food baskets door-todoor, visiting some of the poorest people in the
village. It was a very humbling experience for
our group to talk with people who were so
happy, yet lived in shacks. “This is where
It makes little sense to make
the trip and miss the journey.
So many of us here in North America, with
our fast paced lives, are way too busy to enjoy the
journey. We are experts at multi-tasking! We have
our iPhone calendars maxed out. We try to cram
more and more into our already busy schedules and
we miss so much as a result.
On our recent mission project to the island
Kingdom of Tonga, our 44 team members got this
concept. Believe me, by the end of our time in Tonga
they had a clear picture of what God’s priority is for
our lives!
What an unbelievable adventure we had. As
our mission team members gathered in Tonga for
the two-week mission project, our goals were fourfold: to hold evangelistic meetings at three sites, to
conduct an optometry clinic, to finish construction
on a small church in the village of Kolonga on the
eastern part of the island and to provide an active
children’s ministry program each evening.
We totally experienced firsthand the words found
in Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than receive.”
Oh, the warmth and kindness and music and
generosity of the Tongans! Words are inadequate to
try to capture the overwhelming spirit of Jesus that
we felt there.
Despite their poverty, the Tongan
people were incredibly warm and
welcoming to our mission team of
young people.

the youth from this church live?” said one of our
team members.
That evening, some of our mission team
members suggested that we take up a special love
offering for this struggling church group to help
them fill some swampland with gravel and rock.
This land had been donated to them by the
government and it’s where they want to build a
permanent church. But they simply couldn’t afford
the gravel and rock fill to prepare the land.
Praise the Lord, we collected enough money to
be able to purchase more than 60 dump truck loads of
rock and gravel! Two days later, the dump trucks and
grader completed the job of filling the swampland.
Now they can begin constructing their new church
on this land. As you can imagine, this little church
group was overwhelmed with joy and appreciation!
The night before we left Tonga, the youth group
from the Popua church came to say farewell to us.
With tears in their eyes they sang beautiful songs for
us and brought some amazing hand-made gifts—
woven baskets, fans and carvings.
Here’s how Justin, a mission team member from
Canada, described this life changing moment:
“I will never forget the words of the pastor as
he stood to thank us: ‘As you know, our church is
located in one of the poorest villages. We had no idea
that you would choose our church to spend Sabbath
with my people. We cannot express how much we
appreciate what you have given to us. These gifts are
QHM mission team members worshipping with the
locals at the Popua Seventh-day Adventist Church.
only a small token. We don’t have much, but we give
it with all our heart.’
“And as we sat with tears in our eyes, it was
brought home to me that these poor people are far
richer than many of us in North America. They are
rich because they have the Lord. As I write this I ask
myself, ‘Have I been making the trip and missing the
journey?’ I hope not.
“Let us store up treasures in heaven, through the
friends and the love that we share on Earth.”
Isn’t it wonderful to see the true meaning of life
“click” in someone?
The impact of our life-changing experience
in Tonga will only fully be known in heaven. But
already an important impact has been made in the
lives of our mission team members. They now know
how to live for each other and that people are far
more important than possessions.
For many of us, including me, it takes nearly a
lifetime to learn that truth. If I take the time to slow
down a little, to focus on people like Jesus did, then and
only then will I experience the joy of the journey! 

Buffalo Baptism
Winning souls in India
by Marvin Moore
The little old man
put his arms around me,
rested his head on my
chest and cried and cried.
It was one of the most
touching moments of our
outreach in India.
It happened in a village near
Srikakulam. A city of more than
2.6 million people, Srikakulam is
about 25 kilometers west of the
Bay of Bengal. My wife Lois and
I together with a friend, Marilyn
Justesen, traveled there earlier
this year to conduct a two-week
evangelistic series.
While we stayed in the city,
the meetings were held in a nearby
village. Each evening a taxi took
us to the meeting site about a half
hour’s drive out of town. However,
people from a total of 10 villages
were attending the meetings. So
every night they would arrive
riding in the backs of small trucks.
The meetings always began
with singing. And oh, how the
Indian people can sing! They love
to clap their hands to the rhythm of
the music. The volume on the loud
speakers was turned up so much I
think everyone in the village could
hear them.
And there was often a drum
or two to accompany the singing.
In fact, nearly every Adventist
church in India has drums and
tambourines. It’s usually the only
ECHOES
Echoes Fall 2012.indd 18
FALL 2012 Some 206 people were baptized during the evangelistic meetings in India.

form of musical accompaniment
these poor people can afford.
Each evening Lois and Marilyn
led the children in singing simple
choruses with hand movements.
They also told children’s stories
and gave health talks. I gave the
message in the main meeting.
My translator was the conference
president, Pastor Jesurathnam.
At the close of each meeting
the people crowded around us so
we could place our hands on their
heads and pray for them. And on
the closing night the people blessed
us with a special sign of affection,
placing garlands of flowers around
our necks. In fact, they gave us so
many that we could hardly stand
up! It’s amazing how heavy flowers
can be!
18
Seeing people baptized is
always the most exciting part of an
evangelism mission trip. Starting in
the first week we began attending
baptisms during the morning, some
as early as 8 a.m. so the people
could then go to work in the fields.
The rest of our day would then be
spent visiting the villages before the
evening meeting.
Because some local groups
have strong religious prejudices,
our previous evangelism trips to
India didn’t include attending
the baptisms. It was feared that
baptisms out in the open—in
rivers, canals and reservoirs—
could place us in danger.
But this time local church
leaders saw no problem with our
presence at baptisms and we were
www.qhministries.org | www.facebook.com/qhministries

India Evangelism Repor t
able to attend nearly every one! That
was a huge blessing to be a part of.
We praise the Lord that by
the time our series was over, 206
precious people had accepted Jesus
and been baptized!
One morning when we arrived
at the baptismal site we saw a man
standing in the reservoir bathing
two water buffalos. He scrubbed
their backs and sides and even
washed their tails.
A little buffalo bathing didn’t
delay the baptism however. The
pastor performing the baptisms
just walked into the water by the
buffalos and proceeded to baptize
the people one at a time as the
animals and their owner looked
on! That was certainly the most
unique baptism we’d ever seen!
Sacrifice for evangelism
Many Adventist mission teams
travel to India each year to win souls
through evangelism. Each team
raises the money to cover the cost
of their own air travel as well as for
transportation and accommodations
while in the country.
We also helped provide for
the tent at our meeting site and
the transportation costs to bring
villagers to the meetings.
In addition, two Bible workers
are assigned to each village. They
arrive in the villages several weeks
prior to the meetings. They visit
in the homes of the people, begin
introducing them to Christianity
and during the series they
accompany interested people to the
meetings each night.
After the meetings are over,
one Bible worker is assigned to
two or three churches where they
will continue to ground the new
believers in their faith and carry on
From left, Marilyn Justesen and Marvin and Lois Moore with the generous
wreaths of flowers given them by the local people.
outreach in the villages for three or
more years!
The Southern Asia Division
works to build a church in each
village that is reached through
evangelism. The cost per church
building, including the land on
which it is constructed, is $5,000.
So for 10 villages, the combined
cost of the churches in our villages
was $50,000.
Add all this up and you can see
the tremendous sacrifice required
to effectively win souls through
evangelism. But it is indeed a small
price when compared with the
infinite value of the people saved for
eternity! Praise God we can be so
privileged to be part of His work.
I must express our deep
gratitude to Quiet Hour Ministries
and you, their generous supporter,
for providing the funds to build 10
churches before our meetings. Let
me explain what an impact these
churches will have.
The church buildings in the
villages give Adventism a visible
presence and a place for the new
believers to worship. They greatly
(800)900-9021 | www.twitter.com/qhministries Echoes Fall 2012.indd 19
19
help in keeping new believers
within the faith.
Plus a huge number of the
people baptized are Hindus.
Most of these people are from
the lowest class called Dalits, or
the “untouchables.” They are not
allowed to enter a Hindu temple.
Thus, it is a major blessing for
these new believers to be welcomed
warmly into a Christian church!
You can imagine how
important these new churches are.
As recently as 50 years ago
this type of global outreach simply
wasn’t possible. But today you and
I are blessed to be international
evangelists, helping spread the three
angels’ messages around the world.
Speaking for our team, we
are so grateful to have had this
opportunity to proclaim our
Savior’s love. And we are grateful
to you for providing churches for
the precious new believers in India.
You are making a true difference as
the gospel moves ever forward! 

Dominican Republican Evangelism Repor t
The Decision
by Steve Hamstra
of a Lifetime
A report on our Dominican Republic evangelistic meetings.
Edgar straightened up in his seat, his heart racing. Yet a smile was
breaking across his face. He was at a Quiet Hour Ministries evangelistic meeting in San
Juan, Dominican Republic and the young preacher was making an appeal to accept Christ.
Edgar had been coming
to the meetings for some
time. And he was deeply
convicted by the messages
of God’s saving grace. Now,
as the appeal was being
made, he felt in his heart
God calling him to make the
decision of a lifetime.
Nervous but filled with
joy, Edgar stood up and
made his way to the front.
Later that night, Edgar
told Jonathan, our mission team
member who led the meetings,
that God had especially drawn him
to the meetings.
This past June, a group of 18
Quiet Hour Ministries mission
team members held evangelistic
meetings across the city of
San Juan. A total of 84 people,
including Edgar, accepted Jesus
and were baptized.
The Lord richly blessed our
outreach in San Juan. More than
2,200 people were reached through
the meetings!
At one site, a young lady was
baptized during the very first
meeting. She had been in Bible
studies with the local pastor after
having a dream about Jesus. And
when the first appeal was made,
she was excited to take a public
stand for Christ.

Opportunity!
This is Your
Herb* is excited as he sees the gospel
being shared around the world. He’s
told us how much he appreciates the
work of Quiet Hour Ministries.
B
ecause of his strong belief in worldwide outreach,
Herb has created several Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs)
with Quiet Hour Ministries.
When the market turned sour a few years ago, Herb lost a
large amount of money. He’d been thinking of using that
money to fund another CGA, thereby creating a secure
income and providing for future mission work.
Unfortunately that opportunity is now lost and the
money cannot benefit him or the ministry. If his
investments recover, he says, “I would not put it off
this time!”
A CGA with Quiet Hour Ministries can provide a secure
lifetime income for you. Significant tax benefits
for 2012 are possible as well. So act now to
take advantage of this year-end opportunity!
There are many CGA options so call us
today to learn more!
