form shirts cannot be altered in any way. If a student's top is not a uniform shirt,

Please do not drop your child off at school before 7:00 am. There is no adult supervision before this
time.

and Fridays, and no later than 1:00 pm on Wednesdays. After these periods, there is no adult supervision for the students. The A+ program is available for after school care for a nominal cost.

OBLIGATIONS
Please be sure to take care of any obligations your child may have before the last day of school.
These include paying off lunch loans, returning (or paying for) library books and other school materials and supplies.
TRANSFERRING OR LEAVING SCHOOL
If your child will be transferring
to another school next year, please notify the office as soon as
possible. We will need to know the student's new address and the name of the new school or district. Please give our staff one week to prepare the proper documents.
A student leaving during the last four weeks of school will be given a report card with
grades for the school year and an indication as to promotion or non-promotion based on
his/her achievement and effort up to his/her date of release. Count the last week as a
full week, even though it may not be a full five days for pupils.
A student leaving during the fifth and sixth weeks before school closes will be given a
report card with grades up to time of departure, with a recommendation as to promotion
or non-promotion based on a stated estimate of anticipated final grades.
A student leaving school prior to the sixth week before school closes will be released
through normal procedure, except that a report card a progress report will not be given
at the time of departure.
School records will be forwarded later upon request of the reoceiving school. It is assumed that the student will enroll in a new school in time for that
school to determine the final grades. If the student does not enroll in a new school before the end of the school year, it will be up to the receiving school the following year to
determine promotion or non-promotion for work done in the previous school year.
REPORT CARDS
Report cards are issued at the end of each quarter. If a student has an outstanding financial obligation (lost book, lunch loan, bus loan, etc.) Makalapa will hold the report card in the office until
the obligation is settled.
LOST AND FOUND
If your child has lost something please have him/her check the Lost and Found bin in the office.
After the school year ends any items left in the bin will be donated to a charitable organization.

MAKALAPA MULTICULTURAL CELEBRATION
"A Rainbow of Cultures"
On May 28, 2009, Makalapa Elementary will be hosting a Multicultural Celebration at
Radford High School, starting at 9:00 am and ending at 10:30 am. The students are eager
to share what they have learned about different cultures, as well as demonstrate their fine
arts talents for their families and friends to see. In addition to grade level performances,
our select chorus, beginning band, 4th grade strings, and 3rd grade ukulele groups will be
showcasing what they have learned this school year. Because the entire school will be in
attendance, seating is limited to the areas located on the map on the back of this sheet.
Mter our performance, families are invited to participate in our first ever Family Picnic
Day, a time for families to get together on our campus to enjoy lunch with one another.
Everyone is encouraged to bring personal items such as blankets or chairs to make your
picnic more enjoyable. Parents can sign out their child(ren) from their homeroom
teacher(s) to have a picnic within designated areas on our campus during their child's 30
minute lunch period.

As a School Community Council member, you can help your council discover new and exciting ways
to contribute to the education of students in your school. Education is a partnership involving
parents, students, teacher, principals, state board, business, and the community. Your involvement in the council gives you the opportunity to strengthen that partnership.
School Community Councils playa vital role in the education system in Hawaii. In 2004, the Hawaii
State Legislature took significant steps to ensure that school community members would have
greater influence in public education through School Community Councils. Legislation confirmed
the advisory role of School Community Councils to improve student achievement and enhance the
accountability of the education system to the public.
If you would be interested in joining the School Community Councilor in nominating someone
WITH THEIR PERMISSION, fill in the blanks at the bottom of this page and send it to Shirlee
Maluo at the school. All nominations must be in by May 6th• Ballots will be issued to all parents
within the third week in May. All nominees will be confirmed by phone before their nameappears
on the ballot.

Thank you to all who supported our PTA fundraiser. We did extremely well considering the low enrollment we currently have. With all your help we were able to raise enough $$$ to purchase 3 SmartBoards for our students. Again, we appreciate all your help in raising this money. We hope you, your
family/friends enjoy the goodies.
Our two Top-Selling students will receive a $50.00 savings bond. From K-2, Kendrick Tokuda in Mrs
Nomura's class, who sold 59 tickets. From 3-6 we have Devin Soogrim in Mrs Yoneda's class with 81
tickets sold. These families deserve a round of applause for going above and beyond. We will have a
drawing for a $30.00 cash prize for all the students who sold 20 or more tickets in the coming week.
This week we had the famous and well anticipated Wheel Spin for all the children whose families sold
tickets. They all enjoyed the event and loved the items they chose. We need to thank Miki Crisp for the
tireless efforts and dedication to the children of this great school. She is the one that makes all this
possible. Thank you Miki.
For the 2009-10 school year, the PTA needs an Executive Board. Currently we are working without a
President or Vice President, the other positions will become vacant as soon as school is over. We need
a few interested parents to join the organization. It's only a few hours of your precious time a month. It
is well worth the cause, this is for all the students that attend Makalapa. Parents are an integral part of
each child's education, and we need your help. A flyer will be going out in the coming week, with a ballot and all the information regarding the PTA. Please take a minute of your time and consider running
for one of the positions.

I). A Dental Hygenist is scheduled to come the week of May I lth for grades K-3 to do presentations on Oral
Hygiene. The intent is to foster in the children a sound oral hygiene base for a lifetime of dental health benefits.
Flouride treatments will be offered to 2nd & 3rd grades only from May 18-22. Permission forms will be passed
out to families and will need to be turned in by May 18th. Students will not be given fluoride treatments without
parent consent.
2) MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION:
Please renew your child's medications for the new school year, and
turn in the form from your physician as soon as possible, but at least before the school year begins. Please turn the

3) MEDICATIONS: Medication must be pick up by a parent or guardian on the last day ofthe school year (June
8,2009) from the Health Room. We cannot hold medications over the summer period, and if any medications are
left over, they will be thrown out after June 9th. If parents cannot pick up the medication on this date, please
make prior arrangements with the office or Health Room before June 9th.
The Native Hawaiian Summer School Assistance Program is a collaboration between Kamehameha
Schools and ALU LIKE, Inc. It is a tuition assistance program for approximately 1000 students in
grades kindergarten.through 12, attending a summer school at a public school. Documented financial need is a requirement. There will be a preference given to students of Hawaiian ancestry.
Application deadline is June 30, 2009.

Operation Purple camps offer military dependents an amazing week of outdoor adventure camp
with other military children. These camps were developed by the National Military Family Association (NMFA), and aim to help military kids experience a carefree week of fun, while also learning coping skills to deal with war-related stress. Youth who attend Operation Purple camps have
the opportunity to foster relationships with other military children in similar circumstances, and
most of all have fun!

Hawaii Pacific University's Community Outreach Department is offering summer
classes in Honolulu, Pearl City, Kaneohe, and On Campus for students ages 4
through 11th grade. They will be working on phonics, comprehension, vocabulary,
study skills, and speed reading. The ultimate goal is to instill a love of reading.
