Facts
Hogs to the NFL
One of the more legendary college football
programs of all time is run by the University
of Arkansas. The school has sent over 190
players into the NFL and many of these former Arkansas Razorbacks football players
have gone on to become legends in the game.
Here is a look at some interesting facts regarding players that played college football
at the University of Arkansas and then went
on to have an NFL career.
-No University of Arkansas football player
has gone on to score more touchdowns in the
NFL than Lance Alworth who accumulated
87 during his career.

-With eight NFL Pro Bowls on his resume,
defensive back Steve Atwater holds the record
for most Pro Bowl appearances by a former
Arkansas Razorbacks football player. This is
one more Pro Bowl appearance than Hall of
Famer Lance Alworth.
-The highest any Arkansas Razorback player
has ever been taken in the NFL Draft is the
second pick of the first round. This happened
in 1954 when the Chicago Cardinals used
their first round pick to take quarterback
Lamar McHan. He would go on to lead the
league in interceptions his first year in the
NFL.

-Quarterback Joe Ferguson appeared in 186
games during his NFL career, this is more
NFL games than any other Arkansas football
player ever played in. Ferguson also played
more seasons in the NFL than any other Arkansas football player with 17 years of NFL
service.
-The two heaviest players ever drafted out of
the University of Arkansas were oddly
enough both taken by the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2000 they picked guard Bobbie Williams and in 2004 they chose offensive lineman Shawn Andrews, both players weighed
340 pounds at the time they were drafted.
-In 1984, the New York Jets drafted defensive lineman Ron Faurot in the first round of
the NFL Draft, he is the tallest Arkansas
player to ever be drafted into the NFL.
-The first Arkansas football player to ever be
drafted into the NFL was tailback Jack Robbins, chosen by the Chicago Cardinals with
the fifth pick of the 1938 NFL Draft.

Slow Cooker BBQ Ribs
Ingredients

4 pounds pork baby back ribs
salt and pepper to taste
2 cups ketchup
1 cup chili sauce
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
4 tablespoons vinegar
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 dash hot sauce

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F
Season ribs with salt and pepper. Place in
a shallow baking pan. Brown in oven 15
minutes. Turn over, and brown another 15
minutes; drain fat.

Maybe you’ve just moved, or you’ve brought home a
new baby. Out of the blue, your usually energetic
pooch is withdrawn. Could your dog be depressed?
Yes, say experts. And, depression in dogs isn’t so
different from depression in people.
Dog depression symptoms are very similar to those
in people, said John Ciribassi, DVM, past president
of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. “Dogs will become withdrawn. They become
inactive. Their eating and sleeping habits often
change. They don’t participate in the things they
once enjoyed.”
Dr. Bonnie Beaver, DVM, said major changes in a
dog’s life could lead to periods of depression. Those
include moving into a new home, a new spouse or
baby in the household, or adding another pet. Even
a change in the dog’s schedule, for instance a stayat-home owner who takes a job, can cause a dog to
get down.
But the two most common triggers of severe dog depression are
the loss of a companion animal
or the loss of an owner. And be
careful the dog isn’t simply responding to the reactions of
other people in the home.

In a medium bowl, mix together the ketchup,
chili sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, oregano,
Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and salt
and pepper. Place ribs in slow cooker. Pour
sauce over ribs, and turn to coat.
Cover, and cook on Low 6 to 8 hours, or until
ribs are tender.
Dogs pick up on our emotions, so if the owner has
died, the dog could be responding to the grief of
others,” Beaver said. “Or the dog may not be getting the attention he’s accustomed to, which is
stressing him out.
Most dogs bounce back from depression within a
few days to a few months with just a little extra
TLC, said Ciribassi. “Keep them engaged, do more
of the things they like to do, get them a little more
exercise and they should be fine,” he said.
And reward them when they show signs of happiness, Beaver said. “If the only thing that still gets
a little tail wag out of your dog is a car ride, then
take him for a series of short rides each day, praising and rewarding him when he appears happier,”
Beaver said.
And be careful not to encourage the negative behavior by lavishing a depressed dog with attention
and treats while he is moping, Beaver said. The
dog will think you’re rewarding him for that behavior.
Sometimes, if the dog is depressed because of the
loss of a companion, getting another pet can help,
said Ciribassi. But it has to be done carefully with
both the family’s and the dog’s needs taken into
account, he said.

Halloween Safety
A few safety tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission can protect children who plan to
go trick-or-treating this Halloween.
Flame Resistant Costumes: When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label
Flame Resistant. Costume Designs: Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be
clearly visible to motorists.

For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that
will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with
reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores.

To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights.
Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling.
Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes. Mother's high heels are not a good idea for safe
walking.
Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loose-fitting mask that might restrict
breathing or obscure vision. If a mask is used, however, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large
enough to allow full vision.
Pedestrian Safety: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible
child. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather
than walk in the street. Children should be cautioned against running out from between parked cars, or
across lawns and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers.
Choosing Safe Houses: Children should go only to homes where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome.
People expecting trick-or-treaters should remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps
and porches. Candlelit jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame. Indoor jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from curtains, decorations, and other furnishings that could be ignited.

There were many fads in the 1970's. Pet rocks were big in the 1970's.
They would come in little boxes with little piece of straw in the bottom of
the box.
Platform shoes were also very large in the 70's. People would wear them
mostly to parties, but others would wear them everywhere. Jogging suits were also a big trend in
fashion.
Later, people started to worry about their weight. For some reason, jogging became a popular sport, so jogging
suits became popular not just for running and working out, but for fashion too.
"Earth Day" was also a popular fad in the 70’s. This was celebrated on April 22. Earth Day was a day when
people did such things as wear gas masks to demonstrate their concern about pollution and the wish they had for a
cleaner Earth.
