First and foremost, Robby and I would like to take this
opportunity to personally THANK EVERYONE for
participating in the Annual Scott Medlock/Robby
Krieger Concert and Golf Classic. This year, the focus
will be on education. Money raised will be used mainly
to finance scholarships for deserving vets and their
families through the Pat Tillman Foundation.
Pat’s extraordinary life, as a husband, professional
football player, scholar, and soldier, serves as a role
model for all of us. It is has been an honor and
privilege to be a part of the Tillman’s life and we
would like to extend an opportunity for you to
join us in a very exclusive concert and golf event. All proceeds
from the Benefit will go to support the Pat Tillman Foundation. Since the
program launched in 2009, 112 Scholars have received over $1.3 million in scholarships. The
Tillman Military Scholars program funds scholarships to veterans, active servicemembers and
their dependents, especially those who have been impacted by the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Currently, Tillman Military Scholars represent nearly every branch of the armed forces: Army,
Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, National Guard and Reserves. The enclosed information outlines
how you can be a part of this very special event. We would like to personally thank you for your

Organization Overview
In 2002, Pat Tillman selflessly put his successful NFL career with
the Arizona Cardinals on hold to serve his country. The Pat Tillman
Foundation was created by his family and friends in 2004, following his
death while serving with the 75th Ranger Regiment in Afghanistan.
Upon inception the Pat Tillman Foundation committed $1.25 million
to Arizona State University, Pat’s alma mater, to create and endow the
Tillman Scholars ASU program. The leadership program at the W. P.
Carey School of Business celebrates Pat’s legacy and serves as a lasting
tribute to his extraordinary academic and athletic accomplishments at
ASU, both in the classroom and on the football field.
In the fall of 2008, with the ASU endowment complete, the Pat
Tillman Foundation refined its mission and focus towards veterans
and military families with the creation of the Tillman Military Scholars program. With
over two million individuals having served since September 11, 2001 and over 300,000 troops returning
to school or work annually, there is an increasing demand on the limited amount of educational resources
available to military families.
Understanding the challenges experienced by military families and the increased need for resources,
the board of directors led by Marie Tillman, Pat’s wife, redefined the mission of the Pat Tillman Foundation:
to invest in veterans and their families through education, community and advocacy.
The Pat Tillman Foundation recognizes the demands of pursuing an education after a career in the
military and the challenges that come with the decision to do so. More than two million service members
and their dependents are eligible for educational benefits under the new Post-9/11 GI Bill. However, this
funding is partial at best and military families often face many other barriers to pursuing their educational
goals.
The Tillman Military Scholars program removes these barriers by providing scholarships to cover not
only direct expenses such as tuition, fees and books, but also other needs like housing and child care.
Tillman Military Scholars represent all levels of higher education, from undergraduates to PhD
candidates, every region of the country, and every race, gender and socio-economic background. To date,
the Pat Tillman Foundation has pledged over $1.3 million in scholarship funds to 111 Tillman Military
Scholars attending 46 universities in 28 states. For the 2009 and 2010 academic years, Tillman Military
Scholars have received over $875,000 in scholarship awards.
Several of the scholarship award winners were selected in coordination with our eight university
partners: Mississippi State University, University of Arkansas, University of Idaho, University of Maryland,
Cleveland State University, Texas A&M University, University of Arizona and University of Oregon. Each
of these institutions has existing military support programs on campus and has made compelling efforts to
support those students who have served.
Inaugural Tillman Military Scholar Richard Garcia is a prime example of the extraordinary potential
and desire our Scholars have to make an impact and difference in the world around them. Richard grew
up in public housing in East Los Angeles. The son of two deaf parents living on welfare, Richard found
an early oasis in the L.A. Police Academy magnet program, which eventually led him to the U.S. Marine
Corps. After two deployments to the Middle East, Richard returned with a passionate desire to continue his
education, but without the means to do so. PTF helped Richard pursue his goals clear across the country
to the University of Maryland. Richard recently completed his Bachelor’s degree, and is now pursuing his
Master’s in Hearing & Speech in Washington D.C. With his new skills he plans to return to East Los Angeles
to eradicate inequalities faced by the deaf community.
By weaving together the story of Pat Tillman with those selected to carry on his legacy through the
Tillman Military Scholars program, we tell the story of the power, possibility and devotion of every veteran
and military family member.

Tillman Military Scholars
The Pat Tillman Foundation understands the demands of pursuing
an education after a career in the military and the challenges that come
with the decision to do so. Nearly two million servicemembers and their
dependents are eligible for educational benefits under the new Post-9/11
GI Bill. However, even with this, military servicemembers and their
families face barriers to pursuing their educational goals. The Tillman
Military Scholars program covers not only direct study-related
expenses such as tuition, fees, and books, but also other needs, such
as room and board and child care. In providing this support, the Pat
Tillman Foundation aims to remove any and all barriers to furthering
one’s education.
To date, the Pat Tillman Foundation has awarded
111 Tillman Military Scholars $1,358,500 in pledged
scholarship support to complete their education.
These deserving scholars are pursuing degrees at every level from undergraduate to PhD and represent
46 universities across 28 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Georgia, Idaho,
Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York,
Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington
and Washington, D.C.
In 2009, the Pat Tillman Foundation awarded $649,500 of pledged scholarship support to 52 members
of the inaugural class of Tillman Military Scholars. In total, approximately 500 applications were received
for this prestigious honor. Of the 52 scholarship award winners, several were selected in coordination with
four university partners: Mississippi State University, University of Arkansas, University of Idaho, and
University of Maryland. Each of these institutions has existing military support programs and has made
compelling efforts to support those who have served. By pairing scholarships with specific servicemember
services, we are creating an environment for greater success.
In 2010 four new university partners were added to the Tillman Military Scholar program: University of
Oregon, University of Arizona, Texas A&M University and Cleveland State University. In June the second
class of Tillman Military Scholars were selected from a pool of over 1500 applicants. The new class of 59
Tillman Military Scholars received $709,000 of pledged scholarship support to complete their education.
The Tillman Military Scholars program is open to any current or former member of the U.S. Armed
Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserve), or a dependent
(spouse or children), who is pursuing any level of post-secondary education and whose financial need is
not met.
Beyond financial need, the Pat Tillman Foundation searches for applicants who display a record of
service and demonstrate a desire to continue that service through their career. The purpose of these
scholarships is to not only fill the financial gap many face to completing their education but also connect
the experience of their military service or the lessons learned from a family member’s military service to a
lifelong commitment to service.
Applications are available through the Pat Tillman Foundation website each spring for the following
academic year. Scholarship amounts are determined on a case-by-case basis.
