LAKE UPDATES
During the month May, Island Shores lakes received treatment for pondweed, if left untreated it will
grown to the surface of the lake and large mats of algae will grown on top of it. We used the Sonar
Method, which is a systemic herbicide that will only have to be applied once per year to control the
bushy pondweed.
Lastly, the inoperable fountain located within Willow Ranch will have a new motor installed by the
beginning of the month.

GATE UPDATE AND TOP GUN SECURITY
PHONE NUMBERS
Dear Homeowner:
Customer privacy and security have never been more important. We want
to give you an update on the gates and cameras and after-hours phone
numbers to Top Gun Security.
Currently we have over 120 cameras up and running. We fixed the cameras
first to determine who was responsible for damaging the gates by pushing
them open with their vehicles. Any vehicle caught on camera damaging the
gates will be responsible for all damages to the gate and gate opener.
We are in the process of replacing all old hydraulic gate openers with new
mechanical gate openers. The new mechanical gate openers are stronger,
more reliable and are able to handle the weight of the gate. The target date
is to have every gate completed by July 31, 2015.
We are also installing new call boxes at the same time as we are putting
in the new mechanical gate openers. You may see some street boring or
cutting of the concrete to lay new lines for the system.

PARKING IN THE STREETS

a warning notice, fines start at $50 and go up to $100 per violation, every
11 days it is reported. Also, in the gated sections of the community, the POA
has the right to tow the vehicle at the vehicle owner’s expense. If you have
extenuating circumstances and need to park on the street, please send a
written detailed request to the Mike Graves. This will be reviewed by the
Board at the next available Board Meeting.
Parking is only allowed in the street during daylight hours only when the
driveway can hold no additional vehicles. This includes, but not limited
to; residents, guests/visitors, caregivers, home health care providers and

Take responsibility for yourself & be a good neighbor! Keep our streets &

If each person did their own part (around the outside of their home, including
their little stretch of street in front of their house), what a better place this

Shrubs
• Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now for next
season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch well with oak
leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic.
Pastor Glenn & Bettie, 17010 Feather Fall Lane, Willow Ranch Subdivision
at Canyon Lakes, Houston Texas 77095. For more information, please call
Pastor Glenn at 713-826-3364 or 281-304-6966 or email: at gbdavis@
amerion.com.
Benefits of Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material
on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by
reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind
and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend
to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of
mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns
• Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun.
Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80
degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part of the
lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
Flowers
• Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of
the beautiful foliage.
• Plants to set: Acalpha, Ageratum, Alternathera, Aspidistra, Artemisia,
Balsam, Begonia, Chrysanthemum, Cockscomb, Coleus, Croton, Dusty
Miller, Feverfew, Gaillardia, Geranium, Marigold, Petunia, Pinks, Portulaca,
Salvia-red, Shrimp Plant, Torenia, Verbena and Vinca.
Vegetables
• A strong blast of water in the morning rids plants of most bugs for the rest
of the day.
• Vegetables to plant: Cantaloupe, Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant sets,
Okra, Black Peas, Pepper Sets, Summer Squash and Sweet Potato.

enjoyed delicious treats, cold milk and delightful stories. Current and future
Warriors loved seeing the teachers and the elementary principal dressed as
characters from some of their favorite books. Elementary Principal Robert

Cow Loves Cookies” by Karma Wilson; Kindergarten teacher Caroline Young
dressed as “Pete the Cat” in the book “Pete The Cat: Rocking in My School

HAPPY 37TH BIRTHDAY, CYPRESS
CHRISTIAN SCHOOL!
On April 10, 2015, CCS turned 37.
Current Admissions Director Angie
Ramirez and former Admissions
Director Vicki Moore celebrated
with some delicious treats from the
wonderful ladies in the secondary
kitchen. To add to the fun, students
enjoyed playing “Name That Tune”
with music from 1978 when the school
opened. From 18 middle school
students in 1978 to approximately 680
students in grades K-12 in 2015, the
school has definitely grown. CCS is thankful for the men and women who had
the vision to start our school and those who have invested in the school over
the last 37 years. Cypress Christian is committed to continuing the tradition
of investing in young lives, positively impacting culture and advancing God’s
Kingdom. For more historical facts and pictures, visit the CCS history page
on the school website at www.CypressChristian.org.
CCS MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE PRESENTS “GOLLY GEE WHIZ”
Audience members raved about the talent that the CCS middle school drama
students displayed in the adorable and entertaining performance of “Golly
Gee Whiz.” The musical is a loving tribute to the terrific Mickey Rooney and
Judy Garland Hollywood film musicals of the 1930s and 40s that portrays the
“can do” attitude of the younger generation.

The free event kicked off in the front parking lot of the Berry Center with
carnival amusements, games, bounce houses, a climbing wall, a juggler,
unicyclist, stilt walker and a horse-and-buggy ride. More than 60 vendor
booths lined the center of the carnival. Local country-western band Sawdust

SAN JACINTO COUNCIL
Copper Creek Meadows Community finished up the year with a bridging
ceremony for those troops moving on to the next level of Girl Scouting. Troop
Leaders introduced their troops and told us about the year’s activities. The

evening.
Troops from Copper Creek Meadows donated 19 assorted cases of Girl

EAGLE PROJECT FOR
MIGUEL CASANOVA
On March 28, 2015, Eagle scout candidate Miguel Casanova carried out his
Eagle project with the assistance of 26 scouts and adults from Boy Scout
Troop 1296. A long paved walkway was constructued at Mcfee Elementary,
running from the school portable buildings to the nearby street. The walkway
will help improve the pathway from the local neighborhood to Mcfee
Elementary school for both students and the public.
Miguel and Troop 1296 built the pathway with weed block, pavers and sand,
where there was previously a grassy area with poor drainage which was
becoming muddy due to a combination of foot traffic and recent rain. The
resulting pathway is the result of many scouts participating (almost 200
hours combined) in the hard digging in preparation for laying the final pavers
and sand. Congratulations on a job well done!

Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals
while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure

PATRIOTIC WORSHIP & FELLOWSHIP CELEBRATION
On Sunday, June 28th, Cornerstone United Methodist Church will be hosting
a special “Patriotic Worship Event.” In celebration of our nation’s birthday on
July 4th, Steve Hoyle, the Cornerstone Music Director, has put together a
festive musical extravaganza entitled, “Let Freedom Ring.” The program will
include patriot songs and readings, a time of prayer for our nation, a salute to
our Armed Forces and a “message in song” focusing on “Old-time Southern
Gospel” music.
On this Sunday only, rather than the usual three services at 8:30, 9:30 and
10:45 AM (there will also be Christian Education at 9:30 AM), Cornerstone will
have just one “churchwide” service at 10:45 AM. The “Patriotic Celebration”
will be presented at this churchwide 10:45 AM service. An orchestra will
accompany the Cornerstone chancel choir. After the service, there will be
a hot dog luncheon and a time of games and fellowship. Don’t miss this

the costs associated with our family life center. Anyone can help by donating
gently worn, used or new shoes at Cornerstone United Methodist Church
located at 18081 West Road. You can bring your donations by MondayThursday 9 AM-4 PM or contact the church office to schedule a time to pick

her son to law school.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER
REMAINING 2015 SEASON
EXPLORING LIFE, LOVE & LAUGHTER
The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces its 10th mainstage
season, which explores life, love and laughter through timeless musicals,
zany comedies, a classic murder mystery and a Shakespearean comedy.
2015
• Shakespeare - comes to life, June 12th - July 5th with A Midsummer Night’s
Dream. The canon’s most enchanted comedy pursues love with calculated
abandon! This story of mortal and immortal paramours set in a mythical
forest is one that will cast a spell on lovers of all ages.
• 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American
musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are
found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s
nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical
witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will
stir the soul of every American.
All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named
“Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter
Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.

The Drowning Girls, a modern interpretation and poetic retelling of the
“Brides in the Bath” slayings in 20th century England. The work also examines
the lengthy history of misogyny and domestic abuse in modern civilization.
Originally produced in Canada for the Edmonton Fringe Festival, the work
will debut in Houston on July 16, 2015 and will run for 12 performances
through August 1, 2015. In line with MU’s mission to promote and support
the work of women, the play, written by three female playwrights, illustrates
how far women have come in the fight for equality in the past 100 years.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize
volunteering also benefits you as an individual? CAM volunteers often let us
know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the fulfillment
they receive from helping others.
The services provided at CAM, are made possible by many dedicated
volunteers. If you enjoy working with the public, decorating or merchandising,
then serving in CAM’s resale shop, Angels’ Attic, is the place for you. Our
busy community donation area, the Cellar, is looking for people willing to
serve by processing donations and restocking Angels’ Attic. Please plan to
attend a volunteer tour and orientation by calling Tara Rauch 281-955-7683
or email at [email protected].

Occupational Therapy to children with special needs of all ages living in and
around the greater Houston area. Our facility is unique in that we utilize
animals, including horses, dogs, goats, pigs, lambs and rabbits as an integral
part of each child’s therapy treatment plan. Being a non-profit organization,
we are constantly looking for extra help around the farm. Therefore, Special
CHEERS would like to welcome all high school and college-aged students
interested in working with both children and animals to volunteer after
school, on the weekends or seasonally (i.e., summer camp). Please call
our administrative assistant, Ms. Denise Pace, at 713-983-0075, for more
information. A background check will be required of all individuals applying
for a volunteer position at our facility.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION
FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare
for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course
culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish
Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using
computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.
Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with
hands-on community service? Contact [email protected] or see www.
ncjwhouston.org.
