Editorial Column
t is a pleasure for us to draw out this
issue of KBAA Newsletter. It is delayed for
some reasons. At last, we have overcome
the difficulties and finally, it’s a joy for us.
It is published through hard labor and I
believe it’s a platform for the KOICA Alumni
in Bangladesh for information sharing
on diversified issues and will contribute
promoting exchanges of goodwill between
the people of Korea and Bangladesh. It
is our firm belief that KBAA Newsletter will
continue to play a role of glue cementing the
members of KBAA in the years to come.
The Seoul Global Center opened in a ceremony held on June
21, 2013 at its new building in Seoul with the participation of
Mayor Park Won-Soon and some 120 other high-profile guests.
This impressive structure is located at 38 Jong-Ro in JongroGu in Seoul. It represents the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s
commitment “to making Seoul a vibrant and livable city for the
international residents.” The Seoul Global Center is designed to
be “the Comprehensive Support Center for Foreign Residents in
Seoul.”
In this issue writer Mamtaz Begum’s ‘Journey

Kumar Das’s write up on Solar Energy and
Md Rakibul Hasan’s ‘A Korean Spring in my
life’ are much attractive.
Today 1.1 million foreigners live in South Korea, 400,000 of them
residing in Seoul. The Seoul Global Center helps these foreign
residents with everything from business to daily living. Their
facility houses a comprehensive multilingual counseling service,
business support, education programs and much more. Beyond
the new building there are also satellite buildings servicing
many of the cities individual districts. The first speaker at the
opening was Mayor Park who spoke about his excitement for the
growing relationships between Seoul and Foreigners. He said
he was honored to represent the

Seoul Global Centre opened on last June 21,
2013. A pictorial report is enclosed here. We
wonder that at least four million foreigners
live in Seoul alone! This center would provide
the residents from bushiness support to
housing and education to health supports.
We think readers would enjoy this knowledge
sharing report. Finally, we have introduced
newly, Fashion- Korean fashion. We think,
readers will welcome such contributions. It
is a pledge to the members, participants &
visiting fellows to send more contributions
to the Editor regarding their visit to Korea,
which would enrich the upcoming issues.
Finally, I extend my heartiest wishes for
the encouragement made by the Resident

Seoul Global Center and see Seoul’s growth as an
international city. Following Mayor Park’s speech was
a heart-felt address by the Ambassador of Spain Luis
Arias-Romero. The ambassador stated how Spanish
citizens felt, more than ever, at home in Seoul. He was
thankful to the mayor and city for programs like this
one that make Seoul a more open city. Arias-Romero
stated “Spain’s general feeling is always of friendship.
We will now be neighbors in this beautiful and new
building. Please count on our support in creating a
more beautiful Seoul.”
Ms. Amy Jackson, president of the American Chamber
of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea), was the third
speaker at the event. She spoke of the importance of
foreign businesses in Seoul and her first hand experience
with this.
“I live here with my husband and our two sons, so I am
proud to say we are four of the four hundred thousand
foreigners that make up Seoul.” Today foreigners employ
half a million Koreans in Seoul. With programs such
as the Seoul Global Center, that make it comfortable
for Foreigners to work and live in Seoul, this number
is growing. Jackson spoke of the American Business
Committee’s excitement to work more with the Seoul
Government.
After the speeches concluded, a tour of the building
was given to all attendees. Those who did not move
among the floors were able to watch the tour live from
a video screen. Staff kindly greeted the tour group as
they moved throughout the facility. To conclude the tour
the mayor, ambassadors and other foreigners that play
a key part to Seoul’s international success, unveiled
the “Seoul Global Center Logo” sign that sits outside
of the building. Ms. Pilar Perezau was one of the many
attendees at the opening celebration on Friday. She
came to Seoul in 2007 when her husband accepted a
job in the city. She is an active member of SIWA (Seoul
International Women’s Association) and ANZA (Australia
New Zealand Association).
After finding programs that connected her to the expat
community she began to seek ways to learn more about
Seoul. She became a volunteer in the “Daily Living team”
and “Friends from Afar.” Being such an active foreigner
in the Seoul community she recognizes the importance
of the Seoul Global Center and programs such as a
semi-annual town hall meeting for the growth of Seoul as
an international city. She has seen great progress in this
direction during her time her. Ms. Perezau states “I was
delighted to be present at the opening of the new ‘home’
of the Seoul Global Center on June 21. It was indeed an
opportunity to celebrate the success of the Seoul City
initiative that has provided assistance to international
residents and communities in Seoul for the past 12 year.”

EXPERIENCE
JOURNEY WITH AUTISM AN EXPERIENCE IN KOREA
KOREA, KOICA & KOHI these three names become
part of my life and always come from bottom of my
heart now a days .I feel very lucky that Almighty had
given me a chance to complete my International
Fellowship program in Korea, which have wonderful
infrastructure and people.
When the plain started to sign
off to Korea I was thinking
about two completely different
situations respectively. One
of the definite scenario was
what will be the surroundings
over Korea where I got to stay
almost one month and on the
other hand my heart felt about
my first daughter, 10 months
old Munama whom I got to

leave alone in Bangladesh as I
will learn something beneficial
issues like modern treatment, teaching aid and the
communicational tools, this will ultimately make
children of autism of Bangladesh’s life more lenient.
The training program was one of my best parts of my
life since I learned many things from these training that
are impossible to write in words. For the last fourteen
years I have been working for my passionate service
regarding journey with Autism. In Bangladesh in
general autistic children are not getting their deserved
position in the society. Now, we are hopeful that,
autism movements are going on for the betterment of
the autistic children.
After getting Korean Scholarship I felt very fortunate
& responsible at the same time since I could get
something new and productive stuffs which will
eventually help me on autistic children in Bangladesh.
Well I am very grateful to KOHI which give me a
wonderful opportunity to work with some nice Korean
trainers and learn some important issues. In the mean
time, it was my pleasure to work with KOICA as well
which provided me all necessary logistics support on
behalf of KOHI after reaching Korea.
Let me tell about the stuffs that attract my attention.
First of all, their education system is so productive
that a Korean child get to learn about own culture
from three years old by visiting Museum which will
subsequently help them to become a real patriot. Last
but not the least I got to admit that their food variation
is outstanding. A Korean person has always been
shown great hospitality to visitors. At this moment
the whole episodes that I learnt from my one month
staying at Korea help me a lot though implementing
my understanding in my profession to the endeavor
for autistic child of Bangladesh

Spectacular “Solar Energy Technical Training” in Korea
The Energy Technical Training Course on Solar
Powered Irrigation Pump and Solar Home System
held in Korea from April 11-24, 2011-was organized by
KOICA. I was one of the Participants from Bangladesh.
Some of the objectives of the Course were such
as to improve renewable energy development in
Bangladesh, to discuss practical approaches in the
application of Korean Renewable energy strategies,
to train engineers of energy field in preparation for
the maintenance of renewable energy system and
to contribute policies and strategies to meet the
increasing demand of electricity in the context of
energy crisis and diffuse renewable sources of energy.
On the first-day of the course there was an orientation
Program about KOICA’s activities, Korea’s Culture,
Society, Language and daily life of Korean people
etc. We enjoyed this session with enough curiosity.
We learned about the long history of Korean people
how they fought with nature to develop their country.
The historical background shown that they had to
sacrifice more to build a good nation in the world.
Still now there are about 70% mountains prevail in
Korea and they are developing their country fighting
and struggling with this hazardous geography. So it
is worth commenting that they had a good leadership
with congenial political atmosphere. After 40 years
of tremendous development in Korea, now each and
every Korean people believe that “To give is more
blessed than to receive”.
We had some sessions on Overview of new and
renewable energy, Government’s Support Policy,
Energy and Environment, Global Renewable Energy
Trend and Primary Renewable Energy Policy in
Korea in details. There were some workshops in the
training schedule on Distribution Policy of Renewable
Energy in Korea, Concept of PV Power System and
its Application, Technology on PV Module Production,
Solar Thermal Power System and Market Trend,

Solar-wind Hybrid Power System, Solar Pumping
System, Installation of Pumping System and System
Operation and Maintenance etc. The discussion
session covering the schedule was adequate and
meticulous to the topics.
We had some study visits in Korea Institute of Energy
Research (KIER), Zero Energy Solar House (ZeSH),
Gangwon Wind Park, Concentrating Solar Power
System, Landfill Gas (LFG) to Energy Plant, Millinet
Solar Co. Ltd, Seoul City Tour and Photovoltaic
Exhibition Hall etc. During the Study visit we learned
about the total new & renewable energy exists in Korea
and how they have been working to manufacture
different parts or items related with solar system. Lot
of items like PV module, charge controller, battery etc
are being produced in Korea and exported in many
countries in the world. Seoul Tower is one of the famous
& attractive Towers in the world which we visited. We
enjoyed the Tower and it was really memorable for
us. In a practical session we could have been able to
know about Solar Home System in details. We worked
together in group basis and assembled the different
parts of the Solar Home System by our own hand to
be lighted. It was really amazing and interesting to
everybody. During the training course we got maximum
support and co-operation of Mr. JUNG. SIMO, Planning
team/Section chief and Ms Jung in all respects.
In Manikganj PBS, we have a plan to set up 4 (four)
Solar Powered Irrigation Pump out of 20 (twenty) in
Bangladesh through KOICA assistance ship. Initial
works of land selection and lease contract with the
owners have been completed by the guidance of
Renewable Energy Department, REB. Our farmers
and the people of Bangladesh are eagerly waiting to
see this Solar Powered Irrigation Pump which will go
in operation from the next irrigation season scheduled
to be started in January’2012.
We all the participants are pleased and happy to attend
this “Solar Energy Technical
Training” Course under REB
through KOICA project. I
personally believe that this
training will help us to do
something new in Bangladesh.

EXPERIENCE
A Korean Spring in my Life
As a foreign national my first surprise was waiting
there on road when I saw the traffic police saluting the
bus driver that was enough for me to understand the
difference in attitude of a developed and developing
country.. As a student of global village I knew that Korea
is a developed country but the level of development
is amazing. Specially when we were crossing the
Incheon bridge, the sub roads, subways, overpass,
bypass, underpass all the infrastructures are unique
and inimitable. Later I was informed that Incheon city
was almost under sea water but it is Korean special
initiative that made it possible to unearth a city from
sea water and they have done it in another city also.
The roadside scenery was charming as the trees were
in full bloom because of the spring season. Flowers in
the mountain, the beauty of the nature amused me.
Interestingly the day we arrived, Korea launched test
run of Hemu-430X (High speed electric multiple unit)
bullet train. It can carry 465 passengers at a speed
of 370 km/hour. Which will come in to operation in
2015. It will cut one and half hour travel time from
Seoul to Busan. Korea is the fourth nation in the
world after France, Germany and Japan in high speed
train. The very next day Samsung launched another
new product Grapephone Barristor. More importantly,
space satellite Arirang-3 was launched successfully.
Arirang-2 was launched in 2006. Currently USA, Israel
and the European Union have commercial satellites.
Seoul tower, which is open for all from 1980, is over a
mountain and when we were over it I was clearly seeing
the Seoul city divided and also connected between
north-south by Han river. At least 19 bridges over Han
River, interconnecting the city. At the basement of the
tower we saw a very new phenomenon that is love
lock. Our guide (Dana, Kevin & Jenny) mentioned us
that it is Korean & Chiniese
culture. Where couples or
lovers lock keys as they are
locked for love forever, it’s a
promise.
Then we went to have lunch
at Itawon, a posh area of
Seoul city. We had a classical
Korean lunch, off course
kimchi was there. There are
300 types of kimchi which you Md. Rakibul Hasan
may discover if you stay a few
days in Korea. After lunch we
went to watch the coveted Nanta dance, its a korean
traditional dance representing some cook and their
activities through dancing in their kitchen.
After refreshing Nanta we went to the namdeimun
market as we have obligation to buy some souvenuir/
gift for our colleagues and dear-ones. Seoul is one of
the densely populated city in the world as It is second
after Paris. Here lives 1790 people/square km and it is
very expensive too. You have to be 1000 counters for
marketing in Korea. It was also a new experience as
Bangladeshi as prices are always in thousands wonthe Korean currency.
Returning from Seoul to ICC we have to take a little
bit switch road to avoid on road labor demo but that
makes the trip more enjoyable as when we saw
beside the Han river there is long walk way/ park for
children’s amusement where they are cycling, men are
exercising. I took a long breath that in our country we
have a lots of river almost one in every city but there is
no walkways or park like that but I release the breath
hoping that one day we can implement the Korean
river management system in
our country too.
After three hours of journey
from ICC- KOICA center to
Gumi we reached Kyoyoung
University the sight seeing was
amazing but as a Bangladeshi
we were mostly surprised with
the level of communication
system of Korea. We saw
three ways, that are highways,
national ways and county ways.
As a matter of fact Korean
administrative system follows
from 1) Central government 2)
Provincial govt, 3) City govt and
4) County govt. The average

speed of the bus was almost 110 to 115 but we did not
face any jerking there, this is a dream for us because
it is very hard to control at that speed in our road. At
the university campus we started our residing in the
global hall, which is for only
international students or
trainees. If we talk about
our training program it was
nicely divided into classroom
lecture and field visit.
Actually we had 9 classroom
lecture’s, 3 workshops, 5
Group discussion along with
some study tour. We have
visited 1) Munseng village in
Pohang, 2) POSCO-world’s
largest steel company, 3)
Yangdong Village( a Unesco
Heritage site) 4) Gyengju
tour 5) Daego agricultural
and
marine
products
wholesale market 6) Seomun market, Dongseongno
7) Seongjudam, Great king sejong taesil 8) Yoondong
green rural Experience village 9) Mushroom cultivation
farm 10) Corn processing factory 11) Gumi weir as a
part of our study tour. In the end we have to present
an action plan- that was the ultimate reflection of our
scheduled training program.
Korea has a long history of 5000 years, unfortunately
within that period they were 1000 times invaded. In
1945 Korea become independent from Japan but
in 1950 they faced a war. So up to 1960 Korea was
poor country with mere 2$ per capita. But they have
done paly paly (quickly) as within two decade Korea
has become donor country from aid recipient country.
Korea just took 32 years to reach this position, as
others country like England took 2000 years, USA took
1000 years. This miracle was only possible with the
successful introduction of Sae-maul (new)-Undong
(boom) in 1960. The successful leadership of former
president Park Chung, dedicated civil servant and with
the help of political support, local government and
villagers support it has become one of development
model of civilization. Many Korean people donated their
land, ladies donated their ornaments for the successful
venture of Saemaul Undong.
The Guidance and service of
Saemaul leaders, rice saving
pot, observing cleanliness
day and most importantly
government 300 bag cement
subsidy for each village are
the important components
of Saemaul Undong. Two
important outcome of this
movement was Infrastructure
development and agricultural
productivity that created
many job for the Korean
people. In this developing
journey
has
become
continuous process in Korea. The 1988 Olympic
games has taught them orderliness, cleanliness and
politeness. when they observed their 50 years of
independence they have buried their some usage and
belonging to unearth it in the celebration of 100 years
for their interconnection with the future generation.
Today Korean people are like to be introduced as
fascinating people of dynamic Korea. Peaceful and
beautiful nature and super communication system
shows the dynamism in itself. The hospitality of the
Korean people is beyond of my imagination. 19 days
of our life is not too long or too short to visit a country
and to say something about its culture. But one thing
we must agree that Korea is a model-developed
country in all perspective to follow for the country likes
Bangladesh. Being a Saemaul graduate I can assure
one thing that I love Korean attitude of working and I
will try to replicate that in my future work. Thus I hope
that Saemaul Undong is not very far in our country

EXPO
EXPO
EXPO is the abbreviation for International Exposition.
EXPO is a vision of future world. So far 12 EXPOs
have been held. Generally those countries which
are wealthy and technologically advanced host this
gala event. The last EXPO titled EXPO12 YEOSU
KOREA was held at Yeosu, a port city in Korea from
12 May to 12 August, 2012. The site encompassed
the sea and the coast and covered about 2,710,000
square meters. It was so selected to match the EXPO
theme, “The Living Ocean and Coast”. The theme was
adopted to signify the overwhelming impact of the
sea and coast in sustenance of human life and also
to understand the challenges put up to environment
through indiscriminate use of sea resources and
pollution of sea. This EXPO specially offered an
opportunity for exchange of knowledge and experience
on achievements in marine sector and sustainable
development of the marine
industries.
One important aspect of EXPO
is the exhibition of the state-ofthe-art technologies of many
countries in one place. The
unthinkable innovations in the
fields of renewable energy,
transportation,
environment,
household
appliances,
entertainment, industry, etc
are exhibited by participating
countries in their pavilions.
Each country blends their own
innovations and show case a
life-style of the world’s future
people. The mind blowing ideas
are thus flow down to visitors,
which fascinate them as well as
provide food for some to work
on developing the ideas in their
own countries.
EXPO 2012’s main attractions
were the fabulous creation of 3
sites namely, Big-o, Sky Tower,
and the Expo digital gallery. Those who visited the sites
had the experiences of life time that they didn’t see
before. Big-o was a multi –purpose entertainment and
event zone. It produced multimedia shows by bringing
together water jets, flames, laser beams, and lighting
against the backdrop of the open sea. Sky Tower
was a fully functioning pipe organ, built from a pair of
abandoned cement silos. The organ could be played
by the visitors using their smart phones. The Sky Tower
also provided a panoramic view of the Expo site and the

In Expo, apart from show
casing
innovations
in
science and technology, the
participating countries get
a window to introduce their

display their archaeological and natural sites to inform
the people across the world the richness of each
individual country and to promote the tourism of their
respective countries. Expo
2012 had provided this facility
to the participating countries
as it had arranged for about 90
performances a day.
I had the opportunity to visit
EXPO 2011 held in Shanghai,
China. It was a great
experience. Bangladesh took
part in this Expo. Bangladesh
through
its
pavilion
campaigned for inclusion of
the Sundarban, the world’s
largest mangrove forest, in
the world’s 7 natural wonders
to the Expo visitors.
EXPO’s experience has
immense
importance
in the fields of science,
technology, governance and
social development. I feel
that the prominent young
professionals and researchers
in different disciplines should
be sponsored to visit EXPO.
They will have an opportunity
to come across new things in many known and
unknown areas. This experience will help them most
to guide their own works, to choose their selection of
research works and to enrich their on-going works.

The government, and the private sector under
corporate social responsibility (CSR), as well as the
development partners may come up with programs for
visit of young scientists and social scientists to future

The actress and model was born on Feb. 22, 1987.
Han Hyo Joo attends Dongguk University, where she
majors in the dramatics and films department. Her
hobbies include singing and writing and her talents
are playing the piano, telling fairy tales, writing,
running and fencing. Han first discovered at a teenage
beauty pageant in 2003.The drama’s popularity, with
a peak viewership rating of 47.1% in South Korea,
has increased her visibility in the Korean media and
popularity as an entertainment personality. Since the
drama’s conclusion, she has experienced a sharp rise in
interest for endorsement deals and media requests for

Lee Da-Hae was born as Byun Da-hye on April 19,
1984.She is a South Korean actress who has appeared
in a number of Korean television series and dramas
such as My Girl and Green Lee Da-Hae and her
family moved to Sydney, Australia, for five years, and
graduated from Burwood Girls High School before
debuting as an actress in Korea. She now lives with
her mom in Seoul. Besides acting, Lee Da Hae’s other
passion is traditional Korean dance. She has performed
many times in front of small amount of audiences in
Australia. She was also later cast in the 2008 hit action
drama East of Eden along side Yun Jung Hoon and
Song Seung Hun. Once she had collapsed because
her busy schedule along with her excessive workouts
at the gym. Lee Da Hae is set to make her film debut
in a 3D Korean movie titled ‘Song of Spring’, she will
star alongside Lee Sung Jae and Ahn Sung Ki. She
plays the role of the female lead named Ara, a dancer.
