Inventive packing with little friction
Bart Kroese, Sales Engineer, Angst + Pfister Netherlands
Harrie Schonewille, Managing Director PMB UVA International, part of the VDL group
In supermarkets, a continual
battle rages for the best spot
on the shelf. To capture a
prominent position on congested shelves, what’s needed
is attractive packaging that
sets a product apart from the
others. Innovative machines
are needed to manufacture
such packaging. These machines must combine high
performance with flexibility,
simple servicing and – last but
not least – a return on investment. For more than fifty
years, PMB UVA International
has specialized in producing
packaging machines that offer
these advantages.
Nowadays, packaging isn’t designed
with just convenience and hygiene in
mind; it’s also a marketing tool. “The
cheaper the product, the more important the presentation of the bag,” explains Harrie Schonewille, Managing
Director of PMB UVA. “Classy packaging induces the consumer to place a
greater value on the bag’s contents.”
A team-up of two leading machine
builders stands behind the PMB UVA
name. PMB manufactures cigar-making
machinery while UVA specializes in
vertical packaging machines. For more
information, visit www.pmb-uva.com.
Upright packaging, better presentation
The packaging industry is inventive, and
the advertising world takes advantage
of this. Edge seams give packaging stiffness. Resealable strips enhance convenience and product freshness. A “block
bottom” is a flat bottom that enables the
product to remain standing upright.
Guiding block made of the plastic ERTALYTE® TX
Packaging is increasingly being utilized
as a presentation tool. One trend in
packaging is the Doy pack or stand-up
pouch. When one compares this with
other packages lying jumbled in a bin,
the presentation value of such orderly,
vertically standing and thus eminently
readable packaging maximizes the
consumer impact.
Newton 400 TX packaging machine
One machine, different bag forms
The technology
Consumer behavior is fickle and unpredictable. Something can be hot today
and passé tomorrow. PMB UVA has developed a forming, filling and sealing
machine that is capable of producing
different types of bags ranging from
simple potato chip bags to complicated
block bottom bags with resealable
openings. These machines now also
offer the unique innovation of being
able to produce Doy packs as well. The
new machines are ideal for manufacturers who want to respond quickly to mutable consumer preferences. “Different
customers need this flexibility,” says Roy
van Hoof, a machine engineer at PMB
UVA. A big advantage of the Newton
400 TX is that adding additional functions hardly increases changeover
times. “Two to three minutes,” estimates
head engineer van Hoof.
Those who deal with innovation face
challenges. A standard guiding block
made of plastic was unable to withstand
the surface pressure of a nearly 100kilogram set of cross-seal jaws. A sufficiently stiff and hard plastic with a low
sliding friction coefficient might be just
the thing to remedy the problem. PMB
UVA thus went looking for a plastics
specialist and immediately thought of
Angst + Pfister because Angst + Pfister
had already demonstrated its expert
knowledge in the past and was currently delivering good results in its work
with PMB UVA in the area of drive
belts.
In order to produce Doy packs with the
Newton machine, the cross-seal jaws
have to be rotated 90 degrees. The machine must be easy and fast to convert
to be able to continue producing other
types of bags. The jaws are rotated by
means of parallel shifting along the XZ
plane, as shown below.
The advantages of ERTALYTE® TX are:
• very low sliding friction coefficient,
even in dry operation;
• very hard and wear-resistant;
• tight machining tolerances possible;
• dimensional stability;
• complies with FDA standards.
ERTALYTE® TX can be delivered as a
ready-to-use part (machine cut) or in the
form of semifinished plates and round
bars in different sizes.
In order to make this process as simple
as possible and to ensure fast cleaning,
PMB UVA decided on a straight stainless steel strip over which a plastic guiding block is slid.
Design challenges:
• low sliding friction coefficient, even
in dry operation;
• ability to withstand high pressure;
• good machinability.
Angst + Pfister’s solution based on
ERTALYTE® TX meets these requirements.
ERTALYTE® TX is the ideal material for
highly stressed slide bearings. It is particularly recommendable when lubrication is undesired but at the same time a
long service life of the slide bearings is
necessary.
You too can utilize the advantages
of modern slide bearing materials.

you in selecting the right material. Please

TPE hoses – so that shape
and performance are correct
Heinz Birmele, Senior Engineer
In order to relieve kitchen
staff of the job, the newest
generation of fully automatic
cooking devices manufactured
by Rational AG clean themselves. Precisely shaped hoses
play an important role in the
fully automated cleansing
process. Shaped hoses from
Angst + Pfister meet the high
requirements for use in
restaurant and catering operations because they are optimally adapted to tight space
conditions and comply with
hygiene and thermal specifications.
Rational AG, headquartered in the
Bavarian town of Landsberg, has been
focusing on developing technologies for
thermal food preparation for approximately 30 years. Its systematic research
and pathbreaking inventions have made
the globally active company one of the
market leaders in its field, with the highest name recognition in the sector.
Moreover, 100 of Rational AG’s roughly
880 employees are chefs who understand users’ needs and competently
assist them in solving their food preparation problems.
The entire range of SelfCooking Center® equipment for stress-free food preparation
Keep it simple
Shaped hoses made to measure
Compliant material
With the invention and successful
launch of the SelfCooking Center®,
Rational AG’s technology has established itself as a world standard. The
SelfCooking Center® relieves the cook
from overseeing the cooking process
and thus frees him from many routine
tasks that were once unavoidable. This
enables him to concentrate on the essentials, namely quality and creativity.
The technology developed by Rational AG
replaces approximately 40 to 50 percent of all traditional cooking devices in
a professional kitchen.
Each device is equipped with three
different hose types manufactured to
drawing. Their shape has been adapted
to fit tight spaces. They compensate potential assembly tolerances and thermal
expansion of rigid components, and
prevent transmission of vibrations from
moving components to the cooking device. Flexible connections enable easy
assembling and dismantling of components in tight installation spaces. The
three different types of hoses perform
the following tasks:
The TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) quality specifically defined for this application, coupled with the customized fabrication, optimally fulfills the requirements:
Cleaning without risk
The cleaning process is as simple and
secure as the cooking process. At the
touch of a button, the cooking devices
clean themselves fully automatically
overnight, ensuring sparkling and
flawless hygiene. The user can choose
between three self-cleaning processes
with different temperature sequences.
Specially developed detergents and
rinse agents are employed, and they
guarantee economical consumption of
resources by means of an innovative
wash liquor circulation principle.
• suction hose: suction and circulation
of wash liquor consisting of detergent, rinse agent and water;
• pressure hose: feeding and circulation of the wash liquor;
• steam hose: conveys the steam created by the steam generator at temperatures up to +95 °C, as well as the
condensate.
• internationally suitable for use in the
food industry;
• heat resistant for use with steam;
• universal chemical resistance;
• elastically distensible and bendable.
Dual-layer shaped hoses made of TPE
Joint development
The development of a total of 15
shaped hoses for the different types of
cooking devices took place in close
cooperation between Rational AG and
Angst + Pfister. From working out the
basic geometry to manufacturing the
finished dual-layer formed hoses in their
complex shapes, partly also with diameter extensions, several steps with interludes of practical testing needed to be
undertaken.
The specialists at Angst + Pfister paid
particular attention to streamlining production while taking into account the
number of units to be manufactured.
Angst + Pfister delivers the components
directly to the production line and
stands in direct contact with the assembly foremen in the manufacturing cells.

What good are new trashcans
if they’re difficult to recognize?
The City of Vienna Waste
Management Department has
asked itself this question and
has supplied the answer with
its Clean City campaign. Part
of the campaign involves setting up approximately 15,000
public “Mistkübel” – as trashcans are called in Vienna –
that feature attractive colors
to encourage city residents to
make frequent use of them. A
key design element is the fluorescent orange polyurethane
profile from Angst + Pfister
that trims the edges of the
trashcan openings.
In a study comparing the cleanliness of
European cities, Vienna comes in second place behind Riga. But Municipal
Department 48 of the City of Vienna,
which is responsible for waste management and street cleaning, does not wish
to rest on its laurels, as evidenced by its
Clean City campaign. Vienna has allocated five million euros to this project.
Within the framework of the Clean City
campaign, additional street cleaning
personnel were hired and the number of
public trashcans was increased.
Stimulating colors
The objective of this campaign is to encourage the residents of Vienna to make
their own contribution to a cleaner city.
In order to make the trashcans easier to
recognize for the Viennese, all of the
15,000 “Mistkübel” are being distinctively marked with colorful accents in
fluorescent orange by means of a
polyurethane profile that trims the edges
of the openings and simultaneously
protects against injuries.
Technical challenges
The specialists at Angst + Pfister were
called in to help construct the trashcans.
A number of challenging problems
needed to be solved with regard to
construction and materials. The tough
deployment conditions in public spaces
amid direct exposure to wind, weather,
cold, heat and sun rays posed requirements that needed to be met by the profiles’ material quality, including:
• resistance to ozone and weathering;
• resistance to abrasion;
• reliable fastening to the edge with a
durable clamping effect.
In spite of the good clamping effect,
the severe strains placed on the trashcans in everyday use made it necessary
to additionally glue the profile to the
container.
The different trashcan models and the
varying and, in some cases, very complex contours of the opening presented
a particularly difficult challenge.
Since no design drawings of the trashcans were available, the specialists at
Angst + Pfister had to measure the dimensions and shape of the contours of
the trashcans. Occasionally, very small
bending radii had to be taken into account when constructing the profiles. In
one case, it was even necessary to
make recessed notches in the material
on the inside of the bending section of
the profile.
The Angst + Pfister specialists opted to
use thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU),
which meets the aforementioned material requirements. TPU is also easy to dye
and weld. The former attribute was essential for the application at hand in
view of the paramount importance of
the color effect of the edge protection
profiles, and the latter attribute was
necessary for manufacturing the welded
profile rings.
Successful collaboration
The city of Vienna chose Angst + Pfister
because all requirements were optimally
met and Angst + Pfister was capable of
quickly supplying a solution. In addition
to the challenges with regard to materials and construction, the project had to
be completed under enormous time
pressure. Since the marketing department of the City of Vienna wanted to
deploy trashcans trimmed with the profiles at a very early stage of the project
to advertise the Clean City campaign,
Angst + Pfister had to make an initial
partial delivery on extremely short
notice. Close collaboration based on
mutual trust between the client and
Angst + Pfister turned the ambitious
project into a success. Meanwhile,
practically all of the public trashcans in
Vienna are now equipped with edge
protection profiles from Angst + Pfister.
The profiles are real eye-catchers.

Contact in every situation
Christian Rieser, Product Application Engineer
When live parts have to share
tightly confined spaces, materials with excellent electrical
insulating properties are indispensable. The multipole
connectors with up to 150
contacts manufactured by
EMCT Swiss-ConnTec SA are
a good example. If you add
further challenges, such as
resistance to chemical influences, extreme temperatures,
high-energy radiation and
heavy mechanical stresses,
TECHTRON® HPV PPS from
Angst + Pfister is an obvious
choice.
EMCT Swiss-ConnTec SA, a midsized
enterprise based in Schönbühl-Urtenen,
Switzerland, develops, designs and manufactures highly specialized multipole
connectors featuring up to 150 contacts.
Working with great dedication and
extensive expertise in a wide array of
application areas, the family-like team
finds solutions for virtually all connection technology problems. Over the last
25 years, the company has developed
more than 2,500 special solutions worldwide for the mechanical engineering,
railway vehicle, telecommunications,
effects of chemicals, resistance to high
and low temperatures, high mechanical
stability, and – for use in nuclear power
plants – even good radiation tolerance,
call for a plastic material with a broad
deployment spectrum. Currents of up to
150 amperes are reached in applications involving special motor spindle
drives for machine tools, for instance.
Furthermore, plugs can be subjected to
mechanical pressures of up to 1.5 tons.
Multipole plug connector
This led to further cooperation that resulted in the devising of a solution for
a challenging plug seal using a shaped
seal made of H-NBR.
Exceptional material property profile
Individual plug solutions with TECHTRON® HPV PPS
military, tunnel construction and offshore
sectors, and has implemented them in
specific customer applications. A standard assortment of piezoelectric signal
generators and alarm sound generators
round off the company’s product range.
Plug connections for extreme requirements
As much as the users’ industries and the
application areas for plug connections
vary, so do the demanding requirements
placed on the plugs’ materials. Owing
to the plugs’ generally very compact
design, materials with very good electrical insulation properties are needed for
their interiors. Additional requirements
such as good resistance to oils and the
Cooperation produces robust solutions
Working with external specialists from
several different fields, EMCT SwissConnTec SA’s development team looked
for solutions that meet the complex demands placed on the various materials.
Cooperating closely with the plastics
specialists at Angst + Pfister and another
external developer and supplier, EMCT
Swiss-ConnTec evaluated the high-performance plastic TECHTRON® HPV PPS
and discovered it to be an ideal mechanical insulation and component material for plugs. But the developers also
became interested in Angst + Pfister’s
broad product range and expertise in
the sealing technology area.
Extruded semifinished TECHTRON® HPV
PPS products are based on fiber-reinforced linear polyphenylene sulfide
(PPS) with a homogeneously distributed
solid lubricant built in. This modification
produces an interesting combination of
excellent properties such as wear resistance, mechanical toughness and dimensional stability, both in contact with
chemically aggressive media and at
high temperatures.
The biggest advantages of TECHTRON®
HPV PPS are:
• very high upper operational temperature limit in air (+220 °C continuously,
with brief peaks of up to +260 °C);
• high mechanical stability, stiffness
and creep resistance even at high
temperatures;
• excellent chemical and hydrolysis
resistance;
• suitability for contact with food;
• excellent friction and wear properties;
• very high dimensional stability;
• low moisture absorption;
• low outgassing in a vacuum;
• excellent resistance to high-energy
radiation (gamma and x-rays);
• good UV light resistance;
• low flammability;
• good electrical insulation properties
and favorable dielectric behavior.
For instance, TECHTRON® HPV PPS is
employed successfully in industrial drying kilns, in food processing ovens and
in chemical process plants (as a material for components in pumps, valves, and
compressors). This material particularly
lends itself for sliding components operating in chemically aggressive environments or under elevated temperatures.

Security technology behind
the scenes of EURO 08
Hans Fretz, Product Application Engineer
Big events like the 2008 European Football Championship
call for special security measures. Emergency lighting is
an essential element of the security framework of the Basel
St. Jakob Park stadium, whose
seating capacity was expanded to 42,500 spectators
specifically for this major
tournament. In the event of a
sudden power failure, the
lighting must enable the spectators to leave the stadium via
illuminated emergency exits in
an orderly manner without
panicking. In view of the excellent experiences with the
already existing lighting installation, Angst + Pfister was
again entrusted with the job
of expanding the emergency
lighting system for the enlarged stadium.
In just under two years’ time, the seating capacity of the Basel St. Jakob Park
stadium was expanded by about 40
percent to bring it up to standards to
host EURO 08 matches. Constructing an
additional upper deck and a roof while
the stadium was being used nearly continuously posed quite a challenge. Naturally, the passageways to the emergency exits required by law had to be kept
clear and illuminated at all times, even
in the event of a power failure.
Top-priority security issue
Security has top priority when major
public events are held. One essential
requirement is a powerful emergency
lighting system that ensures that spectators can leave the stadium calmly and
orderly via sufficiently illuminated escape routes and emergency exits in the
event of a power outage or fire. This is
why the strictest requirements must be
met with regard to the planning and
installation of the emergency lighting
system, which must be operational at
all times.
Continuation of a proven partnership
As a result of the stadium enlargement,
the security measures needed to be revised and the emergency lighting system
had to be expanded and adapted to
the building’s new structural features.
Angst + Pfister was entrusted with this
demanding task on the basis of the
following decisive criteria:
• Angst + Pfister had already designed
and installed the original emergency
lighting system for the St. Jakob Park
stadium, which opened in 2001 and
at the time had seating capacity for
a good 30,000 spectators. In addition, Angst + Pfister was responsible
for performing maintenance and
routine inspection of the system. This
task includes conducting an annual
test run of the lighting system in a
simulated emergency situation to ensure that it is operational at all times.
• As a systems supplier, Angst + Pfister
had demonstrated with its installation
work and related services in connection with the original St. Jakob Park
St. Jakob Park, Basel
The master is installed in the basement
of the building and controls the entire
system. The status of the entire emergency lighting system is automatically monitored – for example, all of the approximately 500 emergency lamps are continuously checked to ensure that they are
in working order. Faults and failures are
automatically logged, saved, displayed
and printed. The system autonomously
recharges the maintenance-free batteries if the need arises. In the event of a
power outage, it automatically switches
the emergency lighting to battery
power.
emergency lighting system and numerous other projects that it possesses
the requisite expertise and state-ofthe-art products.
• Thanks to its extensive know-how,
Angst + Pfister was able to carry out
the planning work very efficiently,
which resulted in substantial cost
savings for the customer.
Large-scale technical project
Angst + Pfister was entrusted with the
job of supplying and activating the
lighting system extension and was put in
charge of performing maintenance and
inspection of the emergency lighting
system for the stadium, its concession
areas and its underground parking
garage. The intricate expanded emergency lighting system consists of eleven
ECOMATIC ZDCL central-battery emergency lighting units that are interconnected following the master-slave principle. Ten of those units are assigned to
individual sections of the total area
that is to be secured. As decentralized
slaves, they are interconnected with
the eleventh unit, the master.

handled and manipulated in their entirety in three dimensions and with a high
depth of sharpness. For the first time,
the finest structures are now visible in
the nanometer range using the same
device with a resolution of 1,050 line
pairs/mm and a magnification of up to
320x. The stereomicroscope’s zoom
mechanism, which boasts the largest
zoom ratio on the market at 20.5:1,
positions the lenses with the highest
precision in the shortest time using a
stepper motor and a SYNCHROFLEX®
toothed drive belt from Angst + Pfister.
14
A zoom for the most stringent demands
The first motorized zoom drives were
based on planetary and spur gears. The
high cost and especially the considerable noise emissions called for a new
means of transferring motion from the
stepper motor to the control shaft of the
lenses. At the start of the project, Leica’s
clear specifications were:
• reversing angular accuracy of ≤1.8°
at the control shaft;
• defined gear reduction;
• the smallest dimensions as a prerequisite for a space-saving design;
• abrasion-free operation given the
proximity to the lenses;
• quiet transmission;
• a less expensive solution than the
existing gear drive.
The drive installed today in the Leica
M205 FA high-tech stereomicroscope
was constructed using a SYNCHROFLEX®
6 T2/138 toothed drive belt from
Angst + Pfister. During the design phase
and tests, particular attention was given
to the stiffness of the drive belt because
it had to minimize reverberations and
strain on the drive in general. On advice
from the specialists at Angst + Pfister, the
designers chose an SE tooth space with
a reduced width for both gear wheels.
This reduces the play between the drive
belt and the cogged belt pulley and is
therefore recommended for precision
positioning drives. Another tricky task
was to define the manufacturing options
for the tiny drive wheel and to adapt
them to the requirements of Leica Microsystems Schweiz AG. At its thinnest
point, the wall thickness of this brass
cogged belt pulley is just a bit less than
0.4 mm, and the flanges are glued to
the wheel body.
Today, the Leica M205 FA high-tech
stereomicroscope with an optimally tuned
drive solution is available to users in
industry, medicine and research thanks
to the close-knit collaboration between
the designers at Leica Microsystems
Schweiz AG and the specialists at
Angst + Pfister, who exchanged special
product data on SYNCHROFLEX®
toothed drive belts and blueprints of
the gear wheel profiles.
Angst + Pfister gave the customer tips
about optimal pretensioning and dimensioning. The Angst + Pfister employees
were available to provide onsite advice
in the project planning phase and during the function test, which ran the
zoom drive through 100,000 cycles.
Minimal installation space optimally used with SYNCHROFLEX® toothed drive belt
Specifications met
The SYNCHROFLEX® 6 T2/138 toothed
drive belt is made of very abrasion-resistant polyurethane with high-grade steel
reinforcement. The stiffness achieved
guarantees a tightly synchronous transfer of motion, and the polyurethane
teeth engage the pulley grooves with
little noise emission.
Leica Microsystems Schweiz AG’s decision to work with Angst + Pfister hinged
on the following points: Angst + Pfister’s
comprehensive consulting services, its
readiness and ability to supply prototypes and large production batches, its
competitive price/performance proposition and, last but not least, its ability to
supply internationally to assembly operations in Singapore as well.

In the name of research
Jacques Vaudroz, Product Application Engineer
In order to keep the magnets
of the CTF3 particle accelerator at CERN at a constant temperature of +30 °C, hose lines
connected to a demineralized
water supply system are used
for cooling. But how is it possible to achieve resistance
against radioactivity, demineralized water, ozone and
hydrolysis while simultaneously ensuring good electrical
insulation? Angst + Pfister recommended hoses made of
special EPDM with KEVLAR®
meshing.
CERN (European Organization for
Nuclear Research) is the world’s largest
and most renowned scientific laboratory
for particle physics. Its main focus of
research is fundamental physics. With
the aid of highly complex instruments,
physicists are researching the smallest
building blocks of matter – elementary
particles – and are using particle collision to decipher the physical laws of the
universe. The experiments are essentially
conducted on the basis of international
collaboration by teams of physicists
from around the world. CERN was
founded in 1954. It currently has 20
member states and is located near
Geneva close to the Swiss/French border.
One experiment being run by CERN,
called CLIC (Compact Linear Collider),
involves a compact electron-positron linear
collider with energy of 1 to 5 tera-electron volts (TeV = 1012 electron volts).
The experiment is based on the
principle of an accelerator with two
particle beams. One particle beam operating with low energy but high intensity
is launched in parallel with a main highenergy particle beam with the aim of
producing the radio frequency power
needed to accelerate the main particle
beam. The test platform of the CLIC, the
CTF3 (CLIC Test Facility 3), aims to
prove that such a radio frequency power can be produced. The CTF3 project
started in 2001 and is slated to continue until at least 2010.
Feed line for demineralized water
Magnets of the CTF3 test platform
The acceleration sections and the associated waveguides in the CTF3 are kept
at a constant temperature of +30 °C. To
achieve this, demineralized water is
pumped from the water supply unit of
CERN to the highly radioactive areas.
The water supply unit consists of feed
lines with distribution valves and connected hose lines. These flexible lines
surround the magnets that are under
high voltage and focus the particle
beams. For safety reasons, the water
lines must not conduct electricity under
any circumstances.
Meshed NBR hoses were used before,
but this solution proved to be inadequate. The NBR mixture was not sufficiently resistant to high-energy radiation, demineralized water and ozone.
The influence of mechanical stress thus
caused cracks to form over time. In
addition, the meshing exhibited poor
resistance to hydrolysis. Use of a fiberglass meshing was likewise unsuccessful
because it did not withstand pressing
and the hoses became leaky. CERN
turned to Angst + Pfister to find an adequate solution.
The solution
After studying the specifications, a decision was made to use an Angst + Pfister
hose made of special EPDM with an inner liner made of KEVLAR® fibers. The
EPDM compound was specifically developed for this application. It not only
offers the advantage of providing electrical resistance of >109 Ω, but is also
resistant to radioactivity, demineralized
water and ozone – even when under
mechanical strain. The KEVLAR® meshing stands out for its excellent resistance
to hydrolysis and features very good
mechanical properties.
In addition, this product is designed to
withstand a pressure of 12 MPa. This
corresponds to safety factor 6 with regard to operating pressure.
Another advantage of the hose from
Angst + Pfister is that it complies with
fire prevention standard NF F 16-101,
class ⌱4, as well as with CERN’s TIS/IS
41 safety regulations concerning fire
protection and the radiation resistance
of non-metallic materials. CERN was impressed by the many advantages of the
combination of insulating EPDM with
KEVLAR® meshing and thus chose this
solution.
Extra advantage: Mobile hose press
Since all hoses for the demineralized
water supply unit have a specific length,
hoses, fittings and swage ferrules are
delivered separately to CERN. The hose
lines are assembled on site with the aid
of HM UNIFLEX mobile hose presses
provided by Angst + Pfister.
More application possibilities
KEVLAR®-lined EPDM hoses are being
successfully deployed with the CTF3
particle accelerator as well as in other
CERN systems including the large
hadron collider. They are ideal as hose
lines for demineralized and deionized
water and are thus often used in all
types of cooling circuits where good
electrical insulation is required. Possible
application areas include electromagnetic systems, transformers and electrical industrial ovens, as well as the automobile and railroad industries. The
hoses are deliverable from stock, and
special designs are also available. In
addition, Angst + Pfister maintains an
extensive range of press fittings and
clamp jaws. We naturally can also
fabricate ready-to-install hoses.

Successful strategic partnership
Sensor-controlled weighing cells at KWC’s assembly plant
The O-rings are kept in special containers whose net weight
is monitored by sensor-controlled weighing cells.
Reto Müller, Profit Center Leader
Enterprises that wish to successfully maintain or advance
their position in the global
competition need to fully exploit the potential for streamlining procurement and logistics management. With that in
mind, Angst + Pfister offers a
complete range of services to
assist its clients in their efforts
to boost their productivity and
competitive strength. The
renowned KWC AG, a maker
of high-grade sanitary fittings,
is fully utilizing this potential.
The data are transmitted daily via modem
to Angst + Pfister’s logistics partner.
KWC AG has been working together
with Angst + Pfister for years in a longstanding collaboration based on mutual
trust. The subsidiary of the Germanybased Hansa group manufactures highgrade sanitary fittings for households,
the catering trade, public buildings,
hospitals and group homes. Top quality
and excellent design are the hallmarks
of KWC products.
Essential criteria for choosing
Angst + Pfister were:
• Angst + Pfister’s extensive range of
high-quality seals.
• Angst + Pfister’s excellent array of
seals made of materials internationally approved for potable water applications. The terms of approval in all
of KWC’s export markets can generally be met with one single material
quality. That makes inventory management much simpler.
Compelling product assortment
KWC AG selected Angst + Pfister to be its
main supplier of seals. Focusing on one
main supplier enables KWC to simplify
its procurement administration and to
profit from advantageous purchasing
terms by bundling order volumes.
Powerful services
Just as important as the aforementioned
strengths of the product assortment
are the extensive services offered by
Angst + Pfister, which range from consulting to engineering and prototyping,
and extend all the way to state-of-the-art
logistics solutions. KWC is rigorously
utilizing the services on offer, for example for the procurement and fabrication
of a custom-designed seal for a new
single-lever mixer faucet with a swivel
spout.
European logistics center
If the volume of O-rings on hand falls below the minimum
level, a predefined order quantity is automatically delivered.
Product development
In order to dynamically seal the swivel
spout to the stationary part of the faucet,
a specially formed lip seal is needed.
The KWC engineers contacted a sealing specialist at Angst + Pfister in an
early stage of product development.
They know from practical experience
that this is a worthwhile step in product
development. The expertise and experience provided by the Angst + Pfister specialists often shorten the time it takes to
develop economical and high-quality
constructions.
Based on the specifications and wishes
ascertained from discussions with KWC,
Angst + Pfister worked up a proposal for
the construction of an EPDM rubber
molded seal with an X-shaped crosssection and submitted a cost estimate.
Machined prototypes were manufactured within a short period of time.
Once KWC placed the order with
Angst + Pfister, injection molding dies
were made for the production of the
seals.
18
Angst + Pfister works together with a
logistics partner to supply KWC using
a high-tech logistical concept.
Inventory management made easy
KWC stores the new molded seals and
around 150 other types of sealing elements supplied by Angst + Pfister in selfservice warehouses near its assembly
plants. There the sealing elements are
kept in containers whose net weight is
monitored by sensor-controlled weighing
cells. The measurement data are transmitted daily via modem to Angst + Pfister’s
logistics partner. If the number of sealing elements in stock falls below the
minimum level, KWC is swiftly and automatically resupplied with a predefined
order quantity. For the customer, it’s as
if the assembly parts warehouse manages itself.
Sealing elements are so-called C-parts
whose actual product costs on average
account for just around 15 percent of
the total expense, whereas logistical and
technical costs make up the remaining
85 percent. Experience in the manufacturing sector shows that logistics and
engineering expenses can potentially
be cut by more than 50 percent. By exploiting that potential, the cost of endproducts can be substantially reduced.
You too can make use of this potential
by tapping the services provided by
Angst + Pfister. Our specialists will be
pleased to advise you.

RoHS: Cr(VI)-free coatings compared
Heinz Birmele, Senior Engineer
EU directive 2000/53/EC (RoHS)
is in force, and since July 1,
2007, use of electroplated
coatings containing chromium(VI) for the purpose of providing corrosion protection is
now also prohibited in part
of the automobile industry.
Alternative protective coatings
are also increasingly in demand in the mechanical engineering sector. New coatings
compliant with the directive
can already be found on quite
a number of components such
as APSOfluid® cutting ring
couplings from Angst + Pfister.
The following article compares common electroplated
coatings and their performance characteristics from a
practical perspective.
to mechanical wear, not least because
of its proverbial self-healing effect.
Moreover, surfaces protected this way
showed good results in DIN 50021-SS
salt spray tests (100 hours, against
white rust). Every alternative coating
has to stand up to this test.
After numerous years of using hexavalent chromium to coat steel parts for corrosion protection purposes, replacement
substances are now being sought. The
aim is to avoid using hazardous materials and to enable safe recycling at the
end of products’ useful lives. In the future, refraining from using chromium(VI)
will not only be mandatory for passenger cars and commercial vehicles with
total weights of up to 3.5 tons, but will
become a matter of course throughout
industry. The electroplating industry has
long started to transform its processes
accordingly.

Hose fittings with Cr(VI)-free passivated and sealed
galvanizing
Zinc-nickel as a new basis
Comparison of corrosion resistances
Application-specific suitability
A chemically more resistant zinc-nickel
alloy is used as a base layer instead of
zinc. Here, passivation and subsequent
sealing is also applied.
Galvanization coupled with subsequent
passivation and sealing can produce
corrosion protection that is at least
comparable to the previous method of
galvanizing and yellow chromating, as
Figure 1 clearly shows. However, the
self-healing effect is absent.
For use in vehicle production where,
among other things, passing the rigorous salt spray test is essential, a more
resistant zinc-nickel base layer provides the
best conditions. VOSS Fluid GmbH cutting
ring couplings from the Angst + Pfister
product range are the only ones of their
kind to be equipped with this type of
Cr(VI)-free surface protection. Here,
they are the solution of first choice.
Zinc with passivation and sealing
The most obvious and already often
used Cr(VI)-free surface protection is
itself based on a zinc layer. In place
of a chromate layer, passivation is applied. In addition, the surface is sealed.
In the absence of chromium(VI), this surface protection lacks the self-healing effect. The effective performance depends
on the nature and thickness of the sealing.
High demands
The surface protection that has been
used for steel parts in most cases until
now is based on an electroplated zinc
layer of 8–12 μm and a chromate layer
of around 0.3 μm. This type of coating
was of proven value for parts exposed
Even without the self-healing effect, the
treated components maintain very high
chemical resistance, even after handling
and assembly.
Good corrosion protection is also
achieved with zinc as a base layer coupled with passivation and subsequent
thick film sealing. However, performance under adverse conditions depends
largely on the nature of the passivation,
the sealing thickness and the selected
process steps. In most cases, carefully
applied surface protection of this kind
will be adequate in mechanical engineering.

(© VOSS Fluid GmbH + Co.KG)
Furthermore, there is still the alternative
of using stainless steel parts. Even less
expensive chromium-nickel grades such
as W.-No. 1.4301 are fully sufficient
for preventing corrosion. This variant is
preferred for screw-type hose clamps
where the bands and worm screws
undergo high mechanical strain.

Versatile, electrically conducting
construction plastic
Innovative, electrically conducting
high-performance material filled with
carbon nanotubes
A contrast medium renders the
APSOplast® material PPSU P MT XRO
(TECASON P MT XRO) impervious to
x-rays. That is why, for example, instruments or orthopedic test implants made
from this material can be distinctly seen
by surgeons with the help of imaging
systems. The exceptional resistance of
the plastic to strain caused by conventional sterilization techniques offers
additional security.
APSOplast® POM-C AH ELS
(TECAFORM AH ELS) is an electrically
conducting construction plastic (POMC) that has proven its worth in a wide
range of industries thanks to its application versatility. Further distinguishing
characteristics of the material are its
high rigidity, its good sliding and wear
properties, and its resistance to diluted
acids, detergents and numerous organic solvents. The black material is UVresistant and easy to machine. Thanks
to its electrical conductivity, APSOplast®
POM-C AH ELS is predestined for applications in which explosion or electronics protection is required.
APSOplast® PEEK ELS nano (TECAPEEK
ELS nano), an electrically conducting
plastic with excellent chemical resistance that meets the ATEX product directive, guarantees maximum plant
and process safety, even in explosionprone atmospheres. The carbon nanotubes are used as a functional filler
and, thanks to their graphitic surface
structure, ensure high electrical conductivity almost as good as that of a metal.
Since the large specific surface of the
nanotubes makes only a small amount
of filler additives necessary, the advantageous properties of the plastic matrix
– high toughness, low density, good
machinability – are preserved for the
most part. The new material is particularly suited for applications in which
good electrical conductivity and electrostatic discharge are required.
