Stanford Trauma Center program helps
older adults develop balance and agility
to avoid falls and injuries
The Almanac/Veronica Weber
Audrey Avis Aasen-Hull of Menlo Park gets a little help from occupational therapist Marla Mather of the “Farewell to Falls” program during a recent home visit.
I
T’S HAPPENED AGAIN.
ANOTHER
SENIOR HAS
S TAN FORD’S TRAUMA CENTER WITH A HEAD INJURY.
BLOOD IS EVERYWHERE.
ARRIVED
AT
The patient caught his foot on
the edge of the carpet and crashed
head-first into the dining-room
table. He may be lucky, requiring
only several stitches and bed rest,
but for other patients, such a fall
can precipitate the end of independence: a broken hip, brain
injury or a fractured spine.
To prevent such tragedies,
Stanford Trauma Center at Stanford University Medical Center
created “Farewell to Falls,” a free
assessment and agility-training
program for older adults.
The growing numbers of
injured prompted the course.
More than one million older
adults in California fall each
year, with 200,000 of those falls
resulting in injury; and 188
people ages 55 and older are hospitalized every day from slips,
trips and falls, according to the
program’s Web site.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates
older adults who have fallen or
who frequently stumble are two
to three times more likely to fall
By SUE DREMANN
within the next year.
Of the 600 emergency room
cases at Stanford annually, 150
will be trauma-related. Nearly
half of those cases will require
hospitalization, according to Ellen
Corman, injury-prevention coordinator for the trauma service.
The kinds of injuries Stanford
staff treat range from lacerations and head injuries to broken
bones, including wrists and hips.
“The most serious are hip fractures, which can cause the greatest loss of independence. The
number of people with a broken
hip who can’t return home is just
huge,” Ms. Corman said.
Most falls can be prevented
by improved balance, flexibility
and strength training, medication review and simple home
modifications, she said.
Adults who feel dizzy or weak
should see a doctor and have
blood pressure and medications checked. Medications play
a large part in causing falls.
Many seniors take as many as
eight to 12 medications, some
with similar side effects that can
compound, she said.
“Farewell to Falls” accepts
patients who have had a previous
fall. Participants must live in San
Mateo or Santa Clara counties and
must live independently or with a
spouse. They must be ambulatory
and cannot have severe dementia,
Ms. Corman said.

strength-training exercises, such
as the Sit and Be Fit program,
which helps seniors to heal and
gain strength and flexibility while
sitting in a chair or using the chair
as an exercise tool. Such strength
training will help the couple have
the strength to stay upright or, after
a fall, to get up off the ground.
After providing a video showing
the exercises and conducting two
sessions with the couple, staff will
follow up with a phone call every
two to three weeks for a year.
“As you get older, you become
a victim of your own weaknesses,
so to speak,” said Ms. AasenHull, who at 90 still plays violin
in a string quartet. “I’ve fallen so
many times I can’t keep count
— at least 50 times.”
She said that no cause has been
determined for her falls, but she
often finds herself tripping on the
edge of a rug or having one slip out
from under her. She has hurt herself,
but so far hasn’t broken anything.

Tips for avoiding falls
The Stanford Trauma Center’s Web site offers
many tips to avoid falls, including home safety
tips. Below are some highlights:
Avoid dizziness or weakness:
➤ Have blood pressure and medications
checked by a physician
➤ Begin an activity program
➤ Rise slowly after sitting or lying down
Avoid tripping and slipping:
➤ Remove obstacles with lips or high edges, such
as throw rugs
➤ Pick up clutter from the floor and remove electrical cords
➤ Don’t lean on towel bars or furniture for support
➤ Use handrails on stairs

develop the tools to remain fallfree, Ms. Corman said. Many programs are available to help older
adults avoid that first fall. The
YMCA and Avenidas offer classes
geared toward strengthening and
balance for the older adult.
Avenidas hosts 12 fitness classes, and all have components of
strength, flexibility and balance,
said Judith Taksa Webb, manager
of Avenidas’ education and leisure
program. “Strong for Life” employs
elastic bands to promote the activities of daily living. Participants
strengthen and gain flexibility in
joints needed to perform tasks such
as rising from a chair or bed. Tai chi
heightens awareness of the body in
space and improves balance, and
Dayan Qigong, Chinese exercises
to promote health and energy.
“Farewell to Falls” offers many
tips on the Stanford Hospital Web
site at www.stanfordhospital.com/

PORTOLA VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT
PARCEL TAX CITIZENS’ OVERSIGHT
COMMITTEE
REPORT ON USE OF MEASURE C FUNDS
2005-06 SCHOOL YEAR
The Portola Valley School District Parcel
Tax Citizens’ Oversight Committee has held
two meetings on May 10, 2006 and January
30, 2007 to review the use of Measure C
funds for the 2005-06 school year. Committee
members include: Chairperson Hilary Giles,
Mr. Joseph Androlowicz, Ms. Jan Avilla, Ms.
Carolyn Billheimer, Ms. Patty Pope, Mr. Stan
Smith and Mr. Andy Thorson.
The Committee has reviewed the Portola
Valley School District’s 2005-06 budget, audit
report, general ledger financial reports and
parcel tax utilization data and has determined
that Measure C funds have been used for the
following purposes:
Class-Size Reduction –
Grades 4 – 8*
Staffing for Science, Math,
& Reading Support
$430,000
187,400
Classroom Materials
27,455
Staff Development
17,975
Math Curriculum
Development
4,500
TOTAL
$667,330
*Note: Class Size Reduction Funding for
Kindergarten through 3rd Grade is provided
by the State of California.
The Committee further finds that these
expenditures are aligned with the purposes
approved by the voters in Measure C in
March 2004.
On the following pages are the financial
documents which the Committee used in
making this determination.
Copies of the records of the Parcel
Tax Oversight Committee may be reviewed
at the Portola Valley School District Office,
4575 Alpine Road in Portola Valley or on the
District’s web site at www.pvsd.net. The next
meeting of the committee will be May 1, 2007
at 7:00 PM at the District Office.
