The Importance of a Level Floor
At the heart of the Brotherwood Super 5 is a perfectly level, lowered floor.
Wheelchair passengers located on a sloping floor can experience discomfort
and stress in the lower back and neck, due to the incline when trying to see out
from the vehicle whilst seated.
In contrast the level floor of a Brotherwood vehicle offers a stable, comfortable
and natural seating position, for improved visibility and exceptional ride quality.

About Brotherwood®
Since 1985, Brotherwood have been designing, engineering, and manufacturing the highest quality Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles. Our attention
to detail and commitment to quality mean that our ‘WAVs’ carry an excellent reputation with customers across the world.
We place an emphasis on wheelchair passenger comfort in all of our mobility cars, ensuring that the wheelchair user is situated on a level floor,
with a consistent head-height with other seated passengers. This creates excellent visibility from the car, and enables wheelchair users to travel
inclusively with their family and friends. Although our conversion process is extensive, our fully converted vehicles blend in seamlessly with the
other 31 million cars on the UK roads. Each Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle we manufacture is also tested to the highest standards for wheelchair
passenger safety, ensuring your peace of mind when travelling.
This is why Brotherwood conversions are renowned as the very best Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles available today.
Company History
Rod Brotherwood founded Brotherwood Automobility Limited in 1985 after converting a car for wheelchair user friend and neighbour, John
Lambert. John, a former airline pilot, had become paralysed as a result of a motorcycle accident and subsequently had become totally dependent
upon his wheelchair for his mobility. Rod, an ex ‘Westland Helicopters’ apprentice and engineer, at the time was running a vehicle restoration
business.
John asked Rod if he could turn his extensive engineering knowledge to design and build him a vehicle which would easily transport him in his
wheelchair. He wanted the things any customer would look for in a new car, such as smart appearance, convenience and compact dimensions.
In particular John wanted something that didn’t stand out as a vehicle for the disabled. This was a point Brotherwood Automobility has never
forgotten.
Setting out, Rod rebuilt a new Nissan Prairie to enable John to travel centrally in the vehicle, whilst enjoying the same ride and visibility as the driver
and other passengers. When the car was complete in August 1985, Rod produced a brochure, and using the original vehicle as a demonstrator,
got two orders in 10 days. Immediately he started small-scale production. Production increased from 26 converted cars in the first year as the
business grew.
By 1991 the company built a new factory on an extensive site in the small hamlet of Beer Hackett, near Sherborne. At that time 18 employees
were producing around 12 vehicles a month, but greater demand was there and Rod looked at expanding his range into different sizes, prices
and styles of vehicle.
In 2003 a modern administration building was attached to the main factory, named Lambert House in recognition of John’s friendship with Rod.
After making an investment in a Brotherwood vehicle, many of our customers go on to own their cars for many years. Our high level of customer
care means that we often see customers returning to us for service, even with cars that were manufactured 20 years ago.
The original Brotherwood ethos of creating a vehicle that provides comfort, inclusivity and visibility for the wheelchair passenger, whilst also being
quick and easy to load, still holds true today, ensuring that every Brotherwood customer enjoys an unrivalled travelling experience.
