What are you viewing through your windscreen - Vernon Dates?
Snapped by Vernon Dates young fella at last years
Jeep Jamboree—something you don’t see often
through your windscreen! Jeeps racing around
Mount Panorama. Well, doing the speed limit
anyway, which could be pretty hairy in an old
banger especially going down the other side!

STATEMENT and FINE PRINT Information
World War 2 Jeeps NSW is NOT a formal Motor Vehicle Club, but more an “Association” of
WW2 Jeep enthusiasts, bonded together by this e—newsletter. It’s sole intention is to share
information about their vehicles, future displays, trips and events. It was founded in 1991 by
the late Peter Walker in an effort to bring together genuine users of the legendary Jeep.
Contact can be made with the current “Committee” as per the email addresses on the cover.
Joining information for new members is, a sense of participation and contribution to the
Association for your benefit and that of others, your email address for sending of the
newsletter, (this can be of a family member or friend if you don't have one—Don’t forget to
tell them!), a good colour picture of your Jeep along with a few words of your Jeep related
history, so we can introduce you via a “Member Profile”. If you have any Jeep related
restoration talents, please let us know and whether you are prepared to offer any advice to
fellow members. If you really like what we do, then a “Donation” towards our HQ development.
Members, their relatives, friends or guests are reminded that some Four Wheel Drive
activities, events or trips notified herein, can be extremely dangerous. Participation in any
activity, event or trip is entirely up to the individuals discretion and that no responsibility,
what so ever, can be held against any land holder, group or individual, for what ever situation
that may arise, in travelling to or from or during the course of that activity, event or trip.
If we are participating in an activity, event or trip organised by others outside of the
Association, we do so as a group of individuals at their invitation. Prior contact with the person
organising any particular activity, event or trip advertised herein is mandatory, to avail
yourself with the most up to date and correct information, as dates and itinerary can change
due to unforeseen circumstances.
Finally, views expressed in our newsletter are also individual and do not necessarily reflect the
Association as a whole. Membership lists forwarded from time to time are for the benefit of
those listed for contact purposes amongst each other only and are not intended for
dissemination to third parties or to be used for soliciting of unrequested services and or

Bazza’s Say....
Greetings to you all, Mitch prompted me to “have ago”
and although its more of a New Members Profile, than a
“Say” on any particular subject, I would like to tell you about my affair with
Horatio H B.
I saw my first Jeep in the early forties. During WW2 the American
Army had a base in a Nursing Home not far from our house and there
was a continual movement of vehicles to and from the base and that
was my first contact with Jeeps. I remember telling my mates that one
day I will have one of those. It was 1983 before that happened.
The previous owner had started restoration but due to a medical problem he could not proceed with it. The motor, gearbox, diffs etc had
been finished and fitted to the chassis but the body was a different story. Work had started on it but it was full of bog and after sandblasting
the real condition was revealed. Several panels needed to be replaced.
The rest of the trailer full of bits and pieces, I learned later that the
motor and chassis was Willys and the body from a Ford.
Due to family commitments, I didn’t start my restoration until I retired in 1991. Work continued at a
steady pace with advice and guidance from Max and Neil Goodridge. In early 1995 I applied to go on the
“Back to the Track” trip to Darwin, so I had to apply some “giddy up” to the project. Unfortunately about
a month before departure, I had a ladder accident and fractured my right heal bone. The closest I got to
Darwin was to wave goodbye to the Sydney Group as they left Nazareth House heading to Central Railway to load the vehicles onto the train, but at least the Jeep was finished and registration was done. (Only
after a very detailed inspection by two DMR inspectors prior to the blue slip inspection.)
The only use it got was to attend local parades until 2000, when I attended the Jeep Diamond Jubilee in
Tamworth where I was awarded 3rd prize for the “Most Sensibly Modified Jeep”

OFF THE INTERNET—Somewhere in Europe?
Nice way to get some attention! An original looking Press
Jeep and a fairly happy local lass about the war being
over is my guess.
Perhaps we can get Akiss, our Greek Correspondent and a
great photographer of women (and Jeeps) to update us?
He even has a Press Jeep—True!

Who can I shit stir this month? Well know one, no one wants to
talk to me! The Roads Minister, his staff, no one! Was once
told, if you don’t have something nice to say, then don’t say it!
Some interesting things coming up, particularly ANZAC Day.
Hope you all can get out there and help. We have lots of
members doing stuff, none the least, our regular gig at
Tamworth.
Speaking to Dave Mc. The other day, who again has issued you
all a hearty invite to be a part of the huge proceedings in a town
that greatly appreciates their Diggers and those that help them.
Bazza Greenland hopes to attend and if you want to join him in
a drive up there, he would appreciate a bit of company.

KOKODA 75th Anniversary 1942-2017— (Our “Ragged Bloody Heroes”)
2017 marks the 75th anniversary of the Kokoda Track Campaign.
Kokoda is one of the most significant campaigns in Australia’s history.
Ordinary Australians became extraordinary Australians fighting a continual battle against the elements,
inhospitable terrain and a voracious enemy hell bent on taking their land and our Australian freedom.
When you walk Kokoda with all its obstacles and challenges you feel the aura and spirit of the young men who
defeated an enemy, an enemy who had never been conquered, an enemy that had never tasted defeat.
Our diggers overcame overwhelming odds and atrocious conditions, outnumbered and out gunned their victory
was possible due to their trust and respect for each other, their dependence on each other, their ability to never
give up, to hang in there when all seemed lost, self belief, courage, endurance, mateship, sacrifice, and
resilience.
To walk in the footsteps of heroes, to walk in the footsteps of our brothers is a heady experience, it is an
experience a turning point that blows away our preconceived limitations of our physical ability, endurance and
reminds us that the human spirit and our boundaries are only limited by our ability to dream and believe.
With our Kokoda Veterans now in there 90’s… 2017 may be the last significant anniversary to commemorate,
to remember and to be empowered by the indomitable Spirit of these incredible men.
How will you show your respect to our real Australian heroes in 2017?
Achieve something extraordinary.. (This Company specialises in treks over the Track, however has other info.)
The above and significant Kokoda Dates from this website—http://www.kokodaspirit.com.au/kokoda-statistics/

Since 2002, I have attended the Swim-In at Corowa five times and enjoyed Tamworth ANZAC Day
parade each year except for the last two years (due to medical problems), but I will be there this year
and I look forward to seeing all the regular faces and any new ones again.
What’s behind the name HORATIO H B, you might ask? Well, I was visiting a friends farm with the
Jeep, driving around the paddocks, when suddenly, each time I turned the steering wheel, the horn
would blow and it was suggested I name it “Horn Blower”. At the time on the tele, there was a show
about a Navy Captain with the name HORATION HORN BLOWER, and I thought that sounds
better, so it was reduced to HORATIO H B.
Happy Jeeping to all—

UPDATE—From Jeep News No.166 October 2015
This was posted on the Corowa Facebook page and
reprinted here in the interests of keeping you
informed JIC you were about to launch a rescue
mission? “I’ve just completed 25,217 km or 15,669
miles around Aussie in my Jeep. I’d like to give a
huge shout of thanks to both Nigel from MVSPARES
and Neil from MARATHON SPARES. For their
fantastic support. I’ve rebuilt the engine at 20000km
after its first failed build. Then replaced the transfer
box and gearbox housings after a selector fork nut
came loose and exited through the casting. The clutch
needed replacement after Corowa last year. The
broken steering column whilst driving was the most
fun. One last thanks to Dallas and Glen for their help
in the gearbox issue.
This is what makes Jeepin’ fun, the people ya meet.
Enjoy Corowa this year, sadly I cant make it.
Happy and safe travels to all attending. Gary.”

INFORMATION
Hi Mitch
I'm after a G503 trailer so I can move mine
around to distant fields. Someone said you
know of a person who builds light weight
trailers so they fit a G503 perfectly with
guide rails for the wheels etc.
Can you help, please? Regards
Al Hirschel 0415-259 777 [email protected]
PS Cullen Bullen last year was great, when is
the next 'working bee' so I may assist?
Mitch, I have had a look at a KS5—1945 International Lorry, it
is in original condition, shedded all its life except for its army
days, runs and stops 6 volt system, has a Ford table top not the
round cornered inter, what is a fair price for it?
Mitch would you mind asking the team for me?
Thanks Dave Mc.Ilveen (0404) 059 151
Well Allan, not sure who to recommend to build a trailer.
Ken Berry of CMI Safes in Sydney just recently built one specially
for the Jeep but that to me makes it useless for anything else if
needed. I have seen a few with large dual axle box trailers
modified for the purpose. I guess many have differing ideas and
how much you have to spend?
But it would make for an interesting feedback?
Glad you had a good time and will be great to see you next time.
Not sure when the working bee will be as we are still getting bits
for the hot water service, so standby ….. Cheers Mitch

A nice picture of some Corowa wildlife, but
more importantly to us, its Don Marriot’s
Jeep! Yes Don went to Corowa this year and
recently in a conversation, he told us, he had a
good time down there. Even getting the roof
off.
Been a bit busy since last seeing him at
Oberon in February, attending his local
Shows at Cumnock and a little further afield
at Wellington, where he was pleasantly
surprised to return to his Jeep after a trip
around the Showground to find a large
envelope on his seat. It contained a certificate
for picking up FIRST PRIZE in the Jeep era
judging of the many cars in attendance.
Well done! He is looking forward to seeing us
again back out at his joint and even reckons
he is going to shout all attending Jeepers a
meal at the pub!
THIS PAGE HAS BEEN INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK

DEAR DOROTHY
TIPS, Q&A and TALES OF WOE
Dear Dorothy, writes Rick of Maitland way, Thought readers may be interested in this.
Discovered that the left shifter rail when installed was slightly longer than the original, and the result was
damaged to the gear in the transfer case. Something to be weary of in their future works!
Also, he did want to know “if it is possible to convert an Army transfer intermediate shaft 3/4" bore to a 1-1/4”
bore and install CJ5 gears? I have seen a CJ5 converted to fit an Army Transfer Case, but seems a lot more
effort. I have had the caged needle rollers fail one too many times! However, he later answered his own question.
I have spoken to John Wilson about the issue I have with my transfer case and he has told me an army transfer
can be modified to fit the larger 1-1/4"shaft.

I was hoping you could print these two Fault Finding Charts I used when I was in the Army Corps of
Transport. There is one for petrol vehicles and one for diesel vehicles. When printed out and laminated they
are perfect for the glovebox. Would make a great addition to the Jeep Newsletter. Regards Phill

On the 26 and the 27 of March 2016 a Military event took place in Halkida Town in Greece. The
main Event was organised by the local scale model club Panevoikos Association of Modelers, The
event took place in a house called the Red House "Kokkino Spiti" by the beach which was used by
the Wehrmacht during WWII as "Kommandantur". Right outside on the square in front of the house
and in the gardens there was a display of reenactors of WWII with Greek Uniforms as well as US
and German. there were also Korean War reenactors from the Greek Expeditionary Forces from the
Korean war. The Uniforms were accompanied with military vehicles from WWII and Korean war.
In more detail there was a Korean war Field Hospital and tents with everyday personal objects
which were used by the Greeks during WWII. Thousands of people were gathered despite the heavy
rain on the second day of the event. I personally Drove my Willys MB, U.S. War Correspondent
