JEERNODHARANA KUMBHABHISHEKAM
Monday May 25 to Sunday May 31, 2015
Dear Devotees, please treat this as your personal invitation to participate
with your family and friends in Jeernodharana Kumbhabhishekam
ceremony at Sri Siva Vishnu Temple (SSVT) from May 25-31, 2015.
Presiding over the religious ceremonies are SSVT’s two Pradhana Acharyas,
Sri Shanmukha Sivacharyar from Chennai and Sri Koti Ramaswaroopa
Raghavacharyulu from Badrachalam. Our learned temple priests,
accompanied by visiting priests from India and around the US, will
conduct the ceremonies in accordance with Shaiva, Vaishnava, Tantric and
Madhwa Agamas. Our Sthapati, Madhu Selvanathan, whose shilpis have
been hard at work through snow and ice, will also grace the occasion.
The weekend preceding the Jeernodharana Kumbhabhishekam is full of
special activities. On Saturday, May 23rd there is a special puja by women
of all ages, Manjal Neeratu.
On Sunday, May 24th morning is a special program for children, followed by an
afternoon discourse in English tailored for a youth audience by Shri Dushyant
Sridhar from Chennai: ‘Hanuman - A selfless devotee and a role-model to us’
Then in the evening, a grand kick-off concert for all ages by Shri Yesudas,
followed by dinner.
The ceremonies starts on Monday, May 25th with Poorvanga Pujas and
Maha Sankalpam. Details of the various pujas by day are in the program.
Sunday, May 31 morning is the culmination with the Vimana Rajagopura
Mahakumbhabhishekam and the Moolalaya Maha Kumbhabhishekam
Following the Kumbhabhishekam the Mandala Abhishekham continues
for 45 days to complete all the ceremonies.
SSVT wishes to express its eternal gratitude to the Asthana Acharyas of the
temple, Sri Sri Savya Sachi Swamigal and Sri Sri T. S. Sambamurthy Sivachariar,
and to our Chief Architect, Dr V. Ganapati Sthapati. These departed souls have
left us with cherished memories and their manifold blessings.
Looking forward to seeing you all with members of your family,

Pravachanam/Religious Discourse in English
by: Sri Dushyant Sridhar
Sunday, May 24th 2:00 PM
This young upanyasakar has been making waves, thanks to his modern interpretation of the Vedas and the Puranas
’2015‘. He is in fact taking a group of children and teenagers on a Harry Potter trip. The group is fascinated and they
listen to him without a break. Meet the modern upanyasakar who connects to the young through his discourses by
bringing a contemporary perspective to epics and derives logic ‘2015’ says the The Hindu.
Sri. Dushyanth Sridhar, a 28-year old technocrat, an alumnus of BITS, Pilani (a leading technical school in India)
has delivered over 1500 lectures across the world (in 100 cities and 11 countries). He has undergone training in the
scriptures for over 15 years. He has a large young following for the contemporary connect he makes. Let’s hear him
out! Topic geared to the next generation:
‘Hanuman - A Selfless Devotee and a Role-Model to Us’
Hanuman is a role-model to pristine and unadulterated devotion to Rama. He was eloquent, learned and yet humble.
No character in any of the Hindu scriptures can ever match Hanuman in his aura. It will be a befitting experience to
listen to a lecture on this from Sri.Dushyanth Sridhar

MEENAKSHI KALYANAM
Sunday, May 3, 2015
The union of Lord Siva with Parvati in the form of Meenakshi took place in
Madurai on the Chitra Poornima day. This union is celebrated in many of the
Siva temples around the world as Meenakshi Kalyanam. Lord Vishnu, who
is the brother of Meenakshi, gave away the bride to Lord Siva. Hence in our
temple which is dedicated to Siva and Vishnu (and their families) this festival
has an added significance.

BASAVA JAYANTI CELEBRATION
Saturday,May 9, 2015
Basava Jayanti is traditionally observed by the Lingayats and is observed
as a holiday in the Indian state of Karnataka. It marks the birthday of
Basavanna, 12th-century poet-philosopher, and the founding saint of
the Lingayat religion. It is celebrated with much pomp and gaiety all over
south India, majorly in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
Basava took birth on third day of Vaisakha month of the Anandanama
(Samvatsara) year in Rohini (Nakshatra) star.
HANUMAT JAYANTI (VEDIC)
Friday, May 13, 2015
People in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh observe Hanumat Jayanti
on Lunar Vaisakha Bahula (Krishna) Dasami. This day falls on Friday,
May 13 this year according to North American Panchangam. On this
day there will be Sahasranama Archana and a special Vada Alankaaram
to Lord Anjaneya. Those devotees who would like to bring Vadas (no
onions or garlic in the Vadas please!) for the Alankaram are requested
to do so by 5:30 pm so that the priests may plan the decoration
accordingly. Participation by more than 100 devotees in the Sahasranama
Archana will make it a Laksharchana. Sponsorship is not a requirement

Robotics Club Activities & Schedule
SSVT Robotics team did well at both the DC and Chesapeake
regionals held locally in March and April 2015. The team won a safety
hard hat award for an amazing safety video made by students. The
chairman’s committee felt even though the SSVT team was young
(3 years old) they have made sufficient inroads in engaging and
inspiring the next generation.
To end the season thanks to SSVT, the team sponsored a social at
College Park that was very well attended. There were teams from
Israel, Abu Dhabhi, Brazil at the competition and over 100 students
joined Team Illusion members at the social. The students stayed late
into the night and enjoyed traditional Indian vegetarian food.
Several students have expressed interest in joining the activities and
they have been asked to register after June as the spaces at 8812 Orbit
lane will be used for Design Your Own Temple and JK2015 events.

2nd Annual SSVT Sri Papanasam Sivan Festival
Saturday, May 16th, 2015
On Saturday May 16th, 2015, SSVT will celebrate its second annual
SSVT Sri Papanasam Sivan Festival. This great composer of the 20th
century (September 26, 1890 – October 10, 1973), known as “Tamil
Thyagayya” will be remembered that day in music and dance, through
his varied compositions such as varnams, padams, javalis, krithis etc.
The festival is open to all rasikas of the greater Washington DC Metro
area to attend and participate as individuals or groups. All music
/ dance items should be strictly limited to 5 minutes or less. Raga
alapana or swara kalpana are not expected. Group participation is
encouraged in order to accommodate a larger number of participants.
Sri Papanasam Sivan used to go around the Mada streets surrounding
the Kapaleeshwarar temple in Mylapore singing songs in praise of the
deity. In emulating this practice, the SSVT event will start with a Giri
Pradakshinam, a procession around the SSVT temple prakaram. All
devotees and music participants are invited to join in the
procession singing, culminating in an archana at the Praakara
Ganapathy Sannidhi. The highlight of the evening will be a vocal
concert by the leading musician Sri. Bharat Sundar, accompanied by
Sri V.V.Murari (violin), Sri Trivandrum Balaji (mrudangam), and Sri
K.V. Gopalakrishnan (kanjira). Admission to the entire event is free.
To register for participation, you may follow this link: http://tinyurl.
com/2015-PS-Festival, and provide the required
registration information. Time slots will be allotted, as available, in the
order the requests are received. The deadline for registration is May
9, 2015. Further program details and updates will be available via the
temple notice board and website.
Preetha Narayanaswany (in VA) and Vaidehi Kannan (MD) will be
teaching a few krithis for the processional singing. Please contact
them if you would like to learn the songs and participate in the
procession. Preetha – [email protected], and
Vaidehi - [email protected].
