about Osteopathy
about Institute of Osteopathy
1.
Osteopathy gives a chance to the patient’s body to find the health put in it by nature, to
return to natural state of norm.
2.
3.
1.
Osteopaths know that life is movement. The easiest way to feel the movement is by hand —
which the physician has been already provided with by nature. Hands of osteopath can
“think, feel, see.”
The Institute of Osteopathy of Saint Petersburg State University (SPbSU) and
North-West State Medical University named after I. I. Mechnikov (NWSMU) provides the students with the licensed public education in accordance with the
Russian legislation.
2.
Osteopathic diagnosis does not exclude the instrumental approach. At the same time,
hand as a tool can detect dysfunction where no disease has yet been formed. Osteopathy
is predictive, preventive and personalized medicine.
Since the moment of its foundation in 2000, the Institute of Osteopathy has
trained more than 200 specialists — nowadays the staff of leading clinics of the
country.
3.
The Institute of Osteopathy provides training to students with graduate medical
education.
4.
Education at the Institute is performed as full-time or part-time (seminar) program, the latter is convenient for practicing physicians.
5.
The training course includes lectures, practical training and clinical practice at
leading hospitals and research institutes. After passing final tests, students of the
Institute receive a state diploma.
6.
Following the results of training, each student defends a thesis, which is published in the “Russian Osteopathic Journal” in the form of article.
7.
Since 2006 the research laboratory of the Institute of Osteopathy together with
Russian and foreign osteopathic schools and organizations conducted the verification of osteopathic treatment efficacy.
4.
The task of osteopath is not only to cure the patient, but also to consider all factors
influencing his body: lifestyle, food, emotions, movement. The osteopath helps the patient to treat himself correctly.
5.
Osteopathy can help the mother to give birth to a healthy baby. One can only wish that
every woman’s entire pregnancy is overseen by an osteopath.
6.
Those children who are managed by osteopath since birth go their way in life more easily,
do not waste their time and energy on disease and anywhere are in time. Physician refers
to them as “osteopathic”, while parents call them “successful, healthy and cheerful.”
7.
In the sport of records the quick recovery of health and strength is fundamental. Osteopathy helps athletes to keep their main capital, — health — which will provide the
country with gold medals.
8.
People abroad use osteopathic services for 140 years already. In Russia osteopathy appeared about 20 years ago. Today it is necessary to combine the efforts of osteopaths in
further development of a young specialty in our country.
8.
In 2010, on the initiative of the Institute of Osteopathy of SPbSU and NWSMU,
a self-regulatory organization of osteopaths, — “Interregional Osteopathic Association” — was established.
9.
The waiting list for highly qualified osteopaths is sometimes as long as six months. Experienced specialists are not simply in demand in Russia, but critical.
9.
Teachers of the Institute of Osteopathy are not only practicing osteopaths with
an experience of allopathic practice, but professional educators also.
10.
Osteopathy is not a material-intensive medicine. The main investment of the future
osteopath is the education.
10.
The Institute has formed a strong teacher group, consisted of more than 40 specialists including representatives of international osteopathic schools.

— 125-year history of Saint-Petersburg Medical Academy of Postgraduate Studies originating from the first Russian medical refresh institute — Clinical Institute of Grand
Duchess Elena Pavlovna, awarded a title of an Imperial Clinical Institute in 1896, on one
side, and
— 100-year history of Saint-Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I. I. Mechnikov established by the famous Russian psychiatrist and academician V. Bekhterev in
1907, on the other side.
Saint-Petersburg State University (SPbSU), founded by Peter the First in 1724, is the
oldest higher institute of the country. Its strong scientific base was already laid by the
first professors, and mathematicians Leonard Euler and Daniel Bernoulli, historian Gottlieb Bayer and Mikhail Lomonosov, the great Russian scientist and polymath, were
among them.
Today, thanks to the rich historical background and extensive research activities that
meet the requirements of modern society, these institutions maintain their high position and prestige in constantly changing academic world.
In 2008, Saint-Petersburg State University and Saint-Petersburg Medical Academy of
Postgraduate Studies signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of osteopathy
aimed to further development of public education and intercollegiate cooperation and
combined their efforts to train skilled professionals in demand. This allowed the Institute of Osteopathy to form a strong teaching group, consisted of more than 40 talented
osteopaths, known both in Russia and abroad. Among them, there are PhDs, authors of
numerous scientific papers and books on osteopathy. The work “under the wing” of the
oldest Russian universities requires the staff of the Institute to improve their skills constantly and make great demands both to themselves and to the audience.

Today the Institute of Osteopathy trains specialists who are ready not only to treat a
disease, but also to prevent it. Since the development of osteopathic techniques is not
possible without a deep knowledge of anatomy, physiology and differential diagnosis,
all students of the Institute shall have a medical degree already. The course includes
lectures, practical classes and clinical practice.
Each graduate of the Institute is a skilled osteopath, whose
professional assistance is in demand day by day.
The teachers of the Institute pay special attention to form a so-called “osteopathic
hand” in students, which is able to listen tissues of the human body and communicate
with them. This is impossible without teacher — student individual work.
The state diploma stamped by the Universities and signed by pro-rectors of SPbSU and
NWSMU named after I. I. Mechnikov is issued to those who complete the entire course.
High requirements to students, the need to defend a thesis at the end of training and
to participate in scientific activities allows the Institute to “grow up” skilled specialists.
We can guarantee the quality of their work both to employers and to patients.

Science
Evidence-Based Medicine
Andrew T. Still wrote: “Osteopathy is a science. Osteopath shall be a rational person proving his words by actions”. So, the desire of the Institute to confirm osteopathic
treatment efficacy by objective facts and figures resulted in creation of research laboratory in 2006. The laboratory is leading its work with the participation of psychologists, osteopaths, physicists and engineers. Scientific staff of the laboratory focused not
only on verification of osteopathic treatment efficacy, but on the study of endogenous
rhythms of the human body as well. During their work they received several patents on
methods and inventions that enable to express what osteopath can feel by his hands, in
numeric equivalent.
To get closer to academic sciences, osteopathy started to follow the strict methodology of scientific researches. This allows not only including osteopathy in the official list
of medical specialties, but also provides the possibility of serious academic study, fully
met the criteria of evidence-based medicine.
Thanks to authority of the higher medical schools — SPbSU and NWSMU named after
I. I. Mechnikov, scientific activity of the Institute is not closed in “on itself” — annually
the advanced scientists from the best laboratories of the country are involved in its
work. Teachers and students of the Institute conduct scientific researches in the largest
clinics of Russia, such as Obstetrics and Gynecology Scientific-Research Institute named
after D. O. Ott (Russian Academy of Medical Science), Maternity Hospital No.9, SaintPetersburg Scientific-Research Institute for Physical Culture, Institute of Evolutionary
Physiology and Biochemistry named after I. M. Sechenov (Russian Academy of Science).
The “Obstetrics” project, implemented together with the Institute of Obstetrics and
Gynecology named after D. O. Ott (RAMS), is studying the osteopathic approach efficacy
in the third trimester of women’s pregnancy during their preparation for the birth. Studies have shown that patients who passed osteopathic correction have fewer birth complications. Osteopathic treatment makes prerequisites for the improvement of placentofetal blood flow. This is confirmed by Doppler sonography results and histodiagnosis
of placenta.
Since 2007 one can found the results of scientific activity of the Institute, as well as our
colleagues from Russia and abroad representing different fields of medicine, in “Russian
Osteopathic Journal” issued by our Institute — up to date the only scientific periodical in
our country, dedicated to osteopathy. This journal opens a door for Russian osteopaths
to a unique practical experience of foreign colleagues and represents current issues that
osteopathic community is facing. It is issued for strengthening the position of osteopathy as a science. Published materials contribute education of competent and scientifically trained readership. Made with love to osteopathy, the journal reflects the position
of the Institute on the way of development of this science in the modern world.
8
The Institute of Osteopathy, in accordance with the priorities of new Russian healthcare concept of preventive, personalized and predictive medicine, has been conducting
several research projects, allowing objectively demonstrate the osteopathic treatment
efficacy for a number of disorders.
Together with the department of Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases of NWSMU named
after I. I. Mechnikov, the Institute of Osteopathy supervises patients with irritable bowel
syndrome. Electrogastroenterography method helps to show the osteopathic treatment
efficacy objectively. In the future we plan to conduct researches on the metabolic syndrome problem.
In 2013 the Institute staff completed a study of the osteopathic impact on patients
with ischemic stroke. This project has shown that osteopathic treatment improves cerebral blood flow of patients and their quality of life.
The purpose of these projects is not only the verification of osteopathic treatment efficacy, but also the integration of osteopathy as a medical technique in treatment and
preventive measures undertaken at a number of diseases.

Cooperation
Realizing that nobody can develop in isolation, the Institute of Osteopathy of SPbSU
and NWSMU named after I. I. Mechnikov seeks to interact with leading representatives
of the osteopathic community in Russia and abroad. As a member of the Osteopathic International Alliance (OIA), the Institute cooperates with local and international osteopathic schools and organizations: the joint research activity is conducted with higher
osteopathic schools in France and Israel on the basis of cooperation agreements. Teachers of the Institute communicate with more than 50 osteopathic clinics in the country.
Currently the Institute of Osteopathy on behalf of the Russian Ministry of Health is
developing a program of professional retraining and residency training in osteopathy.
Due to our cooperation with the leading osteopathic schools in the world, we can conduct a dialogue on the methodology of osteopathy teaching with the most reputable
foreign experts. Such a dialogue is an important step towards harmonization of both
educational programs in osteopathy and requirements to osteopaths.
Institute is supported by the leading research institutes and universities of Russia,
such as: Polyclinic of the Business Administration for the President of the RF, Kazan
State Medical Academy, Vladivostok State Medical University and many others.
Teachers of the Institute are members of Russian and international osteopathic organizations, such as: American Academy of Osteopathy and Russian Osteopathic Register.
Maximum involvement in the life of the osteopathic community allows teachers and
students of the Institute to conduct researches together with foreign colleagues, to participate in various symposiums and conferences, to publish articles in international osteopathic journals.
Besides that, the Institute interacts with other areas of medicine. Students of the
Institute of Osteopathy do their clinical practice in maternity clinics and hospitals of
our country. They “in fact” open the potential of osteopathic medicine and osteopathic
treatment efficacy to medical specialists. The Institute’s staff presumes that combined
efforts of osteopaths and other medical specialists can give the key for improving the
efficiency of our healthcare system.

International Symposium
Osteopathy Open is an academic convention of the osteopathic community members
and representatives of classical medical approaches dedicated to pressing challenges in
modern medicine and in osteopathy as one of its methods.
From the moment of the first symposium in 2002, annually during the city’s White
Nights Saint-Petersburg becomes the world capital of osteopathy. SPbSU and NWSMU
named after I. I. Mechnikov call together leading osteopaths in order to exchange an
experience and ideas about the development of osteopathic medicine.
Over a 10-year history, worldwide known osteopaths repeatedly were among the
guests of the symposium: Robert Rousse, Roger Caporossi, Jean-Pierre Amigues, Serge
Paoletti, as well as famous representatives of Russian medical science, such as Alexander A. Skoromets, Alexander P. Scherbo, Georgy A. Ivanichev, Nikolay P. Erofeev, Alexander N. Shepovalnikov and others.
During plenary sessions, representatives of Russian state medicine and education, local and international osteopathic associations discuss issues related to the scientific
basis of osteopathic treatment. At workshops not only the advanced technologies for
osteopathic diagnostics and treatment are introduced but the guests can determine the
vector of further professional development.
Apart from the main symposium program, our guests have the opportunity to explore
the cultural capital of Russia and communicate with colleagues and associates in an
informal setting.
“The Role of Structural and Functional Abnormalities in the Formation of Disease” is
the topic of the Osteopathy Open 2013 milestone symposium. Well-timed correction of
structural and functional abnormalities at the stage of pre-existing disease is one of the
goals of modern medicine, aimed at maintaining and improving the nation health.
The symposium is also a rendezvous for the graduates of the Institute of Osteopathy
of previous years. The joy of meeting old friends and favorite teachers creates a bright
and cheerful holiday atmosphere.

Academic Traditions
As osteopath heals by his hands and his heart, the Institute creates a comfortable
atmosphere for the students so that training process not only fills the need for new
knowledge but gives joy also. Each lecture or practical class provides an opportunity for
professional growth. Communication with colleagues is one of the most enjoyable components of the training process.
During the 13 years a number of traditions have been developed in the walls of Institute of Osteopathy, both in training and in extra-curricular activities. Such meetings, as
Osteopathy Party and Osteopathy Open, became traditional, as well as commencement
exercises for graduates of the Institute.
Being involved in the training process of the Institute of Osteopathy, its students have
to defend a thesis, some parts of which are published in the Russian Osteopathic Journal. As such an experience is quite unusual for medical students it often leads to interesting conclusions revealing the possibilities of osteopathic treatment.
Osteopathy Party is a New Year party for the staff and students of the Institute, which
allows everybody to fully realize their creative potential. Guests annually surprise each
other with exquisite and unusual costumes according to the theme party, whether it
is Silver Age or Venetian Carnival. This party taking place in Saint-Petersburg manor
houses is a bright final of the year. It allows both students and teachers to take a fresh
look at each other.
The tradition of commencement exercises for graduates of the Institute is no less striking. The ceremony takes place in the ancient halls of NWSMU named after I. I. Mechnikov and SPbSU, and each student is provided with graduation hat and gown. This tradition turns an award of diploma into academic party and stresses the importance of
this event in the professional life of graduates.
