Dear Community Members,
J U N E ,
2 0 1 6
It is hard to believe another school year has gone by.
The year brought an abundance of learning, growing
and demonstrations of excellence by our students.
Certainly, we continue to see continuous
improvements not only in our educational offerings,
but also in our facilities and with our efforts to
communicate the exciting activities taking place at
KSD with our community. If you haven’t already done
so, please consider “liking” us on Facebook or joining
us on Twitter. There will continue to be posts and
updates regarding Kewaunee School District happenings throughout the summer. Please visit us
often for construction updates and important announcements related to the upcoming school year.
This summer will also bring some changes to the faces at KSD. It is my
pleasure to announce to the community that Mr. Mark Dax has been
selected to replace the retiring Mr. Mike Holtz as the new Kewaunee High
School Principal. Mr. Dax is a proud 1988 graduate of Kewaunee High
School and has spent the last 23 years working in education. He taught at
the middle school level for 13 years before entering the world of school
administration. For the past 10 years he has worked as the principal or
assistant principal in elementary, middle and high schools in southern
Wisconsin and Illinois. Mr. Dax looks forward to working with the staff,
students and community to create opportunities of academic and
extracurricular excellence for years to come. I am thrilled to welcome
him to our school community – his educational background, commitment
to students and to the community are sure to make him an excellent fit at KSD. Welcome home
Mark!!
I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Ms. Cara Delebreau as she
joins the Kewaunee School District team. She will be replacing Ms. Debra
Jirtle as the Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent, to the Board of
Education and to the Director of Special Education. Ms. Delebreau is a
1997 graduate of Kewaunee High School with a double major in English
and Technical Writing. She brings extensive experience in many facets of
the business world making her an exceptional addition to KSD. Cara will
be the new cheerful voice greeting our callers to the district office while
also taking care of the many other functions of the district office, special
education and school board.
In closing, please know that while it may be summer, here at KSD administrators and staff are
working hard to prepare for the school year that is only 12 short weeks away from beginning
again. We have over forty-five teachers participating in a variety of professional development
opportunities this summer. As administrators, we are working diligently to ensure that high
quality learning opportunities will again happen for our students. It is my hope that the summer
brings time for you all to relax and enjoy all that our beautiful community has to offer!

“Hydraulics” Build The Future Grant
The Agriculture Department at Kewaunee High School received a Build a Future Grant that allowed us to build a Hydraulic Trainer. This grant
allowed the students to design, build, and use a functioning hydraulic system. Because of this grant we were able to use industrial components
in our system to help teach the students about how hydraulics work and how they can use hydraulics in real life applications. Here are a few
highlights of what the build a future grant allowed us to do and the benefits it had for the students that built the system and those that will use it
in the future. All of the things listed below are things that we were not able to do before and things that will benefits students for years to come.
*The students that built this system learned many design, machining, and fabrication skills that otherwise would not have. They learned
many problem solving skills that were critical to them completing the system and getting all of the components to function together.
*This project has many of the major hydraulic components that are common to all hydraulic systems including hydraulic motors, valves,
cylinders, filters, and pumps. This system uses real hydraulic components and not “tinker toy” parts found in other hydraulic trainers.
*Students will be able to go beyond theory in the classroom and will be able to set-up, test, and operate a functioning system. This greatly
improves student understanding and engagement. With the addition of various pressure gauges, we will be able to demonstrate many
of the theory concepts we discuss in the classroom.
*This trainer includes mechanical components and shows how the hydraulic and mechanical components work together to create a
machine that can do work. While the trainer is not designed, nor will it actually be used to do work, it is a system that students can
relate to and see the real life application of hydraulics instead of just a bunch of separate components mounted on a board which make
it hard to see the real life application of some of the components.
*Since this is a functioning system, students will have the opportunity to trouble shoot the system which is a valuable skill to have when
students work with these systems in real life.
*This trainer greatly enhanced the lab portion of class and increased the hands on applications in class.
*Hydraulic systems are found in a wide variety of applications including everything from agriculture, heavy equipment, cars, trucks,
amusement park rides, and everything in between. This is why having a good knowledge of these systems and knowing how to work
with and on these systems to either accomplish a task or troubleshoot a system that is already in place is very important for our
students to give them a competitive edge in many different industries.
This trainer would not have been possible without the Build a Future Grant. We greatly appreciate your generosity and all you do to help
enhance the education of our students. Build a Future Foundation makes a positive difference in the education our students receive on a
daily basis.

Dear Build the Future Foundation,
Thanks to your generous grant, the first graders this year and for many years to come have a beautiful collection of
high interest books. The wide range of levels gives all students the ability to choose books that fit their interests and
reading level.
Thank you for your generous gift to the First Grade Classroom Libraries. Your commitment to helping our students
achieve academic success in our community is appreciated by all of the teachers and students here at Kewaunee
School District.
Because of your generous support, The First Grade Libraries have a fresh new selection of books. The classroom
library is the place where our students have the opportunity to choose their own books, read independently, and
have literary conversations with their peers. As our students move through the grade levels and into adult
community members, we want them to continue their love of reading and be motivated by the rewards of new
knowledge.
Your generous grant was used to purchase almost 300 new books for our classroom libraries. The books we ordered
provide students a variety of genres and span over four reading levels.
We invite you to visit our classrooms to see the amazing things happening at the Kewaunee School District, meet the
students who you have impacted through your generosity and sit
down with a few first graders to enjoy a good book.
Again, thank you for your ongoing
support.
Sincerely,
Blair Wisnicky

Gamblers Game for Dairy Days
On Sunday, April 3rd the Chamber Choir was once again
invited to sing the National Anthem for the Green Bay
Gamblers. They represented Kewaunee proudly as part of
the Dairy Days celebration sponsored by Pagel’s
Ponderosa. The night included relay race events with
teams from local schools, cheese curds, cow chucking
(toys of course), and was topped off by a fantastic win by
the Green Bay Gamblers. Fun was had by all!
KHS Music Department Spreads Joy on Behavior Rewards Day
On an afternoon where students had the option to
attend recreational activities as a reward for their
positive behavior, Kewaunee HS Band and Choir
Students came up with the idea to travel to
Atrium Post Acute Care of Kewaunee to share
musical performances and play Bingo with the
residents!
It was evident by the unending smiles from residents and students that the performance was well
received!

Bay Area Music Association Continues to Build Community between students
On Wednesday, April 20th the members of the
Kewaunee Chamber Choir participated with many other
area schools for an amazing day of music making. Students from Algoma, Kewaunee, Sevastopol, Southern
Door, and Sturgeon Bay were selected to participate in a
day long event. Schools brought between 5 and 20 students, and each school received individual clinic time
with our guest clinician Dr. Sarah Parks from St. Norbert
College. Each school prepared 1 piece to share as well as
2 group numbers which students collaborated on
throughout the day and which were performed as the
finale for a 4pm concert. It was a wonderful day for students to make connections and share their talents for
music making. Over 70 students from the combined
school were in attendance.

interested in mentoring during next school year, call the Elementary School
office or email Katie Krohn at [email protected].
The Kewaunee School District will be holding a
rummage sale at Hillcrest August 5-6. All proceeds to
benefit a new handicapped accessible playground at

Musicians of the Month for Middle School
Congratulations to Faith Petrina
our April’s “Kewaunee Middle
School Musician of the Month.”
Faith, an eighth grade clarinet
player, has been a dedicated
and very important part of the
band for 4 years. Her positive
attitude and willingness to
really work hard helps her
stand out as a wonderful musician and someone others can

speak for her and we can
always depend on her to learn
her parts and then take them to
the next level. Congratulations

she can improve.
Congratulations Vanessa!

The students of Lakeshore Alternative School had an opportunity to learn CPR and how to use an AED. The students
were able to practice on adult, child, and infant CPR dummies. This was made possible by a grant from the Build the Future
Foundation. NWTC provided a great teacher, Beverly Wautier, who showed us how to use CPR and AED in everyday situations.
In the class, students learned how to give compressions and breaths and how to do the Heimlich Maneuver. The students also
learned how to use an AED to shock someone’s heart back on rhythm. Most importantly, we were able to apply the knowledge in
practice situations and to become certified.
The students of Lakeshore Alternative School are thankful for being able to take the class and learn how to use CPR. We
are happy and confident that we will be able to react in necessary situations. We would especially like to thank the Foundation for
the grant and Beverly Wautier for her time and patience.

READY, SET, FOURTH OF JULY FUN!!!
Celebrate the 4th of July as a family with these fun activities! Start the 4th of July with the Firecracker
5k which is a run/walk through Kewaunee’s beautiful Ahnapee trail, then if you have your kayak or canoe
bring those with you to do a treasure hunt up the river. Next, come on out to join in the food, fun and
festivities at the second annual down home “Smokehouse Jamboree!” to be held at the Barnsite
Retreat and Events Center in beautiful Kewaunee from 10am to 4pm. This year, we are so excited to be
adding the Smokehouse Jamboree Pentathlon - with “teams” of family, friends or co-workers
participating in a pie-eating contest; a wiffle ball tournament; sack races; 3-legged
races and the ever fun (and messy) egg toss competition.
The Pentathlon is just part of the day of
events at the Jamboree which will also feature a delicious down home pig roast and all the usual picnic
favorites! There will also be music, artist booths, smoked meat sampling, a life-sized Candyland
game and more. All proceeds from the Jamboree will help promote safe families and non violence for all
in Kewaunee County.
After all that fun, stroll through our historic downtown to see the premiere of Kewaunee’s first annual art
walk, with participation by local artists and some phenomenal kid’s talents. Finish the day with supper
at the majestic Lakehaven Hall with the ambulance fish fry or Muskrat city burger and brat
bash. Listen to some foot tapping music while the anticipation of the spectacular fireworks loom in the
background. It will be a fun filled, adventurous day in Kewaunee for the entire family to enjoy!

Kewaunee Grade School Getting Students College and Career Ready
Three recent events helped Kewaunee students learn about numerous careers in our area.
*On March 15th, the Kewaunee Grade School 8th Graders attended Career Day at NWTC in Sturgeon Bay. Prior to the event students were given
a Career Skills Interest Inventory which determined which three sessions they would attend. Possible career sessions were Arts/Communication,
Finance/Business Administration, Marketing/Sales/Service, Information Technology, Construction, Industrial Technology, Transportation/
Distribution, Human Services, Health Science, Government/Public Administration, Agriculture, Hospitality/Tourism, Law/Public Safety,
Education & Training, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Within each
session there were multiple speakers.
The school is especially proud of the way that the 8th graders represented not only our school, but also our entire community. They were
extremely respectful during the presentations and gracious of the time the presenters gave to participate.
*On April 22nd , 7th and 8th grade students had the opportunity to attend Agriculture Career Days at Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy sponsored by the
Kewaunee County Economic Development Corporation (KCEDC) and NWTC. Students were treated to a tour of the farm and listened to
presenters speak about career opportunities in agriculture today. Some of the careers represented were: local farm operations, milk testing,
agronomy, veterinary services, cheese production, technology, marketing and many more.
*On May 12th, the Elementary School had Career Dress Up day to inspire students to dress up in careers that interested them. It was an exciting
day! We had a range of careers from police officers, video game designers, dancers, lawyers, to a doctor who was already handing out her
business cards!
Thank you to all of the adults in our community who continue to inspire our students to find a career that they are passionate about!
April was Autism Awareness Month at KGS
The Kewaunee Grade School celebrated Autism Awareness Month in April. Throughout the month classrooms participated in
awareness activities and then filled out a puzzle piece to represent the activity. The goal was to get as many puzzle pieces to spell out BE
YOUnique! Each classroom also found a fact about autism and wrote it on a blue lightbulb that originally was posted outside each classroom
door and eventually found its way to a bulletin board outside of the Counseling Office. The month culminated in a school-wide assembly
where all students were asked to wear blue. The students were shown a short video to simulate what daily life is like for someone on the
autism spectrum. The Kewaunee Grade School is proud of all of its students for their willingness to learn about acceptance of all!
