Sunday 3 January, 5.00pm
Epiphany Carols
Welcome to St Martin’s
Join us for our evening celebrations featuring
readings and music for this wonderful season of
light, discovery, miracle, and revelation. With
reflections by the Vicar of St Martin’s, Revd Dr
Sam Wells and music by the Choir of
St Martin-in-the-Fields.
Sunday 24 January, 10.00am
Homelessness Sunday: Where is Love?
Easter this year falls on 27 March. It’s the hinge of the year: for six weeks before it we mark the disciplines
of Lent and the intensity of Holy Week; for seven weeks after it we mark the celebration of the resurrection.
For St Martin’s, highlights of this season include the Lent study evenings, which this year explore Rowan
Williams’ book Silence and Honey Cakes, which relates the wisdom of the early saints who dwelt in and
near the Syrian desert. Our attention focuses on the services to mark Jesus’ Last Supper and crucifixion;
this year Sam Wells is the preacher at our Three-Hour Passion service on Good Friday.
Holy Week and Easter are also a major focus for our music-making. Our choirs will all be in action and there
are some riveting concerts in store. A cherished part of our annual musical calendar is the St Martin’s
Chamber Music Competition which takes place in March. This offers all the enjoyment of magnificent
performance with the thrill of a prize that could change the lives of the winners. Details on how to apply can
be found on our website and information on the performances on page 19. The weekly Great Sacred
Music series on Thursdays will also reflect the themes of the season.
Meanwhile our Issues of our Time Sunday evening series continues to look at topical and challenging
questions – including management, assisted dying, imprisonment and climate change.

Silence and Honey Cakes:
The Wisdom of the Desert
Each Wednesday in Lent from 17 February until 23
March we invite you to join us for our Bread for
the World, an informal Eucharist at 6.30pm. We
will be taking the wisdom of the 4th-5th century
desert fathers and mothers as the theme for
reflection. This will be followed by a simple Lenten
supper before we divide into groups to share
thoughts and our own response to this desert
wisdom. We will be using former Archbishop of
Canterbury Rowan Williams’ book: Silence and
Honeycakes: The Wisdom of the Desert as our
guide. In it he explores the extraordinary wisdom
that comes from this desert spirituality much of
which resonates so strongly with aspects of our
own modern spiritual search:
• How can we discover the truth about ourselves?
• How can we live in relationship with others?
• What does the desert say about recognising our
priorities?
• How do we learn to pray?
• How can we create a fearless community?
The desert fathers and mothers offer a message of
both profound simplicity and depth. Join us as
together we journey into the desert to rediscover
some of the most vital truths about our lives and
faith. All are welcome.

The Choir of St-Martin-in-theFields is joined by the choirs of All

choral music. Alongside works by Byrd,
Parry, Howells and Pärt, the singers
will join forces to sing two motets for
40 voices; a new composition by David
Bednall and Tallis’s epic Spem in alium.
Written in around 1570 for eight choirs
of five voice parts, some of the earliest
manuscripts for Spem in alium date
from the investiture of Henry
Frederick, son of James I, as the Prince
of Wales in 1610. An astonishing feat of
musical writing, it is still considered by
many to be the greatest piece of
English early music.

Mini Maestro
Saturday 23 January
Saturday 13 February
Saturday 19 March
Saturday 16 April
4.30pm-5.30pm
The Mini Maestro concert series was
started in 2008 by John Landor,
Director of London Musical Arts,
building on his 10-year history of family
concerts at St Martin-in-the-Fields.
These concerts are a fantastic way to
introduce children to classical music,
teaching them through creativity,
storytelling and fun games to
understand and enjoy this magnificent
art-form.
The Spring season sees something that
will entertain everyone! On Saturday
23 January, come and explore the
musical seasons in ‘Autumn’ and
‘Winter’ from Vivaldi’s masterpiece the
Four Seasons. On Saturday 13
February, discover the delights of
opera with the Concordia Foundation
Artists as they perform lively
characters including sensitive
sopranos, magnificent mezzos,
temperamental tenors and boisterous
baritones. Come and hear some
favourite Baroque masterpieces on
Saturday 19 March, or Mozart’s
marvellous Symphony No 40 on
Saturday 16 April.
And don’t forget – before and after the
Mini Maestro concerts, we are open for
Brass Rubbing downstairs in the Crypt.
Using traditional wax crayons and
paper and a selection of over 100
replica brasses, children of all ages can
create their own work of art. Parents
can join in too or just sit back and
enjoy a tea, coffee or cheeky slice of
cake from the award-winning Café in
the Crypt.
