York Suburban School District
Students show a mix of emotions as they enter the gymnasium for
commencement ceremonies.
June/July 2005
Hats in the air and smiles on faces as the seniors
become graduates of York Suburban High School.
Graduates Reign Despite the Rain
With late afternoon
thunderstorms moving
through the area, the York
Suburban High School
commencement program
was moved indoors on
Thursday, June 9.
The rain, heat and
humidity could not wilt
the enthusiasm of the 210
graduates in the Class of
2005.
While the graduates
and ticket-holders were
seated in the gymnasium,
other family members
and guests viewed the
ceremonies on a large
screen in the auditorium.
The graduation ceremony speakers were:
• Mary Kathryn Robins,
President of the National Honor Society.
• Karin Ashley Swartz,
Treasurer, York Suburban Student Council.
Suburban Opts
Out of Act 72
By a unanimous vote, the York Suburban Board
of School Directors has voted not to participate in
Act 72.
The decision by the nine-member board followed the majority report of a Citizens Advisory
Committee that held public meetings attended
by more than 135 residents on the controversial
plan.
Participation in Act 72 would have made
York Suburban home and farm owners eligible

2005.

Vice President, Class

John W. DeHaas,
President of the York
Suburban School Board,
brought greetings from
the school board.
Dr. Michele Merkle,
York Suburban High
School Principal, said
the Class of 2005 had
dedicated itself to service
to the school and the
community. Early in the
school year, she said, the
class decided it wanted
to perform 2,005 hours
of community service.
She also noted the
class includes a set of
twins, Christina and
Yianna Antonopoulos,
and triplets, Benjamin,
Christopher and Lara
Miller.
Following the ceremony in the gymnasium, a reception for the
graduates, their families
and guest was held in
a large tent next to the
Valley View Center.

$34,111,128 Budget
The York Suburban School Board has adopted a 2005-06 school year budget of
$34,111,128.
The budget includes a 1.07 mill tax increase for the next fiscal year. With the 6
percent increase, the new tax rate is 18.57 mills. That means owners of a home assessed at $116,000 will pay an additional $124 a year – just over $10 a month – to
support the educational program in the district.
The final budget reflects two decreases made by the board from the original spending proposal of $35.5 million.
Earlier in the year school board voted to eliminate the per capita tax on district

residents beginning July 1, 2005. This annual tax of $10
per adult resident of the district generates approximately
$107,000 in revenue each year.
A one-tenth of a mill increase was included in the
budget to replace this lost revenue.
The budget addresses a number of financial issues
facing the York Suburban School District in the next
year:
• Flat or minimally increasing real estate values.
• Increasing enrollment.
• Minimal increases in state and federal dollars.
• Significant increases in special education expenses.
• Increased debt service for the construction project at
the York County School of Technology.
A number of public sessions were held on the budget
prior to its final adoption.

in May. Many of the younger brothers and sisters the Prom-goers had an
opportunity to play games and visit the various stops on the “Road Trip,” as
shown in these preview photos.
POST PROM PARTY
A REAL ‘ROAD TRIP’
The nearly 450 young people who attended the 2005 York Suburban Post Prom
Party on May 21 were invited to “hit the road.”
With a Road Trip theme, the students were greeted by highway of carpet.
They could travel to – among other places -- the New York City skyline, Las
Vegas, Alaska, the New England shore or Texas.
The alcohol and substance-free, adult supervised party has become a tradition
at York Suburban following the High School Prom. Students agree to spend the
entire night taking part in the activities at the high school that followed the prom
at the Valencia Ballroom.
The evening featured food, games, entertainment, movies, music and video
machines and giant inflatables in the gymnasium.
Prizes were awarded throughout the evening.
A preview of the evening for donors was held prior to the students arriving
after the prom.
HOW IT IS FUNDED
All funding for the evening comes from fundraisers throughout the year and
private donations. This year more than 280 businesses, organizations and individuals made contributions to the Post Prom Party. (A listing of donors is on page
8 of this issue of “YS Pride.”)
Donations are welcomed throughout the year. Checks, made payable to “YS
Post Prom,” should be mailed to the Post Prom Committee, York Suburban High
School, 1800 Hollywood Drive, York, PA 17403.
HOW YOU CAN HELP NEXT YEAR
District residents and parents who are interested in working on the 2006 Post
Prom Party committees are invited to contact this yearʼs co-chair, Shelly Williams,
at 852-8480.

York Suburbanʼs Kelly Gross is named the 2005 York County Junior Miss.
YS Student Named York County
Junior Miss Third Year in Row
For the third year in a row, a student from York Suburban High School
has won the title of York County Junior Miss.
The 2005 York County Junior Miss is Kelly Gross. Last yearʼs title-holder
was Mary Kathryn (Katie) Robins, who graduated with this yearʼs Class of
2005. The 2003 Junior Miss was Anne Pavlick.
In fact, it was from previous participants that Kelly learned about the
Junior Miss Program. “I heard a lot of positive things from girls who had
been in the program,” she said.
Kelly, the daughter of Karl and Jolene Gross, has been in the York Suburban school system since fourth grade. She has an older sister, Kristen, who
will be entering her senior year at West Chester University, and a younger
brother, Eric, at the York Suburban Middle School.
For her talent presentation at the Junior Miss Program, Kelly accompanied
herself on the piano while singing “On My Own,” from the Broadway show
“Les Miserables.”
Kelly was awarded $10,400 in scholarships as winner of the Junior Miss
Program. While she still has a year to decide where she would like to attend
college, she said she plans to study architecture.

Crowd listens to YS Jazz Band at inaugural concert of Cherry Lane Concerts
in Downtown York on Tuesday, May 10.
YS Musicians Play in
Cherry Lane
York Suburban Middle School and High School musicians inaugurated York
Cityʼs annual Noon Concerts in Cherry Lane program in May.
A large crowd of downtown business people, Central Market shoppers and family
members of the musicians gave the musical groups a rousing reception.
New Uniforms
for Band
After 13 years of use, the York Suburban Marching Knights will be wearing new uniforms when the
2005-06 school years begins.
Ninety-eight band uniforms and two drum major outfits have been ordered.
The new band uniforms feature a flap-over
jacket with a sequin vest
effect. The YS logo is
prominently displayed
on the jacket. The hats
have an orange and black
plume.
Music Director Richard Anderson says the fate
of the old uniforms has not
been decided.
“Since the old uniforms are 13 years old, it
has not been determined
what we are going to do
with them due to dry-rot,
discoloration, and just
basic wear and tear,” he
said.

Valley View Principal
Wins Children’s
Champion Award
For her work in preparing children in childcare
programs to be ready to enter kindergarten, Dr. Tawn
Ketterman has been presented with a Childrenʼs
Champion Award.
The principal of the Valley View Center was
honored for her advocacy on behalf of young children by the Focus on Our Future initiative in York
County. Valley View houses the York Suburban
School Districtʼs kindergarten, transition and first
grade classes.
Dr. Ketterman, who has been principal of Valley
View for six years, says she has been working “with
11 to 12 childcare (pre-school) centers where our
students are coming from.” The directors and staff
of the childcare centers are invited to come to Valley
View and meet the staff, as well as to observe students
in the classroom.
In some cases, kindergarten teachers have gone to
the day care centers to meet with the teachers there.
“Next year I hope we can make it more flexible
for them to come in,” Dr. Ketterman said.
“The lines of communications have been great,”
Dr. Ketterman noted.
Dr. Tawn Ketterman, principal of the Valley View Center, is surrounded by
students from a kindergarten class.
